I solved a mystery: My Ring Chime was disconnecting because my Huawei modem was ARP spoofing Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:16 AM PST My Ring Chime was refusing to connect to WiFi, but pretty every other device on the network was fine. It turned out my modem was both ARP spoofing as well as changing it's MAC address, and escaped the MAC-based vlan I had originally gated it behind. The full story as well as the tools I used to find it (Wireshark did most of the work) is here if you are interested it read more: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:12 PM PST My son is 12 and fascinated with home networking. I have shared some content from this sub with him. He is using our house as a learning lab and just posted his first video on terminating Cat5e cables and is working on a video on setting up a WiFi mesh network. I'm not sure if posting a link to his channel violates any rules of this sub but please check it out if you get a chance. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
CODA-4589 portforwarding problems Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:13 PM PST I have the horrible modem provided by cogeco the CODA-4589 and for whatever reason when I try to portfoward with it, it doesnt work. I tried everything I found online. If someone could please guide me in the right direction that would be great. The original problem was when I was connected to a router then connected to the modem/router but then I just eliminated the 2 router because it was pointless and just added more points for possible problems. Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:05 PM PST I have xfiniti and my data usage spiked this month to 4,325GB when my last three months was 700 GB average (nothing over 720GB). I chatted with Xfiniti and they told me don't worry first months overage is free. Weird thing is a week ago the usage spiked throughout the middle of the night setting off overage alerts all night while my whole house was sleeping. Any guesses what's going on? Is it xfinity messed up or something on my network wonky? [link] [comments] |
Random sites can't be connected to (ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED) Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST Hey y'all, I've been having a problem for quite a while now and despite days of debugging I haven't found a solution (though there are many similar problems whose solutions didn't work) Seemingly random sites are inaccessible from my home PC, returning a ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error. Visual image. The error had started with Dropbox, where nothing on its site can be accessed and recently, I've discovered that pastebin is also being blocked as well. I'm honestly more worried that this issue will "spread" to more important sites so I've been debugging non-stop to no avail. Other notes
What I know
Solutions tried Many typical solutions that google comes up with did not work, these are the ones I can remember trying.
My apologies if this type of question is not related to the sub, I am at the end of my rope trying to fix this and am not sure where else to ask. Thanks for help y'all :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:43 PM PST Just moved to a new house that was built in 1987 so naturally no ethernet jacks anywhere even despite renovation in 2008. But for some reason the previous owner decided let's put coax in all the room with outside cable runs. I am debating whether it's just easier to attach the MoCA adapters to these coax lines or get someone to run the CAT6 or CAT7 cabling? I am IT guy myself but I never really dealt with the hardware side of networking to be honest. I know what MoCA is but if I'm not understanding it wrong, I need to plug one MoCA between the modem and main coax line and then just install MoCA adapters in each room? Does it matter if all these coax are connected via a splitter to the main ISP feed or is that what the adapter would do and route the signal automatically? All the walls are closed and no attic access either really besides on top of the master bedroom. I do have a basement but that's fully finished as well. Home Network layout: https://imgur.com/a/Nxw70HB I do have this bulky phone box outside if that can be used to sort of pull the ethernet cabling somehow? GL-iNet VPN With Apple TV - Unraid VPN Server Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:20 PM PST Okay this is a pretty specific question. I am currently in the process of moving away from my parents house. I have a VPN Server setup on an UnRaid Box that I am leaving at their house to be able to connect back to their network. The UnRaid is hosting a lot of items for them. I want to be able to connect back, using something like the GL-iNet Blume, as a VPN gateway, with a setup of something like this: Modem -> Router -> Blume -> Apple TV I do not want to put the whole network behind the VPN connection, and the router I am using doesn't support VPN connections anyway. I specifically want it to connect to the Apple TV to be able to use their cable companies app, which only works if I am connected to their internet. The UnRaid server has a Tunneled VPN using WireGuard, and as I see on their website the Blume supports WireGuard connections. I am also looking at the Blume, because it does not support wifi, and this Blume device would be pretty much right next to the router, and I don't want any interference on the wifi signals because they are so close to each other. For pretty much everything, I use Plex that I am hosting on a VPS, but for live sporting events, or if something is on Cable that I REALLY wanna watch, I want to be able to use the Blume VPN connection to tunnel back to the UnRaid server at their house. It's very rare that I ever watch cable, usually just for live sports. Would something like this even work? [link] [comments] |

Can a TP-Link AC1200 Dual Band Mesh 3-Pack (M4) Owner verify this please? 802.11b, no password wifi connection with orbi router Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:22 PM PST I am trying to connect some old nintendo systems to my wifi, but from my research they only accept 802.11b, no-password wifi connections. Does anyone know if there is a way to do this with an orbi system? I dug through my router settings but could not find anything. Perhaps its best to just buy some cheap old router and fiddle with that? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:22 PM PST if I plug the ethernet cable from the ONT to the Archer A7, will I be able to setup the internet/Wi-Fi/ethernet without a problem? Assuming the Web interface pops up? Would the DHCP be reset? And if the A7 turns out to be a dud, would I just be able to plug in the g1100, have my Wi-Fi/ethernet backup and running no problem, until I can find a suitable replacement? Mesh network: Google Nest WiFi giving problems... better system? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:52 PM PST I live in a 2000 sq ft apt and have gigabyte FiOS on on the new Verizon G3100. I recently upgraded from my old quantum G1100 because I started experiencing internet issues in December. It was an old router and I was out of contract, so I agreed on a new package and bought the new router too. I have two Google Nest WiFi pods/pucks that create a small network with about 20 devices attached. I also used them with the G1100 when the issues started. One pod is Cat8'ed to the G3100. The other is a wireless mesh unit in the other room. About 6 weeks ago, my wife and I on our iPhone 12 Max would get little to almost no signal for a minute or two while we sit in the same room as the router Nest pod. Ookla would report like 1mb down. It's sort of making me crazy because I can't figure it out. My laptop will drop out now too. I just factory reset them and it's still happening. The G3100 WiFi radios are off. I'm about to call to put it in bridge mode, but I think I need to call support to do that. I can't figure out what the heck it could possibly be. Wondering if anyone has suggestions? Seems to be similar experiences due to firmware upgrades, but doesn't it seem crazy that Google wouldn't fix that stat? ALSO, would love to know if I should just dump it altogether and get a more premium mesh router like Netgear Orbi? Would love to hear thoughts... [link] [comments] |
adding a second router as an AP Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:50 PM PST I currently have an Asus RT-AC68U and I don't seem to be having any issues with coverage or speed. The only thing I would like is if my 5 GHz network could reach more of the house. I was thinking of buying a second one and using either the Mesh network or hard wiring it to the other one. I do have an unused cat5 cable already run from the router to the area where I would want to put the second one. What do you think? I am also open to other ideas [link] [comments] |
Powerline Adapter to connect to a switch? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:48 PM PST I understand Ethernet is Ethernet. But is there any reason why connecting another switch at the far side via a Powerline adapter wouldn't work? Use case is this: Basement point of entry for cable modem and router - plus a switch for hardwire Ethernet connections terminate there. Far other end of house, my spectrum 100mbit is getting about 9-10mbit. Currently have some WiFi mesh enabled range extenders but everyone says they're hot garbage and reduces your usable bandwidth. However I'm still slow on a hardwire. So first I have a cable tester in the mail to me. Maybe there's a bad connection. But if it's just signal loss, I'm looking at other options - moca or Powerline. For that end of the house, I wouldn't mind putting in a switch rather than take that Powerline connection and dedicate it to one device. Advice on what's ideal here? [link] [comments] |

Network for a house - wired and wireless. Need specific advice, please! Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:57 PM PST We have a new (to us) house, and are planning on installing two indoor and one outdoor APs, as well as a PtP link out to the shop and one more indoor AP there. Most things in the house will be wired, but with as often as guests will want seamless access, we are saturating the area with WiFi. The APs want to be PoE, which means wired backhaul, so the current crop of retail homeowner mesh is right out - not much, if any, PoE, for some odd reason. After looking at Ubiquiti and TP-Link, it looks like we are set on the Omada SDN kit - OC200 controller, EAP225/235 indoor, EAP225 outdoor, a pair of CPE210 for the PtP¹, and a pair of PoE switches, 24 port for the house, and 8 port for the shop. What's got me slightly befuddled and unsure is whether we absolutely need SDN switches. We wish to have decent controls, so we are definitely wishing managed switches, but do we actually need the TL-SG2428P, or is the TL-SG1428PE going to offer all the connectivity we need, with the additional requirement of configuring the switches individually, not from the Omada SDN Controller UI? Thanks for any solid information about this - it wouldn't hurt to get away paying a few hundred dollars less if we can. ¹ Also, we may skip the pair of CPE210 in favor of a run of Cat6 cabling out to the shop. We haven't decided that just yet. [link] [comments] |
Tired of Google Nest crappy Firmware.... looking at other options.. Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:49 PM PST I currently have 2 google nest routers... connected via ethernet. and 1 wireless access point. Speeds have been horrible since they changed the firmware. 1-2 mbps slow. I am having to reset the system every day to get back to normal speeds. I have 200mbps service. I have three 2 stories and a basement. internet comes into the basement with ethernet to the main floor and 2 floor. What system should I get. Im leaning toward a Ubiquiti dream machine and 2 access points. Im pretty tired of messing with stuff. I had a velop system before the Google Nest and the mesh system just seemed too slow... (30 mbps) at best most of the time. Any suggestions in the prosumer space? [link] [comments] |
Quick Question involving Mesh with an unmanaged switch Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:47 PM PST So I'm reconfiguring my gaming room/office and I'm introducing a bunch of stuff in the office that needs a wired network connection... A PC, a Mac , a PS5 and a Smart TV. I have the Linksys AX4200 which only has 3 ethernet ports on the back (not including the internet port). As of right now I have the Linksys AX4200 Wi-Fi 6 mesh system utilizing a star topology... Current Wiring: Fiber ONT > Main Router > Branching to 2 x Satellite Routers via wired backhaul I'm confused on what the best option is going forward... any help is greatly appreciated! The way I see it is that I have two options, which is correct? Option 1 - Fiber ONT to Main Router then use one port on the back of the router for the switch which would then branch out to all the office/gaming room clients. The other two Main Router ports would be used to connect the satellites. OR Option 2 - Fiber ONT to Main Router and then to switch. Switch would then supply BOTH the gaming room clients AND the satellites leaving the 2 remaining ports open on the back of the main router. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Isolated IOT network via second router Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:46 PM PST Hi! I have bought a second router (Linksys E1200) to put my smart devices on with the goal of them having no access to any internal devices I have connected to my ISP router yet still connect to the Internet. I have connected it to my ISP provided modem/router LAN - WAN ISP/R1- 192.168.1.1 DHCP RANGE 01-50 R2 WAN has an assigned IP of 192.168.1.51 on R1 Router IP 192.168.2.1 DHCP 1-50 Whilst these are on a separate network, I can still ping and connect to devices on R1 network. How do I get these totally seperate? Will DD-WRT do this for me? I should add my ISP router has 2.4ghz and 5Ghz channels so do not want to swap the priority around. I need the Linksys(Router 2) to be the isolated one. [link] [comments] |
Are all wireless APs "cloud based" these days? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:42 PM PST The time has come where I need to get a new wireless access point. I've been happy with my Draytek Vigors for some time now. Loads of settings, such as VLANs, RADIUS, etc. all on the devices, controlled by a web interface. Unifi is often the biggest suggested name in here, so I looked into it. Apparently no web interface, either you connect the to Ubiquiti's cloud management software, host your own, or use them as "standalone devices" controlled by an app - and from what I see they have very little settings too, compared to what my current Drayteks offer me. What's going on? Aside from going for a newer Draytek, it seems everything is controlled with an app or external cloud management system. Are there any other options for me that don't rely on proprietary apps to keep functioning properly? [link] [comments] |
What modem should I get with the cox internet preferred 150 plan? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:41 PM PST I'm not super savvy with networking so please bear with me. Basically my connection has been trash for multiple months, we bought a new router and not much changed. Sometimes my connection is fine but randomly throughout the day I start spiking and experiencing insane packet loss in both wifi and ethernet connections. Whenever the internet goes bad I unplug the power cord from the modem and plug it back in, it was a temporarily fix and I didn't think much of it. Called my ISP but they didn't help. Eventually I realized that the power cord doesn't plug in tightly into the modem, it's actually pretty loose. I came to the conclusion that it's either the cable or the modem power socket that's defective. Figured I would just buy a new modem since I'm already going to buy some stuff on Amazon. The modem I'm currently using is the DPQ3212. What modem would you guys recommended? [link] [comments] |
Advice on better Wi-fi setup in bungalow? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:26 PM PST Hi - I live in a bungalow and currently have 3 Google Wi-fi pucks (primary connected to BT hub). To get better Wi-fi to desks and consoles I also have 2 TP Link Powerline devices (different SSID) connected to my BT hub. It's ok but I want to replace them with a better solution since having the TP Link devices makes airplay hard in those rooms and I'm constantly changing networks. My GoogleWifi seems to have the firmware bug where I rarely get even close to full speed. This was always a temporary solution and I'd like to put PoE Ubiquiti access points on the ceilings. In a bungalow this is easy and much neater than putting cable in walls. The things I'm unsure about are:
Is there a different solution I should think about? I'm happy to pay for the right kit but in 7 years I've never had a solution that is simple for everyone and I'd just like to fix it now. Many Thanks [link] [comments] |

How do I delete device suffixes created by the Verizon router without the Verizon router? Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:46 PM PST I recently changed out my Verizon FiOS router with an Eero Pro and loving the performance. I also happen to install a Pi-hole to prevent ads on all IOT devices on my network. During a rabbit hole night of looking into the new network, I discovered that a couple of devices has the device name and the suffix "fios-router.home". I no longer have a Verizon router and the Eero Pro router app interface doesn't give the flexibility to edit device suffix names. Is there a solution and hopefully an easy solution that will help me organize my devices on the network and erase all "fios-router.home" suffixes? I've been reading that you can allegedly make the edits if the Verizon router was still being utilized on the network by accessing the UI through 192.168.1.1, but again I no longer have the router. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
