Laptop for therapist up to ~$1000 USD Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:16 PM PST Hi y'all! I'm opening my own therapy private practice and need to upgrade my 5yo cheap laptop. This will be for both work and personal, so I'd like it to be able to handle video telehealth appointments and some occasional gaming.

Looking for a new gaming laptop 700-1200$ Posted: 10 Jan 2021 02:14 AM PST What I have currently:Acer Predator G5-793i7 6700HQ @ 2.6ghz17" 75hz displaygtx 1060 6gb256 NVMe SSD with 2TB Hybrid SSHD The monitor on this thing only does 75hz. The speakers are busted due to some weird feedback, I tried replacing them, but I still got noise so I figure it's a feedback issue. Some keys have been ripped off over the years, and I've replaced them (replacing them with whatever keys I had to spare when I bought the entire keyboard and replaced it, so I have 2 of many letters on my qwerty arrangement, this doesnt bother me but it trips up a lot of friends I have over). The machine runs really hot (99c highs, with an average of 94-98c on 50% load of all cores, according to CoreTemp), so it looks like it's throttling due to heat I guess. I imagine it will melt soon, as I've gamed on laptops previously and they seem to just whither away over time as I use them down here in the south. I'm keeping the air intakes as clear as I can, honest! That being said, the little dude has been a real trooper and still plays most games today on medium to high settings relatively smoothly. What I am looking for: 120 - 144hz 15.6 or smallerRTX 2060i7 9300 or AMD equivalentExtra NVMe Slot for SSD and SATA connection if no HDD or SSHD.A nice keyboard or touchpad with a sturdy chassis that has at least SOME metaldecent laptop speakers that dont sound tinny, not expecting prominent bass or anythingTouchscreen, Thunderbolt 3, or Biometric reader would be a nice bonus, but of course not expected I really enjoy new tech (I wear a pebble watch, and used to own a yotaphone e-paper display phone before it broke), so anything out of the ordinary or gimmicky might also draw me in, if the pricepoint is right. I'm planning to use the old laptop as a remote gaming or guest gaming laptop, and plex server at my home, and taking the new one with me at work. Most of the games I play are pretty retro, indie roguelikes like Hades, Dead Cells, Synthetik, Risk of Rain 1 and 2, etc. I also enjoy emulation. But I will be playing Tekken and on occasion something triple A. I also own 2 oculus quests, so being VR capable for Oculus Linking is not necessary but really appreciated. Of course I'd like something that didn't run so hot as well (cause I'm afraid of it dying over time). I was looking at Legion 5, Acer Nitro 5, Rog Strix, MSI GF63 Thin or GL65 Leopard, Asus Zephyrus, even the budget Gateway laptop being sold at Walmart. This is a lot of money for me. Not sure if I should wait for things to get a bit cheaper first or what. I'd like to get something and use it at least for the next 5 years or so until I can retire it as something that's just always connected to one of my televisions. Please let me know what you think. Long Lifespan Laptop for Grad Mechanical Engineering Student (& Side Gaming) Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:19 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
1,000 USD
No.
My priorities are long lifespan > high CPU power > GPU power in that order.
None. In fact, I love chunky laptops.
15'' or larger
AutoCAD, CATIA, MATLAB, HyperWorks, ANSYS, FreeCAD, SolidWORKS, basic Photoshop. Basically math solving, simulation, and 3D modelling.
The most graphically demanding games in my library are Just Cause 3 and Fallout New Vegas (not exactly demanding today).
Reliable build quality, good hinges, good screen, and good keyboard
I found several gaming laptops at this price (with an RTX 2060), but their problem is that they don't last. I wish to run a laptop for at least 5 years with no issues (which is a thing I found some of my colleagues able to do while I wasn't able to do so). I am ready to give up on graphical power for the sake of a long lifespan. I also do not wish to feel a downgrade from my current system which is: CPU: i7 8750H Some of the laptops that caught my eye were ASUS TUF A15 (which has thermal issues and a bad screen), HP Omen 15 (screen wobble, mushy keyboard, HP being infamous of power failures, and a speculated 3 year lifespan), Lenovo Legion Y540 (don't know about this one), and Lenovo Legion 5 (don't know about this one either). Looking for a ~600$ laptop for school and light gaming Posted: 09 Jan 2021 08:52 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Preferably ~600 USD. Are you open to refurbs/used? No, not really. I don't mind used parts in general but I don't trust used laptops. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? For form factor, I don't really care, as long as it looks normal and not gamer-ey. I want decent build quality and battery life though. How important is weight and thinness to you? Prefer lighter, this will be my school laptop Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Looking to play some e-sports titles like League and CS:GO. I'll be running Geforce Now to do AAA gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to run CS at over 100 FPS, I don't care about settings and resolution as long it's not dogshit bad. League runs on everything so I'm not super worried. In other titles I'm fine compromising on settings and resolution, especially because I'll be using Geforce Now as needed. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No, I'll be using a mouse but I prefer a decent laptop keyboard Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Nah guys, recommend away. Is 1650ti worth $55 more than 1650? Posted: 10 Jan 2021 03:15 AM PST Two laptops from same company with almost same config. They both have Ryzen 5 4600h. But the one with 1650ti have 512 GB SSD, while the 1650 have 1 TB HDD and 256 GB SSD. Is it worth the $60 to buy the laptop with the 1650ti? [link] [comments] |

Budget laptop for SketchUp / Bluebeam workstation Posted: 09 Jan 2021 11:13 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Preferably <500 USD. Are you open to refurbs/used? Used is fine but I have limited knowledge of current CPUs and their upgradeability or performance limitations How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, build quality, battery, form. In that order. How important is weight and thinness to you? Desktop replacement. Non issue Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17" is preferred but compromise is understandable within budget (15-16") Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Priority to heavy use of Bluebeam for large files / PDF. SketchUp. Browser use with multiple active tabs (6 average). Torrent client No gaming per se. Casual video / youtube (I couldn't tell you the difference between 720p and whatever "*k" they are selling now. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent keyboard is of course great. 10 key is a must. Optical drive is ok but not a deal breaker. I will almost always use an external mouse. I have no use for a touch screen. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Upgradeability it a plus. I have in the past swapped CPUs, ram, hard drives and other components in laptops. However I am 10 years out of anything remotely "current". I have mechanical aptitude but I am no longer able to keep up with the technical details. I don't mind low end entry specs that I can upgrade after purchase (ram, SSD etc.) I need a laptop to serve as a desktop replacement, space in my work area is my main concern over portability and long battery life. Going to learn coding. I bought a raspberry pi 4+ and wanted to get a comfortable decent laptop. Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST I have a budget of $400 but I can push it to $500 if absolutely worth it. If it matters I'll be learning network security, pentesting, and Linux over the next year before I upgrade to the +$1,000 range. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for advanced poker software and business/personal uses, up to $3000 USD Posted: 09 Jan 2021 11:33 AM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2000 to $3000 range, upwards of $3000 is totally cool. Looking to use up this budget on an amazing device. Are you open to refurbs/used? No, I'm looking to get a new laptop. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? The most important thing is to be able to solidly run intensive software ("solvers" like this: https://www.gtoplus.com/download/) that tends to work the computer to the bone and run it very hot. So a good processor, lots of RAM, and definitely great cooling (I'm worried about this part) are key. How important is weight and thinness to you? I prefer a sleek, thin, computer, but if it's not reasonable given my above wishes that's understandable. My last laptop was a Dell XPS and I loved it, but it couldn't cut it with the software I mentioned. The RAM was insufficient, but I think the cooling was the bigger issue. I'm interested in the new Dell XPS 15 but the cooling seems questionable. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer a bit of a bigger size, but relatively indifferent. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Running intensive games is not needed, but it would be nice to run mild Steam games. Again, my most important desire is to run poker solvers that are very intensive. Please check the link above for details and system requirements (it won't make you download anything). I would like to run a variety of other software as well, but probably nothing else too crazy (maybe some trading software etc.). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming isn't a big concern, but being able to run mildly intensive games at 60FPS with decent settings would be nice. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely looking for a good keyboard. Touch screen is cool. None of these things particularly pop out to me but since I have a large budget and I'd like this to be a great computer that will last me years it'd be great to pull out the bells and whistles. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. To recap, my main concern is being able to run intensive poker software such as "Piosolver" and "GTO+." These programs are very hard on the computer and require a good processor, lots of ram (32 to 64gb honestly), and great cooling. Running one model can take a couple hours of intensive computer functioning. I loved my old sleek Dell XPS but it was a bit too weak and low on RAM to do everything I wanted with that software, and I think the subpar cooling actually led to it being damaged by how hot the solver made the computer run (it's currently inoperational). I'd love a similar laptop like the new XPS, but the cooling is a huge concern to me. If it's relevant, I also plan to cart this laptop a lot and will probably be in Japan often in the coming years. Sorry for the long writeup, I appreciate all the help guys, this purchase is important for me. Happy new year. [link] [comments] |
Slim Sleek gaming laptop under $1500 Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:56 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1500 Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? The laptop should be portable so around 3.5 lb, 13-15 inch screen. I don't want the laptop to have a gamer feel like flashy keyboard and all that stuff. If it does have a flashy keyboard then the colors gotta be adjustable so I can make them white when in class. I'm spending so much on it so the laptop gotta be durable How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inch screen Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lots of Programming and Gaming along with decent amount of photoshop/Lightroom/Sony Vegas If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly games like Valorant, Overwatch, Rising Storm 2 Vietnam, Watch Dogs 2, Rocket League, COD. Want to run the games above 90 frames at medium to high settings Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Usb C Thunderbolt port, Good keyboard (one with high key travel would be appreciated but not required. Ex: Thinkpad series), finger print reader/face reg windows hello would be appreciated (not required but would rlly want it), I will be using a USB C docking station which is going to give me all the ports I need so USB C thunderbolt is must. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently looking at the Razer Stealth 15 but I lowkey don't wanna spend $1500 so the cheaper the laptop the better. [link] [comments] |

I started a job, that will require me to travel once the lock-downs end. The laptop would be used mostly for mostly internet browsing, maybe netflix. I need it to be small and portable, and preferably powerful enough to handle SOME photo editing just in case. I'm looking for a laptop that has the best quality/money ratio. I'm a bit ignorant on this topic, I don't know what's the usual lifespan of a laptop and how high/low my expectations need to be, so I trust your recommendations. [link] [comments] |
Prospective Grad School Student Laptop Posted: 09 Jan 2021 05:32 AM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 0-500$ USD Are you open to refurbs/used? Refurbished yes if certified How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance is what I need: I do need web cam and mic, run zoom smoothly, something if I have 5 or more tabs open it won't bog down tremendously, battery life is good, I use the cloud a lot so hard drive space isn't a huge factor. How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 2200 $ CAD Canada Are you open to refurbs/used? Not Preferred. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > Touchscreen > Durability > 120hz > 1440p >Battery Life How important is weight and thinness to you? This isn't my tablet so go big or go home right? better cooling that way. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15'' or larger Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lighting software, Visualizers etc. Moderate Gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Ark survival evolved is my main game ideally it'd hit 60 given it doesn't take much, just getting into sim racing that id want to hit like 120-140 especially if I get a 120hz monitor with this. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen, Durable, Backlit keyboard (doesn't need individual but would be nice.) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Touchscreen high refresh I've only seen in one of the most expensive razor blade laptops. having a touch screen isn't a deal breaker or extra 1000$ investment(Zephyrus duo <3) when I could use this display for the visualizer and use an external for touch needs. The second thing is I'd like it to last, I work in film and live concerts so dusty environments are quite common, ideally this would last me a few years. Goal is to get a laptop to travel and work with, build a desktop for home gaming sessions and heavy workloads. Been using a I5-9050k + gtx 970 desktop and a ASUS t100 2 in 1 and both cant keep up at all. the 2 in 1 can run basic show lighting but no form of gaming or visuals, the desktop can do light visualizers and mid gaming. Given that desktop would be within next year, I could probably get away with a 1080 laptop rather then going 20 series. ideally I'd go 30 series or 6000 series on the desktop if they ever come available. TL:DR mid-tier desktop replacement with touchscreen for work and travel. [link] [comments] |

Looking for cheaper laptop for basic use + League of Legends Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:59 PM PST Hey all, just found this subreddit while looking for laptops online. My gf's old Mac has recently quit on her, and she's looking for a replacement. She doesn't really do a whole lot on it, just the regular scrolling and watching videos, but she really wants to be able to play league of legends on it. It doesn't need to run max graphic settings or anything, she just wants the basic graphics without any stutters or anything, and is really hoping to get it for under $400 USD. Thanks in advance for all your help! LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Is really looking to keep it under $400 USD.
As long as it's coming from somewhere reputable, want to make sure it'll actually be what she's paying for.
Honestly, neither of us really know much about hardware. Mostly just looking for basic tasks, and able to run league.
Would prefer for it to be transportable, so not to heavy or big, but open to anything.
N/A
League of Legends
Again, just LoL, would like to run at regular graphic settings just without any skips or anything
Would mostly prefer just a reliable and responsive keyboard, less worried about the track pad as she will just plug in a mouse. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for engineering college student Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:56 PM PST So I'm thinking about getting a laptop as a replacement for my recently dead-ish desktop until I can get more parts to repair it.
Under $800 USD, but I can try to go a little bit above but definitely under $1000 USD. However, I'm not currently in the U.S right now so international shipping is a must.
No
Form factor doesn't matter as much, neither does build quality (though a good keyboard is preferred). Performance is a must. Battery life is also pretty important.
I don't think it matterw to me.
15.6 inch
Autocad, Autodesk.
Games like RDR2. Preferrably high settings and at least 60fps
A keyboard and trackpad that doesn't suck. Everything else is something I'm not too worried about
I was thinking about the HP Omen with the 2070 super but I would like to see other options before resorting to the most expensive one. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:44 PM PST Under $1k USD I will use this thing to browse the web and watch anime... lots of it. A nice high res glossy16:9 screen is a must! It should also be relatively thin and well-built. I was thinking the m1 MacBook Air but the education pricing is $899 which is steep and it also has a 16:10 screen and MacOS which I'm not familiar with. Any recommendations? College Student looking to replace 2013 Macbook Pro Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST Hello, I am currently in college and desperately need to replace my 2013 MacBook Pro, it's only 4GB memory and starting to perform slowly even with just the simplest task like having multiple tabs running at one time. For my new computer, I want something that can last for a while and can support software's such as SAS or even photoshop. My question is, should I still stick with an Apple laptop? I have had one forever and they really are so nice since all my other devices are Apple but for what I need, would it be more cost-efficient and smarter to go with another brand? My budget is: $800-$1300 max. Thank you!! [link] [comments] |

Do you have a preferred screen size? 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would be strictly for gaming. Ideally would like to run Forza Horizon 4, NFS Heat, and The Crew 2. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Is the HP Omen Valkyroe a good work/gaming laptop? Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:42 PM PST The time had come to get a new laptop but my old one was a HP and it was a gift and I just used it for work, I don't know much about specs and ram and rom and when people start talking to me about ram and gb my eyes kind of glaze over, I just don't understand what they are saying. I'm basically looking for a laptop that I can do both gaming and work on, so i need it to have Microsoft Office, and be able to download some work apps. Anyway, this laptop looks amazing but I want to know are there any downsides to it, or reasons to not get it? I can afford it so the price doesn't factor into it, I'm talking about speed, battery life, etc Is there a better mid range gaming work laptop on the market? [link] [comments] |
