    Testing self-built network cable

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:55 PM PST

    Hi,

I just made a network cable and I'm want to make sure that there are no hidden surprises. Here's what I did after crimping:

Does that mean the cable is OK to use?

To fibre or not to fibre

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:52 AM PST

I'm having my house renovated fairly soon and I'm going to have a cable run done at the same time.

Two machines have SFP+ cards so I am going to have fibre ran to them but it got me thinking. Is it worth making all of the runs fibre instead of copper? I was originally going to have cat 6 or 7 ran but will fibre ultimately be more future proof? I know I can get RJ45 modules for the endpoints so the only issue I can see with that is POE but I could always add POE switches in the places they're needed.

I worry there I'm missing a vital bit of information that would make this a bad idea though. Do you have any advice?

Can not keep a constant transfer speed

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:11 PM PST

So I am using a Netgear GS110MX connected to a 10gbs desktop card on one of the Netgear's 10gbs ports. On the other end I have a laptop with a usb to 2.5gbs ethernet adapter connected to the second Netgear 10gbs port. Transferring files starts strong at 254mb but quickly start dropping to 64mb. I am using cat 6 cable for both connections. I have tried multiple settings changes on the 2.5gb adapter and can't keep a constant speed. With my old tp-link 1gb switch I can get a solid 110mbs continually. What am I doing wrong?

SMB share transfer speed between 2 computers that are physically connected with an ethernet cable is slow

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:31 PM PST

I don't know much about networking, so I apologize if this is an issue with a simple fix.

I have an SMB share setup on an old desktop pc that I had, it worked over wifi, but the transfer speeds were around 11 MB/s, because my internet isn't the fastest. So I got my laptop and the pc connected via ethernet cable in hopes of being able to transfer files at a much faster rate (that should work right?). However, the file transfer speeds stay about the same. I disconnected from the wifi on my laptop and the desktop doesn't have wifi, so neither had an internet connection, so I'm very confused as to why the speeds would still be slow if the files were transferring via the cable. My cable is years old and around 20 feet long if that helps, because I'm not sure if the cable quality could be at fault.

Let me know if there's any information I missed that could help, thanks in advance!

Edit: Forgot to mention, all computers here are running linux.

Edit: I think the old pc is just maxing out at ~100 Mb/s, because I tried a new cable and it didn't change a thing.

Wirless APs or Mesh around the house?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:18 PM PST

I've just moved into a 4 storey house where my router is in the basement. I want to run a few cables up to my TV and office to wired for a few devices.

I then want a reliable wifi signal around the house but also in the back yard and in a detached garage. I was initially intending to install wireless PoE APs on the main floor and attic, positioned to hopefully reach the yard and garage. Now learning about mesh, I'm thinking that could solve my garage and yard coverage but my question is can i mix wired APs with mesh in a hybrid setup? Alternatively are APs overkill and would mesh be a more suitable and cost effective home option?

    Router Build

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:30 PM PST

I just bought a house, and I'm looking to do some IoT stuff around the place (cameras, smart devices, desktop, printer). I'm using Fios and getting 1GBps, and it seems to me there aren't really routers out there that work with Fios and support VLANs. I know there's the Ubiquiti Dream Machine, but I've heard mixed things about it.

As an additional motivation, my Frontier Arris router (which does not support the full gigabit connection) has started losing connection at random times. When I plug the incoming ethernet directly into my desktop, the problem goes away, so it seems that this router is an issue.

So I'm looking to make my own router, and would like a second set of eyes on it, because I'm very new to home networking:

    Motherboard: ASRock J6050-ITX

NIC: RIITOP 2-Port 1000M PCIe Express NIC

    RAM: 8GB 260 pin

    SSD: 128 GB

    Wireless AP: Cisco WAP?

And I'd stick PFsense on this and buy a managed switch that supports VLANs.

So obviously the RAM and SSD are overkill, but their prices are already pretty low and it's hard to find smaller sizes for those. So, my questions are:

    • Am I wrong about off the shelf options for routers?
    • Does the NIC make sense? Are there good or bad options for NICs?
    • Does the motherboard make sense?
    • With the WAPs, do those just get plugged into the newly built router and work for wifi?
    • Can the Frontier router that I currently have be salvaged for any purpose? Not in the sense of literally taking it apart, but more so in potentially being used for wifi or something.
    • Is there anything in this that I'm forgetting, or any other suggestions you have?

I'm sorry if these are questions that have obvious answers; I've read a number of threads here and on related subs that discuss building routers, and while I'm understanding more and more, I'm still a long ways off from really being confident enough to order parts. Sometimes just getting direct input is the thing to do.

Do I *need* to use this telus wifi hub?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:57 PM PST

I have fibre in my home through Telus: https://imgur.com/a/xmoKgf9

I have the Nokia modem to accept the fibre signal, and a Telus wifi hub/router.

I'd like to NOT use the telus wifi hub, but it seems it's needed for me to get any internet?

Can I not plug a gigabit switch into the nokia modem's activated port and use that to activate all ethernet ports in my home?

Or have I been out of the loop, and I do in fact need a router before a switch?

I do want to have a wifi router in my home setup, but this way... it forces me to put it in my garage, which is basically the basement of my townhome?

    Problem with wifi in apartment

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:04 PM PST

Due to how there is only one coax in my apartment I need to have my modem and router in the TV stand, and because of where the apartments breaker box and wahser/dryer is located, there is a huge dead spot of wifi right where our tech room is. I have tried a wifi extender, but it only marginally improves the speed after I found the best spot for it.

I just ordered a powerline adapter kit from Amazon, and hopefully my wiring works well with it. I wanted to know though if I could hook the powerline into a switch, and then to a wifi extender. I would wire up our gaming pcs, and I would like to have enough ports to connect a Nas when I get the money together.

What switch should I buy if the powerline works, and if it doesn't end up working, what could I try next?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:48 PM PST

So I got the netgear at a discounted price brand new in box and it is having a ton of issue one being that the actual wifi band permanent drops after a while. Would making it a AP and connected it to my linksys still have it cause that issue?

Also which firmware is the best for wrt1900ac. I have an older version of openwrt installed

TP-Link AV1000 TL-PA7017 KIT alternatives to tlPLC utility

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:33 PM PST

TP-Link makes available a utility called tlPLC that provides an interface to their powerline networking devices. It runs on macOS, where it requires root access to install itself, and Windows.

Does anyone know of an alternative utility for accessing diagnostic information from these devices?
This project https://github.com/qca/open-plc-utils seemed promising, but it does not seem to work. It is likely that the devices in TL-PA7017 KIT use a different chipset. I was not able to locate any technical details, so if anyone has information, that would be great.

High Internet Speeds with High Ping

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:55 PM PST

I Currently have 100 mbps download 25mbps upload internet but have been having slow speeds for quite a while, I thought the issue was distance from my router as my room is on the 3rd story loft of my home while the router is in the basement, so I had extenders put in, this somewhat fixed the speed problem as I know usually get 40-60 mbps download and 8-10 mbps upload but Im still having getting really high ping which is causing me to lose connection to my online classes and when Im gaming with friends

Is their any solution to this or perhaps a way to setup a stronger connection to my main router

sharing computer internet with a laptop

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:50 PM PST

I have a computer that is connected to the internet by a long ethernet cable and I'd like to know if I can just connect a short ethernet cable between the computer and a laptop to give the laptop internet.

I think it's possible, but is there anything I should know about doing this?

One of two computers on the same Ethernet setup is all of a sudden much slower than the other

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:43 PM PST

basically both my modem and router are in the garage and i cant use a straight ethernet cable. So i decided to use powerline. The problem is i have 2 pc's in the house, one pc gets more speeds than the other. the best pc gets around 20mbps+ and the worst one only get around 6.6mbps download speeds. both ping and upload speeds are the same just the download speeds are different. both pc's using a cat 5e cable, and i even tried with a cat 6 cable but still the same results. how can i get the same speeds as the best pc on the worst one?

    10G Switch with Aggregation

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:41 PM PST

    Hi guys!

At the moment I have a Unifi setup that I am happy with but I would like to add a 10G switch.

Since Ubiquiti does not offer what I am looking for I came here in the hopes you guys know of a product that fulfills the following prerequisites:

    • 12 or more RJ45 10G Ports
    • 2 or more SFP+ Ports
    • Aggregation feature (on the SFP+ Ports) that is compatible with Aggregation from Unifi
    • Rack-mountable
    • costs less then 1K€

The thing I am most unsure of here is, if the Link-Aggregation feature that Unifi offers through there controller is compatible with NON-Unifi gear.I will obviously have to configure the Aggregation of the ports on the NON-Unifi switch via the console (or management software should it exist) but I am unsure if such a combo would even work.

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Edit: after a bit of googling it seems like Link-Aggregation is standardized under IEEE802.3ad (IEEE 802.1AX since 2008) so I guess it should work fine - still I would really like to get confirmation from somebody on this

    R6700v3 keeps restarting itself

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:11 PM PST

Title. Tried different outlets but the router keeps randomly resetting itself multiple times throughout the day. Logs just say "Internet disconnected" and "Internet connected." I've already verified my modem is sustaining connection. I've also tried a factory reset and upgrading firmware. I really like the router itself and don't want to return it but this is giving me a headache. Any advice?

    Fiber optic networking / help

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:22 PM PST

    Fiber optic PON network

I have Comcast, and I constantly have issues with my network. I had them come over and check the modem. So that they can replace it. They told me they don't replace fiber optic modems because they are expensive.. he did a network test and said that I'm getting the 200Mb/s that I'm paying for, but I'm only see 35Mb/s whenever I download anything. I understand the complexity of downloading from servers and how that relates to speed. Although I am getting a constant signal drop from the WiFi. I have no idea how this network is configured. I live in an apartment complex so the signal drop could be cause by interference.

Just to keep the story short I'm tired of hear the bullshit spewing from Comcast technicians. So I'm going to take control of my own network by buying my own equipment.

BUT, I can't find any modems with a PON connection. Nor do I know a whole lot about fiber optic networks. I was a major nerd in high school, but that was 10yrs ago.

So now I just need help finding a modem that supports a PON connection or have a way to convert it to whatever connection is required.

    TL-SG1016PE Switch dead port?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

    Hello everyone.

So a week ago I got a Tp-Link TL-SG1016PE "Easy Smart" switch to power some Ubiquiti access points.

Everything was working fine, until today when one of the non POE ports stopped passing traffic. What I find interesting is that the switch will both detect the link presence and auto-negotiate the proper link speed to the connected device. Traffic just won't go though that port.

I've already tried disabling VLANS and swapping both cables and computers without any luck.

Do you know about any other setting that might be keeping traffic from going though? Or perhaps the port's controller might have just died (simply in an odd way)?

    Thanks everyone in advance.

Wifi 6 vs wifi 5 for local lan gaming

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:05 PM PST

Hi all, I've just move house and am looking to install a wifi mesh system.

I have a few questions about the ideal set up.

I'm tossing up between wifi ac and ax.

The main use will be for wifi LAN between the home office ( which doesn't have a phone line) and the lounge. The priority use would be for co-op gaming and streaming from devices.

I'll be trying to use the lan ports to attach most of my devices ( PC, consoles, TV).

The signal has to travel through 4/5 walls.

In the real world, is there much difference between the backhaul and does wifi improve latency?

Are there any devices you would recommend?

As we are renting, going hardwired isn't an option.

    Asus Merlin Firmware AIMesh Issues

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:47 PM PST

I've got two asus routers, an AC68U running Merlin 384.18 and an AC66U running the same firmware. I have put the 68U as the mesh router and the 66U as the mesh node but the 68U never picks it up when I scan for it. On top of that the 68U is working properly (everything connects and gets internet) but the network map doesn't show any devices.

After multiple failed attempts today to try to get it to working I decided to downgrade the 68U to Merlin 384.13 but it won't revert back - it gets all the way to the end and says complete but after reboots and factory resets it still says its running 384.18. Are there known issues with this firmware? Should i do a hard reset? is there a step i'm missing

If I was to go back to Asus stock firmware, is there a version I should go back to? I have a recollection of reading that one of the firmwares onwards was hard to get back to merlin if desired.

    Thanks in advance

    IPv6 Subrouting

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:36 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've been using a Ubiquiti ERPOE-5 to isolate my home lab. It's set up as a 10.1.2.0/24 network, with the WAN connected of a Comcast all-in-one. I'd love to replace the Comcast router with a simple modem, but that's out of my control. So far, IPv4 works great, my network is isolated, with WAN only used for connecting to the internet.

The problem is I'd like the ability to use IPv6. With IPv4, I can just use a subnet/NAT, but IPv6 is a whole new world for me. I'd like to use SLAAC, but from what I saw in the Comcast router's settings, it is only given a /64, which means I'd have to find some way to share it between the two routers. I tried just setting it up using this:
    https://community.ui.com/questions/IPv6-Setup/b3693114-bada-4b80-b980-7543a0073f5f
With this, and various other SLAAC methods I've tried, I'm able to get an IPv6 address on the ubiquiti router, but it doesn't hand any to devices I connect to it. The only options I have in the comcast router are to enable and disable stateful IPv6 assignment, and if it is enabled, the start end end addresses of the IPV6 ranges.

I looked into NAT66, and the internet seems to say:

    • don't do it
    • it doesn't work on ubiquiti very well

At this point I'm wondering if I should just set up firewall rules to forward all IPv6 (and dhcp6) traffic to eth0, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
