Laptops for university use (No gaming) - $1300-1700 What I value: A long lasting battery, durable, good keyboard/touchpad/materials and decent performance

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:26 AM PST

I'm going to uni in a couple of months and I need a windows laptop to replace my macbook air. I'd only use it for uni, not gaming. I'd want a long battery life, durable, good keyboard, good touchpad, good materials and mediumish+ performance. Price range ~ $1300-1700?

I loved the keyboard of the macbook, not sure how other companies do their keyboards but something similar I think would be good. But I have no idea, as long as its responsive and doesn't need much pressure (Like the touchpad, I'd prefer not needing to apply that much pressure).

I liked the air's touchpad compared to other HP products I ended up seeing at school. I still clicked for highlighting things, moving things, etc, but being able to simply tap the touchpad instead of clicking provided less pressure for basic clicking I found was great. Not sure if I'll just get used to the alternative; maybe it's not that big of a deal.

I didn't like the material, always cold to touch, so I'm wondering what other possibilities there are.

and I obviously want something that could last me through university (3 years) and maybe for work after that, who knows.

I need a medium ish performance. Nothing that will increase the price too much, but I am majoring in machine learning. I'm told by people that do what I do that I don't need anything crazy, so mid to mid+ performance would be ideal. Thanks!!!

    Study Laptop - 2in1 - 900€ (Italy)

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:14 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget
      900€, buying in Italy
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      2-in-1
      performance
      battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      So so

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will use it to program (attending IT school), take notes at school, use online books and random gaming (like very light one)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Just some Minecraft or Brawhlalla, that's light

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good touchscreen and pen input, since taking notes its really important. Maybe also a good keybord but I can live with a "medium" one.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
First thing: I'll get the student discount of 20%, so consider that when checking price ( any price - 20% = 900€)
Second thing: I've already seen the Lenovo Yoga 7i 14", which looks almost perfect, but I couldn't find any good review here. I need to be sure that the pen side is good and works well.

SSD upgrade in dell inspiron 15 5559

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:16 AM PST

I do not prefer installing OS on the new SSD as I'm using original OS on HDD. I just want to make other programs faster, therefore, is there any way to make my laptop create virtual ram only on the SSD ?

    Monthly vs Buying Outright

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:36 AM PST

What are the advantages / disadvantages to doing this?

Why should one consider a monthly fee over a couple of months rather than buying the laptop outright?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:59 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I am buying a new laptop for me (a student). I need it for ms office, zoom, ms teams, little bit of photoshop and some casual games.

Does anyone have an experience with HP Envy x360 15-dr1019nn? How will it perform in games and in work?
I didn't find a lot of reviews on web for this particular model...

I like the tablet option for taking notes in class or watching movies.

    Thank you

    What should I get?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:41 PM PST

I've had a surface pro 3 for years and the internal storage is just not good enough. How I've managed to last on 64gb I do not know. I've been wanting to run things like reaper which it can run but space is an issue. I'm far behind on the laptop market and am looking for big storage really and something that runs audio interfaces well. Any ideas? Looking to spend about 400 quid (UK).

Latitude 5400 noise and thermal performance

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:13 PM PST

I have a Latitude 5400 with i5-8365U. I think it's running too hot from the moment I got it because the fan seems to be running on high all the time compared to other Latitudes I've had. But I don't know how to tell if it's normal or not for this model?

The fan is very loud most of the time, the processor seems to be in the high 90 degrees C too often, and the distance to TJMax seems to be small while doing just office work (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) where the CPU usage is only moderate.

I'm seeing what I may be a lot of "Package/Ring Power Limit Exceeded" and "Package/Ring Thermal Throttling" when I do logging with HWInfo, but I'm not sure if those are meaningful metrics?

    I've run:

    • HWInfo

    • Dell diagnostics (diagnostics say it's fine)

    • The Dell Power Manager app to try the different fan, noise, temperature and performance settings, but the fan's still running on high most of the time.

    I've:

    • Researched the i5-8365U that's in my laptop to find the thermal specs

    • Researched laptops with that processor in relation to performance and thermals

    • Found what the ProcHot temp is set to on my laptop (100 deg C).

Here's an Imgur album of screenshots of Temps, Distances to TJMax along with Package/Ring Power Limit Exceeded and Package/Ring Thermal Throttling logs, etc.

TL;DR: How do I tell if this laptop is just the way that it for its model is or if it actually is supposed to be running cooler and quieter?

How to wake laptop up from sleep?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:53 PM PST

    Hi,

I have an Acer Predator Helios 300 purchased recently that I use as my main gaming pc. When I'm home, I have it hooked up to an external monitor with my wireless mouse (USB receiver) and wireless keyboard (USB receiver).

When gaming, I have my laptop tucked away with the lid closed, set to do nothing, so I can comfortably game on my much larger monitor.

Before I go to bed, I manually put my computer to sleep. And when I return from work, I want to be able to wake my laptop up from one of my peripherals instead of opening the lid and pressing the power button (which is a key on the keyboard)

I've gone into device manager and enabled the mouse and keyboard to "allow device to wake computer", but the laptop doesn't wake unless I press the power button. I even tried disabling the computer from turning off the USB hubs, but to no avail.

Is there something I'm missing? I know it's a minor inconvenience to have to open the lid and press the button, but I'd like to know if and how I can get my laptop to wake with just a shake of the mouse or a mashing of my keyboard keys.

    Thanks in advance!

Can I use my laptop Asus x455lj and turn it on using a charger without using the battery?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:09 PM PST

I have this laptop since 5 years ago, and whenever i use it, i kept charging it. As my friend told me, my battery laptop will explode or disabled if i keep charging while using it. I'm a heavy user, I always turned on my laptop atleast 24 hours or more than that. I always play games with it more than 6 hours a day. And when I checked my cycle time, it's around 800 charging cycle. Can i atleast try to open up the laptop and pull out the battery and use it like a pc ? Just plug in my charger without worrying my battery's life.

Student in need exchanges good advice with karma and gratitude! Surface laptop 3 i5 or i7 Vs Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:51 AM PST

Hi everyone so here's the deal, after 5 years of service my Lenovo crushed and I want to replace it. My choice got to the Dell XPS 13 9310 and to the Surface Laptop 3 either i7 or i5 but I can't decide.

I chose them because I travelled a lot, and I need something portable, non heavy, but that can EVERYTHING I need in any situation.

At the moment my main use of the laptop consists in very light gaming (dead by daylight very low Res), online lessons and browsing. Yet I plan to use it way more on the future and potentially also with some pretty heavy duties. (In the past I worked on photo editing, with big data softwares etc. and I believe that this will be the case in the future, maybe also with some basic video editing since I would like to learn it's basis). Moreover I am an amateur photographer so I frequently have loads of pictures to sort out and work with on the pc.

That said here are my questions: 1. Microsoft surface laptop or Dell XPS 13? 2. Would the i5 processor of the surface laptop be enough? (It costs way less so its rather tempting particularly because, as I said, the more intense use it is not so frequent) 3. Would you suggest the touch or non-touch screen for the Dell (here, again the difference is of about 100 euros so worth noticing)

Thank in advance and loads of karma to everyone that may help!

I need a new laptop that won’t slow down

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:33 AM PST

So I am currently in college and the laptop I currently own has slowed down significantly where it takes about thirty minutes for it to turn on and load a google tab. It constantly freezes and crashes and I've finally had enough. Now I don't know anything about laptop specs or any terminology about the tech. Ive tried doing some research but most good laptops are in the 1000 price range. My honest price cap is $1000 anything more than that I'm just really struggling to reach. I just want a laptop that is reasonably fast and will stay that way for years to come I really don't want to have to buy a new laptop every three years just because they're so slow. Any advice on which product to get would be greatly appreciated, it is just really over whelming to find an affordable quick laptop.

    Which combination?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST

I will game some stuff on it, but nothing competitive. Mostly stuff like Ride 3, racing games, farming simulator 19, beam.ng drive, euro Truck Simulator 2 I want it to last a few years. Resolution is 1080p, probably will be 21:9, maybe 1440p in the future What combination would you choose?
