    80-90,000 INR

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurbs maybe, if the warranty is good

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance, build quality, battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Ableton/FL Studio + VSTs

Maybe video editing later on, and maybe 3D modelling softwares (not a necessity)

Would be great if I had the option to play, no specific settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality, and preferably lots of ports (going to be using midi controllers and stuff), SSD (or SSD+HDD hybrid), ideally should be a ram slot for expansion

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was considering legion 5 but if some good laptops (i7 11th gen) are coming soon then I could probably wait.

    Thanks for the help!

Is Acer Aspire 3 better than Acer Swift 3?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:28 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      INR 45000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life is no big deal. I'm not looking for premium quality. Performance should support casual gaming. Colors to accurate!
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Don't really care, these gorilla muscles can hold anything.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      All Adobe Applications, Multiplayer FPS.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
At low graphics I expect nearly 100 in Valorant, Overwatch.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      No.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been working on my Lenovo Ideapad 110 for about 3 years now. At the moment, it's pitiful. I could compare it to an animal that NEEDS to be put down.

At the moment, with the pandemic and cesspit around it, I'm leashed onto a tight budget. I watched a lot Dave Lee to determine a cheapest best laptop I could find. I came across Acer Swift 3. I went to Amazon, it wasn't in stock but an eerily similar product was the Acer Aspire 3. It was cheaper as well and that makes me skeptical. If it's cheaper, is it downgraded?

I primarily need it for schoolwork and digital illustrating. That means, the colors need to accurate. I'm not much of a gaming geek but rather play casually with friends. The old beast that is Ideapad 110 has no GPU for gaming, making me the odd one out in my circle of homies who game.

Please note that I've been saving money all over 2020 amidst crisis to finally purchase a better laptop in 2021. I must make a good investment!

Is it worth spending $70 more for an RTX 2060 laptop?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:09 PM PST

So, here in Indonesia, you can get an Omen 15 laptop with Ryzen 5 4600H, GTX1660TI for around USD1,253 or around IDR17,600,000. However, Lenovo recently released a new variant of their Legion 5 laptop with pretty much identical specs, except with an RTX 2060 (115 W I think) and a smaller 60Wh battery compared to Omen 15's 70.9 Wh battery for around USD1324 or IDR18,600,000. Is it worth spending more for the RTX 2060 and a more mediocre battery life? Is the Omen's battery life even that good?

Both of them have 144Hz screen, 16 gigs of memory, 512 gigs SSD, your usual stuff at around that price. Thanks

I (UK) need a new work computer for no more than £800. I work for a charity so VAT can be deducted also.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:28 AM PST

I work for a Welsh arts-based charity and, in what is less than ideal timing, my laptop has packed up in the midst of this pandemic and I need a replacement. Up until this point, I've been working on a very old MacBook (2010 Macbook Pro). I am very open to switching to PC.

I've managed to earmark a total of £800 (absolute max), as I said, we are a charity too so VAT exemption and any special offers should apply!

As you'll see from the form below, my role tends to involve taking on more tech demanding tasks such as video editing and design, so would prioritise performance above all:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Absolute maximum of £800 (UK), VAT exempt (20%)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Open to refurbs, but I think shopping for used models on eBay and similar might not be worth it as I won't be able to remove the VAT easily, which will likely negate the savings

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Processing speed and Memory >>>> the rest I'm not too worried about, other than I'd like it to be relatively durable.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not especially worried about this really, as long as it can stuff it in a large rucksack from time to time.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not too important again, but nothing too small- around 15" works well.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

It's quite important that I am able to smoothly run the breadth of the Adobe products, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere and Illustrator, alongside all of the normal Microsoft stuff.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No games, sadly!

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A webcam is a must, as are some built-in speakers. Beyond that, I'm not too fussy, although I would like an HDMI out, as I do tend to plug into a projector quite regularly.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you in advance for all of your help friends, you're doing your bit to support the arts during these difficult times- I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Been trying to find a laptop that can withstand the wear and tear from an old Army Vet that isn't exactly the most kind when it comes to handling things; he can and has broken cell phones within a week of owning them if there isn't a protective case around them. Thus a standard slim laptop is out of the question. However, the major dilemma here is that he also won't use one of the rugged contractor laptops, which are usually quite strong against overzealous wear and tear. It boils down to "They look stupid.", just with far more verbose and colourful language.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
The laptop must not make excessive noise or run as hot as an oven and moderate battery life (whatever batter life fits best in my budget). I am ok with plastic build.

    • I want it to multiplayer games like Dead by Daylight and RPG like Cyberpunk 2077 at high to medium. FPS should be 30 or above. if its 30 FPS it has to be consistently 30.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
It should have enough USB A ports to plug in a KB, Mouse, external HDD2:0 Speaker and an HDMI for a monitor LAN port is ok but not necessary. the build should be good that it lasts me atleast 2 years.

A eee student looking for a new laptop

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:15 PM PST

    ◽️ Budget: 1700$ maximum

    ◽️ Country: India

    ◽️ Screen size: 15" +

◽️ Screen resolution: 1080p at least, better if more

◽️ Does battery life matter ? : yes, I need a laptop with good battery life

◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for: I'm a bachelor ee student so I'll be using it mostly for regular tasks, ee engineering software if I can hands on licenses, I use some photoshop (cs2 lol) and capture one for my photography but that isn't very important.

◽️ Weight: I will be carrying it to uni

I've been looking at a lot of models, I used to stay updated on computers but have been OOTL for the last few years, I'm thinking of getting one with a 10th gen i7, something a little good cause my previous computers were all budget models, I want to use it for my bachelors course and my masters. I need a laptop by February and I've had doubts about which laptop ranges to look at. I am looking at some think pads (t15) and also at some other models like a legion 5i which seems to have a more powerful processor, I'm not sure how much graphics processing power I'll need as photoshop and I guess ee engineering software are the most I'll use. I'm not very interested in gaming.

The thinkpad I'm looking has a variant with a core i7 10710u, integrated graphics but I doesn't come with win10, so that's 10 grand inr more, and the legion 5i has a variant with a i7 10750h and a gtx 1650. But the legion has win10 home bundled with it. Yesterday I read some articles that were saying that some models with 11th gen i5s can match some 10th gen i7s so I'm thoroughly confused now.

I'm also looking at dell latitudes and I'm not sure if I should pick a 'gaming' series laptop like the legion for better performance, or if I should get a think pad or latitude that will be more focused on durability and ergonomics.

Oh and also, the thinkpad comes with integrated graphics, or an optional mx350, and the legion with a 1650, but I dunno if these models intel graphics are enough for like electrical machine design tools.

Both of them come with 16 gb ram

Edit: it seems the legion also has a 1650 Ti upgrade for 7k inr more. Not sure what the difference between the 1650 and the 1650ti would be

    Edit 2:

    Legion 5i (25gb sdd + 1tb hdd)

    Core i7 10750H (6 cores)

    Nvidia gtx1650

    95k inr

Thinkpad t15 (integrated graphics, just a 256gb sdd):

    base price = 1,24,000 inr

    With a Core i7 10710U (1.10ghz, 6 cores) : 17,000 above the base price

    With a core i7 10610 vpro (1.8 GHz, 4 cores) :

31,500 inr above the base price

I don't know much about processors, so I don't know which is the better deal, the 10750h at that price, or one of the i7 t15 thinkpads.

The legion comes with an additional hdd, and if I get one of the T15's, I'll need to get a 1tb hdd and windows 10, so the thinkpad looks very expensive to me

I apologize for the messy post, i couldn't help it :)

    Deciding between Asus laptops

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:18 AM PST

I'm a college student in Singapore who enjoys light gaming (minecraft and binding of Isaac; don't game much though). I don't need a gaming laptop. Currently, I'm mainly looking at 2 Asus laptops: 1. Vivobook S14 S433EQ 2. Zenbook 14 UX425EA

The Nvidea GeforceMX350 of the vivobook seems slightly better than Intel Iris Xe of the Zenbook. Portability of zenbook is a little higher but I don't mind the difference at all. Battery of zenbook is 17Wh higher. I like the look of the vivobook more. The specs are pretty similar and I'm wondering if build quality of the zenbook is sufficiently better for me to pay SGD200 more for the zenbook.

While I went out today, I also saw the newest 3. hp pavilion 14 DV0017TU

It has MX450 graphics and much better sound quality, and it's only SGD50 more than the vivobook. However, I am less confident about hp's build quality, and its battery life is shorter, so I lean more towards the Asus PCs.

    Which should I get?

Deciding between 1660ti vs 2060. Is DLSS worth it?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:10 PM PST

Currently in the market for a new laptop and would like some advice. I'm using a Samsung Chromebook from 4 years ago and it is finally showing its age. Ever since the COVID hit, I have been staying at a hotel due to the pandemic and working in a high-risk unit. So I might stay put for a while. I'm currently interested in the Legion 5, and it does come with either a 1660ti or 2060. I was wondering if it is practical to pay extra for 2060 features such as DLSS. If there is another laptop recommendation that you guys recommend, please comment.

Budget (midrange?) Gaming laptop for school

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:34 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1500 SGD (might go slightly over)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance (it shouldn't become obsolete anytime soon), followed by build quality then battery life. While not absolutely necessary, it would be good if it could last around 5+ hours unplugged.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important. However, it doesn't have to be super light, just good enough for me to carry it around whenever I need to. If I have to carry around a slightly heavier laptop for a much greater performance, I wouldn't mind.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6 inches. Larger than that might be a little too big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will mostly use this for school and gaming, so for school it would be the basic Microsoft apps. As for gaming, I play CS:GO, Valorant, Roblox, and indie games. (Also, if it matters, I do video editing on Davinci Resolve 16.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Best if I can have my games at high settings, don't mind dropping to medium (or low occasionally). Having a 100+ frames per second would make me feel good, although that might be difficult to achieve. I can settle for at least 60.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I will be having online classes with this, so a webcam would be much appreciated, and bonus points if it's good. A good keyboard would be nice to have, although I do have peripherals so I am willing to give that up if absolutely necessary. Touch-screen is not required (I've heard it's not great for gaming laptop screens.)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I will be recording my gameplay on this laptop (which is why I mentioned the video editing earlier) using OBS. From experience, the recording can come out quite laggy and I believe it is because of GPU lag (or something like that, I'm not fully sure.) One huge factor is that I can record my games with a steady 60+ FPS. Also, I would very much like a sleek and professional design, I do not like bulky or overly gamery aesthetics (one or two cool stuff is fine). Finally, it would be great if there were at least three USB ports for all my peripherals.

I hope that this sub will be able to provide with some guidance as to what laptop I should get. I know this is a lot of requirements, and I hope there's a laptop that will be able to fulfill most, if not all of them. Thank you in advance!

      Not particularly important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15-16" screen

No. General work-station requirements. SAGE accounting software, Zoom, web browsing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good build quality, decent keyboard. No gimmicks such as touch-screen, finger readers etc. Optical drive is a bonus but not required.

Just looking well built and reliable laptop for office work that will last and do what is required for the price. No fancy features, no gimmicks, just a nice, well-specced laptop.
Preferably from a known brand and not one of those generic Chinese brands. After bad experiences with the build quality of Acer, I'd prefer to steer clear of them too.

    Thanks!
