Linux on the OnePlus 6 and 6T

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 05:07 PM PST

Hi all, I've seen a few posts flying around on here and the forum regarding Linux on OnePlus phones and thought I'd post here to mention that I've been working on bringing mainline Linux to the devices. Basically, the exact same kernel that your PC might run.

We're still in pretty early stages of development, with most of the features you'd expect on a phone still pretty broken. Haptics, sensors, audio, camera, phone calls / mobile data all don't work yet.

However, if you're interested in messing about with postmarketOS and Linux on the device, you can!

I would highly recommend you only attempt this if you're comfortable flashing to your device, and bare in mind that this isn't Android, an Android ROM or Linux on top of Android (like SailfishOs and Ubuntu Touch which both essentially run Android under the hood). It's just plain Linux, the experience will be drastically different what you're used to. You can however dual boot (due to the fact that the device has 2 slots).

Here's a screenshot of both devices running postmarketOS with the Phosh UI: https://s.connolly.tech/linux-oneplus6.jpg

You can get a more detailed list of features on the wiki page for the device: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/OnePlus_6_(oneplus-enchilada)

And install it from here: https://github.com/calebccff/pmos-oneplus6

I'm in the process of upstreaming patches for the device, which basically means the 6 and 6T will be "officially" supported by the Linux kernel!

Pretty much none of this would have been possible without the help of the great postmarketOS guys, from helping me fix bugs, to providing a great mobile OS - https://postmarketos.org.

To the mods: I'm posting this in the hopes it can raise some awareness about bringing Linux to Android phones, giving more freedom to users and extending the lifespan of their devices, however I'm happy to remove the post if you think it violates self promotion rules.

"Optimize the stability of some third-party applications and improve the experience" Has anyone figured out what this actually means? It's on the patch notes for the OOS11 Open Beta update for the OP7Pro

Any explanation would be appreciated as I couldn't find anything on Google, thanks!

7 Pro on OOS 11 Open Beta 1

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:33 PM PST

Its actually pretty stable. It is different and i guess it just takes some getting used to, its actually pretty functional. Fully immersive mode is gone sadly and the dark mode doesn't looks worse imo. Canvas is really neat but i used amoled wallpapers most of the time. Battery seems to be the same, cant tell a difference (stand by might be slightly better tho) here's to hoping it'll get better and im a tiny bit optimistic

Best thin oneplus 7 pro case?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:23 PM PST

As title said above. Looking for something that's gonna provide basic protection while not increasing the form factor by a lot and preferable keeps the buttons open. Any suggestions? I was considering the sandstone from the store but it's currently not working with my card. For details I'm in the U.S

    Carrier help?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 08:34 PM PST

Just got my OnePlus 8t today and I'm loving it. But, I'm in North America and have Verizon, and while the calls are crystal clean and the speeds are as fast as my last 5G phone, even being limited to lte, I want to know how anyone else went about getting their text on this device and carrier? All outbound make it, but inbound never show. Tried calling customer service today to ask about the cdmaless thing, and she had no clue what I was talking about.. do I just need to call again/go in store tomorrow?

My Oneplus 8 Pro Keeps randomly powering Off Lately

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:28 PM PST

I've had this phone a few months now. I've upgraded from the 6T and never had any issues with that one. Now with this OnePlus 8 pro that I got from a Amazon warehouse deal is causes me several issues. First thing was the screen would randomly tint to a yellow color randomly. It hasn't happened lately but that was a issue. Now the past few weeks I've been having the phone randomly turn off completely at random times. It powers down completely and I have to start it up each time.Yesterday it happened 3 times and today it happened twice within 5 minutes. If this is going to keep happening I might need to look into getting a different phone. I use my phone everyday for work and can't have this keep happening. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thank you.

OP7 Android 11 beta missing screenshot controls

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:16 PM PST

Where are the screenshot controls normally present on power button? Or if not there, then on pure Android you can hold the change window button and it will be there.

Where is the replacement? I don't want to do the two button hold for screenshot option.

Anyone on Android 11 that can test snapchat? [OP7]

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:37 PM PST

Apparently Android 11 has better support for camera apps such as Snapchat, the app is notoriously bad for the zoomed in selfie camera, if anyone can test this out I'd like to know.

How to change the lockscreen clock on OOS 11?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:00 PM PST

Just updated to OOS 11 beta on my 7Pro and can't find how to change the look of the lock screen clock (not ambient display). It's now aligned to the left, and I want it to be in the center.

O7T home screen layout reset after update

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST

Hey folks, I use the Poco Launcher and after updating to the latest beta the home screen layout got reset, which wouldn't be that big of a deal honestly, I can recover some parts from a screenshot. The issue is that the option for 5+1 app rows is gone now. Don't know if it was an update or whatever. I actually wanted to ask if it's safe to update settings/apps from an older OnePlus switch backup, if it'll bring back the home screen layout with 5+1 rows...

How do you update to android 11 with twrp and root without loosing root access?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

Is it the same a normal software update, which doesn't delete data nor remove root? Or is it different because of android 11?

anyone else's OP7Pro camera and flashlight suddenly stop working?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:01 PM PST

I've got an unlocked oneplus 7 pro purchased directly from oneplus back in 2019, and a few days ago suddenly the camera app stopped working. to be more specific, opening the camera app results in a black screen and the back button does not exit the camera app. the flashlight shortcut is greyed out and unresponsive. no other apps that use camera can get even a camera preview.

Additionally, the youtube app gets stuck in an infinite loading screen and never gets any content.

i've done a full factory reset, cache wipe, and tried on multiple versions of oxygen OS. Oxygen os 10, 10 beta 19, and the new 11 beta that was released all have this problem.

oxygen os 9 does not have that specific issue, but instead only the front camera does not work. the rear one works fine. youtube works in oos9. After updating over the air back to oos 10, everything is broken again.

Does anyone here have any ideas? i've managed to find a handful of others with similar issues, but i'm seriously confused as to how this happened. oneplus support is supremely useless, as they keep saying to factory reset the phone or clear cache, even after i inform them that i've already done that.

What am I gonna loose if I use 8t instead of 8 Pro?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:44 PM PST

So basically I got a deal from T-Mobile where I can get the One Plus 8t+ 256GB 5G for $400 with tax, but unfortunately they do not have the One Plus 8 Pro. I did some research and found that 8 Pro is a much better phone. Since I already placed the order I just want to know what am I going to be loosing on if I use the 8t instead of the 8 Pro? I do prefer a flat display and I am switching from a galaxy S10.
From what I found it's the Wireless Charging, and a bad camera system, and a 1080p display instead of 1440p. I don't really care about Wireless Charging but how bad is the camera? What about the display? Anything will be appreciated. Thnk you.

Audio keeps dipping, anyone got solutions?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:17 PM PST

I just made the switch from iphone to android. Got myself a oneplus nord and I'm having quite a few teething issues. The main one I'm tryna fix at the moment is audio dipping though. I don't know if this is just a oneplus thing or if it's all android phones but it sounds like they've put a gate on the audio output. Whenever there is a silent part in a video, I'll hear a bit of background noise but then it'll fade to complete silence before a louder sound comes along. Anyone else having the same issue or knows what settings to change? Why the fuck would they add this anyway, it's absolutely useless.

    Random freezes with OnePlus 8T

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:28 AM PST

So now it was the 7th time that my OnePlus 8T randomly freezes in the middle of a game. It was on version 11.0.5.6. Now I updated it to version 11.0.6.9 today, hoping that it will change something. I've read a lot about freezing issues with oneplus phones on reddit. Did someone already noticed an issue with the new update? Is there a way to fix these freezes?
