This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Computer keeps randomly rebooting/restarting (ASUS TUF Gaming X570-PLUS (WIFI))

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:24 AM PST

Experiencing random reboot / freezes when playing games like CSGO, Overwatch etc. on sorta-high settings like normal settings. Used to be BSOD with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR with old RAM, that was not compatible with my Motherboard, but still occurs when playing CSGO for a long duration (recently occurred).

BIOS Version: 3405 Note that I had to BIOS flash my motherboard for it to be compatible with my CPU and wasn't when it came out of the box

    Current specs:
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming X570-PLUS (WIFI)
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor 3.80 GHz
    GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1660ti
    RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB F4-3600C18D-16GTZRX 16GB 3600MHz DDR4
PSU: Corsair RM750X Fully Modular CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition CPU Air Cooler (Normal) Case: NZXT H510 Mid Tower Case White/Black

    Old RAM (Incompatible with Motherboard): Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3600MHz

    Troubleshooting:

    • Installed Windows 10 Pro twice, both fresh installs - BSOD during setup and after / Random reboot occurred
    • Updated and installed all my available drivers twice (and reinstalled the GPU driver thrice) - BSOD/Reboot still occurred
    • Checked for virus and malware - Reboot / BSOD still occurred
    • Used default settings for BIOS - Reboot / BSOD still occurred
    • Changed to 3200Mhz to see if it was an overclocking issue - Reboot / BSOD still occurred
    • Ran a MemTest86 test with my system and the Old RAM (incompatible) and came short of no errors and a 100% Pass - Errors persisted of Reboots before and after

    More information about the reboots:
Sometimes during a "Reboot" the screen will just flash black and then the computer restarts into Windows, even though the CPU and GPU temperatures are well within good range and not overheating.

The new RAM I bought a couple of days ago was on the QVL List for memory from Asus directly so it isn't another compatibility issue (the difference is obvious where the old RAM would crash during windows start up and a first run of CSGO).

I have read in some threads about the same rebooting issue and that downgrading to Bios Version 2812 has fixed this error and was wondering how to downgrade Bios Versions on Asus, cause it isn't quite easy.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Edit: Added current BIOS Version and some more information regarding the flashing of it

Another Edit: Added information regarding a MemTest86 run I did prior before this post

Another Edit Again: Added CPU Cooler specifications

Yep It's that time again, Edit: Added Case specifications

Do you think I (13 years old) can build a pc?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:46 AM PST

I am currently using an HP Envy PC which has like 4 cores, integrated graphics, and 8 gb of ram. I've started making money editing videos on Fiverr, and I am now in the market for a new system. I use Davinci Resolve 17 for my editing. I have about 1500 or so to spend including the monitor. My question is, do you think I can build my own PC? I'd prefer to build my own because I can fix it later on if I need to. It would also be easier to upgrade. I've fixed my drone before and I have decent technical knowledge. I also know what parts I need and all that. (besides the gpu because of current prices.) I think I could do it but I'd like to get a second opinion before spending a ton of money. Thanks

Is it even possible to build a PC anymore?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:30 AM PST

Been trying to get a GPU for about 2 months now. Struck out on the 3060 drop today. Is it even possible for a human to get a GPU at a decent price anymore?

    I’m done.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 12:09 PM PST

Let me preface this by acknowledging my incredible amount of privilege to have GPU stock problems be a big issue in my life, this post is pure whine.

After today's pitifully abyssal restock and 3060 drop, I'm giving up on getting a 3000 series NVIDIA card. Scalpers and miners have run this entire process, one that should be exciting and rewarding, into the ground becoming a fucked up cycle of wasted efforts, disappointment, and complete annoyance at the lack of fucks NVIDIA gives towards its run-of-the-mill consumers. Not only that, but I can't even grab a 5 YEAR OLD CARD that isn't hundreds of dollars overpriced in the second-hand market (thanks, miners).

Unfortunately, there is almost no way to hold NVIDIA accountable for its complete botching of a GPU series launch. I'll be waiting eight months for next-gen, but who the hell knows how THAT will go.

Again, this is the epitome of "first-world problems," but I have a fully-built machine I worked hard to build without the core component that'll allow me to truly use it. Just wanted to vent a bit, I know a whole lot of others are in a similar boat as I am.

Has anyone else ever had Google Chrome or any other browser just randomly install on their pc when they booted it up before? Because that happened to me today.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:48 PM PST

I turned on my pc and chrome opened. The only issue was that I never installed it. I use Firefox. When I went to uninstall it, it said that it had been installed today. I don't know how that's possible since I haven't touched to pc in two days, and it didn't update or anything when I turned it on. Why did that happen? Any help is appreciated. I uninstalled it, but from what I understand, it still leaves files behind. Is there any way to locate and remove them? Thanks.

Appreciation Post for my RX 480

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:42 AM PST

Just amazing how much I'm able to squeeze out of it. I recently finished playing AC Valhalla on High/Medium settings at 1512p/30FPS (at least when it wasn't stuttering due to poor optimisation on Ubisoft's part). It blows my mind that people usually upgrade every 2 years, while this card is more than 4 YEARS OLD and is still holding up.

I think I can definitely wait for that RX 6000/ RTX 3000 card.

Can anyone help me to get what's the max RAM speed for my Motherboard?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:26 PM PST

Hi!, googling my motherboard model I found these pages:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/product/fztCmG/asus-motherboard-h87mpluscsm

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1052180-REG/asus_h87m_plus_micro_atx_motherboard.html/overview

And found out that my motherboard support DDR3 RAM and the Max its 32GB but I cant find anywhere how to check whats the max RAM speed that it supports.

I found that in one of those pages it says something like this:

    *Memory Speed

    • DDR3-1066
    • DDR3-1333
    • DDR3-1600

    What does that means?

    Thanks all in advance!

    Edit: SOLVED!, thank you all!

1 x 16GB RAM vs 2 x 16 GB RAM - how much will it improve gaming experience?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:18 AM PST

    Hi all,

First time building a PC, so would like to hear the thoughts of reddit's wisest souls on this. I opted for a 1 x 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM for my build as I bought from CEX (second-hand electronics chain in the UK) instead of a 2 x 8GB as I was worried about the compatibility between the two sticks. This lets me run AC Odyssey at ~ 65 fps on Medium settings.

I am therefore thinking about making a quick upgrade to my PC - cheapest I can think of is adding an extra 16GB of RAM so I can benefit from increased total RAM AND with it being dual channel. Would this have any substantial effect on the gaming performance of my build?

    I'm running:

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600

    NVIDIA GTX 1070

    1 X 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz Corsair Vengeance

    NVME M.2 SSD 1TB

    TL;DR: 1 x16GB RAM vs 2 x 16GB RAM, much gaming improvement?

    Thanks in advance!

A friendly reminder to be very careful when removing AMD stock cooler

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:43 AM PST

I've got Ryzen 5 3600 on B450 Tomahawk board. Today I was doing some general maintenance, and I decided to be completely thorough and remove the CPU cooler, too. I read somewhere that the pre-applied thermal paste on the stock cooler can harden a lot over time which makes it hard to remove the cooler. So, I decided to melt it a little and let OCCT run for about 15 minuted with all fans but the cooler itself unplugged. Even so the temperature stabilised at about 87 Celsius, so I stopped the cooler for a minute, too, and let it get nice and toasty. Then I quickly turned the computer off and tried to remove the cooler.

I bloody ended up ripping the CPU right out of the socket. The CPU might as well have been welded to the cooler for how strong it held. Thankfully no pins were bent and the socket survived it, too. But it took me about an hour off very careful application of isopropyl alcohol and brute force to get the thing to unstick.

So, if you ever deicide to remove your stock cooler, too, be very careful for (at least) the first time.

Please check my build before I order the parts

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:30 AM PST

Hi there! So, this is the first PC I'm going to build and I would be grateful for a second pair of eyes. PcPartpicker and my (limited) knowledge say that all parts are compatible, but both aren't necessarily correct. I will add a GPU once prices have calmed down, but I need to build right now for work (hence the integrated GPU). And I will also add a WiFi 6 PCIe card, but I'm still searchung for one.

The PC will be used for office work, photo and video editing, digital art and casual gaming (and games such as Witcher 3 once I add a GPU).

I'm buying the parts in Austria. Pcpartpicker doesn't list my country, so the prices below are inaccurate. I can get all parts for 690€ (including shipping).

What I'm unsure about is the motherboard. I know 600W is way too much right now, but will it still be too much once I add a GPU?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Need some upgrade advice, please!

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:16 PM PST

Hello, so I bought a PC about 8 months ago and It just isn't as good as I'd like it to be so I'm going to give it to my younger brother. I need something thatll be able to stream games no problem on high settings as well as basic editing. Im currently looking at a modest $2k build with the specs being:

    AMD RYZEN 9 3900x 16GB DDR4 memory 500GB M.2 SSD 2TB 7200RPM STORAGE Liquid cpu cooler X570 motherboard geforce GTX 1650

(Considering the price difference of my old PC and this future build im interested in Its obviously an upgrade no matter what, however, I just want to be sure it'll be able to stream, game, and edit well. What're your thoughts LMK) Basically, how well do you think this will run while streaming and is it a solid upgrade?

Where to go from what I have.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 01:23 PM PST

I'm currently considering upgrading a few parts of my current build, but am overwhelmed by the vast amount of choices out there.

    My current build:

    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600x
    • Mobo: ROG STRIX B350-F Gaming
    • RAM: 16.0GB Dual-Channel Ripjaw @ 1064MHz (15-15-15-36)
    • GPU: Radeon RX 470 8gb
    • Storage: XPG SX82000 1TB SSD M.2 and Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB
    • PSU: Seasonic FOCUS GX-750, 750W 80+ Gold, Full-Modular
    • Monitor: DELL SE2419H (1920x1080@59Hz)
    • Optical Drive: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7260S
    • Case: Cooler Master Elite 431 Plus
    • Fans: ARCTIC P12 120mm (x3)

The areas I'm looking to upgrade:

    • GPU:4K capability and good RAM, but not bank breaking, will settle for older and refurbished models
    • Monitor: >=27", 4K output; I care more about picture quality and color accuracy than I do refresh rate
    • Optical Drive: read and rewrite blu-rays
    • Case: Good mixture of front ports (USB C and A), good airflow, better cable management, external drive bay for my Optical Drive

Any recommendations or advice, even in areas I'm not looking to upgrade, is immensely appreciated. Thanks!

2 Video Cards in one PC

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:30 PM PST

I am planning on adding a video card to my gaming PC for a special purpose (not SLI). So, I'm a little hesitant on the right PSU that I should use. Below are the parts:

    1x RTX 3080 @ ~320 watts
    1x RTX 3060 @ ~200 watts
    B550 motherboard
    Ryzen 9 3900X
    3600MHz @ 16GB x2 memory
    2x NVME M.2
    2x SATA SSD 2.5
I already have all those parts, I'm about to order a PSU... question is, is 1000 watts PSU enough? Or should I go bigger? The price difference is a huge leap, so I don't want to buy anything that is overkill.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:28 AM PST

Hello, I have an ASUS ROG GL553V laptop with an intel core i7, 7th gen and wanted to upgrade my RAM. I was looking at some hyperX Impact 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz (2 x 8 GB) but I am relatively new to tinkering with my pc and have some doubts. Are those hyperX RAM good?? And is there any compatibility problems with my processor being older (7th gen)?? Or do you have a suggestion for better RAM options I can buy if my budget is 100 dollar???

    Thank you in advance
