What's the safe way to use windows for a non-technical person?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:44 PM PST

So this non-technical person often clicks on ads and loads up their Windows with tons of malwares & other stuff. Often times apps like Preview, File explorer would malfunction. What are the options to give them like a safe mode login or some sorta sandbox'ed environment?

Can something happen to my machine if I use a unpaid product key? (Windows 8)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 04:24 PM PST

And yes, I looked up a product key online because there is no way I'm paying for Windows 8, especially since it's being discontinued in 2023, and it actually worked and I'm very suprised. I do want to know if something will happen to my machine if I do that tho

UPDATE: It allowed me to install Windows successfully, however pointless customization is turned off. This doesn't matter as this is my Grandma's computer.

Is there a way I can have two separate videos set as my screen savers on dual monitors?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:53 PM PST

Hi, title really says it all. I have the latest version of Windows, and I have two long timelapse videos I would like to set as my screensavers as I have dual monitors. Is there any software that will allow me to save one timelapse as the screensaver for one monitor, and the other time lapse on the other?

Anyone know where speech platform 11 went?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:40 PM PST

None of the links I can find seem to be valid anymore. I can find version 10 of the engine and languages. And the engine page says this isn't the latest, go here for version 11, and that link is bad as well.

How to save a specific Windows 10 workspace layout

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 01:03 PM PST

How to save a specific Windows 10 workspace layout

Is there a way to save my Windows 10 workspace layout? Here is one example to illustrate what I mean.

When I am translating a document, I usually have Word taking up half the space of my desktop monitor while my web browser takes up the other half. On the web browser, I have several specific tabs which I usually consult when translating, such as: one tab to research on Google, another for a translator forum, and about two or three more tabs, in that specific order.

Furthermore, I use Groupy (see video review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17_ErhXYXmY). In it, I add the above-mentioned web browser with all those tabs, plus on Groupy I add a few PDF files for consultation, a dictionary software, and Excel (my vocabulary bank).

Thus, I literally feel lazy just thinking about how after I power on my computer, I still have to manually open the aforementioned software and specific tabs, and have to arrange them in that specific layout/order every time I translate a document.

I am wondering if there is a software or something that can save my workspace so that all I need to do after powering my computer is to open my previously saved workspace and bam!, have it automatically load in the exact way I set it up.

Apparently immovable file at end of windows partition

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 12:43 PM PST

The maximum amount I can shrink my windows partition is a small fraction of the total free space. I deleted the restore points, pagefile, shadow copies, kernel memory dumps, turned hibernation off, did disk cleanup, and defrag, but none of this helped.

Can I resize from a linux partition then use a windows recovery usb?

Edge is the only web browser that windows is allowing me to use.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:08 AM PST

I've tried to fix this for like 2 hours but to no avail. Basically whenever I open ANY other web browser besides edge, it instantly closes. I've tried Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Opera GX, and none of them work. I would be fine with it, but I really don't like Edge.

    Fixed 2013 Lenovo T431s

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:37 AM PST

Random story, but I just wanted to share with you all as a thank you for all of the help I got from reading posts in this sub-reddit. I have had the same laptop for college and now med school. A couple of weeks ago it seemed to finally kick the bucket. I updated windows 8.1, shut down the computer, then brought it over to my significant others house.

When I turned it on, it would allow me to log into the computer, but my desktop was black and all I could do was move the mouse around, no other controls worked. Lenovo wanted $50 for tech support so I thought I would go at it alone to try and salvage as much as I could. After a lot of web site/forum/sub-reddit reading I was able to learn how to boot the computer into safe-mode, transferred my files to an online backup (already had most backed-up), and factory reset the device.

After rebooting from the reset, windows worked again! I had full access to all features even when not in safe mode. To top it all off, my webcam, which for unknown reasons had stopped working all the way back in 2014 is now functioning again!

I know lots of you on here have solved more complex issues, but I just wanted to share my small lesson in backing up your files, learning how to fix tech on your own, and continuing to use technology for as long as you can. Hopefully, it will now last me a few more months at least until I start my new job in July and can finally update!

Is there such thing as a digital pen you don't have to touch the screen for?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:23 AM PST

As if it worked similarly to a wireless mouse, you could use it on a mousepad or something similar like that, so you didn't have to touch the screen for writing, like writing on your desk or not having to be touching your computer for you to use it. Does this exist?

Adding OneDrive Link to File Explorer

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:20 AM PST

I recently got set up with a OneDrive account for my family, but my File Explorer (Windows 10, build 19041.804) does not show the link to OneDrive. My laptop had the link and has access to it, but on my desktop I usually don't have the link or, if I do have it, it disappears after I click on it. I have tried re-installing the OneDrive app to see if that would clear it up, but it does not. Does anyone have a way to get it back on my File Explorer bar?

[Question] How can i tell if my backup is completed?

How do I get windows 10 on a flash drive so I can install it on my new pc I just built? Also would this be an issue if I wanted to get student edition later on?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:30 AM PST

I just finished my build (but haven't even turned it on yet cause I'm afraid it's not gonna work) and I was wondering how to download windows 10 to a flash drive? But I don't want to pay $100 for a key so I was going to use it w/o one for a while but a friend of mine said he would be willing to give me his school login info so I could get his free windows 10 student edition but my concern is that I will run into issues when I go to switch over to student edition. Will switching cause any issues?

TLDR: how do I install windows 10 to a flash drive & will I run into issues when switching from unactivated win 10 to activated student edition?
