Looking to buy a new laptop for heavy school work

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:28 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for when I start at the university. My old laptop's CPU couldn't quite handle the stress and was extremely slow at starting apps and navigating when a lot of stuff was opened at the same time.

My total budget: Around 5000-7000 DKK which is 800-1000 USD (my guess is that they cost that much, I'm open for a different budget.)

How would you prioritize form factor?

-Ultrabooks: I would prefer an ultrabook. I have no need for a graphics card.

-Performance: The CPU has to be nice. Been looking at an AMD Ryzen 5 4600 and would generally say it looks to be good, but I'm no expert at all. Feel free to direct me on CPU as that would help me greatly. I need SSD. That is a must, but I doubt they make dedicated harddrive ultrabooks. Battery life is also very important! But so is the screen resolution, and I believe (not sure) that they contradict each other. I would prefer >1080p but 1080p is fine.

-Weight and thinnes: Doesn't matter too much

-Screensize: I don't fully know. My guess is around 13" - 14" but doesn't matter too much

-Video/photo editing + gaming: I'm not editing on it and gaming is no worry either. Doesn't need a dedicated graphics card. I ocassionally play Sims but I think a cpu can cover that.

-Other requirements: I would like if the keyboard and maybe mouse pad had had focus in the making of the design. No big deal, but since I will be writing on it a lot it might need an above average keyboard.

-Last note: I have been looking at the "ACER SWIFT 3 SF314" don't know if it fits my needs but it was my initial thought

    A Cyber Protected Laptop

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:07 PM PST

I want a laptop that I know is going to be great with cyber security, but can also run games such as Call of Duty: Cold War. I tried looking some up, but I don't get a straight answer. I'm completely new to laptops/computers so I have no idea what I'm looking for.

    thermal throttling question

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:44 PM PST

i have a new cpu and have rencountered thermal throttling a lot, I'm planning n getting a ssd soon because my current hard drive seems really slow and is constantly at 60% while idling and easy 90-100% while doing anything. I'm wondering if a new ssd/faster hard drive would help with thermal throttling or if that's just not how it works, thanks

Looking for a new laptop to be able to adequately play ‘basic’ games and other everyday use.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:32 PM PST

I mainly play quite popular games that are targeted at any pc/laptop setup (got into RS3 and played LoL for years).

My current laptop, an old HP Pavilion (I think), it's about 7 years old now and unless I play one minimum settings, I cannot play. Even on minimum settings, it lags and has fps issues.

I'm wondering if these FPS issues are graphics card related or processor related and whether AMD Ryzen 5 (and intel cores equivalent) would be adequate for my needs?

I'm looking at about £400-600 to spend and I could have my arm twisted with spending a bit more up to like £650 but I'd rather not unless it's a great deal.

I've looked at a new laptop for years and never have because I couldn't justify it but I feel like it can't go any longer, the screen goes pixelated if it isn't at a certain angle, it freezes constantly etc even when just using google!

    Tia for any help

How does one go about getting this repaired? Is it too far gone? Do I need a new laptop entirely? Be honest, please.

    Legion 5Pi Refund

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:12 PM PST

Hi all, I recently purchased legion 5Pi (i7-10750H, GTX 1660Ti, 60Hz 1080p). I paid around 1300€ and now I am wondering if it'd be better to wait a bit longer for the 3060 new AMD laptops? The laptop is ordered on Lenovo.com and it's currently in production.

I bought the Legion 5Pi since it was the only model left with 1660ti as the amd model had a 1650ti.

Any advice on what to do? I am looking for something which is as future proof as possible and was wondering if it's worth the upgrade to just refund and wait.

Thanks and have a nice day

    Laptop value?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:56 AM PST

I'm looking for a rough estimate of what my laptop is worth. I'm looking to sell it as I got a new one.

    It is a Lenovo 330S (2018)

    8th Gen i5-8250u (1.6 quad)

12 GB Ram (upgraded from original 8 GB)

512 SSD (replaced the original 1 GB HDD)

    Integrated graphics

Everything works and it's in good condition. I basically only used it for grad school.

    Thanks in advance

Help me with buying a new laptop charger/can't find charger

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:44 AM PST

    Hey.

My 2017 laptop charger broke. The company discontinued it. I live in Greece and I have searcher and no one else sells the exact type. Here is what it says on the charger:

ADAPTER, Model:EE1230-105,Input:100-240V~ 50/60Hz 500mA,Output:12V=3000mA (its not exactly = but I can't find the symbol for it, it's similar) My laptop says "DC 12V" on the opening

I have found two that may be alright but there are not called chargers/laptop related. Can I use them as one? And which one?

    1) Led AC/DC adaptor, Input:90V - 264V AC, Output:12V DC0(and other stuff idk how to translate) it says its compatable with Led modules etc 2)Switching Power Adaptor, 100~240V AC input, 12V DC Output, 3A ks1230

Thank you a lot! Sorry for broken ensligh. Ps if there is a better reddit to post this please tell Me. I really need to use my laptop for lessons and I can use any help..
