Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:35 AM PST I currently have a computer at work, a computer at home and a laptop (XPS 13). I am looking to replace all 3 of these with a single laptop and then use docking stations. Core requirements:
I plan to connect monitors, ethernet, usb devices etc. with a single usb-c cable via a dock - it seems that Thunderbolt 4 is a good idea. My question is whether I should pick a consumer model like ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 or if I am going to stretch this sort of laptop and I am better for either a Workstation or Gaming model with better graphics cards. I wonder whether the new Xe graphics is just going to "work" better with docking stations / Thunderbolt 4 though. Budget not primary concern particularly given RAM/SD drive requirements expect $3k+. [USA] [$800] Help me find the right 2 in 1 Posted: 20 Jan 2021 09:36 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $600-$1000 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Form Factor > Performance > Build quality > Battery Life How important is weight and thinness to you? Something light weight would be ideal. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" and larger is preferred. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light Photoshop work, some music production with Ableton, possibly some very light video editing as well in Sony Vegas Pro. I'm more concerned about being able to use Photoshop and Ableton than I am about the video editing. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not really planning on using this for gaming, but I am curious if a 2 in 1 would be able to run a GBA emulator. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Fingerprint readers and a reliable build quality. Planning on using for at least a couple years. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mostly planning on using this for school and taking notes. I've been looking at an HP x360 Envy or a Lenovo Yoga. What do you recommend? Would it be okay to go with a midrange cpu such as i5 or should I opt for an i7 or equivalent AMD cpu? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

I'll need a laptop to make my life a lot easier. I'd probably carry the laptop to school as well as on longer coaching trips as I have to make a report after all competitions and practice camps and whatnot. Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:15 AM PST Hey guys, So recently my old MacBook pro 13 2012 model motherboard got wrecked.. So I'm planning to upgrade. I'm a photographer and I need really good color reproducing monitors ( not the so expensive ones but good and Decent ones) , and I've been using Mac for several years now so something related to Mac will be a good to go thing for me.. So shall I buy the m1 2020 Mac 13inch or shall I wait for upcoming macbook pro 14 or 16 inch laptop or shall I buy a good color reproducing monitor and Mac mini ( if monitor and Mac mini then is there any specific requirements for both to work properly 🤔 like compatibility types ) IL use photoshop and lightroom and IL learn video editing in the future (fcp) and IL do tethered shoots in future I'm Open to new suggestions too Hope I'm clear with my questions, thanks for the read :) [link] [comments] |

Desktop Replacement for University and Video Editing Posted: 20 Jan 2021 11:19 PM PST Hey guys. I am going to university very soon, and started looking for a laptop to replace my desktop for when I move. I would be using it for university notes, and I'm getting into video editing. I don't mind the screen being large because I'll be using it a lot at home as well with no external monitor. I came across the Dell XPS 17 9700 which seemed good, but then I heard about all the QA/QC issues, etc. and decided against it. Then I looked at the Macbook Pro 16, but there were 2 issues: I prefer Windows to MacOS, and if I would get a Mac I'd rather wait until the M1X chip MBP16 is released. Anyway, I'll fill out the form below. Thank you so much for any help.
$4500 AUD
Preferably not.
As long as it is a laptop I can take to class and use at home, I don't mind.
Fairly important, have to take it to lectures, etc.
15-17inch.
Yes, I want to do video editing, and possibly light gaming (but gaming is not a priority at all).
N/A
I would like a good battery, 2K/4K display. Design/aesthetic is also important. Ideally 512+ GB SSD, and not sure about CPU and GPU but i7 10th Gen equivalent or better would definitely be enough.
Thanks so much for your help! [link] [comments] |
Any ideas regarding when the RTX 3000 laptops are expected to arrive in India? Posted: 20 Jan 2021 11:10 PM PST This is sort of an unusual question, so I hope this complies with the rules of this sub. The title says it all, pretty much. I'm interested in buying one of the new RTX 3000 + Ryzen 5000 laptops unveiled at CES 2021 last week. Some models like the Asus TUF F15 Dash have already begun shipping in the EU. Others like the Legion 5 Pro (which is the one I have my eyes on) are expected to launch around March in the American and European markets. The problem is that right now I'm getting good deals on a couple of RTX 2060 and GTX 1660ti laptops, and I'm not sure whether I should wait for the new line of laptops to come in or cash in right away (the sale I'm talking about ends on Jan 23). I'd prefer to wait for the new laptops provided they come to India within a reasonable time frame (around mid-June is the maximum I'm willing to hold off). Could anyone please tell me when will these models make their way to India (or if they'll make their way to India), going by previous trends/experience or otherwise? Thanks a ton in advance! a well crafted, long lasting laptop: Lenovo carbon x1 (gen8) vs Dell xps 15 Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:47 AM PST i have been spoiled by lenovo carbon x1 4th gen that i am using for about 5 years now. the chassis execution is so good and sturdy, the interors also great and, even though i have smashed it on the ground a million times, splashed some water on it, i have never ever had any issue with it, except for an old battery that would only last 2 hours after years of usage and had to be replaced already. it works great, but the specs are getting a bit outdated and i would buy a new notebook that is crafted so well. i was automatically thinking that i would just buy the newest carbon x1 gen 8, but now i'm looking that dell has this pretty good looking xps15 model with even better specs (although understandably lower battery time) and is also advertising a well crafted carbon fibered chassis. does anybody have any experience with the mentioned notebooks? or can anyone recommend another brand that are well crafted models with good performance that should last 5+ years and are crash/splash resistant? £400 budget laptop for Sims 3&4 and office work - help me find a laptop for a fussy girlfriend Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:45 AM PST Hi, I'm buying my partner a laptop after making a fair bit of money in stocks. I have a budget of £400. She will use this laptop primarily for Sims 3/4, Microsoft word and excel, keeping a diary, doing online homework and browsing the internet - although the internet one probably more so on her phone.
Hard to say as I'm buying for someone else, but build quality is important as my partner uses her laptop for work and just about everything - and travels to work with it. She'd struggle with maintenance and replacing damaged parts if they were to go wrong. I don't want to buy her a money pit, just something that will make her life easier!
I'd appreciate if it was reliable, and simple, although she probably would appreciate the ease of a finger print scanner or something - generally she'd be super happy and content with a laptop that just runs her programs fast.
I apologise for the conflicting information, (as technically you're trying to suggest a laptop on her tastes and mine!). In summary I want to get her the best possible laptop for under £400 that will run Sims 3/4 at 60fps, and be great in ergonomics for office work use and online schooling. She just wants something that looks pretty. So I'd like to find a healthy compromise! Thank yoooou [link] [comments] |

Discreet 2 in 1 Laptop- Morocco (800$-1000$) Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:34 AM PST -Looking for a discreet 2 in 1 for around 8000DH to 10000DH -Open to used or refurb but must be clean/not heavily abused. -Mainly looking for a discrt 2 in 1 with decent battery life and a "17 screen with high refresh. -weight and thinness are irrelevant -Will be used to code/program/write, and gaming on the side (Cyberpunk,OW, etc...) -If possible i want it to have expandable memory and RAM with 1660 GPU equivalent or above. -I am torn between 8GB expandable ram or 16GB ram from the get go. Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:27 AM PST I've never used a Mac before, but I've grown increasingly frustrated with Windows laptops. I currently have a Lenovo Yoga X1 3rd Gen with no dedicated graphics card. I like to have a convertible laptop with touchscreen and active pen, and I enjoy reading and watching movies in tablet mode and scrolling the screen with my finger even while in laptop mode, but...
So in regards to an M1 Macbook: LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1500 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Lightness and compactness. How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightness - very. Thinness - don't care. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 13"-14". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Lightroom, Premium, Resolve, Solidworks, and note-taking apps like OneNote, and any modern games available. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? With modern games, I'd be happy with at least 30-40fps with the lowest settings available. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I really want to have a touchscreen.... but that's not possible with Macs. I often write notes and need to draw diagrams. So do I also need to buy an iPad? If I do this I'm afraid my work will be strewn across multiple different devices that don't all have the same capability. With the Lenovo Yoga I at least have everything on one machine - notes, photo editing, video editing, programming. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would a Macbook and iPad combo be the best? Is it possible to have both devices have a combined weight of ~4lb with a volume similar to one Lenovo Yoga? Will I experience a lot of problems with my stuff divided between two different devices with different operating systems? When programming on a Mac... are the exact same Linux command line commands able to be used? All the documentation for things like configuring packages assumes you're in a Linux environment. Is following the same directions and commands exactly the same under a Mac environment? [link] [comments] |

Suggestions for a Gaming Laptop. Really Good Heat Management, Okay Battery, Good Screen 144hz Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:55 AM PST I want a gaming laptop. The absolutely top priority is heat management. It has to be cool when I play games. I don't really play that demanding games but it has to stay cool on the wasd keys and where I have my left hand. It also has to be very cool on the underside of the computer so that I can have it on my lap and watch movies and stuff on low settings. It has to have a 144hz screen and it has to be okay accurate so I can watch fotball and stuff on it. And the last thing it got to have is Ethernet connection. I can pay from 1197 USD to about 1796 USD. Althouth I come from Sweden. [link] [comments] |
