Link Aggregation on 2 NIC Teamed Connection maxed at 1Gbps total all users/devices Posted: 29 Jan 2021 01:55 PM PST Greetings. I need some help. I have created a Teamed NIC on my Win2016 Essentials server (2 1Gbps ports) and it is maxing out a total connection speed to multiple devices (2 computers and NAS) of only 1 Gbps. Not 1 Gbps per device, but 1 Gbps total from the server. I understand that the most that a device will be able to send/receive is 1 Gbps due to how Link Aggregation works. This is not an issue of large vs small files, since the files I am transferring are multiple 2+ GB files. The Link Aggregation is LACP/Dynamic on all applicable server and switch connections. Both computers and NAS have a gigabit network adapter. All devices transfer at approx. 1 Gbps if no other computer is using the network. Essentially, the two lane 50 MPH highway that should be allowing 50 MPH per lane is acting like a single lane 50 MPH highway. Network Switch is a Linksys LGS318 which allows LACP LAGs. Thanks in advance. Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:06 PM PST I recently moved. I won't go into how awful the internet is here, ive vented enough. What you need to know is it's Hughesnet satellite, barely 3 MB/s download (on a good day) average .5 MB/s. I called spectrum and a technician came out tonight. This is the property he drove down , I live at the white dot in the top half of the picture. In all aspects it's beautiful, isn't that such a cute little heart shaped pond? And the windmills, it's almost sublime in the morning. However, in regards to the 21st century the technician was bringing with him, the property might as well have been in a moon crater. Now, it's pretty impressive that there's satellite internet and TV out here, even phone hook ups. These are the wires right outside my house , basically road side telephone poles. In the first picture of the property, you might notice a straight driveway right down to our house from the road, versus the one that curves in front of the first house then connects to ours. Unfortunately during winter, this driveway is unusable. For reference, the distance from the house down the driveway to the road is 2500 ft Here's what the technician told me. Basically, they'd have to lay a fiber optic cable down the entire length of the poles. Now, having the poles makes that pretty simple in terms of setting them up, a bucket truck will need to install them. However, my driveway is very thin, a Ford 3500 gets down here no issues, and that's a dually, so I figure a bucket truck will be fine, but the pain of construction might cause issue. The main issue is the length from the road. He told me they don't have any cables above 2000 ft, so they'd have to use a splicer if they wanted to connect them in field, and he told me that was a big if. Here's where I start getting confused, I'm not sure what it means to splice the fiber optic cable. I understand it means connecting two cables in some way, however I'm confused at what is actually set up, is the splicer something they leave for it all to work or is it like a field tool kit they can use on call for connecting two cables? He didn't get too much into this, but what are the issues with splicing? He did mention they sound set up a "green box" I'm not sure if he meant leave it or not And if I dare ask for my specific situation, what cost am I looking at? So, if this was just for leisure, I would adapt. Honestly, I'd love to take advantage of this beautiful living space to detoxify myself from the internet and other online networking. However, I work remotely and have been for a year, my job and income are incredibly important. Part of why it's so important is because I'd like to go back to school, which remains affordable if I can do it from online at my home, which is very much available during the pandemic. If I cannot get this fiber optic, unfortunately my chances of keeping my job and going back to school take a big hit. Overall, what am I looking at in terms of this project? Sorry if there's more info needed, I can't find much online concerning spectrum specifically, all I know is he would refer me to their consreu department and they would see about it. I'm curious about fiber optic at this distance as well, say my a miracle of every god of every major religion on earth I actually get this set up, will the speeds be worth it? I'd say I'll need, at a minimum, of 50-75 mb/s, my plan through spectrum is set up for a 400 MB download speed cap. [link] [comments] |
Does MU-MIMO allow a single device to have full duplex communication over WiFi? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST My understanding is that wireless is typically half duplex then
If a router can simultaneously transmit/receive data to multiple devices, then can it do both for a single device? If a router can, how can I tell if a connected device also supports simultaneous sending/receiving of data to the router? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jan 2021 05:14 PM PST Hi there, I have a direct connect between a Win10 and a Linux Machine with 5GBit. Short version: On Windows 10 I have set the MTU to 9014 (no other similar value in drop down) on the card Asus XG-C100C 10G (AQC107) and I set the MTU to 9000 with netsh. But Ping -f -l 2000 … This seems to be gone now. Now it says request timeout. Looks like it takes time for the setting. But it's still not working. In wireshark I can see that only one package of size 1514 arrives on Ubuntu. And if I look into the package I see that the size is 8978 and some text "IPv4 total length exceeds packet length (1500)" Long version: Win10: I have a Asus XG-C100C 10G (AQC107). On the Adapter the „jumbo package" is set to 9014. The value is form a drop down. The other values are around 2k, 4k and 16k. Ubuntu 18.4: Initially I had another Asus card. So I downloaded and compiled the driver. But I need to PCIe slot so I use a USB3 Sabrent „Sabrent USB Typ-A oder Typ-C zu 5-Gigabit Ethernet Adapter"(AQC111). Same chip family and driver. On Ubuntu I set the MTU on the device to 9000. ifconfig shows 9000. Despite the MTU on Win is set to 9014 „netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces" shows it at 1500. I could already ping from Ubuntu to Win and I see in Wireshark on Ubuntu that Ubuntu sends a 9000 package but the answer is 6 fragmented packages of size 15xx. If I now set the MTU „netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Ethernet 3" mtu=9000 store=persistent" on Windows ping doesn' t work anymore. On Wireshark on Ubuntu I see a 9K package is sent to Win but only one 1.5K package is returned and ping doesn't seem to recognize this. So again, if with netsh the MTU is still 1500 I can ping from Ubuntu with a 9K package and get 6 1.5K package back from windows. If I set the MTU to 9000 with netsh. I still see Ubuntu sending a 9K but Win only returns one package of 1.5K and the ping on Ubuntu doesn' t do anything. So I think Windows is the issue but I don' t know what else I can do. BTW I disabled ipv6 on both devices I ping with ping -M do -s 8950 192.168.10.1 on Ubuntu and with ping -f -l 8950 192.168.10.2 on Windows [link] [comments] |
Is lower packet amount large packet size better for ping? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:23 AM PST I'm going to modify TCP/IP to improve my ping as well as Nagle's algorithm which reduces the amount of packets needed to transmit data, but is it better for lowering ping in-game? [link] [comments] |

Does Merlin support connecting to other wireless networks discreetly? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:43 PM PST I previously played with Merlin a few years ago, and I can't remember if this was a native feature of the stock firmware or Merlin, but I was able to connect to another wireless network but it acted like an extender instead of a wireless gateway; adding all connected devices to my router to the other wireless network's router. In DDWRT- only my router shows up on the other wifi network which is preferred. Is this possible with Merlin? I'd prefer to switch to Merlin for the UI/UX as I don't use many other features of DDWRT. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Home network | not working on restart after DHCP server change Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:56 PM PST Hello all, I tried researching this problem and found partial answers, and I think I'm close to a resolution, and I'm hoping somebody here can help. I recently set up pi-hole to run DNS, and it has been working great. I'm running it on a raspberry pi. I noticed that it has the option to run a DHCP server too. This is also great, because for whatever reason, my provider's combo router/modem will not let me set up static IP assignments in the admin console. The DHCP server in pi hole will. I researched it before enabling it of course, and I knew I had to disable the DHCP service on the modem/router, to avoid having 2 DHCP servers on the network. I disabled the router's DHCP server, and enabled the pi-hole's DHCP server, and everything worked perfectly. I could see all my devices pick up new addresses from my raspberry pi's DHCP server. For a handful of reasons, I needed to restart a number of devices on my home network, which included both the pi as well as the router. When they came up, I had the following happen:
Eventually I had to give up figuring out the underlying issue, and had to hard reset the router/modem (which re-enabled DHCP); I disabled DHCP on my pi. That's the situation in which I find myself now. I'd like to re-enable the DHCP server on the pi, and disable the router's DHCP server, but i'm afraid it will work until the next time these devices are power cycled. I suspect I'm missing a configuration or two from my pi - something that lets it know the router is the gateway or something. It was probably configured dynamically through DHCP on the router, then stayed through the DHCP server change, but was lost when I restarted my network. Is that accurate? If so, how might I go about configuring that? I've been poking around in /etc and I see a number of likely candidates, but I don't want to start editing these files unless I have better direction/understanding of what I'm about to change. TIA for your help! [link] [comments] |
UK - which broadband service is quickest to setup from order to delivery to setting up? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:51 AM PST I am about to get a new flat and need to have my broadband set up as soon as possible because I will be starting a new job and working from home. Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST I was wondering if anyone had ideas as to why my wifi speeds are so limited. To make a long story short, I pay for 300mbps internet and am only able to get ~40 mbps over wifi. When I connect direct to the modem, I'm instantly at 250+. I have tried multiple routers, being in the same room as the router, different channels, both 2.4 and 5g channels, and nothing seems to improve it. If I go ethernet through either router, I'm at 250+ but wifi won't go above 50 regularly. The routers I have tested are the velop ac1200 and the tp link archer a7. Edit: I should also add, when I run the speed test through the linksys app, it shows 276Mbps download at the router. I just can't seem to get near that speed through the wifi. [link] [comments] |

Connect one computer to two Identical Networks? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:08 PM PST I want to connect one windows 10 computer with two network cards to two different networks that use the same private ip addresses. Each network has a device with the identical ip address on its own network (eg., 10.98.30.1). I can connect separate network cards to each network but how do I configure windows so I can simultaneously access device one (ip address 10.98.30.1 on the first network) and device two (ip address 10.98.30.1 on the second network)? Clarification: I want to access device one as 10.98.30.1 and device two as 10.97.30.1 from my computer even though device two thinks its ip address is 10.98.30.1 on the second network. Cat5e Keystone Wiring question Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:34 AM PST Hello, My house has wired connections in each room which all lead to the garage where there is a box that houses all the cables. I unscrewed one of the connection in the family room where there are two cat5e jacks to see if I can use the other one as "return" to a switch the box to connect the other wires. One of the two cat5e jacks (the one I use to connect the router) has the white and brown and white wire not punched down into the jack. The other cat5e jack has a different color ethernet cable but all the connections are punched down into the jack. So confused on what this means for my situation. Any advice/comments are appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Help! Lag issue resolutions + router questions Posted: 29 Jan 2021 06:50 PM PST Hi all, I really don't know much about this. I've been experiencing lag while gaming online on my XB1 and on PC since I moved in. I'm planning on streaming and playing video games online with another player on the same internet connection but as predicted that has been impossible. I'm not sure if I have the right router/speed for what I'm trying to achieve. I plan on connecting my PC to an ethernet port, for one. Is this what people use to do that? plus a specific type of cable? I'm also willing to upgrade my router as well if the hardwire doesn't help with the lag. I'm currently using this surfboard and this ASUS router but since the lag happens on both I'm doubtful. I also ran a speed test and I believe it's acceptable? My router has to be upstairs as I don't have any working connections downstairs where my XB1 is. PC is upstairs in a separate room from router. What would I need to achieve my goal? Thanks a lot! Band Steering and Wireless Ethernet Bridge Posted: 29 Jan 2021 06:42 PM PST Does anyone know of a wifi router that can connect in bridge mode to a wifi router with band steering, like the Telus Arcadyan wifi Hub, and correctly negotiate the 5GHz band? I have tried an Asus RT-AC68U in media bridge mode and a Netgear R7000 in bridge mode. Both only allow you to choose one band to use. Both can connect on the 2.4GHz band and provide internet access over ethernet to connected devices. Neither can connect on the 5GHz band, or at least there is no internet access when I select the 5GHz band on either. I am sharing an internet connection with my landlord and do not have access to the router which is a Telus Arcadyan Wifi Hub with band steering and only broadcasts a single network. Download speeds on 2.4GHz are limited to 115 Mbps, but on devices that can connect on 5GHz, I get 500Mbps down! Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:38 PM PST Hello, Im really not good with this staff, i tried looking it up and got even more confused. Our modem/router is on the main floor. I am in the basement where i work from. I can easily connect and ethernet cable to my modem and bring it to the basement. But i have no idea what type of device i need to buy to connect to the Ethernet cable and extend my wifi. I have seen a device on amazon called the tp-link A1750 but it seems that it just uses wifi?? Or can it take an Ethernet cable and give me Wifi. My budget is $200 CAD. THANK YOU [link] [comments] |
Patch panel on wall or in rack? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:31 PM PST Moving into a new-to-me house, cleaning up a bunch of cables by terminating them in a patch panel. But where should that panel go? 1) in the middle of a rack, with short jumpers to the switch, etc. This seems to be a tidy, common approach. But the purpose of the patch is to terminate the cables in a neat permanent way. What if I move and take the rack? 2) So an alternative is mounting the terminating patch panel on the wall above & behind the rack, then using longer patch cables into the rack. A move is easy, but the patch cables are longer and the front of the rack is less tidy. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |

I have poor internet in my apartment. How can I alleviate this issue? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 06:12 PM PST I live in an apartment which provides free internet to all tenants. Unfortunately, as a college student, it is incredibly slow and I typically get kicked off of my Zoom lectures at least once a day due to poor internet connection. I also recently got a new gaming system and the system will not even connect to the internet, so I can't play online. There is no modem nor router in my physical apartment and no ethernet cable outlet (probably not what it is called, I'm not very experienced with this stuff). The only thing remotely related is an outlet for connecting my TV to the cable in the wall. Is there anything I can do to make the connection any stronger without having to buy my own modem and router? [link] [comments] |
What Type of Modem Should I Get? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 05:39 PM PST Recently purchased a 2500sqft home and had xfinity come in and set up the internet (400mbps). They gave me a single modem/router unit, but I don't want to pay monthly for it, so I'm looking for something that will be enough for our use. This is also a temporary setup as xfinity was not my first choice for an ISP. Our area is still new so we only had two choices and the other guys are still working on it. Once they are done, I'm cancelling and switching to their 1GB fiber (hopefully within 30 days) and also plan to use my own modem and router. I'm not a big tech person, but I do want to make sure we have a somewhat advanced home lol. I also planned to get the Google WiFi mesh system, which I believe is a router. We would be using the internet to work from home, stream movies/sports/Netflix/Hulu/etc, and will also have smart devices connected like ring security/echo devices/thermostats/dyson/roomba/etc. Did some preliminary research and saw a comment about how the Motorola MB8600 was "best." My question is... is it too much for my use? Any other suggestions on a unit that will last years and be able to withstand the amount of usage? [link] [comments] |
Ethernet Switch - Can't Connect Properly Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:08 AM PST Hoping someone can help me with this issue. Disclaimer: my understanding of networking is somewhat limited; apologies if anything here is unclear. New house, pre-wired with CAT6 to pretty much all the rooms; hub is in a closet. In that hub I have an Arris Surfboard cable modem with two Ethernet ports. One port connects to the living room Cat6 cord, where the router is (router won't fit in the hub). To be clear, due to space constraints there's no way to connect the router directly to the modem; it has to be in a different room. That connection (router connected to ethernet...connection? outlet? in the living room wall) is working fine. I purchased a tp-link tl-sg108 8-port Ethernet switch, assuming I could plug that into the second port on the modem, connect the remaining Cat6 lines to the switch, and voila: active Ethernet ports. It's not working. I did also try connecting a Cat6 line directly into the second port to connect my son's gaming PC to ethernet. That didn't work either; I got a message that there was no IP address. In short, I'm lost and don't know how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, and please feel free to ELI5. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Not sure if it matters, but ISP is Comcast. EDIT 2: Thanks very much to everyone for your help. Think I'm going to have to just stick the router in the closet and leave the hub door open to make the proper connections. [link] [comments] |
Some trick to smooth a tangled up and wrinkled Ethernet wire? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:52 PM PST Need some advise on getting a new home router and wifi. I'm coming from a NetGear Nighthawk which I've never been particularly fond of and realize those types of router can be gimmicky "good for gaming". Totally comfortable with flashing a device if needed. Wants:

Wired Internet connection no longer works after Comcast "updated" modem Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:46 PM PST I use an Xfinity XFi modem/router from Comcast/XFinity. We've been having issues with packet loss the past few days, so I contacted customer support and the person told me he was resetting my modem/router due to an issue with the firmware. When it came back on, things were working... about 10 minutes after getting off the chat, however, my internet connection to my desktop, which is hard wired directly to the mode, died. Wifi works, hardline did not. I plugged in my laptop to the hardline and it worked. I messed with it for a couple of hours and finally decided to reformat my PC just in case there was some setting that was blocking the connection. No luck. Ethernet port still didn't work. So I was thinking my ethernet port maybe just so happened to die shortly after talking to Comcast. Plugged in a USB-to-ethernet adapter and it worked. Then, on a whim, I decided to try connecting my PC to a switch, and run the cable from the modem to the switch... and wouldn't you know, it works. If I take that direct line out of the switch, and plug it in to my PC, nothing. Plug them both back in to the switch? Working internet. I'm stumped... anyone know what the hell might be going on and how I can fix it? [link] [comments] |
