Laptop for university and music production Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:23 PM PST I'm going back to uni next year and looking for a new laptop that caters to all of that. Moreover, I wish to record some piano tracks with my digital keyboard. But I want to get further into music production with Ableton/Reason etc. Finally, I have a lot of documents stored over the years that I upload to Google Drive (about 300-500gb), but I also like the idea of having local access to my files. Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1000-1200AUD in Australia Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I may want a good processor in case I want to do some causal gaming? Performance and battery life are important to me, especially as I want to have no issues with music production and use my laptop in class. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe some causal gaming, but no specific games come to mind. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a high priority. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A keyboard with a numberpad on the right. USB 3. A fast hard drive. Don't care about a finger print reader but I guess it could be cool? Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Nothing else comes to mind. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

£1200, UK
Yes, but only with a significant warranty and from the manufacturer.
Build quality > performance, form factor, battery life
I'd prefer a lighter/thinner laptop but I'm not too worried as long as it's reasonably portable
13-14 inches
Graphical performance is unimportant
n/a
Build quality is very important. Intel cpus are preferred to AMD.
I use a lot of scientific packages which are far better optimised for Intel than AMD cpus so an AMD cpu would have to be significantly better than its Intel counterpart for me to consider it. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a school laptop recommendation Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:05 AM PST Hey guys! As the title suggests I am looking for a school laptop. Is this a good choice for light gaming? Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:48 PM PST I don't have a huge budget and this laptop seems okay. The stuff i want to do with it is run minecraft well, and just in general be a good and fast laptop. The thing im worried about is that it says it's Windows 10 S, and according to google you can only use things downloaded from the store, which isn't what i want. Is it possible to change this laptop to normal windows 10 and for it to run well on windows 10? [link] [comments] |

Note: Razer is 100£ (140usd roughly) cheaper Processor: I know ryzen9 is much better than i7 (30-40%) Graphics: but not sure how much RTX2070 is better than RTX2060? ~7% ish? Preference: I also prefer quieter laptops during office tasks or web browsing... I have an external monitor so screen wouldn't matter much but a plus, I don't use trackpad either. Speakers might matter a bit. Main usage: office suite, editing/exporting videos, playing dota 2 and opening 30 tabs for web browsing Welcome to leave your comments please thanks everyone and happy new year 2021. Razer or Predator? (Heavily modded Sims games with lots of CC) Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:42 AM PST I'm looking to play a lot of Sims games with heavy modding/cc. I've been recommended the Predator but it's kind of bulky. I'm open to getting refurbished of either. I can afford Predator new, but a new Razer's out of my price range ($1500 max). Leads on trusted sellers are appreciated. Already been screwed over by a "qualified seller" on ebay and I'm a bit wary. A laptop for school/software development/light gaming for $1500-2000 AUD? Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:32 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
For comparison, my old PC had an intel i7 2600, a GTX 970 and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and it was perfect for everything I wanted to do. I don't know if that helps, but I have heard that's pretty old for gaming PCs now, but I'm not sure how that compares to modern laptops? edit: lol at whoever went through new and downvoted everyone else's posts so theirs gets seen first [link] [comments] |

A work and school thin n' light for someone without much of a budget Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:31 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**
I know it's a stretch at this budget and apologies if the budget is just too low, but a laptop for portability and battery life while working and studying when I don't have access to my desktop is currently what I'm looking for. Chromebooks are a huge no tho, as Photoshop is a necessity (along of few other random programs). Replaceable SSD would also be a plus, but again not necessary. Thanks for any help . :) [link] [comments] |
Thinkpad P1 vs XPS 17 9700? Please help! Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:30 PM PST I need a laptop for programming and novel writing. It needs to be heavy-duty as I would work on it 8 to 12 hours a day. A GPU is not useful for me at all. I wonder which one between XPS 17 and P1 has better quality? I would expect my next laptop to last for four to five years. If both are of similar quality, I would probably go with XPS 17 for its bigger screen. Are there any defects about the two laptops? Please help me to choose between the two. Thanks! Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $800, USA Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, Ultrabook, battery life How important is weight and thinness you? Semi-important as I anticipate traveling with this computer but I don't want to compromise a lot of performance to prioritize ultra light. I would rather deal with something a bit bulkier that's more reliable. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Youtube, Netflix, Online Classes (must have good camera/microphone as I anticipate teaching English with this computer) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? Must have all the capabilities to offer a good webcam experience Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This computer is for general use and for teaching. I anticipate being abroad and teaching students virtually on the side, while also pursing a master's online (however master's will be humanities oriented). Therefore, looking for something ideally lighter weight with a decent battery for traveling, but most importantly, something that will give me the ability to do good quality streams with students. Thank you so much in advance as I am really not computer savvy so if there is anything else I should take into consideration regarding what I will be using my computer for, please let me know. Gaming laptops with Removable Battery? Posted: 02 Jan 2021 12:45 PM PST Are there any decent gaming laptops/laptop capable of mediocre gaming out there with removable batteries? I want to use it as a desktop plugged in 24/7 when I'm home so the removable aspect is a must to me, however, it can be any laptop 2010-2020. Doesn't necessarily have to be a ''gaming'' branded laptop as long as it sports a GTX 980 or up. - No specific budget, just nothing $2000+ crazy - I'm completely fine with Refurbished - Other stipulations would just be preferably i5, 1080p and 8GB minimum. IPS screen if possible. Any size/weight/keyboard etc. laptop is fine sporting those specs. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
USA $600 - 900 General purpose laptop for graduate school. Some gaming on the side. Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:17 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: -would like to stay under $900 if possible Are you open to refurbs/used? -would prefer new, but I am not completely opposed How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? -performance, battery life, build quality, battery life, form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? -not that important, but it'd be nice to have something on the thinner side Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -at least 15 in. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -quite a bit of Video/photo editing. I'll be using a ton of R, a ton of Zoom based classes/meetings, and software for tracking organism movement (EthoVision, toxtrac, etc.), I think the most demanding game would be The Witcher 3 If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -I'd like to run the Witcher on somewhat high settings Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -this may not be possible, but it'd be nice to have a disc drive, other than that a good keyboard and good build quality Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -I'm definitely prioritizing studies over the gaming, and if I could find something that would accommodate the other programs other than games very well at a cheaper price I am all ears. I'd like to purchase something very soon, but if I could get a better deal by waiting I do not mind at all. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
