    Is Intel Optane worth it?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:36 AM PST

I'm a PhD student and want a fast computer to run multiple programs (nothing super high-intensity though). So having Microsoft office, email and some other programs like mendeley and R running. I use a second monitor also. I want a laptop that runs smoothly but I'm not a gamer so high memory apps aren't an issue.

    I basically want a:

Intel i5 processor (or AMD 5 - not fussy)

8GB RAM (ideally more but 16GB RAM costs too much)

    512 SSD drive

I have found laptops that fit this range but one laptop I have found also has a 32GB intel Optane as well as these specs above. This laptop has a slightly smaller screen and costs slightly more.

I have read conflicting reviews on the internet about Optane and I can't tell if it is worth it, if the laptop already has a large SSD drive? Some seem to say not..

With my requirements for a laptop, do you think I should bother with Intel Optane?

    Thanks!

    HP Spectre x360 gaming?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:31 AM PST

Does anyone have experience with the HP Spectre x360 with light gaming? Looking at a model with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD + 32GB Optane. Looking to run basic games, Plants vs Zombies and The Sims or something equivalent. Not sure how the Intel Iris+ graphics would work with the i7-1065G7 processor, I don't have much experience in the laptop world.

    Thanks!

My headphone jack doesn't work with my ear buds but it works with my speakers and i want to know if it's hardware or software problems.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:25 PM PST

2 days ago, my laptop had the earphone plug halfway in it, then when i knocked it the sound quality sounded like rubbish like the earbuds were plugged halfway in.. So i went to get it repaired the same day and yesterday i get it back. I try it with my speakers, the plug has 2 rings, it works fine. But when i plug in 3 different types of ear buds with 3 rings on the plug they all have the same half plugged in sound. i want to know if it's something to do with the actual hardware or if it's just something to do with drivers. (Sorry if it's the wrong flair i don't know what one to put this post in)

In need of any laptop that can run RuneScape at 50 FPS

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:18 PM PST

This is a long shot and I'm probably gonna sound like a bum but I need a laptop that can run Runscape smoothly.. I have like 3 laptops from before 2009 that are infested with malware and viruses that I can never get to work. So I was hoping if anyone had a decent laptop laying around that I could buy for little to nothing for.

Why are Microsoft Surface products so unreliable

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

Seriously, I absolutely love Surface products. But for me, as Im sure with anyone else, reliability is a crucial factor. It is not a secret that Surface's reliability is not the best, and quite far below average.

I am not an Apple person but credit where credit is due, they are indeed reliable.

I guess my question is, why are Surface products less reliable than the others? Paying for a premium product should mean buyers don't have to worry about reliability.

    Recommend me a Laptop??

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:45 AM PST

Hi all, looking for a new laptop and hoping to get some input and recommendations, as I normally buy the cheapest version of a laptop I can, and then upgrade myself... i am currently running two laptops that fit all the below specs but I keep having to swap depending on the tasks, and I want to refine this.

What I am looking for is a laptop with a decent screen doesn't need to be 4k or retina but would be nice...

    Needs a decent graphics card.

must be able to upgrade to at least 32gb DDR4 RAM...

and must have M.2 AND SSD slot...

backlit keyboard preferred and at least 1 thunderbolt port.

everything else is pretty up in the air, I am open to different brands, screen sizes, price points, number of ports, etc etc...

FIRE AWAY LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GOT I have no brand loyalty and as I said, this needs to be the upper spec of the laptop I would prefer to buy cheap under spec, and upgrade it to fit this spec or higher :)

Is 4K worth it...which should I go with?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:36 AM PST

I'm having trouble deciding between these two 15'' laptops...what do you all think?

    A) HP Envy x360 with 1080P 400 nits touch-screen

    Or

    B) HP Spectre x360 with 4k 340 nits touch-screen

All other specs (processor, ram, drive, os, etc.) are identical between the models. Price difference is about $250. Is moving from the Envy line to the Spectre line and moving from 1080 to 4k worth $250?

    Third party charging Asus Zenbook

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:33 AM PST

Hello people, I've bought a laptop today, an Asus Zenbook 14 UM431 and I was wondering about an in car charger for this thing running off of the lighter port... Now, given my countries limited number of such specific peripherals, I've found a few third party chargers that plug into the car lighter socket, some have their own power brick, and some of them even have switches for the volts but they're all minimum twice the power output of my wall charger which is 45 watts... the last thing i want is burn down my laptop, mess up the charging port or just ruin the battery while its plugging into that third party car charger.

heres the link of one of the chargers

Opinions on good laptops for programming and software development

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:23 AM PST

My first semester on university is about to end and I came to the conclusion that I need a new and more powerful laptop.

Asking what laptops you guys think would be the best options since I'm probably going to buy one soon.

The main task I'll be doing there is programming, I have my own desktop with good specs at home, but I need something to when I'm off to uni.

Budget around 1000€, but it doesn't have to be exactly this.

    Thanks for the suggestions!
