    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I live in India and my budget is upto INR 75,000.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would prefer a new machine.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality is important, but not possible to avoid some plastic in my budget range. I dont anticipate long working hours without a power socket, so battery life of 3 hours would be great.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thinness is not very important, but want the weight to be below 2.4 kgs
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I would prefer anything between 14-15.6 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
My primary intention is to run MATLAB/SIMULINK and simulation softwares like COMSOL as well as programming IDEs mainly built on Eclipse platform, also will be doing some Python development using Anaconda. I would also be occassionally using Orcad -Capture,PSPICE,PCB Designer.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
60 FPS and medium graphics is sufficient for me. I usually play only FIFA, Genshin Impact and sometimes COD.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard and touchpad is essential. Do not want- optical drive, touch screen, fingerprint scanner
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Fast booting and multiple chrome windows functioning seamlessly would be great.

    Gaming Laptop US $750-$900

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:35 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      United States, $750-$900
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Absolutely, buying used from ebay or open box from best buy are top options
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance>build quality>battery life>form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      -Of no importance at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Probably the most demanding game will be CB2077, which asks for a GTX 1060
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
-Probably the most demanding game will be CB2077, which asks for a GTX 1060, roughly medium settings at 60fps is fine.

-BUT I want the laptop to play on at least 60 fps medium on the vast majority of games for the next 2 years

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A numpad would be nice but definitely not 100% necessary
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-Price/performance for the price range is the most important, all other factors can be tossed out the windows unless the effect gaming performance.

    -Don't care about ray tracing

-Probably irrelevant, but computer does not need to come with any drives, I have my own.

WHICH TO GET: Razer Blade 15 Advanced VS Gigabyte Aero 15

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:26 PM PST

So I'm looking at getting a new laptop. My biggest requirements were a 2080 super GPU and a 4k OLED screen. Most of these units are only 60Hz but I don't play a lot of FPS and things where a super high Hz is important, and if I did want to, I'd do it on my much more powerful desktop computer. Plus lets face it, at 4k, there's no way a laptop is getting over 60 on high settings anyways. So, my searching has brought me down to these two choices. Links are below, thank you in advance for any warnings or opinions you can give before I make this year long financial commitment.

    Razer Blade 15 Advanced

    Gigabyte Aero 15

    WHAT'S THE SAME

    • Same processor, the I7 10875H.
    • Same GPU, the GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q.
    • Same Hard Drive, a 1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.
    • They all have 3 USB A ports. 1 Thunderbolt 3 USBC port, 1 HDMI, 1 3.5 mm Audio Jack.
    • They both have 15.6 inch 4k OLED 60 Hz screens.
    • Both have color controllable backlit keyboards
    • Both had hd webcams. Razers is top mounted, Gigabytes is bottom mounted
    • Both have RJ45 ports, Bluetooth 5 and WIFI6.

    WHAT'S DIFFERENT

    • The Gigabyte is $400 less.
    • Razer comes with 16gb of 2933 mhz memory. Gigabyte comes with 32gb of memory of unknown speed.
    • The Razer has 2 USB 3.2 ports, and the Gigabyte has a Mini DisplayPort and an SD Card Reader (UHS-II). (not that I think ever use the mini display or card readers)
    • The Razers screen is also a Touchscreen
    • I've seen some people commenting about how hot the Razer can get, and the gigabyte seems to have significantly more ventilation. As far as I can tell, the razers only vents must be on the bottom because I don't see any on the front, sides, or back. The Gigabyte on the other hand has large vents on the rear half of each side, the entirety of the back, and a huge portion of the bottom it would appear.
    • Gigabyte comes with Windows 10 Pro instead of Home. Not sure how much of a difference this would really make for me though.
    • Gigabyte unit has a fingerprint scanner.
    • Razer has a 65WH battery Gigabyte has a 92WH battery.

Laptop with Ryzen 7 4800h + rtx 2060 + 16gb ram which one to choose?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:55 AM PST

I'm looking to get new laptop for mainly photo editing and light video editing but also to play some games like rocket league and possibly some new AAA titles with medium graphics.

I think the Ryzen 7 4800h and rtx 2060 would provide me enough power for my requirements. I have found three possible candidates and would like to hear what you guys think, which one I should go with.

First one is Lenovo Legion. Though it fails to provide me enough ram and ssd space, they space can be upgraded later, but I don't really enjoy opening laptop cases much.

    https://www.currys.ie/ieen/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-laptops/lenovo-legion-5p-15-6-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-rtx-2060-256-gb-ssd-10205989-pdt.html

Second one I found is HP Omen 15, It has the specs I look for, but I have bad taste for HP from 15 years ago when all of their machines were breaking apart in half year. Also I've heard battery life being short in Omen laptops.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-15-en0008na-GeForce-Dedicated-Graphics/dp/B0877LGCS6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ryzen%2B7%2B4800hs&qid=1610102680&refinements=p_n_feature_browse-bin%3A21740491031&rnid=182781031&s=computers&sr=1-1&th=1

And third one, Asus Zephyr with Ryzen 7 4800hs and gtx 1660ti. I've heard it having better battery life and for being a bit smaller and less weight, I'd have easier time taking it to field with me if needed. But is the 1660ti too much behind rtx 2060? And is the Asus price worth it over the HP?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Zephyrus-GA401IU-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B08JYYZ9ZT/ref=sr_1_2?crid=HU4IYIQ2OA5G&dchild=1&keywords=zephyrus+g14&qid=1610105555&s=computers&sprefix=zephyru%2Ccomputers%2C200&sr=1-2

I'd like to hear what you guys think of these three laptops and if there is other options to go for within similar price feel free to suggest.

    Brand Customer Support Recommendations

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:26 AM PST

Hows it going guys, I've found posts similar to this in the past but I'm looking for something more geared around customer service/after-sales care so wondering what shops/websites people buy from and find there to be a great customer service/warranty attached to the unit.

I've had a nightmare dealing with Lenovo Ireland directly before, eventually got it refunded after having to send it off to be fixed three times (all in about five months). Ireland is quite poor for purchase points, the likes of Curries & Argos are the norm or else you roll the dice in buying directly from the manufacturer who may not even be based too well in Ireland from what I found in dealing with Lenovo.

Curious to hear about combos like Amazon + some phone insurance sort of site you've heard good things about, or best to stick with the norm? Cheers for any advice

Best Windows/Chrome OS tablets for traveling (200-400 euros)?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 04:12 AM PST

Looking for a windows tablet. I understand that a chrome OS tablet might also work for what I need.

    Why a tablet?

So I am looking for a tablet to carry with me when I am traveling. My personal laptop is a bit heavy and I am always worried about losing it or damaging it while traveling cause it's expensive.

My android phone is sometimes very awkward to use when I want to do things like paying my rent, buying crypto, opening multiple tabs on a browser. Its just awkward and difficult with the android version of the browsers. I need a windows tablet with a full desktop browser to do these things. I want an antivirus or malwarebytes running in the background to protect me from weird things. I am not looking to spend a lot of money since I have already spent a lot on my laptop. I prefer something between 200-400 euros but can go upto 500 euros if needed. From what I see a chrome os tablet may also work but am not sure.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

Prefer it cheap because I already have an expensive laptop. 200-400 euros. Can go up to 500 euros if really needed. Buying in the Netherlands.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good performance. Full Desktop browser. Prefer a touchscreen with a keyboard. Battery life. Then build quality.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Preferrably lightweight. I need it for traveling.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    10 inches or more.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Chrome desktop browser with like 15 tabs open. I use text editors, pdf readers, vlc player and dropbox. Avira antivirus(or a good equivalent) and malwarebytes.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play video games on emulators such as gba emulator but I can live without games while traveling.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good performance, keyboard and a full desktop browser.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Like I said earlier I prefer something not very expensive cause I wont be using that tablet that much. I prefer good performance and a full desktop browser.

I dont like Acer because I had a very bad experience with their laptops in the past.

Help me to choose between Dell Inspiron 5402 or Asus Zephysus G14

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:43 PM PST

Planning to buy laptop and I'm having a hard time what to choose.

    My first option would be: Dell Inspiron 5402 ( platinum silver ) / i7 1165G7 / 8gb DDR4 3200 / 512gb M.2 PCIe NVMe / Nvidia GeForce MX330 2gb / Win 10

Is that model okay? Unfortunately, that's the only Dell available in our city. Been messaging shops for months now. Unfortunately there's a shortage of stocks because of online classes and work from home due to pandemic.

Since I'm looking for other option aside from Dell, been also eyeing this:

    Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II-HE058T (Black) 14-inch FHD 120Hz Ryzen 7 4800H/8GB/512GB SSD/4GB GTX1650Ti/Windows 10

Not gonna use it for gaming tho, just for work and other stuff like watching Netflix, etc. Gonna use ArcGIS and maybe a bit of AutoCAD tho not a heavy rendering work. Is it a good buy or an overkill?

I'm aiming for speed & battery life, and hopefully I can use in the long run that can lasts up to many years.

    Laptop

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 03:08 AM PST

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: £600, in UK/Ireland so can also buy in euro c.€650

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, would prefer to be buying new if possible but definitely open to refurbs if source is reliable

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Mostly for home use so battery life not hugely important. Performance most important, need something that will last.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Just minimum 14 inch screen

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None of the above

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing of note here. Just your standard keyboard/touchpad needed

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will mostly be used by someone who is not very tech savvy. They have bought very cheap in the past and it ends up bricked after a year. They would probably overpay for something that does far more than they need if they were left to it by themselves. Main tasks are just using internet for emails, netflix, YouTube, social media. As I said before really looking something that is quick, in terms of initial start up and opening programs etc. So would still be looking for something above what might be considered the minimum level to do these tasks

    Thanks guys :)

      $1300
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Nah, looking for new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance, build quality, battery life, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I would prefer for it to be less in both categories. I just don't want a massive gaming laptop
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6 in
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      SolidWorks(CAD), MATLAB, Photoshop, light-medium gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Valorant, Overwatch, Destiny 2. At least 100 fps, medium-low, Looking for at least an Nvidia 1650
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Must be touchscreen, I do online math tutoring. This makes it difficult I know.....
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
at least 512 gb storage. I don't game like crazy, but when I do I would like my gaming experience to feel smooth. This is my school/gaming laptop

If finding a laptop with a decent graphics card AND touchscreen AND at $1300 is too difficult (I did a shit ton on research and found the YOGA C940, but decided to wait until cyber Monday and the PRICE WENT UP $300) I would also be willing to buy a decent gaming laptop, with better graphics card than Nvidia 1650, not touchscreen, but not with a super gamer-esque looking build. And also buy some sort of drawing tablet to fulfill the touchscreen need, if the laptop + drawing tablet was under 1300. I found an OSU drawing tablet on amazon for 30,.

I have currently have an Dell Inspiron 15 7501 https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-Touchscreen-GeForce-Windows/dp/B0897X5DTP/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Dell+Inspiron+7000+1650&qid=1610165840&sr=8-3

Which fulfilled all my needs perfectly, but recently the audio has been having problems, and a few other minor but annoying things have been messing up. If a clean reset of windows 10 does not work, then I am considering either returning and getting the same model, OR look into a different laptop. Which is what this post is for. I have until Jan 31 to return this laptop for a full refund.

    Yes please

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build Quality, Performance, Battery Life, and lastly Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not Important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Minimum of 15.6", and like the idea of 17"+

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light Photo editing (just hobbyist stuff)/ Old school game emulation sounds nice but not necessary

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

GC/ N64 type shizz (PUBG on low settings is about as hardcore as I could see getting)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good Keyboard, Good I/O (seems like I've always got external everything clogging up the USB ports), and USB-C would be nice but not a must have

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is for home use/ small business. Think YouTube, and spreadsheets. I've kind of fallen in love with the cult of Lenovo here- and am coming from Dells and HPs. Open to anything reliable, but have been looking seriously at w541, p50, and less seriously m6800, and Zbooks. I'd love to stay in my stated price range, and am not scared to break out the tools for upgrades/maintainence if theres a cost benefit. I should also say- Im a longtime lurker, first time poster, so I hope this is properly formatted and makes sense. Thanks much in advance!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A french keyboard, illuminated, with a keypad

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Silent! I'm tired to hear the jet fans of my old xps.

Need help deciding on a thin and powerful laptop. Done with ASUS.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 06:14 PM PST

My old asus ROG Strix G14 died and I'm needing a new laptop. Anything but an asus product. I have a strict budget of 1000 USD/CAD. I've been looking into eluktronics, and I would like to be able play some AAA titles at low to medium settings, plus some general tasks. Thoughts?

Looking for a good multitasking gaming laptop

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:45 PM PST

My uses: Streaming games, video editing, 3d modeling, heavy chrome usage (lots of tabs), and VR on occasion. I have 1.5k Gb of storage on my current computer, so preferably that or more. I don't care about look/style that much as long as it has a full size keyboard. A 2070 would be cool, but 2060 should fit my needs. Not super picky on screen, and anything 75hz+ and I'm happy. My price point is around $1300 USD but I am willing to go up to around 1400.

I have been thinking about this g14 I really like the processor (ryzen 4900hs) but I might want to buy more storage.

I am much more familiar with the desktop market, and don't know exactly where to look for laptops. So any help is appreciated!

    Edit: spelling

Bought two laptops for comparison. Need some advice to make a final decision (Dell vs Lenovo)

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:38 PM PST

Hey guys! Before getting in the market to buy a new laptop, I owned a HP Pavilion laptop that served me well for 11 years throughout college. It eventually gave out and now I'm deciding between these two:

    Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2 in 1---------- i5 Processor/8GB of Ram

    And

Lenovo Ideapad Slim 7 ----------i7 Processor / 12 GB of Ram

I originally bought the Inspiron until a tech guy at a repair shop recommended me the Lenovo. Decided to buy the two and make the final choice which one I should stick with after assessing both of them.

I love the Dell's touch-screen and ability to turn the screen all the way around but I also like Lenovo's specs. I've also taken both of their weights/thinness as big priorities since I'm constantly traveling and need to bring my laptop everywhere.

For some background, besides the everyday stuff like browsing/youtube I own two e-commerce businesses that are on Wix and Squarespace. These sites used to crash my old HP. Will Lenovo's specs make a huge difference considering this?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Looking for the best gaming laptop in a budget.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $900 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used? Not preferred, but will accept

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance first, build quality second, battery is meh. It will probably never leave home.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, but I'm not mad at a bug screen.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will do some light gaming. Nothing on Cyberpunk level, but some fairly demanding games. And some editing of my Twitch streams.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't need to play PS4 era or later games. It'd be nice if I could play GTA 4 on 60 FPS, but it'd be cool with a super stable 30 as well.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Minimum of 16GB ram, 12 if possible. A backlit keyboard and reliable wifi if possible. My desktop was pretty good at the time when I bought it, but it's just old enough to NOT have an HDMI port. So if that's on there, it's a win.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

None that I can think of. Again, I will mainly use this laptop to retro game and possibly edit Twitch videos. I am willing to go up to $1,000 USD for budget, but I would prefer to stay under $900 to pay for warranty and stuff.
