    Installing a game(win) from a disc

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:23 AM PST

Hello, i thought to be quite advanced already but i can't figure out this problem....

i've got this japanese Visual Novel (White Album 2) and i've already figured out the locale thing but that only helped me show the error message in propper japanese instead of jumbled boxes.

the installer asks me to insert the disc while the disc is clearly inside the computer and is set as drive F: inside winecfg but the console only show the error:

"wine: Read access denied for device L"\\??\\F:\\", FS volume label and serial are not available."

so the error seems quite clear, how do i give wine read access to my cd?

EDIT: i'm terribly sorry i somehow figured it out myself by just mounting the disks as root, setting the prefix to root and then run wine with root and then just change the ownership back to the user and then everything works except for the movie files i'd like suggestions on to how to get the mfplat thing working for videos or it that already just inside wine and it's not compatible yet?

Went in blind with Debian, now stuff on pretty much everything.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:06 AM PST

Hey all, I recently just installed Debian after talking to someone about it. Before I installed it they kinda just went dark on me and haven't spoken since after promising they'd help guide me through everything I need to do with this so now I'm just stuck with Debian and pretty much nothing else. I don't even know how to get my audio working or install discord to talk to friends with. I'm entirely clueless so.

I've asked elsewhere and either gotten no response or just been told to reinstall windows which I don't think I can actually do now so I'm basically stuck with linux.

Any and all help is appreciated, just anything that'll help really. Rn main issue is to get my audio working as quickly as possible.

Question concerning Steam games on Multiple distros...

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:46 AM PST

Hey folks! Linux noob here with a question for the collective deep thought...

A while back I discovered on Windows that if you install Steam and point the client to previous Steam game installs, it auto installs it with no downloading needed and it's ready to go.

So I'm wondering if Steam behaves that way in Linux with multiple distros?

I've got different distros running on separate physical drives. I've installed Steam for each distro along with the same games for each distro. But if Steam works the same way as it's Windows version, can I point Steam from one distro (say Pop) to a steam game install on another distro (say Manjaro) and have it work the same? I'm guessing as long as the file system (ext4) is the same it should be fine but a distro with a different file system (Garuda with BTRFS) wouldn't be ideal.

I was just going to experiment on this but decided to exercise a little caution and ask the non-noobs first before I break something.

    Thanks for reading!

    Terminal password not working/reseting

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:58 AM PST

I'm not the most tech savvy person, and I'm hopeless when it comes to terminal so if the answer is really obvious, I'm sorry. Basically whenever I try to enter my password into Terminal it doesn't work. I've tried changing it in the root, doing sudo passwd, but it never works. I restarted terminal and nothing. The password didn't update. I had to do sudo passwd cause I needed my current password for just the passwd command. I'm going to try to restart my computer to see if that changes anything. Google searches haven't really helped much as they were what got me to do sudo passwd but that didn't work. I do remember seeing something about corrupt passwords but I might be remembering wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

    Shotcut-Linux-Chromebook-Bug...

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:53 AM PST

I don't know if this would be the right subreddit (if there is a better one for this question then please tell me), but I got Shotcut on my Chromebook by getting Nautilus and making the file executable. I used a later version because the newer one didn't work so well. The problem, though, is that my cursor is not visible half of the times that I open it. Anyone have a solution? I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Hard Drive partition question (Ubuntu/Win10 Dual Boot)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:53 AM PST

Hard drive parition question (Ubuntu Dual boot install)

In all the tutorials i've read about installing Ubuntu as a dual boot setup they have me to creating a Root, Swap, and home partition. Have a few questions regarding this. Here they are...

    1. Should I partition more? On other Linux systems I've used in the past I see bin, boot, db, dev, etc, lib, lib64, etc folders.
    2. How should space be allocated? In general I shrunk my second 1TB SSD hard drive for Linux. Going to be using the Linux to primarily run Da Vinci Resolve
    3. I keep reading about how the suggestible swap size is double of RAM. However, a swap dir is only needed if I have low system ram. Can someone explain that to me like a 3rd grader? My current setup has 128gb of RAM
    4. Think that's it...

As Always, greatly appreciate everything guys!!!

    DiskCountersView equivalent in Linux?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:32 AM PST

Looking for Linux equivalent of this: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/disk_counters_view.html

It's like a storage device odometer, you can press F7 to reset the counter, to see how much an OS or app is writing to your SSD (and nuke it from your system if it's writing an unreasonable amount for the purpose it serves).

I know there's smartmontools, but that's no odometer, and the raw value is not in bytes so there's some math you'd have to do. So I'm not interested in using such a low-level tool directly.

Was installing Mint for a family member, their laptop had a virus, and I moved the flash drive back to my laptop. Should I be worried? (x-post)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:27 AM PST

    Crossposting for additional feedback.

Basically, I made a silly move. The laptop I was trying to install Linux on already had a virus (Windows), and it was initially unresponsive to the inserted drive formatted w/Linux. I moved the drive to my laptop (Mint) to check on it, everything necessary was there, and I moved the USB drive back to the Windows laptop.

Should I be concerned? I have a couple of questions:

    1) How can I completely wipe the flash drive clean? I know there's a command for it, but I can't recall (I've searched, and I don't know if it's correct).

    2) Is there a way I can scan for viruses on both laptops (now Linux)? I understand Linux is more resilient to viruses, but I'm still a bit worried.

Any help would be amazing. Thank you!

Help with strange lines that appear and flicker in Ubuntu 20.04.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:28 AM PST

I have had this irritating problem with Ubuntu ever since i installed it. Whenever I use the mouse, or keyboard flickering lines begin to appear, often in the top left portion of the screen. If I stop mousing, or typing, the lines stop. The longer my computer stays on, the worse the lines become and spread around the display. This problem is probably easily solvable but I have not found anything on google that seems to address it. Plus, I am a noob. I appreciate any assistance on this matter, thanks!

Are applications added via PPAs supposed to NOT appear in the app store GUI(Gnome-software)?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:07 AM PST

In my attempt to install Lutris on Ubuntu Budgie. I added the PPA to the extra sources tab in Gnome settings. Weirdly, I cannot search for Lutris in Gnome-software. I can install lutris form the terminal by typing

    sudo apt install lutris

so I know the PPA is properly added.

Are PPA apps supposed to not show up in the app center GUI? Or is this bugged for me?

    Thanks
