    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:09 PM PST

[SOLVED] Had Ethernet cable from modem plugged into wrong port on router, LOL.

Setting up a new TP-Link router (Archer A8), and got my computer connected to it's Wi-Fi network. Webpages are loading just fine, but my Steam/Origin games are not working because I'm unable to connect to servers.

Additionally, the "Internet On" light on the router is not lit up, and the router settings page says "No Internet Connection".

How am I loading webpages just fine, but my games/apps can't connect to servers?

    Controlling TP-Link EAPs

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:52 PM PST

    I'm buying 2 or 3 EAP245s.

    1. What features do I lose by not having a controller (either OC200 or software)?
    2. Do I need a dedicated computer 24/7 for running a software controller?
    3. Can I run the controller on my main PC and just never turn it off?
    4. Is there a cheap PC like a NUC or Raspberry Pi or similar that is a good option to run it as an alternative to the OC200?

    Thanks a bunch m' dudes.

TP-Link OneMesh - extender over ethernet?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:12 PM PST

I currently have my router on my bottom floor. I have it plugged into a switch, and then pre-wired to all rooms in the house. On the top floor, can I plug in the range extender into the ethernet point and have it work as a mesh extender? Or does onemesh extension require connecting to source over wifi?

RT-AX92U mesh and synology on a wireless backhaul

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:10 PM PST

Hello, I have my synology 920+ connected to RT-AX92U node which has a wireless backhaul to the RT-AX92U router. I have a 2019 mbp and I can see the shared folder, and when I drag and drop it and I look at the stats on the synology widget it shows me 10mb/s/. Isn't this too slow? How can I make this faster? Thanks.

    10Gb Link Speed Issues >35ft

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:06 PM PST

I'm trying to trouble shoot one of my 10Gb lines. Using a Unifi Pro 24 POE, 10gtek SFP+ module with RJ-45 adapter in the switch, an OWC Thunderbolt 3 10Gb adapter and a 100 ft cat 6a line between.

When I'm connected with a line less than about 35 feet, the macOS Network Utility app is reporting a 10Gb connection and when I speed test against the NAS it's about what I'd expect. However, when I get over 35 feet, I can only get a link speed of 5Gb.

I've tried different cables, different Thunderbolt adapters, different computers, jumbo frames on/off, forcing link connection on the switch to 10Gb and I keep reverting back to 5Gb link speeds.

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I should try? Someone mentioned 10Gb links over copper with SFP+ modules don't get the stated 100m that 6a is rated for. I also thought about getting the UI SFP+ module that only does 1Gb and 10Gb to see if that'll force it to the speed I need.

How will Wifi Extender in Powerline Adapter affect Internet Speed/Performance?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:47 PM PST

    Hello, tech-savvies!

I am looking to buy a powerline adapter for my rented apt. I'm considering TP-Link TL-PA4010KIT and TP-Link TL-WPA4220 AV600, (because of good reviews, and low prices). I have limited tech knowledge, and I believe the main difference between these powerline adapters is that one has the added function of extending wi-fi signal.

My question is: Will a powerline adapter with a wireless signal extender negatively impact the internet performance, signal strength, etc? I am not sure which of these two powerline adapters would perform better.

I primarily want to connect my desktop with a 'wired' connection for gaming. At times, my wireless devices disconnect from the wifi randomly, but I'm not entirely sure if it's because my wifi signal is too weak (it's a small apt. and a plaster wall separates the router and my room.)

All i know is that I should buy it from a store with a good return policy in case they don't perform well.

Need advice on what to get to improve Wi-Fi coverage, especially for gaming.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:59 AM PST

I will be moving house soon and our current router (VirginMedia superhub3) will likely be unable to cover the house as it will be a much larger building. My dad says he is willing to pay up to £100 - £120, but if necessary I can try and persuade him to pay extra for a better result.

I would like to have two separate frequencies (Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz (I already have them separate on the router. It makes it easier to manage devices and keep the multiple consoles away from other devices to reduce interference. If there are better options, let me know)).

I personally would prefer to have wired ethernet connections, but my dad doesn't like the idea of drilling holes in floors, ceilings and walls; so it's wiring directly from the router is an unlikely option.

I have been thinking of a mesh network but have heard from other posts on here that they are not great for gaming.

If anyone has any ideas on what I could try and do/get, please let me know.

    Thank you.

Why does the WiFi on my Netgear Nighthawk slow to a crawl almost every day?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:47 PM PST

I have Verizon Fios gigabit service and usually have great speeds but once every day or so I have to restart the router to get the speed back up. I've tried firmware updates and moving my echo dot across the room but no help. Switching to 5ghz doesn't help either. Any ideas?

Why would my laptop be stuck at 130 mpbs when connected to my 1gb network?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:45 PM PST

I have a laptop I use for work, I have to upload and download large files from home now.

I've been troubleshooting it's internet connection because it gets ~130mbps when testing.

The same cable switched over to my desktop gets ~900mbps.

The laptop is an HP elitebook and according to the device manager has an gigabit ethernet port.

It makes no sense to me why it's capped so low?

I was hoping someone might know why.

    Many thanks!

Need help blocking brother-in-law’s Remote Desktop Connection

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:37 PM PST

First, I should give a little background. We currently live in a Comcast area, so internet through them is our only option and we have a 1.2 TB limit.

Before my brother in law (BiL) moved in, we never really hit our cap and never had a problem. BiL moves in last month and (long story short) explains he can't pick up his PC 5+ hours away any time soon and he's just gonna remote desktop (RDC) into it while he's here with us for a few months via his work laptop.

I didn't think much of it until last month when I got an email saying we were about to hit our limit with 10 days left.

The only explanation to me is that he is the one increasing our usage, as my wife and I'd habits haven't changed. I explained this to him and he says I can't really prove it and that he's gonna go pick it up soon (2+ months) when he has time. He won't pay and we really don't want to charge him the extra fees because we're getting him to a point where he can go live on his own again. Basically, I've run out of options and I'm not going to start a conflict with him and put my wife in a tough spot.

So here I am coming to you all. Is there a way to block RDC access to his laptop so that he'll be forced to make time to go get his PC? I've tried, via the router, blocking the 3389 port and all ports to his device but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Is there something else I need to do to block that so his RDC won't work anymore?

    Thanks!

    Edit: Netgear Orbi router

Home Garden Office Cat6 Underground Cable Run..

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:21 PM PST

    Hi,
Apologies if this is answered before i had a look through posts and didn't seen anything quite similar and I want to link to a specific product.

I am having a home office built in garden - it will have full electric installed when it is built and I want to run at least 2 cat6 cables back to my router in the loft. I am not totally sure how far it is but i guess its a run of 35m..

The cable will be buried in a trench and I am hoping to be in same trench as electric hookup.. I am worried by interference with cable but don;t really want to pay to dig two trenches really.. I assume it would be approx 5m absolutely max together and assume I can have a little seperation if required. Also I am assume it will be direct burial rather than conduit.. but need to find out

It is a home installation so trying to keep costs down I am looking at this cable - https://connectec.uk/networking/network-infrastructure/data-cable/copper-data-cable/cat-6-direct-burial-hdpe-cable?variant_id=12767#variant-details good price for 100m..

Question is will that be ok and also should I do full run in this cable or only outside bit of 5m and the internal runs using normal inside CAT 6 - and connect with a jct box? And if I do full run in this cable is it really hard to bend and terminate?

    thanks for any advice

TP-Link AC1900 Archer A8 not connecting to internet, ip 0.0.0.0

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:30 PM PST

I bought a new router a Tp-Link Archer A8. I replaced my old router with it but no internet. The IP is 0.0.0.0. First I called the internet provider, they said their server gives ips every 3 hour, so I just have to wait. This was 7 hours ago.

What I tried: * Tried to connect with dinamic IP and PPPoS too * Cloned my PC's MAC address to the router * replaced the cabels with new ones * reseted the modem * changed the routers address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 * windows troubleshooting (lol, I'm desperate) * connected my PC to the modem directly, NO Internet that way too, you guessed right IP problems. (But there was internet before the router change.)

Please if you have any idea, share with me.

Wiring my new house -- Multiport PoE injector vs PoE Switch. How to balance reliability vs Cost Vs Flexibility?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:15 PM PST

Will try to be succinct up front -- more details below.

I need some help choosing one of these approaches as I wire my new home...

    Approach 1:

Just get one "big" POE Switch and be done with it.

Simple, a bit expensive, potentially more costly to replace in the future.

    Approach 2:

Go modular and swap out/upgrade devices down the road as needed.

Less expensive (probably negated by the need for more cables), but maybe more flexible as I could upgrade one piece at a time down the road as needed -- not sure if there's really a benefit to that.

    More background info:

I'm doing some work before moving into a 3-story townhouse + basement. I had to open up a couple of walls and took the opportunity to run cat6 up to the middle room on each floor.

I'm planning to setup the switch/poe equipment in the basement and tp-link EAP235 in-wall PoE APs on the top floor and one of the lower floors.

In the very near future, I intend to install POE cameras at the front and back doors as well -- basement has separate front/back entrance, so 4 total cameras is not unlikely, but at least 2.

I may also run cat6 up to the front/back rooms while I'm doing the cameras, but I'm really trying not to get carried away with opening up walls.

Short term, before I move in, I plan to use one of these gl.iNet OpenWRT routers (or similar) to connect to an Xfinity hotspot in the area (I have Xfinity at my current home) just to have something to test things out with and use as needed while i'm at the house. I will also install the tp-link Omada Controller software on this device.

In the future, I would turn off the wifi and just use it as a wired gateway for either Xfinity or Fios and Omada Controller to manage the APs.

That's what I know for sure.

I just need to decide on one of the two approaches above.

As for future POE needs, maybe someday i'd get some voip phones? who knows. I doubt i'd ever need more than 8 ports, but i'm sure if i had 16, I could find uses for them. Extra cameras never hurt, right?

I think it's more likely that i'd use 24 non-POE ports than 16 POE ports, but maybe I'm just not being creative enough?

Basically, I want to take the opportunity I have now to do what I can before I have a house full of furniture and people, but I don't want to go overboard either.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice!

Will upgrading my internet speeds decrease ping response to servers across the country?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:12 PM PST

Thinking about upgrading from my 200 mbps Xfinity plan to 400mbps plan for 20 bucks more a month. The plan will come with a new (presumably better?) modem. My main concern is will this help me get lower ping when gaming with people across the country? Right now I'm getting about 100 down, 5 upload, and 100+ ping when playing with friends on the east coast. I am hard wired, and am gaming on PS4. Any advice/ tips are much appreciated.

TV Sound System, switch between TV's

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:03 PM PST

Hello - I have a client who has 2 sons playing in the NHL. They want to install two TV's wall-mounted on top of each other to watch their son's games at the time time. They want a sound system that can switch between the audio incoming from TV 1 and TV 2 but want both TV's to be on simultaneously. It does not need to be a robust surround sound. A sound bar works just fine. Just need a device to switch the incoming audio. Any suggestions for a system?

    Wireless Router Settings

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:57 PM PST

In the wireless router settings, do you in all circumstances, enable packet aggregation and would there be any reason not to have it enabled?

Also, would this function work differently for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and does preamble short and long have any relevance to these features as well?

I'm living in a densely populated apartment block with my wireless router in my utility room surrounded by pipes, boilers and electrical boxes in there.

Also, what wireless channels are advised for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands or would the auto channel switching be sufficient as selecting one fixed channel would probably mix with others around my flat anyways?

    Choosing the right mesh setup.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:02 PM PST

I am moving into a new home and want to get my wifi setup correctly. Pretty sure I want an Eero 6 system but am not sure if I should get 2 routers or the 1 router and 2 extender package. The house has a main level and full basement. Both about 1500 square feet. The internet comes into the utility room in the basement. I was going to get two Eero 6 routers and setup 1 in the utility room that is then hooked up to a switch that flows to the rest of the house. Setup the second router on the second floor connect via ethernet which is located on one end of the house. Do we think that will be enough coverage or will i need an extender?

Edit: When connected via ethernet, the second router acts as an access point with stronger wifi strength compared to an extender connected via wifi.

AIMesh - Mixing WiFi 6 with WiFi 5?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:30 PM PST

Is anyone here using the ASUS AIMesh and can give me some input here? I've currently got a single ASUS AC86U in my home and I'm looking to add a second router into the mix for mesh. The question is if I should bother with picking up a new ASUS AX router, or go for a used AC router and save some money? All of my primary devices are wifi6 compatible (iPhones and gaming PCs). But my question is what will happen if the primary router is Wifi6 and the node (my AC86U) is wifi5? The node will definitely be closer to my primary devices than the primary, and the routers will be connected with a WiFi backhaul. If I buy an AX router, will my AC router just transmit wifi5 anyway rendering the investment in 6 kind of useless? Budget is a big concern for me which is why I'm wondering this. For example, a used AC-5300 is about $100 cheaper than a new AX-3100.

    Sweet spot for AX routers

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:28 PM PST

I've managed the unthinkable and have reached the point my ancient router (yay 150mbps throughput) is actually my bottleneck. Obviously anything today is an upgrade, but for future-proofing I might as well go AX.

Where in the pricing is the sweetspot where you get decent features before you start paying premiums for no gains? I don't need a mesh, a single router can cover my whole house since I can locate it centrally (making everything less than 30 feet from the router). Looking for something that is very stable as well.

PHY link rate vs. Iperf speeds. Is this normal?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:15 PM PST

So I finally tried Iperf 3 to test my WLAN network speed. I don't use my network for anything but internet access, but I was curious. I tested it with my Windows 10 PC and my Android phone. The PC had a PHY link rate of 433 - 585 mbps and the phone was at about 650 mbps where I conducted the test.

So I tested with Iperf 3 and the speeds I got were... about 130-150 mbps. I tried TCP and UDP, multiple streams, reverse transfer, the most I got was 130-150 mbps.

Is this normal? I know that real world ac speeds are about 60% of what the PHY link rate is, but this is more like 30%.

When I'm using my Wi-Fi router to transfer between devices, does the bandwidth get cut in half similar to using a Wi-Fi repeater? That would explain it. So then the internet connection would actually be faster than the WLAN speed because it's wired on one side? Does this make sense? I can't test that sadly because I only have 100 mbps internet (and I can't hardwire anything to the router atm).

    Input is appreciated!

Can I use an old router to connect a USB HDD to a Nest WiFi network?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:06 PM PST

I currently have an ASUS RT-AC3200 with all sorts of unreproducible problems with the 2.4GHz network. I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue, and am looking to replace it.

I'm leaning towards getting a Nest WiFi setup, but I have an external hard drive that I use as a poor-man's NAS connected to the ASUS, and the Nest setup doesn't have USB.

Can I connect my old ASUS to the Nest router via ethernet as an access point, but turn off all wifi radios and leave the hard drive plugged in? So my old router would just serve as a NAS and maybe a switch for other hardwired connections. Any problems with this idea that I'm not thinking of?
