    Rant on Lenovo

    Rant on Lenovo

    Rant on Lenovo

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:06 PM PST

I'm basically pasting the complaint email I sent to Lenovo, but I wanted this to gain as much attention as I could. My blood is boiling from the blatant mistreatment I've received from Lenovo and their laughable attempts at customer service.

I'm 22, a young professional who joined the workforce in September after graduating from college this year. I bought a Lenovo Yoga c740, a decision I didn't take lightly as my first "big boy" investment. Two reasons for buying the laptop was to replace my ol' reliable that while getting me through college was most definitely on its last legs and the fact that I wanted a quality device built for portability and performance.

I got the Yoga c740 14" in July and loved the laptop from day one, so impressed and in awe at its 2-in-1 features. It was solid for two months, mind you I didn't use it for anything too intensive just study and then later work. Bit of gaming on the side that it didn't handle too well, sending the fan into overload but it was my laptop, I felt justified in spending close to a grand on something and was happy with my choice having spent weeks teethering around which device to pick.

In September, my mood quickly shifted. It was a Monday morning, my second week of work and I was settling in to get logged in. I had used the laptop the night before to study for the CFA exam I hope to be sitting at some point in the future but that's not the point right now. The laptop wouldn't turn on. My shiny, spanking new laptop wouldn't turn on despite only being two months old. Of course I was anxious, panicked about not being able to log into my new job, so I rang the Lenovo customer support asap, and was greeted by zero empathy. Admittedly I was probably not in the nicest of moods, but the service rep acted as if I had shot her cat, she had no patience whatsoever acting as if I had took a hammer to the device for the sake of it, condemning me for being unable to reset the device after it wouldn't turn on from several attempts of holding the power button for different lengths of time or using the keyhole option on the back. Begrudgingly, the rep recommended the best course of option was to send the device in for repair, shipping it to their technicians with a turnaround of 15 working days. 15. I reluctantly accepted as really what choice did I have, I was already an hour late for work. Desparately I kept retrying every attempt to reset the device, eventually deciding to run to the nearest corner computer shop to get it fixed, and somehow once the shop assistant touches the laptop, it's back on. Teasing me, completely fine. The laptop worked completely as normal for the rest of the day, with me tentatively turning it on and off to check I wasn't in an anxiety induced hallucination and still on the phone with Lenovo. The laptop seemed fixed, I cancelled the scheduled repair and thought that would be that.

Until of course it happened again, two months later. Similar to the above the device would not turn back on after having been put into sleep mode. Unfortunately I did not have the same luck this time round, and the device was indeed sent into the technicians for repair. I was "lucky" this happened on a Friday evening as I could arrange to use an alternative device in time for the following work week, however it is of a much lower standard - yet has been already more reliable than my Lenovo.

The c740 arrived at my front door this morning, the 30th of November. This came as a surprise, because I had received no communication as to the status of my device from Lenovo whatsoever. Nothing with regards to as if they had actually received the device from UPS, its status or even if the device was actually able to be repaired.

I lifted the device out of the box and immeditaely I could see a large dent to the body of the laptop. The air vent on the rear of the device was heavily caved in and the bottom of the device was out of place. There was no damage to the packaging the device arrived in, in fact they even returned the box I sent my laptop in. There was two boxes, the external padded with bubble wrap concealing the smaller box which again was padded with foam around the device. No tears to the box, nothing. It was clear that the device was actually dropped, bang smack onto a table during the repair process. The documents inside hinted at my suspicion, the person listed as the repair technician only put their first name - likely in a pathetic attempt to cover up the fact they dropped it. Yet what annoys me most is that the laptop was tested, likely went through some screening or second approval and nothing was flagged to me. Likely to cover up this complacency.

From this point, I rang Lenovo Cusotmer Support to explain the siutation. My call was disconnected twice, not randomly but rather conveniently after the service rep had heard my circumstance and bluntly chose not to respond. Twice. It was only after asking for the name of the final servcie rep and giving them my number to call me back should we disconnect was I met with any reasonable response. Even then, I could hear a certain annoyance in their tone, and hushed whispers while I spoke. Another repair ticket was created to pick up my damaged device. No alternative was presented to me, with little attempts made at apology. I can only assume the device will be collected and out of my possession for a further two weeks, only adding to my frustartions regarding accessing my work as Ireland has been in a strict lockdown for the better part of six weeks as of writing.

Despite the fact this circumstance was out of my control and that it was acknolwedged to have solely been Lenovo's negligence, I alone must deal with the consequences of this and will not have my laptop for a further period of time. I chose to buy the laptop directly from Lenovo for added protection, for the peace of mind that the manufacturer could handle any issues I may incur when using the device. Had I known what I have since experienced I would have avoided Lenovo at all costs. I'm writing this post, which in essence is a blog/diary entry now, not even in the hopes of getting a refund or replacement or even an apology, but just in the hope I could direct one person away from this shitshow of a service, a former-self who when researching laptops as extensively as I did would know this pain, this desolation in feeling so powerless and despondent in dealing with Lenovo.

To anyone actually reading this far, and particularly to any unfortunate person working for this company. Lenovo, fuck you.

Need help with deciding between these 3 options

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:55 AM PST

I'm looking at the ASUS Zephyrus G14, Razer blade 15 2020 base model and the lenovo legion 5Pi.

I can get the g14 and the razer blade at relatively similar prices while the legion will be significantly cheaper (around 500-600 aud cheaper).

The laptop will be used for light video editing, programming, gaming and web browsing. I value portability but it's not like I'll be running a marathon wearing my backpack. I also value battery life. 6 ish hours from browsing is a minimum.

    RAM: All 16GB RAM

    Storage: All 512GB

Display: All except the g14 have 144 hz screens (the g14 is at 120). All 1920 x 1080.

Graphics: Razer and lenovo have 2060. G14 has 1650ti

CPU: i7-10750H for both the razer and the lenovo. G14 has 4800H.

    Dell Latitude 7400?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:49 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

My current machine is a 2010 MacBook that I bought second hand. Despite its age it still works great for day-to-day browsing and simple tasks, but there are some tempting deals on right now and I think it's a good time to upgrade.

Requirements - I would use the laptop mainly for working from home, so mostly video calls and MS Office. But I used to play PC games when I was younger and would quite like the option to do some casual gaming again. I plan on buying an Xbox Series S at some point, so we aren't talking AAA titles, probably just some strategy games that don't translate well to console. I also do some photo editing on Adobe Lightroom (although will probably switch to a free version on a new machine as I can't really justify the subscription cost).

There's a great deal on at the moment for a Dell Latitude 7400. It gets good reviews, so given my requirements above, does /r/suggestalaptop think it is a good buy? I should add too, build quality and longevity is important to me (hence my current machine being 10yrs old). Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Rethinking about my decision

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:52 AM PST

Hey everyone, I recently bought a gaming laptop HP omen 15 (ryzen 5 4700H, 1660 Ti, 512 Gbs, 16 gigs ram for a price of 1,083 euros from HP website). I want to make sure if this was the right decision and the price is close to what I would get from the store ? I have bought it on sale in germany but any comment is appreciated.

It was a sudden decision because of the specifications. I had thought about buying Lenovo slim 7 ryzen 7 (but I heard that is being discontinued from Lenovo - so that shifted me to this direction) I wanted to buy a laptop which will last me for about 6-7 years and I would not have any complaints and Lenovo checked all the boxes in portability (college student) and price with around 850-900 euros.

All I want to know is whether I made a right decision or did my impulsive nature brought me doom. P.S I haven't received my omen yet and I can send it back in warranty if you guys suggest me something better.I guess I was so hyped up by omen with all the reviews. Please help

Looking for the absolute best video editing/general purpose laptop for under $3,000

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:51 AM PST

    Minor caveats:

    • I'll be working outdoors a fair amount, high brightness is a must
    • 17" preferred, 15" okay
    • Needs to charge via USB C
    • I'm partial to Ryzen but it's not necessary
    • I would rather not get to the $3,000 mark unless it's REALLY worth it. Looking for greatest bang for my buck

I'll have my own mouse so I don't care about trackpad quality too much.

    • US
    • open to refurbs
    • weight/slimness not crazy important but i dont want a tank
    • main software: premiere pro
    • touchscreen would be nice but not necessary
    • foldable would be nice but not necessary

Thanks in advance guys! Willing to tip whoever can help me find something good :D

Which laptop would be suitable ?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:26 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm going back to college for nursing and I have to get a laptop. I'm leaning towards Apple because all of my apple products have held up. Plus I'm afraid of catching a virus (which Microsoft is more prone to). But I'm also open to other brands.

I really just need something simple that will have enough storage for school and will allow me to take online classes.

This laptop is only for writing papers and attending online classes.

I was thinking of getting the MacBook Air with the i3 processor but decided to ask around in case someone has better suggestion

Gaming laptop for up to 1500€ in Germany.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:03 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Up to 1500€ in Germany.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Not really.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't really care if the laptop is bulky, the most important things here are performance and buold quality. As long as it's not a desktop replacement I'll be fine.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all, as long as it doesn't get ridiculous.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    I somewhat prefer 17".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will mainly do gaming, I got a working station at home which I use for my editing-work. Nonetheless i would appreciate the possibility to use it as a backup system if need be.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Cyberpunk 2077 lol. As long as i get 60+ FPS at decent settings in modern games I'm happy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch- screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I love me a good Keyboard. If possible, i take anything above a plastic body any day, but that is no requirement after all.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd love the lsptop to not have the gamer-look all over it since I might bring it into office when my homeoffice ends. But I've always wanted per key rgb lol so that would be a wish haha.

Ty in advance for your recommendations!

i5-1035G1/4GB RAM v i3-1005G1/8GB RAM for somebody starting out in programming

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:05 AM PST

I moved abroad last year only bringing my Chromebook with me, leaving my laptop in my home country with the intention of retrieving it at some point. However, due to the pandemic, that hasn't happened.

Recently i've taken an interest in programming, taking some courses in Python and C, plus some Wordpress stuff. Nothing too demanding, but i've been somewhat limited by the gear I have to hand. So i'm looking to buy a reasonably priced laptop to continue my studies (~£450).

I've found a couple of decent options and was wandering, with the programming stuff in mind, would you recommend I go for i5-1035G1/4GB RAM(could possibly upgrade the RAM myself) or i3-1005G1/8GB RAM?

    Gaming Laptop under 1000 USD

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:40 PM PST

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.Probably 15.6", but would consider 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Video/photo editing, as well as gaming. Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Lightroom, and typical games like Valorant, Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, Rocket League, GTA V etc. I want to be able to play games at decent settings.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Above. I'd like to run at least medium settings at 100+ fps at least. I am more likely to turn down settings in favor of higher FPS.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?I'd like a number pad, at least one USB-C (with DisplayPort), keyboard backlight, preferably 16gb of RAM (or 8 with upgradability), and Ethernet port.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I've got my eye on the 2060. I know it may be hard to find in this price range, especially without a bottleneck CPU. I can find some with i5s, but those definitely would bottleneck a 2060. Thank you for reading and any input at all in appreciated!

I'm Hoping to compare 3 laptops in terms of just gaming performance, and get a suggestion on which is the best.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:03 PM PST

I'm way in over my head here. I'm trying to use comparison websites to see the different rankings on the video card/processor. Some of these have better GPU, some have better CPU, and I don't know which is more important for gaming. I guess I'm asking which combo is best on these in order to provide the most power for gaming. (BF5/CoD/Lastest Tomb Raider/FFXV/VR capability) stuff like that. Stuff that can be left out of the ranking process can be like.. SSD capacity/overall cost. I mostly just want a performance ranking. (I know it's a stretch to post this here, but it seems like it would fit, and I dunno where else I'd post it) So... what laptop do you suggest? Rank #1 #2 #3

Need new laptop for school, work, and maybe gaming under $1500

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

-My budget is flexible and $1500 is a soft ceiling, but obviously want the best bang for my buck.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    -No. Would prefer new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-An amazing battery life is key. Solid, but light build because I have to carry in my backpack all day.

-As long as it will fit into and won't weigh my backpack down, I'm flexible.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

-Nothing tiny, but not a tank (13 or 15 inches?)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Probably light steam gaming with potential to branch out to higher level games.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-I don't know much about gaming, but I want to enjoy as many games that look good and run smoothly.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-Need a USB port for wireless mouse and generally solid build quality, so it can handle being in a backpack. No optical drive or touch screen necessary

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-My current laptop dies after two hours unplugged while in zoom class.

-For school/work, I use a lot of word, excel and jupyter notebook for python.

-In short, a laptop that is travel friendly, but can run games, excel, and code with an amazing battery life.

    One vs another

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:05 PM PST

So I currently have an HP model 17-ca1002cy.

I don't use a whole lot of stuff with the exception of working at home and cricut design. When I design it's quite the slow laggy frustration. Eventually I will need to use it for photo editing when I go back down that road.

I'm currently test driving a MSI modern 15 a10m-262 and it's been nice and seems a bit faster (haven't tried design yet). I have read the reviews on it and it doesn't seem to bad. A few reviews suggested that its been a great laptop and has 2 extra SSD slots and which created much faster performance. I also have 2 external 1tb hard drives so space isn't an issue.

Reality is all this lingo is like a foreign language to me.

    Any opinions

    ASUS or Lenovo

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:55 PM PST

I'm deciding whether to get a ASUS Zenbook 14 Q407IQ with the Ryzen 5 4500U and 8 gen of ram or the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14" with the same processor but 16 gen of ram. The Lenovo has more ram so more future proofing but the ASUS has a very good sRGB coverage and better graphics (mx350) and I want that because I want to do art, photo editing and maybe video editing on it.

High refresh for thin and lights? 90Hz +

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:44 PM PST

Ever since I got my new Pixel 5 I've started really noticing the 60hz on my Surface Laptop (I know, massive first world problem). I am due for an upgrade soon going to uni next year, so I'd love to find a laptop that still has a great screen, is thin and has awesome battery life like my Laptop 1 but preferably with a 90hz or higher screen. I don't know if anything like that exists though.

Every screen in my life except for my laptop is now 90hz or better (200hz TV, 90hz phone, 144hz PC) so it would honestly be one of the main reasons for me buying a certain laptop over another. Thanks.

Laptop for dealing with big data, computational methods. $600-$800, US

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:36 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $600-800, United States
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Sure, if durability isn't a concern
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance > build quality > battery life. Don't really care about the rest
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I prefer a lighter laptop, but its not super important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6" max, though like 13-14" is prefered.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
My last two laptops have failed and I haven't been able to fix because no parts could be found, which is really annoying. I think a more common laptop would help avoid this problem.

Im a PhD student and I will be using this laptop a lot for working with large data sets and also high level computational methods for solving models. So the faster it can run Julia/R/Matlab/ similar programs, the better! Also will be doing a good amount of video streaming for attending classes.

Thank you! really appreciate any help!

Looking for solid personal use laptop with great keyboard for writing/programming. Up to 1500usd.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:18 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Up to $1500 but obviously the lower the better. (US purchase)

Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, as long as in excellent condition

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance = Build Quality > Battery Life > Form factor.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not sure but given Id like to do some coding and photo editing in it, not too small.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe photo editing in Lightroom. Do not game much but would likethe option to do light gaming, cannot really think of any game in particular so Ill just say WoW/FFXIV. Probably some youtube video editing in the future too.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Rarely, if ever, game but itd be nice to have the option available. Would be fine with just medium settings at like 30 fps. I grew up on consoles so that doesn't bother me.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is a top priority as I want to use this mainly for writing. Also would like to use it for programming, just starting to learn Python. 10 key would be nice for when I use things like excel but its not a requirement since I have a usb 10 key if inclusion eliminates better options.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Have been leaning towards Lenovo Thinkpad series since they seem to have the best keyboards. I have one from my company and I like it for typing. But I am curious if those onboard visuals are enough or not. It seems like if they arent that there are almost no options in the Thinkpad line. There is the T15g but that RTX 2070 seems like massive over kill for me.

Was thinking Id like 16gb ram and 512+gb SSD but maybe that isnt necessary. Although this will be my main computing device that Id like to use for a few years as my old PC is archaic now.

    Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention that with the screen brightness. Ill mainly use this at home, maybe once in a while at a cafe or something. Not sure what I need. Is 300 nits sufficient for general use as I probably wouldnt use it too much outside. But then again I could see myself possibly wanting to write in different settings outside from time to time.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Would rather brand new but just looking for a quality laptop

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Performance is suggested

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 17 inches would be preferred

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly web browsing, maybe minor photo editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      negative, mostly pristine web browsing

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A larger font keyboard would be better but not necessary

I would like to get my mother a laptop for christmas that she will use for her small business that she organizes online.

I am not very knowledgeable on the subject and appreciate any suggestions!

Looking for a 1000$ music production laptop

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:16 PM PST

Hey all, I'm currently looking laptop to produce music with.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    no

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No 2-in-1 or any stuff like that. Going to be traveling with it, so I don't really mind the weight if its durable.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Going to be traveling with it, so I don't really mind the weight that much if its durable. (within reason, I don't want something crazy heavy)

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-15in (preferably closer to 15in)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

FL studio, ableton, protools, not going to be doing any gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I don't mind the keyboard as long as it works well. No touchscreen preferably and I'll be using a mouse most of the time, but a good mousepad would be nice

16+ gb ram and 1tb ssd, any average graphics card is fine, most of the cost should be towards the cpu. I need as many ports as possible, and I have an audio interface so the soundcard isn't an issue.

Anything better than MacBook Air M1 in the same price range?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:10 PM PST

Hello, I'll go straight to the point.

I need a laptop and my budget is around €1200 (=1400 USD). I've never used any apple device. I have a old dell laptop which now runs linux because it ran like crap on windows, a desktop PC with Pop_OS! and a OnePlus 7 pro.

I study engineering (management). I need a device that's light and portable and has a good battery life. I'll have to do some coding in the next years and probably some cad but mainly carrying it around using it to look at my notes.

Ever since these new m1 devices have come out my impression is that they kinda destroyed the competition at that price point and in the thin and light form factor. I'm looking for any other option because I'm not someone that likes to waste his money, but at the moment it's hard for me to pick a device and go "that's clearly better than the M1 Air".

I know the rule of thumb is "never buy version 1 of anything", i fully understand it, but I need a laptop now. Thank you for your help!

I need a gaming laptop <$1500 that can comfortably run AAA games at above 60fps and doesn't look like a Decepticon

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:22 AM PST

My last laptop was the Acer Aspire V Nitro and while it had decent specs, it ran so hot under load that it throttled all the time and recently has started crashing. Even after cooling pads, repastes, and undervolting.

So now I need to find a new laptop that can run games like overwatch, modded skyrim, and COD without doubling as a mobile stove top.

I don't mind if the new laptop is on the chunky side, so long as the lid doesn't have some ugly mlg gamer logo plastered on it.

Thank you for taking the time to help.
