LF advice on laptop for watching stuff while in bed

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:55 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

it's that time again: my current laptop broke and I need a new one.

The laptop will 100% exclusively be used in bed to watch netflix and whatnot, no gaming, no office work etc. Because of this I was thinking that maybe a tablet might be better but I feel like they would just tip over constantly while on a not so stable surface (=bed)?

I had an HP laptop for about 500 bucks iirc but it was an absolute piece of shit to be honest and completely turned me off of HP. The quality was atrocious (plastic) and the display sucked as well. That one was my bad, I guess I didn't properly research what I was buying. That's why I'm here now.

Many many years earlier (think like 2011ish) I had a Sony Vaio and that thing was amazing. Way sturdier and the display was great. Alas, no more Sony laptops.

Anyway, what I am looking for:

    • solid quality, ideally not plastic. especially important: quality of the display attachment to the base of the laptop (no idea how to describe it better, not a native speaker). My last laptop broke because the hinge joint (is that the word?) loosened from the base. Again, fuck HP.

    • a good IPS display. My "perfect world" display would be a macbook one.

    • solid quality keyboard, but that's rather optional. not much typing will be done on this one.

    • budget: well this is a tough one. "as cheap as reasonably possible" but below 800$ I'd say. It really depends on the arguments.

Like honestly, I hate apple with a passion (mostly hate the iphone though) but I've always been a fan of macbooks because of the display, battery life and overall quality. The prices are insane though and I don't need that much processing power at all.

Well that's it. Thanks to everyone in advance for their help!

    Info about ASUS laptops

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:28 AM PDT

Is there a way to get more detailed specs about ASUS laptop models (like Lenovo has psref.lenovo.com) or is ASUS' series specification the best you can get?

For example, how can I know which specific display is in a model: Asus M513UA-WB511 Local Serbian vendor listed it only as IPS.

ASUS website only shows specs for Ryzen 4000 series in M513 lineup: https://www.asus.com/Laptops/For-Home/VivoBook/VivoBook-15-M513/techspec/

[USA] Durable and reliable daily use laptop for Python programming and casual gaming <$800

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 10:45 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      • $800 (can push to $850 if needed) EDIT: Willing to bump up to $1000 to consider additional options.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      • No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      • Build Quality and Performance are top priorities. Form factor and battery life does not matter.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Not at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • At least 13"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • Older Steam games and maybe some occasional Minecraft and Rocket League.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • Low to mid settings are fine as long as FPS is solid and stable. Just older Steam games and perhaps the occasional Rocket League/Minecraft (again, low to mid settings are fine as long as the performance is stable).
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Reliable build quality for the laptop model is a must, and a good IPS screen + backlit keyboard are very nice to have. I do not care about optical drive, touchpad, or fingerprint reader. I am looking for a laptop that will last me a long time.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • Security is also important - I do not want to consider Lenovo laptops for this reason. I would strongly prefer a reliable, good build quality USA-based manufacturer (likely Dell or HP, but definitely open to other options such as Asus, etc.). Open to other brands if the build quality of the model is very good (though no Macs). Also, good cooling/thermals is strongly preferred.

EDIT: Some tweaks to formatting, increased budget, removed CPU preference

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:08 AM PDT

    Hello everybody,

i am currently checking out laptops for general use and some light gaming.

Portability shouldnt be too bad (nothing around 3kg) and im looking for something with a screen around 15". Not sure if id want/need a 2 in 1 as ive never had or used one.

Also im not sure if going with intel or amd processors. (whats better for this price range?)

id probably want 16gm ram or at least upgradable.

My budget is around 800 - 1100€ and ill be buying it in germany/austria.

Currently i saw 2 nice deals that you can see below:

Lenovo yoga slim 7: price 850€

    Thanks alot in advance!

      id prefere new.

    Memory: 4 GB RAM

    Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT

I'm not picky on Nvidia vs AMD or Intel vs AMD or whatever. Just want the cheapest possible price to run smite. Please, and thank you!

    Asus G14 Gen 1 - or - Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:23 AM PDT

Diagram to show the models and pros and cons: g14 vs x1 extreme - Imgur

Hi, I'm desperately looking for opinions between these two,

I only play older games so maybe the extra power of the G14 is wasted on me but some future proofing would be nice,

Also I would like to run linux, either by itself or as a dual boot setup.

I don't need high mobility and am very fussy in terms of build and design.

Frontend web development, Docker, Dual 4k external monitors

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:08 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'd estimate up to around £1,500 in the UK (my new employer will be purchasing and I've been told I can choose my own setup)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
It's essential that I can use two external 4k monitors (at 60hz) and it should not struggle with typical programming tasks (my current Dell XPS 9560 with WSL2 chugs along when spinning up local dev environments). Good battery life would be useful and I'd like it to have a premium feel.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not particularly important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I'd say between 13 - 15.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'll likely be using Figma (or something similar) regularly.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard & touchpad is high on the priority list and I've found a fingerprint reader to be useful (facial recognition might be even better). Not interested in touch screen, again the XPS I have has one and I hardly use it. Definitely want reliable build quality.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'd originally thought one of the new M1 macs would be my next laptop, though I've read that they don't support dual external monitors which is a shame. I will likely be working with Docker too and I'm not how well it's supported on ARM. I'll be working on Node.js applications with React.js / Next.js.

[GER] laptop for gaming, programing and photo editing | 2500€/3000$

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:54 AM PDT

    Hey,

since my current laptop is almost six years old, I want to upgrade to a new one. Right now, I only have experience with XMG models.

Preferable, I want a laptop that is good for gaming and can last a few years, but does not look like a gaming laptop, since I will take it with me often. Also build quality is important for me this time.

I've been looking into some laptops the last few days and came up with two, that fit my expectation.

The Razer Blade 15 Advance with a i7-10875H , 15.6" QHD, 240 Hz display and RTX 3070 Laptop GPU.

The Asus Rog Zephyrus G15 wiht a Ryzen 9 5900HS, QHD display and RTX 3070.

These two laptops fit my needs. I wanted to ask you guys, if you think they are good for their price and if not, if you have any other suggestions for me. Thank you! :)

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - up to 2500€
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      - no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - form, build quality and performance is all important. Battery not so much.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - thinness is important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - 15,6-inch QHD. The refresh rate is not important for me, the nits and contrast value are more important.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - mostly gaming, programming and light photo editing
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - all kinds of games, current and old ones (my current laptop can't run Cyberpunk anymore, so that's the main reason im upgrading)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - good build quality

Mech Engineering student looking for performance and portability

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 11:20 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Up to $2250, New Zealand
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, but looking to make lasting investment
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

All are essentially equal: I'll be biking to uni every day so it needs to be portable and have good battery, but to last it needs to be good quality and I think it'll need reasonable performance too

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Not smaller than 13" but not larger than 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will be used for mechanical engineering, so Solidworks and matlab are a strong requirement
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Casual stuff like minecraft but possibly also things along the lines of RDR2 or Squad down the road. Would like at least 60fps and medium graphics
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard is highly desirable. No touch screen.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Ive basically narrowed it down to models in the vein of the Macbook air ($1500) and Asus Zephyrus G14 ($2250). I feel like the Zephyrus may be the way to go for compatibility and graphic performance but I'd like some confirmation that the added cost is worth it over the MacBook. Thanks for reading!

Seeking medium sized laptop with good battery life for cheap. No thrills needed.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 11:10 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      USA 300, less is better.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Prefer used to new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life, build quality, performance, standard laptop(no 2 in 1s)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Would like something in the lighter category, but I'm not too picky here.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13.3-15.6, somewhere in there. Leaning more towards 14".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly for browsing. Spreadsheets. Maybe minor gaming(terraria/diablo1)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-no preference on FPS, listed above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Disc drive important for older games. I use wireless mouse, but a good keyboard would be nice.

This will be a device I bring to work, so I would prefer something relatively professional looking(no 2005s please). Was looking at this for $190- but I did want a disc drive. Would you skip the disk drive for something like this? -> HP ProBook 655 G1 15.6" Laptop AMD CPU 2.5GHz 4GB 250GB Windows 10

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:43 PM PDT

Ordered a laptop, been waiting for a month for it to arrive and it just got pushed another month and I think its time to shop for some other possible options. So anyway I'm looking for a laptop somewhere in the $1400/$1800 range with specs close to this (https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/dell-g7-15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-7500-laptop) just hopefully not from dell. Any suggestions appreciated!

Canada, 800-1200CAD, In the market for An X1 with better graphics

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:41 PM PDT

    Toronto Canada - 800-1200CAD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, preferred. I usually buy Thinkpad X1's 1 year refurbished/used

I want to be able to run 50 tabs of chrome, starcraft brood war and 1080p livestreams at the same time

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    keyboard-10/10

    build quality/finance industry look-7/10

    can't look too gamer

1080p screen is completely fine, no need for 4k, I watch movies in VR goggles

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    3-4lb is ideal

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 or 15inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No CAD, no video/photo editing.

Gaming would be light games like LOL,Broodwar,starcraft2

Heavier games like Oculus VR Skyrim, Half Life Alyx, flight sims would be a bonus but not any sort of priority

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to be able to run 50 tabs of chrome, starcraft brood war 60fps, 5 tradingview charts and 1080p livestreams at the same time

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A professional workstation machine that's also used to run and consult for equity portfolios

Currently my last 3 laptops have been X1 Carbons 14 inch. current x1 is 5.5 years old now so it's done its duty, and I'd like a more powerful graphics card

I've looked at M1 macbooks (wow! good chip! but not for me), dell spx, other ultrabooks, their keyboards seem to fall short

I've look at Thinkpad X1 carbon5 6 7 8 9gens /yoga/extreme for the past years, the X1 Carbon 9th seems out of my price range (intel iris xe graphics, looks good tho) and the older gens HD620 graphics wont be enough

P series is more focused for CAD, macbooks are more for video editing and design work (starcraft doesnt even run on the M1 chip) and E series L series are more for schools/organizations

Thus I'm probably looking for a X1 Extreme 1 or 2nd gen, refurbished a year out.

Would you say that is a good idea?

    -

I found a local listing $1500cad cash firm:
top configuration of the 1st gen X1 Extreme:

    4K touch display, 400 nits

Intel Coffee Lake-H Core i7-8850H CPU

    Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q 4 GB

    32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz (2x DIMMs)

    1 TB SSD ( Samsung PM981 MZVLB1T0HALR – 2x M.2 NVMe 80 mm slots with RAID 0/1)

Wireless AC (Intel AC 9560), Bluetooth 5.0, Gigabit LAN (with adapter)

    Battery 80 Wh, 135 W brick

    Windows 10 Pro

Would you say this would be a good fit for me, and would it be a good deal

    Thanks

    Canada / $2000-$2500 - Ultrabook that's not Dell XPS

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:13 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $2000-$2500 in Canada

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Very high - ultrabook/premium feel is a must, no touchscreen or 2-in-1, great build quality and solid performance. Will mostly be used around the house so battery life isn't crucial.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very - I'd like a laptop with a premium feel

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some light gaming and photo editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Some MMOs (Star Wars: The Old Republic) on low graphics, Super Giant games, Tabletop Sim

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
SSD, small bezels, Windows OS, "future-proof" as much as possible

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have a new Dell XPS 13 currently but am extremely disappointed with the webcam and some screen issues. If I'm paying ~$2000 for a premium laptop, I want it to work flawlessly.

      Thanks in advance! :)

Looking for a laptop for kids that can handle Minecraft - $300, US

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:26 PM PDT

I understand this request is kind of ridiculous regarding the budget however I am looking to purchase two laptops, one for each of my kids, that can handle their school but also some gaming, namely Minecraft. Currently they have Asus Chromebooks that cant really handle much of anything. I feel very out of my wheelhouse when it comes to this, I am not computer illiterate but I'm realizing I have no idea the differences between the processors and whatnot.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    $300 per laptop

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      1-Performance

    2-Build Quality

3-Battery life (they usually aren't using them not plugged in)

    4-form factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Minecraft as mentioned, I'm sure there will be more games eventually, in addition to standard office suite
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      ???? no clue
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good input devices would be good, and ability to use peripherals like an additional monitor, external mouse, probably external storage eventually
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I think thats it, thank you!

General purpose laptop for heavy traveler

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:46 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2,000 USD / 'Murica

    · Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes to both

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Battery life (road/plane warrior)

    2. Form factor (want a thin ultrabook footprint)

    3. Performance

    4. Build quality (not to be confused with reliability/longevity)

    · How important is weight and thinness to you? On a scale of 1-10, ten being the highest

    8.5

Very important - travel a lot so need something thin; lightness isn't as important

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 or greater (used to have a 17" and loved it but seems that's rare now; will have it docked in a docking station with monitors most of the time but will need a good screen size when traveling)

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Large excel files and databases, Photoshop, 500,000 simultaneous Chrome tabs

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not gaming.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Need to have:

    1. Backlit keyboard is a must

    2. Want to future-proof as much as possible so it doesn't slow down and become a paperweight in two years or lack important features that become standard

    3. Needs to play well with docking stations

    4. Great keyboard that doesn't feel like mashed potatoes

    5. No 4K screens since that fucks with battery life

    6. Matte screen

    7. Reputation for longevity/reliability (need it to just work and not stop working)

    8. Dedicated arrow keys, FN keys, and spacious keyboard layout that mimics a real desktop one. I swap back and forth between docked and traveling so minimal transition between the two layouts is important

    9. Needs to not die overnight when I lock and close the lid on the stupid fucker

    Nice to have:

    1. Number pad would be amazing

    2. HDMI port (nice to connect to hotel TVs for Netflix without that dongle life)

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Leaning toward an X1 Carbon but the 14" screen is just a little less than ideal. Seems to check all the other boxes though.
