This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Why is 3600 mHz the best for Ryzen CPU's?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:05 AM PST

Ever since I've started planning my PC everyone has been telling me to get 3600 RAM because I'm running a Ryzen CPU. Why is this the case? And is it fine if I only get 3200 RAM?

    Edit: I've bought a Ryzen 5 5600X if anyone's interested

Edit 2: I've gone back to my very first choice of RAM which I switched a while back. It's 3200 and CL 16. Here's the Amazon link, can anyone tell me if this is an ok choice? Thanks in advance!

Edit 3: I've settled on the RAM from the previous edit I posted. I know it's not the greatest and the timings could be better but its perfect for my budget and at least it's not the worst. If anyone was wondering, I don't intend to overclock anything right now, maybe in the future, but that's for when I get better RAM xD. Thank you for all the up votes too, they mean a lot. You can see my full build here if you're interested!

I game daily with 2 of my 3 best friends. The third doesn’t have a PC. I have a bunch of old parts. Behold the trash can

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:32 PM PST

The front panel for the case was broken so I had to make a "front panel" out of dust covers

Pieced together from old parts I had laying around. Hopefully it'll run Valorant/Warzone on low/1080p at decent FPS.

    FX-6300, HD 7850, 8gb DDR3

EDIT: All the offers to donate spare parts is overwhelming and honestly so kind. I am turning everyone away as I already gave him the PC. Please connect with each other and help spread the PC building and gaming love. It makes me really happy to see so much wholesomeness in this community with everything negative going on in the world. Love you all and happy building!

    Cases do matter!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST

So just want to get this out there since i experienced this,

Last october I completed my first build, with a 3900xt, and a rtx 3080. Not knowing that a case could matter that much i just purchased a fractal design focus g for around 40 euro's. But last week i felt like buying a new case, the Fractal was one fairly good for its price but had no psu shroud and generally just looked a bit bland.

So yesterday i upgraded my case to a corsair 4000D airflow, first of all it looks beautifull. However what amazed me the most was that my temps in game were as much as 10c lower under full load.

AC Valhalla in the Fractal design focus G, average 64c

AC valhalla in the corsair 4000d airflow, average 54c

Keep in mind I used the same fans, 3 intake corsair LL series 120 and 2 outtake bequiet pure wings 2.

Quite amazed by this, and wanted to get this out here!

Why you shouldn't buy single RGB/ARGB fans

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST

Many fans require hubs or a converter cable that do not come in single packs. Notorious examples include single Corsair fans, where one $25-30USD fan turns into a $60USD setup with the cheapest required hub (Lighting Node Core), or Phanteks/Deepcool fans, where they only include adapters with 2 or 3 packs of fans. It's even worse when the Phanteks/Deepcool converter to motherboard ARGB is very hard to find, I have to tell people to buy a ARGB strip just to find the JST-SM ARGB to motherboard 3-pin ARGB.

This is also ignoring the fact you most likely don't need one fan at all. Often, people are buying them as an exhaust for a mesh case with 2 or 3 RGB front fans, which don't need them at all. Multiple tests with mesh-fronted cases prove that exhaust fans have little to no impact in (0-1.5C difference) CPU/GPU temps.

There are certainly exceptions to this. If you have a compatible hub/converter and won't sleep easy knowing there isn't an exhaust fan, $25USD might not be the worst idea.

After being on here for years, I finally did my first full PC build!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:21 PM PST

here are a couple of pictures

This whole process was super fun. I've been wanting to do a full build for maybe 7 or 8 years but was never able until now. Didn't even have anything go wrong in the build!

All new parts except the graphics card, since I'm using a 1080p monitor I figure it'll do me fine for a while yet. I also thought the case would be smaller, so I got an SFX PSU and needed to get some extension cables. Here are the specs.

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

Mobo: MSI B450M BAZOOKA MAX WIFI

GPU: Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 Mini

    PSU: Corsair SF600 600W

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz

    SSD: Crucial P1 1TB M.2

    HDD: WD40EZRZ 4TB 5400RPM

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Mini

    Should I buy a RTX 3060ti for 600$?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:28 PM PST

I have a friend selling a Asus Dual RTX 3060ti OC Edition. The MSRP is 500$ and he didn't feel like scalping the card, so he said he was willing to sell it to me for 600$. Ik the GPU market is screwed up rn especially with tariffs in place should I just wait for them to restock, or play it safe and buy it?

Is it difficult to update the bios?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:12 AM PST

So I bought a Aorus B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 as well as a Ryzen 5 5600x, and according to pc part picker I will need to do a bios update in order for it to recognise this CPU. The thought of bricking it scares me. Got any tips for me?

So my new pc turns on, but it seems like no power goes to the gpu. After this I tried the on board DVI and HDMI slots, but neither of those would output. I tried reseating RAM, unplugging and replugging just about everything, switching monitors, and a couple other things. Still no signal to monitor.

    3600 or 5600x

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:43 AM PST

Is the 5600x really worth the extra money over the 3600. I have the money for either however its stock and I'd like to get my pc built asap. I will be playing mainly 1440p but 1080p for a whlie. I have a 3070 FE. I will also be using it for productivity but mainly gaming. i can get the 3600 for £171 and the 5600x for £252

I currently have an i7-4790K @ 4Ghz that i bought in 2015. I want to buy a new graphics card. Despite the problems in availability, would it even make sense to buy a RTX 3080 or similar or would my CPU bottleneck the PC too much for games like Cyberpunk?

    Perplexing RAM Post Mystery

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:00 PM PST

    I just built a PC using a DDR4 3200 MHz Corsair Dominator 8 GB x 4 kit.

My motherboard, the ASUS X570 Prime Pro needed a bios update to work with my Ryzen 5600x CPU.

I used a Ryzen 2600x to do so, and it booted into bios just fine with all 4 sticks of RAM installed.

Post-bios update and CPU swap, the PC wouldn't boot. DRAM light was lit up, so I removed two sticks of RAM.

    BAM- Post.

Added two sticks back, no post.

So I began the RAM troubleshooting.

Three sticks work fine together, regardless of slot.

The fourth stick won't boot in dual channel, but will work just fine in any of the four slots so long as it's in single channel. It will even work with another stick of RAM so long as they're both in single channel.

But they all four worked fine together with a 2600x.

I backdated the bios to the latest stable release that supports 5000 series CPUs and the issue persists. I've messed with XMP settings, running at both 2666 MHz and 3200 MHz, no dice.

    Any ideas?

I Need help with a new graphic card

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:01 AM PST

I Just got my GEFORCE GTX 1650 D6 VENTUS XS OCV2 wich shouldn't require a PCI cable to work, but after i removed my old Graphic Card and installed the 1650 i Just got a nice "no signal" from my HDMI monitor/s. The gpu fans keep being off so i guess It doesnt get Power from my motherboard slots, should i buy the PCI cable and try again? Or Is the gpu probably broken?

My wife has a 144mhz monitor and a 60mhz monitor connected to her PC, but games say the "display FPS" is only 60mhz. But my setup which is 144mhz and 60mhz does not.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:25 PM PST

So to quickly summarize, my wife has 2 monitors, one is 144hz, the other is 60hz. Overwatch (for example) says her display FPS is only 60hz. I've updated the drivers, I'm using a display port cable, and in Nvidia control panel I've set the display refresh rate to 144hz. Even testufo.com is showing her 144hz monitor as only being 60mhz until I disable the 2nd monitor.

If I disable her 60hz monitor, Overwatch (for example) will say her display FPS is 144hz no issue.

My setup is pretty much the exact same, except I have a 165hz monitor and a 60hz monitor. Every game I play that has a (FPS = display FPS) says my refresh rate is 165 without any issue. Even the testufo.com shows my FPS is 165 without any issue.

So whats happening? How can I get games and stuff to recognize her gaming monitor as 144hz by default? Like mine.

Budget PC Advice - How do I save money, and is this build decent?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST

I have a really low budget, around $600 CAD, which I know is not going to get me the best PC. I don't run heavy games at all, just League, Minecraft, Rocket League, etc.

My friend made me this build and I was wondering if anyone had some input, maybe a cheaper alternative to some of the choices, whether the components are good enough for my needs, etc. Thank you!

So my pc isn't performing as well as it used to.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

So long story short, about a year ago, I purchased a used pc for 600€.

    And The specs were:

    -Gtx 1070

    -i5 7400

    -8Gb Ram

    -Z270-A PRO (Motherboard)

    - Power Smart GPS-750C (Power supply)

! month after I purchased my pc, I bought 1 more 8Gb ram stick, that wasn't even the same brand. I also bought a new case. Idk if this helps, but my CPU cooler is still the stock one. A couple of months ago, when I played Warzone, everything was ok, but now It's basically unplayable, the fps by itself is terrible (30 fps average) and there are frequent frame drops. I also ran a Benchmark test, and my CPU and GPU were below average. What should I do?

Edit: I should also add, that the first time I played warzone, I was at max settings, and It ran like butter, but the second time, At the lowest settings it was slower than a dead snail.

    Troubleshooting Help:

So in my last post, I couldn't get signs of life in my build. The fans would barely flicker alive for a second before dying. Advice from people here was to RMA the MOBO.

Just got the new MOBO installed, and its booting, showing signs of life (fans and RGB light up). But the EZDebug white LED on ( for the CPU) comes on solid, and can't get a signal to the monitor.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

    Getting CPU working (details above).

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Took the CPU to be tested to ensure its functional (it is) Reseated everything (ram, cpu, all cables, etc.) Paperclip tested the PSU Pulled the CMOS Double checked the position of all the standoffs, making sure that none were incorrectly installed Removed all extraneous components Triple checked PSU cables plugged in right places Double checked mobo/CPU compatibility

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I figured maybe the first faulty mobo fried the CPU as well, took back to the store, they ran it on their test bench without issue.

Does more RAM increase system instability? 4x16GB vs 2x16GB vs 4x8GB

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 11:33 AM PST

I've seen a lot of posts about people asking if they should get 64GB of RAM vs 32GB (or even 16GB) and the answer always seems to be based on budget or "bang for your buck". But would having too much ram (64GB) actually make the system more unstable? Would it run better with only 2 x 16GB? Ultimately should I get rid of the 4 x 16 and get 4 x 8?

Now, I already own 64GB of ram from an "old" TR 1950x workstation (4x16 GSkill CL16 3200). My new gaming rig has a 5900x and an RTX 3090 sitting on a Crosshair Hero VIII WiFi x570. I have the latest BIOS (albeit in Beta) and have not overclocked anything (currently not even XMP / DOCP enabled) and so far I've gotten more BOSD in 3 weeks (once every 2/3 days) than in 3 or 4 years of keeping my i7700K (32GB Gskill Cl16 3200 + GTX 1080) running 24/7 (maybe got a handful of BOSD total).

My cpu runs pretty cool (in the 30s on idle, might go up to the 70s on load) and the GPU just stays in the 60's on regular loads. So I don't think it's a temperature issue.

I ran a passmark MemTest with 0 errors (that sucker took 9.5 hours to run!) . But it shows that 3 sticks are pc4-25600 DDR4 XMP 3200Mhz 16-18-18-38 and the 4th stick is Pc4-17000 DDR4 2134Mhz 15-15-15-36 (the sticks came in a kit). Is this an issue with the amount of ram, the mobo can't handle 64GB at these speeds so bottlenecks the last stick causing some instability? Is that a known limitation or should i assume one of the stick is out of wack?

As always, thanks for your input!

Note: when i activate DOCP my CPU idles at 3599MHz on all cores for some reason and still shows the stick on slot 4 running at a lower speed, CAS, and lower voltage (1.2 vs 1.35).

---> Edit: One of the sticks was in fact PC4-17000 with no XMP/DOCP (even though it looks the exact same as the other ones). I guess Gskill scammed me when i bought the kit 3 years ago. I replaced it and they are now all showing as PC4-25600 with XMP Profiles. Hopefully, that was the reason for the instability and I can keep the 64GB. <---

Dad smashed old pc, gpu looks fine but won’t boot in new pc

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST

I don't wanna get into why he smashed it but the gpu looks like it doesn't have any physical damage as the pc case I had was weird with a graphics card compartment. When I turn my pc on with it in, one fan turns on when they usually all turned on and it spins for a little and turns off with no display. I tried my friends high end pc that should have no issues and still the same issue. Any ideas to why it may be doing this? It is unrelated to power supply or motherboard.

I would just get a new card but there are none in stock anywhere for a reasonable price card: xfx rx 570 8gb

    Will a 500W PSU handle an RTX3070

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 11:52 AM PST

Soo I have a ryzen 5 2600, I know its a CPU that is not very good, but I normally play games that dont need much of the CPU and more of the GPU, my current GPU is an ASUS RADEON RX580 DUAL 8GB OC, but I have a 144hz monitor and im not getting that much FPS so I feel like im lagging (and I am), I pretend to buy the RTX3070 because its a very good graphics card for a good price, but my PSU is a COOLER MASTER MASTERWATT LITE 500 500W 80PLUS WHITE, I need to know if my PSU will handle it, im planning on going from pre-built to custom I will start by buying the GPU, then the PSU and CPU, i would also like to know what kind of CPU you guys recommend! Btw i have tested my cou (ryzen 5 2600 and the rtx3070 and at 1080p there is basically no bottleneck) PLEASE SHARE A GOOD PSU THAT AS 750W

Built new PC, not turning on. PSU Making clicking sound.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:02 AM PST

So I just finished building a new pc, after my old one broke. It doesn't seem to want to turn on. My motherboard and CPU are both new, I've tested my PSU (paperclip) and it works, so I'm not sure what the issue might be. My ram and GPU are both from my old PC, and I haven't tested them yet. Older PC had an intel chip but this time I switched to Ryzen.

Whenever I press the power button, my psu makes a clicking sound, but otherwise nothing. I can confirm that nothing is shorting the motherboard in the case (I tried it on a non conductive surface). I'm kinda stumped here. Thanks in advance for the help!
