    Here are the links:

    Lenovo: https://www.ebay.com/p/12042448660

    Asus tuf (preorder) https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-tuf-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-11th-gen-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3060-512gb-ssd-eclipse-grey-eclipse-grey/6448933.p?skuId=6448933

The price is negligible, the only difference is about a month in delivery.

Generally I know the advice would be go for the newer gpu, but the 3060 is reported to be the 80w version and I'm not crazy about intel cpu.

I would rather have a ryzen 5000 series with a 3000 rtx around $1000. But I don't know that will be possible in the next 6 months.

    Thoughts?

Looking for a Gaming/Editing laptop for university. £1100

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:35 AM PST

Hello guys, I'm looking for a laptop that can do both editing and play modern games. My old laptop is the MacBook Pro 2015 but it's starting to run slow and battery life isn't the best.

I then bought the Helios 300 and I want a minimum RTX card to support the modern games I play. But the battery life is awful, yes gaming laptops will only provide around 4 hours but the Helios is not even good when running it for productive tasks. I tried tweaking the power plan but not much has changed. I can't undervolt the 2020 version properly either as Asus's bios is very restricted. I still have time to return the Helios 300 btw.

I will also be editing as my course is video production, I will be running adobe premiere pro and Da Vincci Resolve 17.

Would very much appreciate some help!

Looking for a Touch Screen Gaming Laptop. Help welcome :)

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:57 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      UK, £500-£800 is my budget
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I've never purchased new, so happy with used
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance probably over and above everything else. I'd like to be able to get the screen flat (either by reverse fold or lie down flat (keyboard and screen up) . Battery not that important
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not greatly.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming will be Fifa 21, Sims 4, the odd driving simulator (Project Cars, Euro Truck, Assetto Corsa, LFS etc). No Photo / Video editing.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch Screen is fairly important due to onenote editing. Optical drive not important. A numpad would be helpful, as would an ethernet port, but I have usb of both currently so not major.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I currently have a Gigabyte Aorus with i7-5700HQ and GTX 970m. I would like something better than this, but doesn't have to be blinding fast. Touch Screen is one of the main features i'd need. Happy with second hand up to around 2/3 year old. Would be nice to have an SSD (128GB+) alongside a HDD for storage. My current laptop has 2x 256gb SSD which isn't enough.

    Thanks guys!

Looking for UK (£500-800 budget) gaming laptop mainly for Sims 3 & 4?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:22 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Max £800 (was originally hoping to spend closer to £450-500, but willing to up to 800 if necessary)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not if I can avoid it.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Literally will just be used for gaming (and mainly just Sims 3&4 specifically) so performance is really the main priority - everything else is just a bonus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important at all!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Only required for gaming - sims 3/4 (with all expansions, etc) on higher settings is the main priority, but if upping the budget to the max £800 range would also give me potential to play more intense games like cyberpunk / Skyrim / etc, then I'd be happy to do that.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

All sims games with expansions, ideally on high settings, bonus would be knowing I had option to play more modern / intense releases like Cyberpunk (without it lagging) - but this isn't absolutely necessary.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      Nope.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't have a huge amount of knowledge on this area, so really appreciate any help people can offer. However from the brief research I have done so far, I have been considering these three laptops, so would love to know people's opinions on these (as well as any others that would suit my needs!) :

    1. Acer Nitro 5 AN515-44 15.6 Inch Gaming Laptop (AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1650Ti, Full HD 144Hz Display, Windows 10, Black) (£766 on Amazon)

    2. Acer Aspire 5 A515-55 15.6 inch Laptop - (Intel Core i5-1035G1, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Full HD Display, Windows 10, Black) (649 on Amazon)

    3. HP Pavilion 15-ec1001na 15.6 Inch Full HD Gaming Laptop - (Shadow Black) (AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 (4 GB Dedicated) Graphics, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10 Home)

    Thanks in advance :)

    Any Size - UK - £800 max

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:36 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £800, UK

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Performance (easily the most important for me)
    2. Battery life
    3. Build Quality
    4. Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lightweight and thin would be a bonus but not a priority.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Unity, Stardew, Rimworld, XCOM 1 & 2, Left 4 Dead, Dark Souls series. I've tended towards low spec games (currently using ASUS X541U) but would like the capacity to run higher spec games if possible.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As above - happy with lowest graphic settings as long as the performance is steady.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard would be great. Reliable build quality would be nice. The rest doesn't bother me much.

I would rather avoid dedicated gaming laptops as in my experience they look quite ugly - I want a laptop that will blend in but has decent specs.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently using ASUS Vivobook X541U, upgrading as it's taking forever to boot up and is suffering from frequent slowdown. I'm really just after a sleek-looking laptop with some power under the hood - something that is quick and responsive with general tasks, and also able to reasonably run mid-spec games.

I've also found the X541U to be quite loud when running (fan and strange chirping noises?!), so a quieter laptop would be ideal.

For reference, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 looks ideal for my needs, but it's been sold out for months in the UK.

I'm looking for a unicorn: great for gaming, touchscreen, quiet and cool predatory animal logo with lazers and lights coming out of its arse. I can't seem to find the whole package around $2,000.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:46 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

tl/dr: I love the way gaming laptops look and I want one very badly as a... touchscreen.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$2,000 U.S., but I'd pay a bit more for cool, predatory animal logo
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, more open to refurbished at a lower price point -- under $1,500 -- that way if it dies it's not such a loss. If I'm paying $2,000-$2,250 I'd want new. I balked at a used $1,900 Razer because of reliability issues.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
1.) Touchscreen - I'm old; 2.) Gaming-ready / good graphics (rtx-2060 or higher), good enough to play Overwatch with my teen; 3.) Cool factor (backlit keys, dragons, snakes and sh**).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not at all. It will never leave house.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Slight 17 preference, 15 good too
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Overwatch, Fortnite, etc. with my teen. My teen may do long sessions of Minecraft/Roblox until they get their own, vastly superior set-up this fall. I was aiming for 120 hz touchscreen for gaming purposes -- that's the best touch you can get but I might resign myself to 60 hz fps. I could only find 120 hz under $2,000 as refurbished.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touchscreen, backlit keys ideally colorful, wicked and evil looking lights
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I looked at getting a refurbished Razer Blade (cool predatory snakes) but the best I could find with a touchscreen was a 17 inch USED on ebay for $1,900. The reliability of Razer made me nervous so I'd only get one new and I think those are out of my price range.
    • I'm looking at an MSI on Amazon for $1,500 ("2021 Newest MSI Ultra Thin Creator 15 Laptop" (RTX 2060)), but it's a super boring -- no cool lights, colors, or lazer beams coming out of its arse. And the predatory dragon logo couldn't be more muted. That's what I'm leaning towards today because at least it has ONE dragon, but I feel like I need an onion belt. This post is my last attempt at something cooler before just buying that.
    • Please don't tell me to buy a Yoga mat. Even if it is sensible. I've had a disgusting hp for 5 years, I want something not sensible. I'd rather get an impractical, overpriced, used MSI Dragonshield spaceship with no touchscreen than something called Yoga.
    • I just want to say, "Thank you" to all of the gaming, laptop suggesting, pc building, laptop deals and battlestation-type subs on reddit. You guys are lovely and your communities are awesome. I went from knowing absolutely nothing about computers two months ago to knowing how foolish I am for not getting one of the new RTX-30 series graphics cards (I'll get that for my teen instead).

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Need help finding a laptop for computer science courses and projects

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:43 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Hi, like my title reads im trying to find options because atm im using the laptop from my work and I cant use for other purposes. So my focus is look for a windows laptop, with enough ram that can run python, R and other programs to start projects of data science/analysis (power bi, qliksense, sql coding etc).

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    800$, USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No. I want new one.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, screen size/quality, build quality (bad experiences with hinges), weight. In that order. no screen touch or 2 in 1. and numeric keyboard is not necessary but if an option have it i can take it.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Around 60-70% of the time it will be at home. so its around 6/10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14" to 15" its ok

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

it will be very casual. i think the more hardcore game i can try will be pubg/dota/csgo. And talking about editing photos probably using lightroom.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

medium settings for dota/csgo its ok for me

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    16GB Ram its priority

good touchpad because i dont use a mouse usually. SSD too.

Core i5 its ok. I prefer an intel processor for what i read some AMD have some lag when using pyhton/R and some libraries.

for my budget i think i can get 256GB SSD

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

For reference the laptop at my work is a HP Probook 640 core i5. And an option that caught my eye was something like HP Pavilion 15 (but it was 12gb ram and 15.6 screen)

Thanks for the help in advance.

I would like lots of IO ports as I would eventually be running 1-2 extra displays if I'm working at home.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am currently working on a Concept D 5 Pro, but will have to give it back to the company I am leaving. The new one gave me a budget of £1,500 (approx. $2,000) to find a good laptop/desktop solution. Not sure if there is a "Suggest A Desktop" subreddit but will look for it.

Computer Science (Engineering) Major + A casual gamer.. Please help!

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:16 PM PST

Hi! I'll be starting college this Fall and is planning to major in CS. I'll be taking Engineering courses, along with programming ones.

Right now, I have a Macbook Pro 2019 with Touch Bar but I do believe having Windows for my college would help as I heard the softwares and textbooks are made for Windows. ( I also start to dislike the mac.. due to lack of games I can play lol )

With that said here is what I am looking for:

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $1000 USD but willing to spend a few hundred more if really necessary (I plan to sell my Mac for around 900 and pay the difference)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Nope

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I do not want it to be 2-in-1. Performance > Battery Life > Build quality but I heavily prioritize both the performance and BL!

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • As long as it is not TOO thin and/or lightweight, it'll be fine.😅

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • N/A (I'll have two monitors)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Programming,Gaming, and maybe a bit of video editing (video editing as a rare hobby while the others are more frequent)

    • Visual Studio Code

    • Photoshop

    • Games: League of Legends, PUBG, Among Us, Minecraft and pretty much it.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Definitely League of Legends and PUBG. Not sure about settings and FPS... haha as long as they run smoothly (sorry I don't know much)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Reliable build quality would be nice... don't want it to accidentally snap or break whatever happens. No emphasis on any other since I'll have a wireless mouse and keyboard. I dont care if keyboard is backlit but I hope to at least customize ,,, i know some have a fixed color.

    • RAM : 16 gb or up

    • would like SSD drive (1TB if possible)

    • prefer 512 GB storage

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • thank you for the recommendations in advance..

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -yes-
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      performance over everything
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      n/a

I want to doodle in bed (if you know what I mean)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:31 PM PST

Now that I have your attention... I really just want something cheap I can use Gimp and any other digital art apps I might get myself into.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $300 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Definitely! Probably will have to be to make my budget.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Run Gimp for me and I'm good. No other priorities really

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't want something super bulky, but I'm willing to sacrifice if it makes budget

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Bigger the better

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gimp, maybe some streaming, maaaaybe some light gaming but I'm not looking to play GTA5 or anything heavy and is not a necessity.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Eh. I'm comfortable with league of legends at 30fps on all low settings. Again, not a huge deal.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'll probably buy a cheap wireless mouse and keyboard to use with it if I decide to use the tv as a monitor. So HDMI would be helpful too.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I love you and I hope you're having a wonderful day.

Looking for video editing/capture with fast rendering times. Hopefully under $2,500.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:16 PM PST

I would like to be able to capture HD video without lag, but my biggest project is that I have a huge archive of rare, one-of-a-kind VHS footage I'd like to preserve, which will require a lot of cleanup and rendering. Any ideas?

Lenovo Legion 5 15.6" i7-10750h GTX 1660ti vs Razer vs Asus

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:40 PM PST

Currently looking at this laptop at Costco:

    https://www.costco.com/lenovo-legion-5-15.6%22-gaming-laptop---10th-gen-intel-core-i7-10750h---geforce-gtx-1660ti---144hz-1080p-display---moss-green.product.100568543.html

I love the green, I feel like it sticks out. Off topic but this was the last laptop I owned that I absolutely loved, though I thought it was ugly, it was unique:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-laptop-with-intel-centrino-2-processor-technology-espresso-brown-khaki/9050055.p?skuId=9050055

Price wise on the Lenovo, what would the other options be in a similar $1k-ish price range between Razer and Asus Zephyrus.

    $1700 CAD budget/Canada

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:39 PM PST

University student in search of new laptop

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1700 CAD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really but if it's an incredibly good deal I might consider it

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life and build quality in that order. I'm not really looking for a 2-in-1. I just came from a surface book and never really used the tablet function. Will primarily be using a laptop for school work, but I would like the best performance possible. Looking to get into coding and things of that sort so want to make sure whatever I get has the potential processing power I might need.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not doing any of that. Primarily need it for basic tasks for university, although I do set up multiple VMs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't plan on gaming with the laptop

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

At least 8GB of RAM, but ideally 16 GB. SSD and higher end storage capacity. A good keyboard is important to me as I spend long periods of times typing. Display isn't the most important but I'm not looking for something with an awful display either

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Although my budget is 1700 I would prefer to stay under that, looking for the best value as well. Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

    Music production, video editing, gaming

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:14 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $2000 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Regular laptop(not a foldable tablet-like one), able to handle music production, video editing, and gaming while plugged in. My laptop will always be plugged in and I know laptop batteries suck so it doesn't matter.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15-inch or higher, but 15-inch is the sweet spot

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Music production: Ableton Live Suite(I will be running plugins and vsts) Video editing: Davinci Resolve(1080p-4K video editing and rendering) Gaming: Apex Legends, Krunker, Modern Warfare, AAA titles

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      Medium-High settings, 144+ FPS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Great build quality, no touchscreen, multiple usb inputs, possibly an SD card reader, 500GB-1TB+ SSD, nice feeling back-lit keyboard/keys. Must be able to edit videos and playback in the program without lag or skipping. Games must look good and respond smoothly. 144HZ, IPS display. Able to handle multiple music production equipment plugged in(midi keyboard, audio interface, etc). Good amount of RAM and VRAM. RTX graphics card(GTX if it's a smarter move). Decent speakers. Headphone jack a must. Maybe a high quality webcam, but not required(I'll be fine without a webcam at all).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I recently built my first desktop pc and now I need a mobile workstation. I spent about $2500 on all the components and I need something that's almost as good as it. I want a black laptop unless you can sell me on another color.

    Upgrade from Asus Q500A

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:36 PM PST

Per the title, I have a 7 year old, refurbished, upgraded RAM Q500A. I've been coding with it while running Zoom. I reach maximum stack call size more and more often, which force me to close windows and slow down by that much.

The RAM may be upgraded but the CPU is lacking. I have an option to supercharge it with better parts, but I'm not sure if that is the best option. I would rather get a newer model with better specs and parts in the Asus line. Any suggestions?
