    Simple Questions - January 23, 2021

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

My Gtx 970 finally died today after 6 years... 1 day after ordering a 3070...

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:06 AM PST

I don't know what sort of strange 'luck' this is, but I was very close to not ordering the new card.

    Retro sleeper PC

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:36 AM PST

I had not built myself a new PC in 10 years, and I had planned to build one around the end of 2020. That turned out to be less than ideal, but I made it happen. I modified the case several months ago to look like an early 90's beige PC case.
    Here are the photos.
Here is the video documenting the case modification.

    List of technical specs:

    • Intel i9-10900K CPU
    • MSI Unify z490 motherboard
    • 2x32 GB Corsair Vengance LPX DDR4 3600 (CMK64GX4M2D3600C18) RAM
    • Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler
    • MSI Nvidia 3060Ti Gaming X Trio video card
    • Samsung 980 Pro 1TB m.2 SSD
    • Samsung 970 EVO Plus m.2 2TB SSD
    • Other assorted SATA SSDs
    • Noctua NF-F12 fans
    • Corsair AX860 power supply
    • Modified Be Quiet! Pure Base 600 case

RTX 3080 blows the fuses in the house (with 2 PCI-e connected)

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:58 AM PST

First time builder here and I worked on a completely new setup today: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fjjHbh

First I connected all parts outside of the case to see if everything is working. I reached the BIOS and I could see all the expected components in it. After putting it all into the case and trying to finish my cable management I ran into a problem.

    Problem:

As soon as I plug in the PSU (before turning on the computer) the fuses get blown in the house.

    Debug 1:

    1. Removing the GPU from the PSU
    2. Plug in the PSU -> Fuses are fine

    Debug 2:

    1. Using only 1 PCI-e cable for the GPU
    2. Plug in the PSU -> Fuses are fine

    Debug 3:

    1. Using 2 PCIe cables
    2. Plug in the PSU -> WILL blow the fuse

Does anyone have any idea how to continue from here? I am not sure how I can debug this further. The really weird thing is that everything worked fine when it was out of the case. (I'm would also like to avoid, removing everything from the case again....)

FYI: I'm not too familiar with all the terms so excuse my "beginner" lingo.

    Components:

Case: be quiet! Dark Base 700

    PSU: Corsair RM750

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU

GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 XC3 ULTRA GAMING

Motherboard: MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge WiFi

RAM: Corsair Vengenance - 32 GB - 3600 MHz Dual Channel

Slightly bent SSD, what's the risk of damage?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:58 PM PST

It's an EVO 970. I slightly bent it when installing the screw, but it still straightened out when the pressure was taken off. I'm just worried I did some damage that will cause an issue a year from now.

Are these things super delicate or pretty robust?

Is there a way I can diagnose it to be certain it's okay?

    4k @60hz vs 2k at 120hz+ (Monitor Question)

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:25 AM PST

TL;DR - Building a new high-end gaming PC and I need advice on buying a monitor - should I pick 4k or 120+ frame rates? Details below. EDIT: Totally forgot to say I play mostly single player games. Not exclusively but like, most of the time. I know high FPS is more important for fast paced MP experience in some cases so I figured I should point that out since a lot of you were nice enough to check that first in the comments :)

    Hi everyone,

So I am in the middle of getting all the parts I need for my next build to replace my last my PC which I built all the way back in 2013(!), and I'm kinda unsure what to do about the monitor.

I've only ever had a 1080p monitor that went up to 60hz, and I've never experienced anything higher than that (resolution or frame rates).

So getting to the point, I'm looking at monitors available in my region and I'm seeing a ton of 2k monitor options with refresh rates in the range of 120hz~165hz, good response times etc, but most of the 4k monitors I'm able to find cap out at 60hz.

This might be due to cost settings and region - I'm in Japan and I'm definitely not looking at $1k monitors or anything insane - mostly around the $300~$400+ range.

That said let's assume those are my only options (unless someone can link me a high refresh rate 4k monitor I can afford that also ships to Japan) -

So, I am sure this is very dependant on the individual but, which is more important? 4k or high refresh rate? I haven't experienced either, so I am having a hard time deciding what to do here.

For what it's worth, I'm trying to get a monitor size of 32" or similar. PC will have a 3080 or 3090 in it (believe it or not they have stock in stores where I am lol) and a top tier CPU to go with it.

Any thoughts or advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Does undervolting a GPU actually increase efficiency?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:39 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I've seen many reviews of people reporting that undervolting saves them x Watts of power without any loss in FPS. Can this be true?

In my mind a GPU with lower voltage levels and the same power limit would just draw more current and thus get about equally as hot and efficient as before. What is my mistake here? Or do the undervolters also lower the power limit?

    Thanks.

PC lags when twitch is open while gaming, cause for concern?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:23 AM PST

Hi I've been having a problem for a while where my PC acts pretty slow when I game. I recently got an RTX 3070 and never had this problem with my old PC. I asked a while back about my Pc crashing and they told me to RMA the card. Turns out the issue was a piece of software I installed and my Pc hasn't crashed since, but Twitch streams/YouTube video in the background are still unwatchable as they drop the majority of their frames and buffer. I had to turn off hardware acceleration for chrome. Still think my cards busted and I should RMA it before it gets worse?

Are there any X99 Xeon cpu's better than an fx 8350 for gaming?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:53 AM PST

I've seen a few posts about the older Xeon's being pretty good for gaming and usually much cheaper than their i5/i7 counterparts, but I don't really know all that much about Xeon's.

Currently my girlfriend has an fx 8350 at stock clocks because the motherboard isn't good enough to overclock, the thing she wants to play the most is Sims 4 but once you get a decent sized house the game really starts to slow down for that cpu, so I thought I'd look for a cheap Xeon and a decent overclockable motherboard as an upgrade, I may even be able to get it for around the price I'd sell the fx 8350 + motherboard for.

So basically what would be the best price to performance xeon I can get? I know the used market fluctuates but I'm willing to wait for a good deal to pop up, so should I just try to get the best xeon that board supports or is there a point where the higher end ones don't do much more than a lower end one?

For example I've heard the difference between an i7 6700k and an i5 6600k is barely any but the price difference is pretty big, is that the same case for the higher end Xeon's?

I tried to compare some of them but those benchmark sites aren't exactly accurate to real world performance and idk how accurate old reviews are compared to the newer games we have now.

Debating on Parts to stay in the Budget - Any help is appreciated

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:26 PM PST

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I intend on using this build for gaming and some video recording/editing as a youtuber

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Well i already got a Monitor which is a 75Hz 1080p monitor. And i would like to play most popular games on medium to high settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Around 700-750$ would be my maximum budget on the build.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    North Macedonia

Hello there everyone i would really appreciate your help on this build as i need to stay in the budget which was 700-750€ and so far with the specs that i chose i am far exceeding it.

I was debating whether to change the 2060 for a ordinary 1660 which is 250 here but some friends were saying that i should also take the 1660 TI into consideration but it's the same price as the 2060 so that is a bit on the expensive side.

For the processors they were saying that i should get some of the newer generation like the CPU Intel Core i5-10400F which is around 153 which is 10 euro more expensive than the other one but if i go for that one i will need to change the MB as well.

I would really much appreciate it if someone that is more knowledgeable than me can at least point me in the right direction where i can get the optimal build for those money. I have been waiting for 2 years now and finally i wanted to do that but i need to stay in the budget frame but i can't decide what to lower.

Thank you in advance for your help and taking a bit of your time!

Someone else who decided to not bother with building a PC in a while?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:45 PM PST

Have you guys also given up? I've always lived after "If you wait you will get something better but you will wait forever", cause there is always going to come something better and if you want to enjoy something right now then buy it now. Of course you should wait if something new launches in a month or two but a year and so on is not justifiable.

I wonder how many people who are buying old and new cards right now are going to try to sell their cards for a high price in the future when they won't get a fraction of that price anymore, atleast for the old cards that are over priced. Isn't it actually better to wait a year and see what happens? The only thing that is actually worth to buy in the graphics card department is a 3080 in Scandinavia and no one in their right mind is buying a 3090 for 2500$ or a 6900XT for 17-2000$. Is this the first time that we all should just be patient and wait? Even if it means waiting for a year?

Building a PC with my GF PLEASE HELP

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:44 PM PST

So like I barely know anything And I'm trying to get the best shit for her.

Parts we have * Ryzen 5 3600 * B450 Tomahawk Max * 16GB ram * ID cooling Pink CPU fan (or whatever it's called)

THINGS YET TO GET * 650w PSU (any recommendations for PSU btw?) * dark flash Pink ATX case (which we also have to wait for to restock LOL. She really wants a pink case but any recommendations would also be helpful since she really wants it done yk?)

    BUT

My plan was to get a RTX 2060 SUPER which I saw online would really give the best outcome with her build. But It's sold out and being resold for so much. Anyways, should we wait for the RTX 2060 super to restock. (I read also that it wouldn't but yk that's why I'm asking Reddit for help lol) OR is there a better option to go with or a decent option or sum dunno

EDIT: None of the parts have been purchased yet and the price of the parts listed is auto-populated. Such as in the case of the GPU, the GPU is subject to change based on availability and pricing.

Planning to build a pc, but have next to 0 idea how

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:00 AM PST

Hey everyone, I plan on buying a PC for playing games and schoolwork. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this build: (budget is 50k PHP or around 1k USD)

    CPU: Intel Core i5-9400F
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1660-Ti
    SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (2016)
    RAM: Kingston HyperX 2666 C16 1x16GB
    MBD: Gigabyte GA-H310M S2H 2.0

    Alternative
    CPU: Intel Core i5-10400F
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1660-Ti
    SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (2016)
    RAM: Kingston HyperX 2666 C16 1x16GB
    MBD: Gigabyte B460M DS3H

I also can't build the PC itself, and I have a used TV (that I think can be used for PCs). As for the Case, I'll look for glass case as suggested by a friend. Is there something I'm missing, or need to improve?

So today my pc froze, couldn't do anything, ctrl-alt-del wouldn't work and my power button and reset wouldn't work. So, I hard reset a few times and it kept freezing, then it just stopped turning on completely. I opened her up and there was some drops of water in there from my vape and I've cleaned everything and re-applied thermal paste to my GPU. I put her back together and now only the case lights come on and the Fans spin but no display and no lights from my keyboard and mouse. Is this a possible motherboard or PSU issue?

My build won't boot and I would love some help!

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:24 PM PST

Hello everyone, just looking for some advice on what to do.

    So essentially I have a brand new build that I have been working on for a bit:Motherboard: ASRock B550CPU: Ryzen 5 3600SSD: WD Black 500GB nvmePSU: ARESGAME Power Supply 650W 80+ Bronze Certified PSURAM: Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200GPU: GIGABYTE Radeon RX 580 GAMING 8G (rev. 2.0) Graphics Card

This build has worked like a dream for me for the past couple of weeks and has let me start playing some of the newer games that my old laptop has not allowed me to. However, around 3 days ago, the PC shut off and will not boot up anymore.

All that happens when I press the power switch is all the fans turn on, case and CPU, and the DRAM and CPU LEDs light up on the motherboard. Nothing else happens, it doesn't boot up, the screen does not turn on, and the peripherals do not do anything either.

Essentially I have tried everything that I could think of:- All the power things: Leaving it unplugged for 2 hours, holding the power button, you name it.- I tried disconnecting everything including the monitor to see if I could get just my keyboard to start working.- I tried booting into BIOs but since the keyboard does not work it has not helped- I reset my CMOS and nothing happened- I even bought 2 new brand new sticks of VENGEANCE ram to see if the ram was the issue.

Currently, I am thinking that the CPU is the issue, and I am planning on replacing that. However, I am going to give it one last shot by making this post to see if anyone has any idea on what it is/ what to do. If you would like any more build details / me to try anything out I would be happy to do so.

    Thank you!

P.S. An upvote would greatly help this post get viewed by people who may know how to help and is much appreciated.
