$600-$800 14" general Use Laptop [USA]

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 05:09 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

My GF's parents are looking at getting a computer. They would like a laptop for general use. Google searches, spreadsheets, tax software, photos, etc. Nothing too advanced.

I want them to have at least a 14" screen with FHD (1080p). I am leaning towards Lenovo because they typically have a better keyboard than most. I don't have too strong of a preference, but Intel would be my first choice.

I think a 14" FHD display, 8GB RAM, and at least a 256GB SSD are required.

So far I have found this Lenovo (AMD):

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkbook-series/ThinkBook-14-Gen-2-AMD/p/XXTBXTMA400

Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

    General use/ School

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:12 AM PST

I'd like to get a new laptop to replace my old Acer Chromebook 15 that finally gave up( and by that I mean my brother threw it across the yard in a puddle). I work full time and was considering using a program my employer offers to go back to school and finish my degree online however my brother had other plans. My budget is about 500 to 650 USD. I'd prefer a windows laptop but I'm fine with a chromebook as well for extra value. I will mainly be using this for school work so it doesn't have to be too powerful. I do watch a lot of movies though so a good 13 to 15 inch screen is preferred. Under 13 inches isn't really acceptable. Its a bonus if I can buy it on Walmart.com(not from a 3rd party seller) as I do get a 10% discount from there. Thanks for the help.

I want to buy a laptop for my girlfriend

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:45 PM PST

I want to buy a laptop for my girlfriend, she'll mostly use it for gaming. Her laptop now is abysmal.

She mainly wants to play Sims 3 and Sims 4 but, she said she also wanted to get into MMOs. I'm not sure which ones but probably a strategy game. She doesn't care for anything with shooting or horror. She mostly like games like stardew valley and terraria. She would love to try an open world game that's similar to breath of the wild, but I'm not sure.

The main thing is that it should at least play Sims 4 in high settings with mods.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance > build quality > battery life > form(no fancy stuff, just a solid notebook)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important, like 4/10 maybe
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6", 17" might be also ok.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Playing a lot of modern and graphic/performance heavy games, like Doom Eternal. Preferably on high settings, so VRAM should be at least 4GB

    I´ve been looking at:

    Lenovo Legion Y540 (Notebooksbilliger.de/LenovoY540)

    Dell Inspiron 15 (Notebooksbilliger.de/Inspiron15)

    Monster Abra (Amazon.de/Monster_Abra)

I´m also not sure if i should aim for Core i7 or if Core i5 could be good enough(i think the store lets you upgrade the specs if you want to)...

Any enlightenment or alternative suggestions would be welcome.

I have a good Desktop PC, so the Laptop would complementary/for travel (have to spend some time in the middle of nowhere soon)

I live in Germany, so deals outside EU wont be viable for me.

    Laptop for CS study

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:40 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    €1000 in the Netherlands.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery Life has to be decent, I think a minimal of 9 hours is good? I'm not familiar with what is a good length. I might need to use my laptop on campus for a few hours without charger. Other than that, I want to be able to run a kali VM (sometimes multiple) and to be able to run (multiple) scans and tools at the same time smoothly. I want the laptop to run fast. I need to do Bug Bounty hunting, pentesting, CTFs, coding, occasionally edit a youtube tutorial and Photoshop. No Mac and no Chromebooks.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

5/10, not important, but lighter is always nice.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Occasional gaming, limited use of Adobe Photoshop, simple video editing such as trimming with VideoPad or something like that.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Rainbow Six Siege (60 FPS), Star Wars KOTOR (anything will do), Prison Architect (60 FPS).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

An ethernet port, HDMI port and at least 2 USB ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

In one year I'm gonna study CS at a university. I'm looking to replace my old laptop right now. I do not play any really heavy games, so I don't require some insane gaming PC. Thanks in advance! Sorry if the form looks somewhat weird, this was a pain to get right on mobile.

€1500 laptop for programming in western Europe

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:04 PM PST

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**My budget is €1500 euro, but if the suggestion is worth it I'm willing to go slightly higher
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**No
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**The laptop should be durable from bumps as I'll be traveling with it. Good performance is a must for uninterrupted workflow, and oftentimes multitasking between different browsers and development software. I'll have access to a power plug most of the time but a decent battery that lasts at least 3-4 hours on the go is preferable.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**I prefer not to have a laptop that's too bulky as I'll be traveling with it, but if the specs outweigh the weight I'm willing to make an exception.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**Screen size in inches: N/A - Screen resolution: minimum of 1920x1080; higher would be nice to have for webdevelopment/graphic design
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**I plan to dual boot Linux and Windows. I mostly run (multiple) node.js servers, mariadb/postgresql, pgAdmin. I'm going to use Android studio as well. I'm planning to dive into C++ so it should be able to run Visual Studio and have decent compile time. Photo/video editing capacity would be nice to have but not a priority. I'm also looking to play around with VM's but this is not too important.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**I may do some casual gaming, but seldomly so. It's not important for this laptop.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**A good keyboard is important as I'll be using the laptop mainly to write code. I'll be traveling with it so the build quality should be durable but not too heavy. FP reader is nice to have but not necessary. Monitor and it's colors need to be of good quality.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** The Lenovo Thinkpad P14s (AMD variant) caught my eye. It seems to be almost exactly like the T14 but the P14s is cheaper and comes with a larger SSD out of the box. I've used the T480 for a small time frame before and really liked it, hence why I'm considering to get a Thinkpad for myself. Although I've read that Thinkpads are notorious for having bad monitors... Another option I'm weighing is to get a Macbook for iOS dev but the chances are slim as the spec to price ratio is much higher than with Windows laptops.

That being said, if you can recommend me nice workstations I'll be super glad.

Edit: Sorry for the ugly formatting. For some reason it messed up and I cant seem to get it right.

    Professor is In Zoom

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:33 PM PST

    Hello all,

My community college is too cheap to buy me a new laptop and my current one is biting the dust. I regularly record lectures and do Web-ex /Zoom. I need something before this one hears me talk about writing a midterm and decides to crash.

    Form:

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    $600

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?
    No

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance, battery life, build quality, 2- in -1

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?
I have shoulder issues and have to carry this in my backpack so light is key. Ideally no more than 5 lbs.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    No smaller than 14 inch.

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
So I am recording lectures through yuja. I know for sure I need a built-in camera. I don't do a huge amount of editing, but there is some. I have a headset so the mic can be avg. As far as games. Sims, so something that can handle origin and I would like to play some rpg and overwatch (casually) on steam with discord at some point.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I guess 60 fps would do because of my budget. I'd love to play cyberpunk on a pc instead of xbox (glitchy as it is) , but I can be ok with Assassin's Creed, Borderlands, Dragonage, Fallout (not 76).

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I don't care about backlite keys or touch screen. I don't know what qualifies as a good keyboard for laptops because they all hurt my wrists after a time. (goals are to get a mechanical brown but that's later)I really need a computer that has multiple usb ports and an hdmi port so I can use a separate mouse. keyboard, and second screen for those long grading nights. I also need something that is not delicate as a flower. It is going to ride around in my backpack.

·Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I save a ton of papers and may need to store videos for my classes, but I have an external hard drive, so I am not sure that matters.

I am willing to add memory etc. later, I just can't afford it now and my current laptop is about to eat it.

    Thanks in advance for advice/help

Looking for a gaming laptop between $300-$700

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:57 AM PST

Looking for a good laptop that could run most of the games on Xbox Game pass for around the price range i mentioned. This would be my first gaming laptop as i have always played on the xbox one. The best one I found so far was a lenovo Ideapad L340 that was going for $700. Is there a better one thats at this price range or cheaper?

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 300-700 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used? Im open to refurbished if its a big discount but probably new

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Average or better battery life, good enough build quality for xbox game pass games

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important to me

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inches and up

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None, just mostly gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Low to high, as long as its at least 30-60 fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent enough touchpad

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I dont need to run the AAA games in the 60+ fps range. I am used to playing on current gen consoles so 30+ fps is good for me. Sorry if i get anything wrong i am not used to discussing specs

16gb Ram, i7 or good i5. 512 GB SSD is minimum. < 2kg / 4,4lbs. Dark colors please ! Black or grey, if silver at least black keyboard.

Also, I'm very interested in trying Hackintosh so a config that allows it would be ideal.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Laptop recommendations for price range around $1500

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:36 PM PST

Hello! I have recently graduated college and landed a job, so I finally have some spending money and want to upgrade my laptop. My most intensive goal is to keep in touch with roommates via video games (need to run star wars battlefront 2, maybe cyberpunk and a more recent assassins creed), and things like that. Beyond the video games, I'm not as interested in browsing and streaming since I started work, but I want to have no problems streaming vids with decent video quality (can't give you more details beyond wanting 1080p or better). I have has a history with ASUS which has been good for me, but no real brand loyalty beyond that. My current laptop is an ASUS ZenBook UX305UA. My price ceiling is $1500, but I can be swayed if a bit more will get me a better one. If possible, I like to get an upgrade every 4-5 years for what that matters.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~$1500, U.S.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Nope
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life doesn't matter, will be close to a charger 95% of the time. Performance is important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Don't care.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A, but nothing too big.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      As mentioned in the post.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      As mentioned in the post.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
No touch screen, nothing specific otherwise.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      N/A

Thank you so much for any advice.

Best laptop for gaming/Adobe Premier Pro? (Budget $200-$500)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:39 AM PST

    Hello, MisterMagorium here,

Long time redditor, first time poster.

I am a college student looking for a good laptop for creating and editing sports highlights that doesn't break the bank. The two laptops that I currently own (ASUS X551M and Acer Chromebook) do not possess enough RAM (looking for something above 4 GB). I also play NR2003 in my spare time, so I am in search of a laptop that can run also run game without the sudden FPS drops.

I've heard good things about the ACER Aspire E15. But I'm wondering if there are other laptops out there that are just as powerful and not super expensive. Any help is appreciated.

Architectural Work/Light Gaming Laptop BUDGET: $1800-2000 AUD

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:51 PM PST

Hey everyone! Thanks for looking at my post, i'm in need of some help finding a reliable and high performing laptop for the conclusion of my studies and entrance into the workforce, any help would be much appreciated!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'm not entirely sure if what i'm looking for will be in the price range i currently have, but an ideal range atm would be between $1800AUD to an absolute maximum of $2300AUD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would very much prefer new, but i'm also open to other suggestions!
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance>Build Quality>Battery Life>Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not the most important, but if I have two suggestions of the same/similar specs, I would opt for the lighter.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6" ideally, im not really fussed though.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
YES! As my work is essentially architectural design and urban planning the programs can be quite heavy. Programs include: Autodesk Revit/Maya/AutoCAD, Sketchup, Lumion, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign. Sometimes a few at the same time!
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I think that I would generally have all my games on my current desktop to play, but I may do some light gaming in my downtime playing most trending games or mostly Minecraft/Rocket League/COD So if it can handle those well at med to high graphics that'd be sweet!
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Not necessarily, just good performance and reliability.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've generally done all of my Uni work on my current desktop, and now at the end of my degree moving into the workforce I believe that portability will be almost necessary. I have an adequate knowledge on computers but i've been completely out of the loop with laptops, so if my budget is too low please let me know and show me some suggestions so i know what to save for! Thanks for reading this far through, i appreciate it.

    $500-$800 general use laptop

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:38 PM PST

My five year old HP Envy 17 is on its last legs, so before it dies completely I need to get a new one. I'm looking for a laptop with a larger, higher quality screen that will be able to run photoshop and games like Skyrim and Fortnite. Besides that I would only be using it for schoolwork. I would prefer it have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a few USB ports, and a disc drive. Thanks for any help!

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:21 PM PST

Which one of these i should go for, if my priority is gaming? Lenovo ideapad has Ryzen 5 4600, Gtx 1650 ti while the Acer Nitro version that I can afford has i5 10300H, Gtx 1650 ti..

Strict Budget of 750$, Need a good portable windows machine that can run solidworks and very light gaming

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:37 PM PST

I'll try to make this as short as possible, I recently sold my MacBook Pro 2019 in order to get a windows machine to run CAD and other engineering related programs. I sold my MacBook for 650$. I do not want to spend too much extra money on top of the 650 and hence I am limiting myself to 750$. I am very confused as to what laptop to buy with all the options out there at this price point. I would love to have some suggestions and maybe user perspectives on what you guys own or recommend based on my needs.

    Scared I have buyer's remorse

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:33 PM PST

I bought this Gateway laptop for $811 yesterday. I have been looking for a laptop around this price that acts as a good companion device for my custom built desktop PC.

The gaming performance seems good, however the SSD seems a little slow and the fans are unbearably loud during gameplay. I wanted to ask if I missed out on another laptop within this price range (no more than $850) or if I really got the best value for my money here. Maybe I can get used to it as long as it's quiet when web browsing.

Computer science student in need of a laptop. 14’ or less, powerful, good battery

I'm a computer science student looking for a new laptop. I would appreciate some recommendations for laptops with the above specifications being my main goal. My budget is about 1000 US dollars but willing to go a bit over if necessary. What has worked for you?

Looking for something I can put two HDDs in (using an ODD caddy) with a decent CPU and memory upgradable to 16GB

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:58 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Looking to spend less than $700 USD, ordering from the US. Ideally less than $500, as I'll be spending a bit on upgrades right off the bat.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Absolutely — preferably refurbished or used. A skeleton computer with no drives and no RAM would be even better.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality and repairability above all else. Standard laptop form factor with no touch screen. It will often be used more or less like a desktop, so battery life and weight do not matter much if at all.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

No care whatsoever — I'm looking for a tank of a laptop, probably something old.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Under 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming for computer vision (in Ubuntu) and remote connecting to a more powerful computer for everything else. Ideally something with a decent CPU (4-6 core, 64bit, 2GHz+) and the capability to go up to 16GB of RAM.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not gaming, integrated GPU is perfect

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

M.2 SSD (boot) + 2.5" drive bay + ODD bay. The plan is to install 2x 1TB HDDs and have them mirrored, so I would do that by replacing the ODD with a 2.5" drive caddy.

Repairable — I don't expect anyone to dig into this for me, but an independently replaceable DC-IN port and IO boards would be awesome. If you just disregard this point, I'll look into it myself based on any suggestions.

4 cores or more, 2.0GHz plus and 64 bit. Celeron / i3 / i5 / AMD something or other — whatever meets those three requirements.

Any amount of RAM by default as long as it can be upgraded to 16 or more. To keep the price down, having the device ship with less or even none would be ideal.

    No touch screen

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

What I'm looking for is going to be heavy and possibly a bit old. The very first thing I'm going to do is remove the HDD, drive bay, and RAM. Then install 2x Toshiba MQ drives (one via drive caddy), 16GB of RAM, and install Ubuntu on it. A computer that ships with no RAM and no drives would be perfect, as I intend to change it so much immediately anyways.

I work on a lot of computers for work, but I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to knowing what's out there. The dual HDD requirement has made it a bit difficult to search for, as it seems like there's not a ton of overlap (if any) between computers that are M.2 + SATA drive capable and ones that have an ODD bay. I know there are ton of little details, the computer I'm looking for may not even exist at any price range. I appreciate any ideas, even if they don't quite fit in every way! Thanks!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    7/10

Im looking to play Java Minecraft with Mods and the FPS to be able to run that.

    • Any specific requirments such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

good keyboard for sure, definitely reliable build quality, touch screen and abfinger print reader do not matter to me. Classic keyboard with scroll pad for finger

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The main things to note are that I want 16GB of RAM, and a good graphics card such as a 1660 graphics card. Dont want it to overheat, and definitely need a decent amount of storage such as a TB.
