Lenovo X1 Carbon 8th gen Vs. Dell XPS 13 (old or new version)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:39 AM PST

Hey all, I have narrowed my laptop search down to these choices and I just cannot decide which to go with. Either the newest X1 Carbon with the 10th gen i7, 8gb memory or there are a few options I am looking at for the XPS 13... either the new edition with the 11th gen i5, 8gb memory, last generation with 10th gen i7, 8gb memory or lastly the last gen touch screen with 10th gen i7 and 16gb memory? I basically live on my laptop, so I want something that is going to hold up and run as smooth as possible. I only do web browsing and movie/tv streaming. which is best for the money you think?

Difference in HP Envy and Pavilion keyboard

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:31 PM PST

I have been using the Envy keyboard and am pleased. I just got a cheaper Pavilion laptop and the keyboard felt loose and noisy. Is that true for all the latest Pavilions? Or did I get a bad model? I got a 15t dy100, is the 15t-eg000 any better?

Remove or disable Computeace on HP Probook 640?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:26 PM PST

Hi, everyone. First post in here. I have a question; I received a laptop from work after our company was acquired as they upgraded to newer technology. I want to swap the hdd for a larger ssd and upgrade the ram modules, then install Ubuntu and run a Linux system on it. Will this effectively "deactivate" the Computrace functions, or will the bios automatically load into the Linux OS?

Games have their save data deleted

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:44 PM PST

I recently helped a friend by replacing an old corrupted hard drive with a fresh one. I've helped a lot of people recently by tuning up their laptops and cleaning their hard drives/installing but this particular case is the only one to have issues after I put in a new drive.

I think its linked to the way Steam saves games on their hard drive but a clean install of the steam client didn't make a difference. They would still need to reinstall (say Stardew Valley) and all the data from their saved characters is gone and the files in the trash bin. Terarria files would corrupt and be sent to trash on start up and then un-trashing the files wouldn't fix the problem, there would just be the icon of an unusable character im their character list. They've been saving the characters and files to a flash drive manually after every play session but its very annoying for them.

I didn't do anything different for the recovery of windows that I did for my desktop and I have had 0 issues with mine, whether its steam game files or not.

Any ideas? Did I buy a bunk "new" harddrive? Could it be steam related? Or something entirely different?

Please help me choose a laptop for personal/business use.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:26 AM PST

I do some entertainment, streaming videos etc., but mostly some light photo editing and writing. I wouldn't mind getting back into light gaming, COD type FPS and flight simulators (haven't played any in years due to kids/time), but that's not my priority. I'm looking at Lenovo thinkpads and ideapads, and I'd like to spend under $700ish. Preferably a decent amount of ram (8-12) and an ssd. Are other brands worth it, dell, hp? I haven't bought a new laptop in over a decade and I feel lost looking at all the specs online.

    Thanks

    Media student laptop recommendation

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:55 AM PST

I'm looking to buy a new laptop as my Macbook Pro bit the dust today (RIP to that expensive bitch). I'm looking for a laptop with atleast an i7 chip and 4k display with a dedicated graphics card. We often have to edit videos and photos at school so it has to be relatively powerful. I'm open to both windows and apple as long as it's under $1500 CAD. Thanks in advance!

Brand new omen 17, should i do a fresh windows install before using?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:30 AM PST

Generally whenever I get a new laptop, first thing I do is a fresh windows install to get rid of all the manufacturers garbage. Anything I should consider before doing this on an HP Omen? Anything in particular I should try to keep?

Helios 300 or the Asus ROG STRIX g15?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:16 AM PST

    Specs: G15... RTX 2070, i7-10750H, 1TB SSD Storage, 16GB RAM, 240HZ

Specs: Helios 300... RTX 2060, same cpu, 512 GB SSD Storage (I'd add more in the long run) 16 GB RAM, 144HZ

I'd be using either of these laptops for gaming, and school work. Mainly FPS and Battle Royale games.

    Macbook Air M1

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:21 AM PST

Is the new macbook air worth it? I'm just gonna use it for uni — online classes, typical searching and writing stuff, programming, and a little bit of photoshop. Not a gamer so I don't plan on using it for any games. Not sure if this is important but memory is not rlly an issue for me cos I dont store a lot of files on my laptop.

I'm coming from a windows laptop so I don't know if it's worth the switch though a big factor on why I plan on switching is that all my other gadgets are apple. Any thoughts are appreciated! Or recommendations for other laptop models that you think are better than the macbook air (and hopefully in the same price range as the base model of air). Thanks!

    Advice please! New laptop specs

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:38 AM PST

Hello and apologies for not knowing a lot about laptops, but I need your advice!

I've had the same laptop for about eight years and it's on its last legs. The power cable only works when it's sellotaped in place and the laptop sounds like it's getting ready to take off most of the time.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop on a budget and need some pointers on what to go for.

I've kind of settled on this: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9192562

Do you think that's a good deal?

I would be using it for Google Docs, YouTube, Netflix, etc. I also want to play some games (eg older ones from GOG.com, nothing too taxing) but I'm not sure if it will handle it.

Don't really understand processors and graphics cards!

    Thanks for you help!

Could someone KNOWLEDGEABLE please give me a rundown on different brands of laptops in terms of quality, dependability and durability?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:33 AM PST

I have a few friends that are computer hardware guys. But each one is so biased to one brand, it's unreal. One guy says Mac-only, another says Dell latitude only and yet another says anything but Dell.

Thoughts on the HP ProBook G7?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:32 AM PST

Hi, I tried duckducking this model but there seems to be very little info about it online, maybe due to it not being destined to First World countries. As I've lost track of the recent advancement in hardware, I'm turning to you people for an opinion about this laptop has under the hood, namely : - an Intel Core™ i5-10210U - Intel UHD Graphics 620

    A variant carries a Geforce Mx130 : is it worth the extra 40 $ ?

I know this is not r/suggestalaptop but this machine will be mainly used for my job as a freelancer in data analysis, visualisation and wrangling. I'll be running python scripts, power BI and other similar apps on large datasets. So far my specs are rather basic and arbitrary : an i5 chipset and an SSD drive. Am I missing something?
