Recently broke my screen, is it worth fixing or should I sell for parts and get something new? I have read that a screen repair is very costly and it sometimes doesn’t make sense to do.

Thinking of Selling my old PC Specialist Laptop

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST

Thinking of Selling my old PC Specialist Laptop & am curious whether anyone has any thoughts on its value.

    Its a Defiance 2 17"

    Processor: i7 6700HQ

    RAM: 16GB HyperX IMPACT 2400MHz DDR4

    Graphics: GeForce® GTX 970M-6GB DDR5

    SSD: 256GB SAMSUNG EVO SM951 M2

    HDD: 750Gb WD Black WD7500BPKX 7200rpm

    HDD: 500Gb WD Black WD5000LPLX 7200rpm

Machine still runs smoothly & is very quick.

The machine has a few issues that make me concerned I won't get much for it (compared to what I paid) & will make replacing it awkward (I don't plan on spending much more than I get back, so a new machine will have to be a downgrade):

The fan is rather noisy. Battery is near enough depleted now & with these machines, it has to be taken apart to be replaced. A few keys are a bit iffy, but barely noticeable most of the time.

To someone who is happy to take it part, clear out any dust, clean the keys & replace battery, it'd still be an amazing laptop. I just don't have the time or patience to do it.

    Thanks

I'm trying to decide between the XPS 13 or new M1 Macbook air, help me please.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:29 PM PST

Currently trying to decide on a new laptop that will be used for university work, some music production, and maybe a tiny bit of light gaming (nothing intensive). I've whittled my options down to the XPS 13, configured with 16gb RAM, 512GB SSD, and i5 1135g7, for $1229 or the Macbook Air M1 with 16gb ram and 512gb SSD for $1449. The price difference isn't enough to be the decider for me. The extra power of the M1 as well as the battery life has me leaning towards the Macbook, as well as the build quality and screen, but I've used windows all my life, and the XPS is compatible with eGPU's if i wanted to use it for more serious gaming in the future, as well as being slightly cheaper. What do you think?

Can I overclock this laptop (and if yes, is it worth it)?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:30 AM PST

I have been gaming on this cyberpowerpc laptop since 2017 and I am finally starting the process of building a desktop. Given the current state of top tier inventory, this may take some months to acquire the components, SO I am wondering if I can squeeze out some higher performance from my current machine until I finish my build.

Specifically, I am wondering: can overclock anything and if so, would it actually make a difference? Or any other suggestions on getting higher performance in terms of graphic quality and FPS. I play mostly COD (40-50 FPS on low settings) and CP2077 (25-40 FPS on low settings).

Here is what I am working with:

    • CPU: Intel(R) Core™ Processor i7-7700HQ 2.8GHz Turbo 3.8GHz 6MB Cache
      Processor
    • VIDEO: NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5
    • MOTHERBOARD: Intel(R) HM175 Express Chipset
    • MEMORY: 16GB (8GBx2) DDR4/2400MHz SODIMM
    • HDD: 500GB WD Blue SATA-III 6.0Gb/s SSD - 545MB/s Read and 525MB/s
      Write

    Thanks!

    Best laptop under $500

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:40 PM PST

Looking for a new laptop for my dad

He only does web browsing and spreadsheets, so performance isn't a big deal, but he'd like something that would run stable for a long time.

Storage isn't a big deal either, though an SSD would be nice. Anything over 256GB

An IPS panel would great, since the TN panel in his old one is pretty awful.

Battery isn't that important either since he's plugged in all the time.

A good wifi chip would be very nice as well.

    Thank you for any help!

    Two options for PC

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:14 PM PST

I have two options for a laptop that would need to run major FOSS photography software such as GIMP (this would likely be its biggest program). It would be running 12 MP (30MB) files and occasionally 24 MP files. Here are my choices:

Lenovo T410 (my current computer) with -160GB to 250GB ssd for the OS -1TB HDD for saving files -8GB DDR3 soddim RAM

    OR

Lenovo T430 or equivelant with: --160GB to 250GB ssd for the OS -1TB HDD for saving files -16GB DDR3 soddim RAM

There may be other upgrades, but the RAM would be the primary one. Would it be worth it?

How to upgrade internal storage in Lenovo laptop

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:47 AM PST

I have an old Lenovo G580 that I've been working on and wanted to replace the sluggish HDD and start completely fresh with a new SSD. I had already done this successfully with a different laptop, so I tried the same process but it doesn't work for some reason: slotting in the new SSD, followed by plugging in a USB prepared to install windows 10 and turning on the laptop results in the G580 powering up to a blank screen. Does anyone know a way around this?

    When will my laptop ship?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:48 AM PST

I ordered a lenovo ideapad 5 14 AMD laptop with a ryzen 7 4800U recently (end of december) and it said it takes longer than 6 weeks to ship. Yesterday I was looking at another laptop deal elsewhere and someone said something along the lines of "you can expect for laptops like this to ship after 10th of march", and this worried me as I was hoping to get my laptop at the start of february. Now I'm thinking I could end up waiting till march to get my ryzen 4000 series laptop then I heard the 5000 series laptops might launch in like april so it would be a big rip. Does someone know anything about laptop/AMD stock that might explain what this guy meant about "march 10th" and whether i have to worry about my laptop being obsolete by the time I recieve it 😂?

    M1 macbook air

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:36 AM PST

Basically the one I'm looking at is the cheapest model , 256 gb storage 8ram Buying a laptop is kind of a big deal for me and i can't afford to buy the wrong one, through the research I've done I've found that this generation of macs is perfect, the only probablems I've found reviewers talking about is the Bluetooth problem and the read write spead when using external ssds. Is it a safe and good buy?

    £700 laptop recommendations?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:25 AM PST

Looking for a laptop around £700.

For the money (£750 with student discount) the Honor magicbook pro seems unmatched with its spec however I'm not sure how reliable it could be with Honor being a new company.

Any other recommendations for an all around laptop that can handle most productivity for a maths undergraduate?

    Or any magicbook owners opinions?

I won't be gaming however a good display is important for movies etc. and a good processor is preferable. Also would like it to last a few years.
