After two months of troubleshooting, I finally have a working PC! Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:28 AM PST After securing a 3070 on launch day, I inevitably used up all my luck. My first build would randomly repost. I tried everything within my limited understanding of PCs to troubleshoot. Swapped PSU's and MOBO's, ran memtest86, reinstalled windows countless times. Even had a buddy send me a separate SSD with windows installed and the latest 3070 driver. After 2 months, I finally realized that paired with Kernel power 41 was a WHEA error detailing a Cache Hierarchy error with my Ryzen 5 3600. I RMA'd that immediately and AMD sent me a replacement. So far I've had no issues for the past day. Gonna hold my breath for the next week and hope my build doesn't explode, haha! Edit: A little clarification. When I say that the Kernel Power 41 error is "paired" with a WHEA error, this means both errors would occur within 2-5 seconds of each other. I'd get a black screen repost situation. When I'd get back into windows, event viewer would report the Critical Kernel Power error, and then the WHEA logger error. This stands for Window Hardware Error Architecture, and it's a framework designed to alert if a piece of fundamental hardware is faulty. For Me the details of my error were this: "A fatal hardware error has occurred. Component: Processor Core. Error source: Machine Check Exception. Error Type: Cache Hierarchy. And then it would list which Core was experiencing the issue. While I don't know 100% how a CPU functions, I know that Cache Hierarchy is fundamental to the successful function of the CPU itself. I explained this exactly to AMD and they approved the RMA without further questions. I appreciate everyone's comments and Silver awards too! Anyone who bought 5600x, if you can spare it change your cpu cooler Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:36 AM PST Get a cheap 150-180w TDP cooler like ID-cooling SE-224-XT, Hyper 212, Cryorig H7, seriously any sub 20USD tower cooler and you'll see drastic improvement in temperatures. I went from 80C on full load to 56-60C. Edit: there's a lot naysayers in this post. Take a look at this: https://youtu.be/JkoULK8crzU or this: https://youtu.be/D-Q4dlFtAeA My casing, fan setup, orientation etc doesn't matter. You're missing the point. I'm saying that with the same setup minus the cpu cooler, I'm getting a reduction of ~20C on the same load and it's quieter to boot. Here's the before and after yes it isn't perfect but you can draw the conclusion yourself. This post is solely talking about reduction in temps after changing the stock cooler. You guys are really taking things out of context. There's nothing in the original OP talking about throttling, performance etc. I don't have answers about benchmarks, performance, boost etc. AGAIN SOLELY ABOUT TEMPERATURES [link] [comments]

Console to PC is 1000 percent worth it Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:46 AM PST So I built my first pc a month ago and before I was playing on ps4. Let me just say that upgrading to pc is completely worth it. From the building experience, which was surprisingly fun to playing games on it at 1440p 144fps is just a much better experience than playing on console. I still use my ps4 for exclusives like the spiderman games and nba 2k and fifa but I play all other games on pc such as rocket league, warzone, valorant and occasionally fortnite(only creative). If you are thinking about switching to pc and u can afford it, go for it. Specs of my PC: Ryzen 5 5600x CPU Asus TUF Gaming X570 Plus Mobo XPG 16gb 3600mhz RGB RAM MSI GAMING X TRIO RTX 3070 GPU EVGA 650GQ PSU Cooler Master H500 Case Cooler Master Sickleflow 120 fan x1 [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:25 PM PST I built a PC recently with only one part missing: the GPU. I regret not getting the 3060 Ti, so I've been planning to wait for the 3060 and snag it on launch. Rumors are saying that they will not have an 8 GB model, rather a 6GB and a 12GB. The standard for gaming these days seems to be 8GB because that's what most cards have. Does this mean that 6GB will be a bad buy? If so, just how bad will it be? In other words, if a game is optimized for 8GB VRAM and I only have 6GB, how bad will the performance penalty be? Would it be a minor difference or could it make a game unplayable? P. S. If you're wondering at what resolution, I do mean to ask this question generally. I have a 4K monitor, but with a 3060 (its not released yet so this is speculation) I presume not everything will run well at 4K or 1440p so I would have to scale down. So my question will apply to each of the resolutions. EDIT: What about for someone who isn't necessarily playing the latest and greatest games, but also plays games from a few years back? I've been out of the scene for years so I've got some catching up to do! [link] [comments]
New SSD marked "not for retail sale" Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:31 AM PST Bought a new Samsung 860 Evo for my laptop's 2.5" expansion slot and as the title says, it says "not for retail sale" on the box. Any ideas if this matters /why that's the case? Purchased from Amazon, the part number is MZ-76E500 Thanks in advance! Edit: thanks for all your advice, it's much appreciated! Drive is now installed and working fine. Had to cannibalise my old laptop as it didn't come with screws to secure it, but all good 😬 [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:48 AM PST Hello, I used to build a lot and love the experience of it all, however, I am no longer a fan of waiting on postage and would like to see if its possible to build an entire rig at a microcenter from one visit. I haven't built a rig since the GTX760 was released so its been a while, and my ADHD fitted with impulsiveness and impatience demands its time to build again but I would hate to wait on shipping. So my question is, could I walk into any microcenter and be able to put all the parts I need in a cart and be good? Unlike bestbuy where they don't sell all the components etc.. Closest microcenter to me is 4 hours away and I'm ready to make that drive haha. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:19 AM PST I'm buying a used 1060 off my buddy but he's had it so long he can't remember if it's 3gb or 6gb. Is their anyway I can tell without hooking it up to a pc ? [link] [comments]
How do I go about installing this cpu cooler onto my motherboard? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:22 AM PST For some reason, the retention hooks on this cooler are unable to be clipped onto the standoffs. Do I need to apply more force or add spacers beneath the standoffs? Edit: https://imgur.com/a/fxiIefy Update: managed to successfully install the cooler! I clipped it on one side, and exerted quite a bit of force on the other. Cooler works well. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:02 AM PST Hi ! So i just finished building my pc and my cpu is overheating like crazy. I have tested it in 2 games only: Warzone = 83°C - 87°C / Cyberpunk 2077 = 78°C - 84°C. I've tried undervolting by 0.0500v and the temps only got down by 1 or 2 degrees and I've also tried re-pasting, still no difference. CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: RTX 3060ti Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Max Plus (I've updated the bios and i was thinking it might be an issue from that, but i'm not sure) PSU: (I don't remember the brand) 750W 80+ Gold RAM: HyperX 2x8 gb 3200mhz Storage: SSD 512gb Gammix And the cooler of the CPU is the stock Wraith Stealth. Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:04 PM PST After installing a new power supply (550W to 750W) and graphics card (MSI RTX 3070 SUPRIM X) I booted my computer and it booted just fine. After hiding cables away and putting my panels back I got it set back up on my desk, but this time when it booted the debug light flashed on and my fan lights didn't come on in my case but they still ran. I went to install the latest driver for the 3070, and found I wasn't able to open it after it downloaded and I couldn't even get into my file explorer. A few seconds later I blue screened and when it rebooted it tried doing a disk recovery or something like that. Once I re-installed my old card (EVGA GTX 1080 FTW), my computer still booted with an initial debug light flash (it never did this before today) and my 2TB HDD won't show up anymore, but I was able to get into windows so that's something. I'm really lost as to what is wrong here between the 3070, the new PSU, my HDD (I'm booting off of a SSD), or if I touched the wrong spot somewhere in my journey of upgrading today. Is there any way to save my hard drive? And am I going to have to RMA my card? I'm pretty confident that I wired everything right with the new power supply, I've never known of anything special that needed to be done with hard drives.

Posted: 29 Dec 2020 11:30 AM PST Looking to upgrade my PC but can't decide if it's worth upgrading my mobo. I want WiFi & BT but can't decide whether or not to just get a card or upgrade to an x570 with wireless. Also imagine the extra m.2 slot will be useful in the future... I'll be keeping the 5900x for a couple of years so I won't be needing an AM5 socket for a while. Current Spec -> (Upgrade Spec) CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 -> (Ryzen 9 5900x) Cooler: Wraith -> (Corsair H100i) Mobo: B450 Tomahawk Max -> (Aorus Ultra x570??) Ram: 32gb (8x4) 3200mhz Patriot Viper DDR4 GPU: Powercolor Red Dragon 5700xt -> (6800xt) Storage: Crucial P1 1TB SSD PSU: Cooler Master MWE 550w -> (Corsair CXF 750W) Thoughts? Advice for/against? Recommend a different X570 board? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Best gaming monitor at around 500$? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:45 PM PST Hi all, I came here to ask for some help since my internet searches seem to be all over the place in regards to this one. I've just built a top end pc running a 3080 and a ryzen 5900x, now I really want a proper gaming monitor to go along with that, but I am seriously struggling on what to go for. I can't spent the crazy amounts they ask for a Predator or whatever, so was thinking around 500? Then my main issue is that I would really prefer to have something above 27 inch, but it seems from all my searches that at the moment this is tricky to find? Of course it needs to be 1440p at the minimum, since there doesn't seem to be still any good 4k gaming monitors that are remotely affordable. Or maybe there are? If you guys could let me know a few of the best options I can find atm I would appreciate very much, really lost on this one.. Thank you in advance. PC completely dead after CPU cooler swap Posted: 29 Dec 2020 09:10 AM PST This is a fun one. I changed out the CPU air cooler on my PC. I did re-seat the CPU during the process just to make sure it hadn't wiggled loose while I was removing the old cooler. Everything went smoothly. Put it back together, press power and...nothing. no beep, no lights, just nothing. *Power cable is plugged into PSU, plugged into the wall, power strip is on, PSU power switch is on *Tried re-seating all of the power cables to Mobo *Tried shorting the power switch puns with a screwdriver Even if I did somehow damage the CPU during the install, the mobo should still light up, right? Wtf happened? Did the PSU just suddenly/coincidentally die? It is a 3 month old Super Flower Leadex III. Mobo is ASRock B550M Pro-4, CPU R5 3600, Oloy Warhawk 3600 2x8GB, ID Cooling SE234 ARGB cooler [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:11 PM PST So I put in some new RAM and graphics card and me being stupid I didn't seat the RAM properly and it began to smoke. I immediately turned off the power and after moving the RAM around to other slots the PC has booted with all data and parts intact My main concern is everything seems too perfect, did I do some damage or did I get very lucky? First pc build hard to boot and dies randomly during use Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:47 PM PST Hello everyone! Having some issues with my first pc build currently. Pretty much whats happening is whenever I press the power button, the CPU debug light on the motherboard will flash and the fans will just barely start and stop. In order to get the system to actually fully boot I have to press the power button on and off a few times and it will eventually boot, almost like you're starting a lawn mower. Even leaving the computer with power for a few minutes while its acting up it will eventually fully boot. After a while of use it will just die completely and repeat the cycle of the CPU debug and fans twitching. I've checked all my connections, reset cmos, and everything else I can think of. Cpu is a i5 6600k in an msi z270 a pro motherboard with a GTX 1050. CPU, motherboard, and GPU are all leant to me by friends till I can get my ryzen cpu and 3070. All were verified to work and the cpu/mobo were just pulled out of his system that same day before going into mine. [link] [comments] |
