    Terminal emulators - I don't get it

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:39 AM PST

    Hi folks

I have been dabbling with Linux for a couple of years (though very much still a noob) and wanted to ask about terminal emulators.

There are umpteen different emulators (not to mention shells) but I don't understand what the differences between them are. You see videos and recommendations for this or that emulator but as far as I can make out they are essentially all the same.

Some emulators are said to be more feature rich than others but what does this consist of? As far as I can make out, it the only difference is in looks (font, prompt, etc.) and possibly speed (though surely this is very marginal).

You input a command and run it. That's it. Am I wrong?

Virtualbox on a libreboot computer (x200) running debian

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:34 PM PST

Is this possible? I can't seem to figure it out and keep getting error messages. Not much info online, but I've read that it could be something about libreboot that might be preventing this from working. Thank you!

    Can I combine partitions?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:37 PM PST

I was following a tutorial for installing Linux Mint alongside Win10 and it told me to create a separate partition for "/" and "/home" as well as a "swap".

I regret doing this now instead of putting it all in one partition (except for swap) since my etc, opt, and other folders are now inside a partition with only 30GB free space. Is it possible to combine this partition with my home partition without erasing any data?

    Install on SD card

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:32 PM PST

Hey, I was wondering about whether or not it would be possible to do a persistent install on an SD card such that I could slide it into any computer and boot up into my preferred distro (KDE Neon for right now). I'm trying atm but having a bit of difficulty when it's asking me to partition my drive. I know I need to partition some for system and maybe swap etc. but I'm not particularly well versed with that.

I would normally do a dual boot, but for several reasons that is not an ideal situation for me right now so, it would be best if I could simply have a persistent install on an SD card.

My question then, I suppose, is if it's possible to permenantly install a distro of Linux on an SD card and utilize the available space (128 GB). If so, how should I partition the SD card?

    Thanks so much in advance

Wi-Fi Drivers not included w/ Kubuntu?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:52 AM PST

I've installed Linux several times on old laptops before, but now that I'm trying it on my new desktop I'm having some issues. I'm trying to install the latest version of Kubuntu, and the main issue that I think is behind all the others is my lack of WiFi connectivity. My motherboard, the Asrock B550i Phantom Gaming, has built-in wifi that isn't being detected for some reason. I had a similar issue at first when trying to install Windows from an old CD, but installing from USB fixed the issue - presumably because the correct drivers weren't included with the old CD. I'm already using the most recent version of Kubuntu available, 20.10, and I have no idea how to proceed. What should I do?

    adding pub key to authorized_keys

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST

    Hi all,

I work for ABC, and I gave the client for company XYZ the key for user "sftp_xyz" that I created on our server.

They gave me a pub key that they want to use instead for "sftp_xyz" that they use for their own xyz_dev user. I posted it into authorized_keys as "<string> = xyz_dev"

Do I keep "<string> = xyz_dev" (from their generated key), or use our login name with their string "<string> = sftp_xyz"

Testing different distros on Macbook Pro, 15 inch early 2013 model

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:28 PM PST

I've got an early 2013 model Macbook Pro, 15 inch. Currently still running Mojave for compatibility reasons. Checked into the recent Big Sur release, and it looks like I just missed the cutoff for this (late 2013 is the earliest supported model). I wasn't super interested in it anyway, but I'm now wondering if maybe I should just move all my projects over to my Windows desktop anyway, and repurpose my Macbook as a "tinker box" of sorts.

For the past year, I've been messing with various Linux distros, almost exclusively in VMs/on RasPi. I'd like to give it a shot on the Macbook now, but haven't really had much experience with hardware incompatibility/troubleshooting, because lots of these issues are abstracted away when using VMs. Additionally, most of the VMs I spin up are sans GUI, since I'm playing around with bind, raspi projects, proxmox (baremetal for that one), etc.

I'm not ready to nuke the internal drive on the Mac yet, as I need to prep some of my projects (lots of Logic Pro X stuff that I'll just prepare for multitrack exports), but today, I figured I'd give a Fedora live usb a shot for fun. Kept hitting the dracut emergency shell, unless I went to a "basic graphics boot" from the troubleshooting menu. Once I'm in, the wireless chip isn't recognized either (well documented in forums). I'm not tied to any distro at all, and I'm willing to learn and work through all of this, but I'm wondering if it's even worth messing with these bootable thumb drives at this premature stage.

For me to start working through the hardware compat. problems, it seems like I'd want to be able to save the state of the OS while I give various distros a real shot, so I'm not constantly working through issues each time I start it up.

Distros I'm considering currently are pretty much just Arch and Fedora, but I'm open to other ideas. I suppose the question is, is it even worth messing with this stuff now, or should I hold off until I'm ready to start with a clean install on the internal storage? Feel free to suggest other subs as well, if you think somewhere else might be well suited to this rather open-ended question. Thanks in advance!

How do I check from the terminal if the computer is locked or not?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:19 AM PST

I am writing a script to automatically turn on/off the ThinkLight on my Thinkpad if I lock/unlock the machine.

I am able to turn it on/off from the terminal like this:

    echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::thinklight/brightness

    echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::thinklight/brightness

So my bash script should go something like :
if <commands to check if the computer is locked>
    then echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::thinklight/brightness
    else echo o | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::thinklight/brightness
    fi

This should make the LED turn on/off with the computer being locked/unlocked. But I have no idea how to check the locked/unlocked status easily. Even if I got a true/false value, I could write the if statement based on the $? value.

    Suggestions?

Downloading Linux on Lenovo thinkpad x1 yoga gen 4

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:44 PM PST

Disclaimer, I'm a complete beginner, i don't know anything about downloading stuff or code or whatever.

I want to start using Linux for privacy reasons since I've heard that windows isn't very privacy friendly. I just followed a tutorial on how to download Linux mint dual boot with windows 10 and I was successful.

However I just realized that it wasn't compatible with the tablet mode that comes with the thinkpad yoga x1 gen 4. I don't know what I'm supposed to download now and what to do at this point, I'm very lost. I saw some stuff about BIOS or something but I don't wanna just download things without knowing what I'm doing.

Can someone give me a step by step guide on how to download an OS like Linux or Ubuntu or anything that is privacy friendly that works with tablet mode for my laptop? And what should i do with the Linux mint that's on my computer, should I remove it? I would like to keep windows 10 on my computer with the additional OS. Thanks

Also I just bought the laptop so storage isn't an issue

Think I overwrote my hard drive from a USB

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 06:52 AM PST

Welp, I put Linux pop OS on a thumb drive so I could give it a test drive.

So I went into my boot manager and set it to boot from the USB. Booted and did some very basic stuff and that was enough for one day.

Exit, restart, boot manager, windows boot manager, boot. Says I have no OS.

Did I just lose Windows 10 and my files that weren't backed up?

    cp command running slow.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 10:36 AM PST

(Solved) I decided to make a back up and put it on a USB 3.0 drive. The backup is 20.9 GB. I mounted the usb on /mnt/usb/ and started copying by using 'cp -vr'. It's been about an hour now and it's still running, is that normal? It seems kinda slow. It is doing something, the -v option makes it so I see it is copying files, it's just taking a long time. I use arch with kde if that matters.

New CPU and Motherboard, audio jacks don't work

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:21 PM PST

I swapped out my old Intel CPU for a AMD Ryzen with a AsRock B550 Motherboard. Everything works fine except that the audio jacks (both front and back) don't work. HDMI audio does work. I'm running a Linux Mint / Win10 dual boot, same issue in both. I'm suspecting that I need drivers, no idea how to do that.

Cant mount ddrescued iso wrong fs type

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 10:26 AM PST

    Hi

So have been trying to recover as much data as possible from damaged CD with ddrescue after the first command

    sudo ddrescue -b 2048 -n -v /dev/sr0 dvd.iso rescue.log

completed i made a copy of the rescue.log and the iso tried mounting the iso file and it keeps giving this error /mnt/iso: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.

when i try to mount with this

    command sudo mount -o loop Downloads/dvd.iso /mnt/iso

Let me know if you need the log file at the moment i am running

    sudo ddrescue -b 2048 -d -R -r 3 -v /dev/sr0 dvd.iso rescue.log

To scrape failed blocks the first command completed after doing non-trimmed blocks.

I was able to rescue 76.25% till now. This CD has some really important data on it so i really hope i can recover the data and extract it from the iso btw i am using minimal manjaro in a vm

    Thank you :)

Poor battery life under Linux operating systems on MacBook Pro

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:09 PM PST

I've got a 2015 MacBook Pro that I've been wanting to switch over to Linux ever since I upgraded it to macOS 11. I'm not thrilled with its performance (it's not horribly slow, but it's not as snappy as it was with macOS 10) so I've wanted to install a Linux distribution. I've tested Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Elementary OS, Linux Mint, and Pop!_OS, but they've all had the same problem - a hot running laptop and abysmal battery life.

I get that my laptop is no spring chicken, but under macOS 11 I still get about 3-4 hours on a charge (sometimes even 5 hours) and it doesn't run hot at all, it barely even gets warm when I'm doing basic stuff like watching YouTube or browsing the web. Under all Linux distributions I've tested, I'd be lucky to get an hour out of the battery and the laptop ran quite hot, hot enough that the fan runs at 100% most of the time, even when it's just sitting there with no additional applications open.

This is even after making sure all packages were up to date, but past that point I don't really know what to do about that. Those two issues kept me from migrating my MacBook to Linux, though another (somewhat minor) inconvenience I've encountered was a lack of touchpad gestures like what macOS implements, and I don't know if it's possible to get the same kind of gestures under Linux.

Ideally I'd want to use Gnome because that desktop environment scaled really well with my laptop's display as opposed to KDE Plasma which didn't scale well at all. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I really don't want to continue using macOS on this laptop, but at this rate I don't really have any choice.

    Alfa AWUS036H adaptor not working.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 08:26 AM PST

Hello, today i bought a Alfa Awus036h wifi adaptor for my laptop dell inspiron 3542, core i3 4030u running manjaro latest with kernel 5.9. I managed to get it running using command:

    modprobe rtl8187 dmesg | grep rtl8187

by following this guide. The wifi adaptor keeps disconnecting from wifi after 5 seconds or so randomly. If i type 'ifconfig', i can see the wifi adaptor, but if i type 'ifconfig' right after first command, i can not see my wifi adaptor. I am a beginner at linux so i can't seem to find the problem. I searched google but didn't seem to find anything. Help would be greatly appreciated since i don't want this adaptor and my money goto waste.

How to connect to wifi in fresh Manjaro XFCE install

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 11:52 AM PST

I just finished installing Manjaro XFCE and I have no idea how to conenct to wifi. On every previous OS or Linux distro I've used, there would just be an option in settings called Wifi or something and it would show a list of all the Wifi networks and I'd just connect and enter my password. On Manjaro, I'm very confused as to how to connect. There is no simple wifi GUI, and I was not able to figure it out from googling around.

    Thanks in advance!
