How do I upgrade the ram on my Lenovo legion 5i?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:29 PM PST

So I took my legion 5i apart yesterday just to see the insides as I was planning on upgrading the SSD and ram in the future but the ram slots seem to have a shield over them and I can't see how to remove it.

(ASAP) Possible that HDD with Jumper Pins won't fit into laptop that used to have a HDD without Jumper Pins?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:17 PM PST

Okay so very long story short, I need to know if it's possible that a Hard drive with Jumper pins won't fit into a laptop (HP Elitebook 8440P) that used to have a Hard drive without Jumper pins. I wasn't able to find a single post online talking about this and I need this info asap, so thanks

Future Engineering student in need of laptop advice

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:40 PM PST

    Hi,

I am 18 years old and this spring I will be applying to an engineering program in mechanical engineering and I need to buy a new laptop to work on.

I am currently considering buying either the Zephyrus G14/G15 with a 1660 GPU or waiting for the new 2021 Zephyrus with a stronger GPU and CPU.

Is it worth paying for the stronger computer or is it overkill? I am not looking for a laptop to game on, I just want a mobile workstation with some horsepower.

Is there any other laptop you would recommend me buying instead?

Any help or advice is usefull.

    Thanks in advance!

Western Digital SN750 nvme heatsink removal

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:48 PM PST

I recently bought the WD SN750 nvme for my Lenovo Legion 5...it came with a heatsink and I thought it would fit. Sadly it fits but the heatsink is too tall and its deforming the laptop (noticeable buldge underneath the laptop and on the keypad)

Has anyone tried removing the top part of the heatsink in order to make it shorter? If so, how did you achieve this?

    Laptop suggestions

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST

Hi! I'm looking for a new laptop (at Best Buy) under 1200$ just for general student purposes and was hoping you guys had some suggestions. Also, I would prefer to just pick it up from Best Buy and not have it shipped (:

Would it be retarded to try to use glue to fix this? My insurance company can fix it for 170 dollars but I think I might just use glue instead if it would work. The screen still works but the touch is gone on the right side of the screen. Didn't really use it anyway

Is MacBook Pro 2020 even worth it? Especially for someone who’s not big on technology and uses laptop for basic stuff?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:28 AM PST

I was looking at the recent MacBook Pro's and I just feel like they are not worth the money at all. I'm not sure if I should get the latest one or just a refurbished older one.

I make music and use an audio interface which is usb. So many other things I use have usb. I also sometimes use dvds. I also like to take photos and I use a memory card. I'm no professional or anything.

That means I'll have to spend more money buying adapters or buying new equipment and I just don't see the point at all.

I'm not huge on technology and clearly I don't know much about it, just use it for basic things and just like to record music here and there nothing too serious, I just feel like all the newest apple products don't suit a lot of people. Or maybe I just need to to upgrade everything I own and get with all the new technology? But I enjoy using dvds especially since a lot of the films I have are not on streaming.

Anyone have any advice on what I should buy?

I have a Lenovo Yoga 730-13IKB Laptop (ideapad) and my function keys are not working without having to press the Fn button on top of the function key. I have tried to access BIOS and make sure my Hotkey Mode was disabled and it is. Is there something else I can do to fix this problem? Thank you.

Is next gen AMD and NVIDIA worth the wait

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:02 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I am looking to upgrade my 6th gen Intel laptop but I am on a budget. I can get the Omen 15 with RTX 2060 and Ryzen 4800 but most of my friends are telling me to hold off and wait for next gen to release because the performance increase is substantial

So I'm looking for advice whether it's really worth the wait.

    8GB + 16GB dual channel RAM?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:51 AM PST

So it seems that variations of this question has been asked a lot on the web, but many of them have conflicting answers, and I don't know who to trust.

I recently purchased a new Lenovo Legion 5 and I am looking to upgrade the RAM on it.

From what I can gather, it has two RAM slots: one filled with an 8GB stick of 3200mhz DDR4, and another that is empty. As for the brand/manufacturer of the RAM, I don't know, as the laptop hasn't arrived yet.

Here's my question: If I add a 16GB stick of RAM into the empty slot (same frequency, different brand), will the 8GB stick run in dual channel with the first 8GB on the 16GB stick (8+8 dual channel), leaving the 16GB stick's remaining 8GB to be used in single channel? Or would all of the RAM just run in single channel?

(Side note: I'm fully aware that Lenovo suggests that you should only use 16GB max, but there are posts like this one and this one that seem to suggest that the real limit is 32GB)

    Thanks in advance!

Anyone put a glass screen protector on top of a rough touchpad?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:29 AM PST

I'm ordering a Lenovo Legion 7i, which seems like a perfect laptop that meets all my requirements. The only thing I'm not in love with is the Mylar touchpad. It's the same material that's on my Y740, and I don't like how gritty it feels, and my fingers skip while two-finger scrolling. I LOVE the glass touchpad on MacBook pros, and the Razer Blade 15 has a nice glass touchpad (though there's a lot of other things lacking on that laptop in my opinion).

I'm trying to figure out ways to make the Mylar touchpad smoother, and I was thinking one of two things, 1) Put a glass screen protector on top of the touchpad, or 2) gently sand / polish the touchpad to create a smoother surface.

    Thoughts?

Laptop recommendations for science / med school?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:41 AM PST

Hi y'all, I'm a senior pre-med student looking for a new laptop. I have an HP Spectre x360 now (I love it but the notes app keeps crashing and it's just old in general) and am looking for a larger laptop, preferably touchscreen, that has good space and speed. I also do play some games that require both space and storage. I've been doing my own research but any advice helps- thanks!!

    Asus Tuf Fx504 in 2021?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:25 AM PST

Looking to purchase my first gaming laptop for around 40,000 INR (550 USD). Will Asus Tuf fx504 (Core i5-8300h, 1050ti 4GB ddr5) be powerful enough to run fairly recent AAA titles?

If not, can anybody suggest a powerful laptop in that range?

Thinking of getting a Razer Blade for work and gaming

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:17 AM PST

I'm interested in getting a Razer Blade Stealth or just the normal base model Razer Blade 15 (2020 versions for both), and was wondering if anyone has either of these 2?

Are they sturdy? I'll be bringing the laptop to work with me everyday and would like it to be built well and strong so it doesn't get damaged when I take it around.

If anyone's owned this before or currently, what downsides or negatives have you experienced with these 2 laptops?

Lenovo Legion Y540 or Legion 5i?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:04 AM PST

    Hello from India people!

I'm in the market for a new laptop for mostly CAD work and occasionally, a little bit of gaming.

    I'm considering two options;

    1. Lenovo Legion Y540 with the following specs at Rs. 60,999.00 on Amazon

    Intel i5 9300HF, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD+256GB SSD, 4GB NVIDIA GTX 1650 Graphics Card.

    1. Lenovo Legion 5i at Rs. 71,999.00

    Intel i5 10300H, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD+256GB SSD, 4GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650 Graphics.

They both seem the same to me but there's this price gap of 10,000 Rupees. Which one should I go for? Also how much is the RAM Upgradable to in the both laptops? the Amazon page mention "Upgradable upto 16GB but I've seen videos of people upgrading to 64GB.

How much can I upgrade these laptops to max out their specs afterwords?

If you guys can spare a bit detailed answer I wouldn't mind it as I'm bit of a newbie in this arena and I'm depending on your expertise.

    Thank You!

    Linux on Toughbook?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:35 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm going to purchasing a refurbished Toughbook soon and something I was interested in doing was attempting to install a Linux distro on it. I'm wondering if anyone else here has experience with completing such a task or one similar to it and how beginner-friendly it's capable of being. My experience and knowledge of Linux is basically zilch, ditto for programming. They're both something I'd really like to learn more on, and the Toughbook I'm getting seemed like it'd be a perfect opportunity to do so.
