Neighbors hacking into our home router???

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 12:16 PM PST

I'm not sure if I am posting this on the right subreddit but I need help.

Yesterday me and my family found out that one of our neighbors has made a private network somehow in our gateway and have been using up our internet! We never noticed because they made their own passkey and made the connection hidden, but we noticed how our bill was going up for no reason. We immediately called our provider (xfinity) and they reset everything including our IP address. We made a new name, password, etc and I also changed the password to access the gateway on the browser. That same night everything was fine until our router seemed to reset again out of no where?? It was like they were trying to get in again but this time we couldn't even access our own router since it was reset every couple seconds.

We don't know what to do at this point other than to call again but it seems like these theives have their own way in. Anyone have any solutions? Right now we have left our modem/router unplugged since we don't know what to do.

Router seemingly loses internet connectivity periodically

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:30 AM PST

In the last week, I have started to see an unusual amount of connectivity problems with accessing the internet. I first noticed it earlier this week when I kept getting disconnected from my work VPN every hour or so. I thought it was VPN specific but no one else at the company has this issue and I have confirmed it happened even after rebooting and not using the VPN. I thought it was maybe just my PC which is wired into the router but I have noticed that in some cases my phone and other wireless devices are affected.

The outages can be as brief as a few seconds or 5 minutes. If I restart the router it always seems to resolve for a day at most. I feel like I have eliminated specific devices as the issue and it must either be my router itself or my ISP. I am not sure how to narrow it down further. any advice on what to look at next?

My Router is an ASUS RT-AC88U and have been using it for about 3 years with no issue. My ISP has not had a history of unstable internet connectivity so I kind of doubt its related to them.

    Thanks.

Is an access point a good solution when you live in a large home?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 05:19 PM PST

I have a friend that lives in a very large house, he isn't able to use Ethernet and his wifi router is on the opposite end of his home.

I've heard access points are a good solution to this. But i'm not very informed on the subject. I know Ethernet is encouraged above anything else but he isn't able to unfortunately.

I'd appreciate any advice on the subject and if you guys have any good recommendations for good access points it would be very much appreciate

    Cheers!

OpenWRT vpn blocking access to my server from local network

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 04:43 AM PST

    This is my setup:

OpenWRT router running openvpn to bypass geoblocking on streaming sites, but since i dont want all my computers over the vpn. I have used VPN Policy Based routing to route subnet 10.0.0.1/24 straight to WAN. Meaning 10.0.1.0/24 will go through the VPN. Currently only my TV is setup through this subnet.

I am also running a game server for me and my friends (which i have massively overcomplicated for my use but whatever, its fun), which has a web panel for managing. Previously I have been able to use my public IP (which then naturally includes my domain) to connect to my web panel, ssh, game-servers.. you name it, over local network. Now after i setup the VPN on my router, i can no longer do this. My domain resolves without a problem by pinging it, but i cannot access any servers or my web panel over the local network with that ip.

Now normally this isnt a problem when connecting to game servers, I can just use the local ip (10.0.0.$server). But for my web panel i need ssl to connect, which makes it unsafe to use the local IP to connect to the server.

Connecting to any server with the domain from public internet works perfectly fine, both on my computer and from friends computers

I can't port forward on my ASUS Router and I keep getting an error message

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:11 PM PST

    Hello there.

I wanted to host a Minecraft server but sadly I need to use ngrok because I can't port forward. Today I decided to fix this and what I noticed is an error message: "The WAN IP is not the external IP. External IP-based services will not work.". My WAN configuration and my port forwarding config are attached. How could I fix this?

Need Help With How to Wire Home

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:24 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of adding an addition to my home and want to take the opportunity to run Ethernet into most of my rooms.

Ultimately, I'd like to have on the second floor at least 1 Ethernet port for each bedroom (4) and two hookups in the hallway ceiling for WAP if necessary.

I'm planning on having my modem, router, and switch all in the basement in a server rack. With that being said, what's the best way to wire this? Should I just run one wire from basement to attic, connected to a switch, and then from the attic switch have the 6 other lines go to each room/WAP point? Or do I run 6 lines from basement to each of the endpoints?

Also, I was planning on running solid Cat 6a riser cable.

    TIA

Google Wifi advice - just bought 3 pack for $199

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST

I set it up and noticed several odd things about it, so did some googling and found quite a lot of people here moving away from Google Wifi. My first impressions are positive; everything seems to work smoother and faster now. But, what I learned:

    1. Before it updated firmware, downloads were maxed out at comcast limit (400Mbps). After the firmware update, downloads maxed at 100Mbps.

    2. There is no QoS controls, but it has a "Priority" function; if you give priority to a device, the download speed will double for that device (200Mbps) and the other devices will be cut in half (50 Mpbs)

    3. If I enable the Guest network, the top speed on the main network is cut in half (50Mbps) and the top speed on the guest network is 20Mbps.

So my advice is DO NOT USE GUEST NETWORK.

On the one hand, it is disappointing to never get the 400Mbps speeds, but on the other hand, things sure run smoothly. Streaming shows start super fast now, fast forward on a streaming show works well now. So, I guess for those times I download something, I will give it priority. So far, I plan to keep this.

Are there other things you have noticed about Google Wifi other than the drastic speed limit?

EDIT: UPDATE: 24 hours later and now I get the full 400Mbps download speed on my ethernet connected PC, and above 200Mbps on my iPhone. I wonder if it started slow for a day to learn the patterns of usage? Or maybe it did an update behind the scenes? Weird stuff. It does work well, but I don't like not having any visibility into what it is doing...

Wanting to speed up internet speeds

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:59 PM PST

I recently switched over to service through Frontier and went with their 500/500 service. My house is not wired with cat 5 cable. Frontier provided me with the NVG6468MQ that is connected to a moca connection then connected to the wall. What's my best option for getting optimal speeds throughout my 3,800 square foot home? Would I be able to utilize another mocha connection in one of the bed rooms? Any insight is appreciated, thank you.

    Router, internet question. Please help!

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:56 PM PST

This might sound confusing but I'm in awe right now, because I have no clue what is wrong with my computer or router or both lol. I'm not very tech savvy so please dumb down your guys responses lol.

One day my computer just randomly took longer to connect to the internet. Since forever I had this pc, I get connected to the internet basically instantly as I'm logging in, however now it takes a good 20-30 seconds to connect. I tried different wires and no luck. I thought maybe it was the ports, but here is where the issue is. My router only has 2 ethernet ports, but I have multiple things I want connected to the router at one time, so I bought a switch. All my gaming consoles are connected to the switch while my pc is connected to the router. I tried plugging it into my switch instead of the router and the internet connects instantly. Mind you if this was the only issue it would be fine with me, however the internet is slow when connected straight to the router but not the switch.

I thought I came up with a conclusion it was just the one port on my router that was messed up, but I tried the other port and it was also slow. The strange part is when I'm finally connected and I start browsing the web, the internet is still hit or miss. Sometimes it loads fast and sometimes slow. However, when I'm in a game for instance, league of legends or Call of Duty Cold War I never drop in ping or connection. I thought maybe it was My web browser but I did everything. I tried deleting chrome and redownloading it. I tried internet explorer; it was still hit or miss.

Also the strange thing is, as of now I'm using all the ports in my switch because its running smooth, but the switch is obviously plugged in and connected to the router so why is the connection strong in the switch? Both ports in my router take forever to connect, but the switch connected to it, works fine.

I tested both ports on the router with my xbox one and ps4 and they both took as long as my pc to connect to the internet. However when connected to the switch it was almost instant.

What do you guys think the issue is? By the way my wifi works fine too. So is it the ports, the router itself, a virus perhaps (I have no clue if there is even a virus for this lol; just throwing ideas), or my pc ( but it connects fine to the switch). Thank you everyone so much in advance.

Is IPSec good for streaming video within tunnel?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:41 PM PST

I have 2 pfSense boxes in different countries with IPSec connecting the two. Symmetrical 100mbps fiber on both ends allow over 75Mbps throughput between the m, which is awesome. Ping is around 200ms. Everything is great, except streaming real time video from one site to a media server on the other site. Buffering and pixelated images all the time for a stream that uses less than 10mbps.

I have configured limiter on both pfSense to handle BufferBloat and I am getting A+ from DSL Report on both sites

Is there anything I can tweak to allow live video stream to play smoothly?

One of the sites has a Pppoe modem, which LAN port is connected to the pfSense WAN. It has DMZ configured to it. The other side has fiber being converted to Ethernet and going directly to the pfSense

Feedback on AP choice enGenius, Zyxel, or Netgear(lol, but great reviews on their new AP)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST

I've been battling with my consumer grade Router/AP/Extender construct handling my IoT home. With the Covid work-from-home orders, problems were less than desirable. Ive ended up hotspotting many Zoom meetings as a result.

Ive been running on a Zyxel C3000z ISP router, a Netgear R8000 flashed with dd-wrt in AP mode as dedicated 2.4Ghz IoT AP, and Netgear EX7000 extender to piggyback the Zyxel 2.4 and 5G to my shop.

I have 70+ 2.4Ghz IoT devices, 10 2.4 Ghz 1080p smartcams, 4 Firesticks, a couple laptops, Home Assistant Server, and some Dev Server RPi's

Im looking at moving to SMB APs WiFi 6, to handle the loads.

Im considering either EnGenius, Zyxel, or Netgear as they all fall in the budget. Their all 802.11ax 2x2 with comparable processor power.

Is this the right direction, and opinions on Manufacturer?

Under Contract for a new home (Mesh System or UniFi wireless uplinks)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:48 PM PST

IT Pro here... been a UniFi guy for a long time. My current home (built in 2002, and ~2,200sf) was pre-wired with cat5e as dual phone jacks in most rooms. Upon moving in, I removed the dual RJ11 plates and replaced them with single RJ45. Currently using a USG, 8-port 60W POE switch at the core powering an AC Pro, in-wall AC Pro and a couple of 8-port non-POE switches and AC Lite on an injector.

New home is 3,500sf and was built in 2016 but no wiring at all - potentially can run a cable up an interior wall and mount the AC Pro upstairs in the center of the house. I do not anticipate this covering the entire footprint of the house.

Curious people's experience with the wireless uplinks with UniFi. What WAPs do you suggest? I know the more radios the better so there's other radios available for clients.

Would you: do what I described and replace the Pro with an LR? Leave the pro and wirelessly uplink a couple of Lites in different parts of the house? Or go with a more traditional mesh system that does the things automagically with less control.

    Thanks in advance!

    Seeking router recomendation

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:19 PM PST

Noob here, seeking a simple answer from randos on the internet that I trust more than Amazon reviews.

So I have gigabit internet at the wall. This is a new service to my town and it is going to be light years faster than what we had.

My provider/installer is pushing these super whole home wifi systems for some ridiculous reason, and yes they sound great but are totally unnecessary, at least for our household's application, not to mention my eyebrows went to my hairline when I saw the cost.

I was just hoping I could get a recommendation based on the following:

    1. I want the full gigabit (or as close as possible) speed to my PC, on a wired connection. The provider's box is two feet from where my router is going, which is literally on my PC's desk. WIFI and my PC will not be happening.

    2. I don't care if I have any more than 500mbps on a wireless connection. I would go for less if it cheapened the router up, so long as I stayed on the 1Gig wired connection to my PC. It doesn't need to be much (at all) higher than 1gig as...well...that's more than what my service says I'll be getting.

    3. Typical usage will be gaming on the PC and wireless video streaming to TV, and your typical cell phone/ipad wireless device usage.

    4. I think this can be done for under $120...am I wrong? I don't need a huge fancy totally gapless network.

Here are a couple units that jumped out at me, I would appreciate any feedback to let me know I'm for sure getting what I want.

Thank you in advance for any responses.

    Access DVR behind NAT

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:42 AM PST

Here is a drawing of my network structure

I have some camera"s, connected to the internet over 4G. I'd like to access them over the internet, but I cannot forward ports.

Some possible solutions I've found myself:

    • Create a VPN so I can access the remote network, but I don't know if this is possible without portforwarding
    • Fake the portforwarding by letting the Raspberry Pi open a connection to my NAS somehow.

Ideally I want to access my camera via http://81.82.1.1:8080

Can someone point me in the right direction, or give some advice?

Brother in room next to me has perfectly fine ping (20 ms constant), while I have ping spikes every few seconds, sometimes even averaging 200 ms - Both connected via. Wired Powerline Adapters to the same router.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST

Problem pretty much summed up in the title.

I have been having this problem for years now, ever since he started playing games on PC too. I've tried more or less everthing, and it honestly makes no sense.

I would say at least half of the time, it is pretty much playable - although I still have to suffer spikes every few minutes. The other half of the time it is actually disgustingly bad. And fewer times, I would have better connection if I were to connect to the McDonalds down the road.

His room is literally adjacent to mine, seperated by the same wall. The WiFi router is reasonably far away - like two floors down. At first glance that would seem to be the problem seeing as though we are connected via. Powerline adapters, yet my brother has no issues whatsoever; even going as far as to complain about 30ms constant on some days.

I've done antivirus checks with many different softwares, changed ethernet cables, invested in a way more expensive Powerline adapter, and even swapped mine with his to see if that would solve the problem - the adapters weren't even the issue.

I've even reinstalled Windows, and tried quick fixes from YouTube - which are way out of my depth.

Drivers are up to date and all, and at this point I'm banking on it just being something to do with the router.

Please let me know if any of you have experienced somthing similar, or have an idea of what possibly could be the problem. You can probably tell that I do not know all that much about Networking, so try dumbing everything down as much as possible, thank you.

Can I use any cat wire on any modem?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:50 PM PST

I have a modem from Telus (t3200) and wondering what is the highest type of Ethernet cable I can connect to it. I was thinking about buying a cat 6 cable. But if this hardware doesn't support it then I'll just get the cheaper cat 5. I just don't know what is the highest cable for this modem.

What are the other cables from this splitter likely going to?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:40 PM PST

The "in" is from the fios ONT. what would the cable with the "data" label on it be going to? Might that be a leftover tag? The data runs on Ethernet to the router. Trying to determine if these are even used. I don't have cable tv service. I am trying to figure it out so I can run data through the coax but would likely need to replace the splitter. Before doing so I wanted to figure out what they all go to. The only one I know for sure is the ONT because I can follow it. One of the white cables does go to an unused coax outlet in an office.

OpenWRT - Cloudflare DNS Painfully Slow

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:46 PM PST

Hi everyone. I am not super knowledgeable of DNS so please forgive/correct me if anything is wrong here.

I've been having an issue for a while now where my internet connection is painfully slow because name resolution takes a long time and occasionally fails.

I was previously running PiHole (set to use Cloudflare DNS) and had OpenWRT configured to use that as my primary DNS server with Cloudflare set as the secondary.

After having these issues, I bypassed PiHole completely and am just using Cloudflare's primary and secondary servers but am still getting these issues.

Removing the custom settings and letting it fallback to my ISP's DNS seems to solve the issue, but I would prefer not to do this.

I have a hard time believing it's a problem with Cloudflare being slow, and am inclined to believe I am just missing some vital information about how this works and subsequently misconfigured something.

I'm on a 400 Mbps connection so it shouldn't be a "speed" issue. I also don't really have many other non-standard settings configured in OpenWRT so I don't think that's it either.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Please let me know if I need to provide more information about anything in particular.

Help regarding switch to a new router

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:42 PM PST

Hello, i have a router that i got from my isp and o would like to switch to a better one to get faster WiFi speeds. How do i do it? I have seen that my router has a cable that is providing internet and tv access to the router, and then another cable (that is presumably rj-45) provides tv signal to another box that provides the same signal to my tv (i have cable tv). Thats my main concern, how does tv signal work on routera that are not the oem shit that your isp gives you. Any help would be really appriciated.

Disable Wifi on Router or get new router
