Can we get a sticky for network fundamentals, such as wired vs. wireless performance, etc.? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:58 PM PST Seems like people don't understand the fundamental differences between wired and wireless networking. I get it, not everyone needs to/wants to or cares to. But for home networking, and for everyone's' sanity, I think it would really help to have a basics stickied to the top of the sub. My thoughts: 1) Basics in wired vs. wireless networking 2) Powerline vs. MoCA vs. Wi-Fi extenders 3) Choosing network components - router, modem, wireless router, AP's, directional wireless equipment for point-to-point links, etc. What does the community think? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:04 AM PST I want to build a NAS home networking for the following purposes: It will only be for video and pictures. I am in the Mac ecosystem and my pictures are in Apple Photos, rather than my keeping them as loose pictures in folders. Can I stream them from the NAS server to my TV. I want to watch my home videos from my smart tv. Can I stream them wirelessly from my NAS with full quality? I shoot in 4K and want to watch them in my 4K TV. I keep my videos in folders loose. Do I need to connect my home server with a wire to my router? Can I have it wirelessly? I am simply thinking of a Synology server. I am aware of cloud based solutions, but none is for me. I want to keep my data in my own server. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:09 PM PST How can I cut off their internet/ slow it down without them knowing and them reseting the router, I would preferably like to slow it down. If they find out they'll yell at me, moving out is not an option I'm locked in for 6 months and they know that. Honestly I just wished they paid their bill. The router is a Optus Sagecom gateway F@st 5366 lte. Yes I'm Australian I'm not at University or anything (so they can't do anything) just in a share house with 2 other roommates both of which don't pay the bill for internet. Calling authorities isn't an option. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
ATT passthrough with Netgear Nighthawk Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:20 AM PST Hello everyone, I need some help. Im ripping my hairs out. TLDR at bottom So months back I got ATT fiber and the wired speeds were great coming from spectrum, but wifi was absolutely terrible. Losing connection in the same room the box was in, anywhere else was SOL of getting connection. Had tons of ppl over to rebury lines, re-install etc etc. but the issue persisted. Finally one of the workers suggested getting a wifi router and doing a passthrough. So I went and bought a nighthawk 1900 as I read a lot of good reviews about it. I did a ton of research and to the best of my ability, set up passthrough mode. Disabled the bgw210 wifi, firewall etc. to ensure I was not getting double NAT'd (?) either. (im not familiar with terms, only going off of what google brought me to when describing my issues) Wifi range and speeds were waay better, went from 40mbps to 200~ on wifi signals. Then all of a sudden the wifi was dropping again. My netgear Nighthawk power and internet lights would sometimes flash orange, while the bgw210 was still lit green. My 2g and 5g were split, so sometimes the 5g would go out and we would have to switch to 2g. All the while Ethernet connections were fine. Then just today, when working from home, my work wired connection went out, netgear internet light red, and the bgw210 lights all green but all connection was gone. I could only get to google on my gaming pc, but no other websites or wifi devices worked. I had no idea what to do so I did a factory reset on my bgw210 and everything works again, though the passthrough mode is gone. I wrote all this just in case something popped out to anyone reading. Could somebody walk me through a proper passthrough? I googled some that said to do cascade router option which I never did to begin with. Some say to make my IP public as I had purchased static IP from ATT due to a possible IP logger. Idk, if anyone could help me here or even on discord if its easier, I would be sooooo thankful. pls help TLDR: Purchased static IP blocks from ATT due to possible ip logger. (idk if that changes how to do passthrough) Had passthrough enabled but connection went bonkers, reset bgw210 to factory settings. Trying to get proper passthrough walkthrough with my nighthawk 1900. Port forwarding on university network with router Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:08 PM PST Hi! I'm trying to set up a Minecraft server on my university's network. I have a router (Linksys E2500) plugged into the Ethernet jack in my dorm. The server itself works, I can connect to it on a different computer on the local network, but not from the university network. I have tried setting up port forwarding with no luck. I've enabled the necessary ports on the host computer's firewall (the host is running Ubuntu 20.04) and checked that I have the correct IP for the host server in the port forwarding rules. But the port still shows up as closed on port forwarding checker websites no matter what I do. I've also tried ports under 10000 in case the university is blocking ports above that. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to network related things, so any and all help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Can't fit switch AC adapter in structured wiring panel Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:33 PM PST My structured wiring panel has a couple outlets at the bottom, but the AC adapter for my switch is such that I can't close the panel when it's plugged in. It doesn't fit if I try to flip it 180° either. Anything I can do, short of getting a different AC adapter or using an extension cord/power strip? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:24 PM PST For my home network I have a cable going from the router/modem to my office which goes to a a TP Link TL-SG105(basic unmanaged switch) I then have another cable from the SG105 going to a TL-SG108 that is built into my desk and has my PlayStation, desktop, and laptop all hardwired into. Today my all my devices connected to my desk 108 stoped working and will only work if I bypass the 105 and plug the router directly into the 108. I've tried other cables and they don't seem to have any issues. I also can plug my PlayStation directly into the 105 and it works fine. Both switches are unmanaged. I've had the 108 for about 2 years and recently got the 105 a few weeks ago with no issues. I'm curious if the two switches are causing interference with each other or if the 105 is just a dud that stopped working? I can provide more info as needed [link] [comments] |
Fastest speeds without additional PCI slot 1gbe+ Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:11 PM PST Hi, Im trying to figure out what i can acheive as far as networking speeds without the addition of any PCI cards. Both the server and computer that i would like to transfer between dont have any additional PCI slots, Both have m.2, usb 3 type a and c, and (probably irrelevant - u.2) ports available. Are there any options to get to 5gbe or 10gbe with any of those ports? or is it completely limited to a PCI card? [link] [comments] |
Cpu Spikes on AC66U cause Lag Spikes Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:54 PM PST Hi, I am trying to figoure out why anytime my cpu on my AC66U goes over about 30% I get a lag spike. top shows me httpds -s -p 8443 -i br0 is using the most cpu but only about 4-8% and all other processes show <0%. Temperatures are nominal about 60C. I have also attempted to overclock the cpu and I still get the same results. cpu spikes with no indication of where it is coming from. [link] [comments] |
Use router instead of a switch Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:53 AM PST So I was planning on buying a switch to get extra ports on another room but I realised that I also needed a WAP and finding a decent one gets pricey. Is using a router with multiple LAN ports and wifi a good idea? It is cheaper [link] [comments] |
Listen on all interfaces BUT a VPN tun interface Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:23 PM PST Hello all! I'm familiar with listening on localhost In this situation, I'm connected through a VPN and I want to have my application (an http server for a example) listen on all interfaces BUT not the tun0 VPN interface. A workaround would be to block input traffic with iptables but I'm wondering if there is a way to achieve this using the listening address Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
IP camera has two IP addresses on my local network Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:12 PM PST I picked up a Chinese IP camera that I wanted to restrict from accessing the internet (and access from home or VPN into my LAN). On my router, I assigned a specific IP address to the camera's MAC address and blocked it from using internet. A day later I noticed another IP on my DHCP client list. I typed the IP address in a browser and sure enough it's my Armcrest camera (it has a webserver accessible from any browser). I checked the static IP and was able to access there as well. So looks like this camera has two addresses on my local network. Is this normal? What is going on? The camera is only connected through wifi, not ethernet. Might be worth mentioning that I have a main router (Archer C7) running dd-wrt with wifi disabled, and an Asus TM-AC1900 running stock firmware in access point mode, centrally located for better wifi coverage. The camera shows up on the ASUS access point wifi client list with IP 1.1.1.174 and shows up as static 1.1.1.10 on the dd-wrt. Both have the MAC address, and both IP addresses bring up the camera's GUI on a browser. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:03 PM PST I have at&t fiber and it is running off of the BGW210-700 and it is absolute garbage. I have a 1800sqft house and can't even use the WiFi on my porch or in the guest bedroom. I have never had internet that used one of these combo things. How do I add a router or replace it with an aftermarket router. The house is old so there are some plaster walls but this is ridiculous. Thank you for your help [link] [comments] |
Motherboard with built CPU as a pfSense firewall router Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:24 PM PST I am planning to build my own pfSense firewall router. Gigabyte GA-J1800M-D3P Motherboard(Built-in Celeron J1800 - 2.41Ghz Dual Core Processor/DDR3/D-SUB and HDMI / PCIE x16) Is this Mobo cpu combo good for creating a pfSense router. My internet speed is 100 up and 100down and backup internet is 50up and 50 down. The motherboard has a realtek LAN port and I have heard this many times that realtek LAN cards are not well supported by freebsd/pfSense. The Mobo cpu combo doesn't have AES-ni and I don't need it bcz I won't be using any VPN on it. Also, I am planning to buy an intel dual lan PCIe card so that I can use Mobo LAN port as WAN1 and intel dual LAN ports as WAN2 and LAN port going directly in my tp-link managed switch. Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:59 PM PST Just went through the hassle of Spectrum's self installation kit. I opted out of bundling internet and wifi to avoid hidden fees so they just sent me an Arris SB6183 modem. Got it all hooked up, now I'm just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a router that would be optimal with this particular device. Also, is anybody familiar with what information I may need to pry from my ISP in order to facilitate successful communication between the two devices? Thanks all. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet Wiring from modem to bedroom through the attic Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:56 PM PST In short, I'm Looking for the best way to do this. I am planning to run a solid cat6 from the modem, into the wall, through the attic, and back out through the wall in a bedroom. I'm planning on getting a solid copper cat6 riser, the wall plates, and the little punch down jacks for the solid cat6. What recommendations do you guys have of going about this? This is my first time running any wire in my house personally so I'm new to all this stuff. I'm doing all this for the PS5 that comes out next week because of how much of a difference I saw when connecting my PS4 through an Ethernet cord. Any tips or recommendations would be very appreciated 👍 [link] [comments] |
Best practices and/or recommendations for LAN domain/dns resolution Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:36 PM PST Hello dear community, I'm a long time lurker of r/homelab and this subreddit and after alot of time of reading I'm finally setting up my homelab and I've read over and over and tried to get inspiration from other people's config but I'm still not fully convinced on how to do this. Everything has an assigned static IP through the pFsense DNS resolver for internal and all outside queries go to cloudflare DNS. Currently my pFsense setup is the following: This means all my devices use <hostname>.dc-home.x Note: <hostname> or <subdomain/hostname> is relative and for things such as switches/APs/etc they are defined by me in pfSense and my computers and mobile devices use their OWN advertized hostname accompanied by .dc-home.x The ideology is that I'm using a hybrid of local/cloud so that would mean my home stuff will use <subdomain/host>.dc-home.x and my cloud stuff <subdomain/host>.dc-cloud.x. What boggles my mind is from what I've seen no one seems to be using the format of a <subdomain/host>.<domain>.<whatever> and it makes me thing, am I doing this right? For example my hostnames are set in pfSense but they are also redundantly configured on my network devices in the same way because of my OCD. Upon trying to setup the same ideology on my ASUS/Merlin router, it does not let me, which makes me think I might be doing something wrong? So I am really open to ANY kind of suggestions on how I should setup my LAN/CLOUD hybrid internal domain, all external services will be exposed thru a subdomain of my real website. Extra note: I'd also like for the future have hostnames for my VMs in respect to their physical host. THANKS and feel free to roast me if necessary! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:10 AM PST I have an old TP link router (with DD-WRT firmware) which I want to use as a wireless repeater using this video. But it was using the same SSID name. For debugging purpose I want to use a different SSID from my main network and also so that my wireless bridge does not interfere with my main network used by everyone in my house. How do I do this? And also how do I do 2 layers of such repeating using yet another old router(example my main router's SSID is net1, old router 1 creates SSID net2 which is then used by old router 2 to create final SSID net3) I know this will lead to a lot of latency. Please excuse my mistakes in networking terms since I am just a beginner. Edit- I got it. [link] [comments] |
My FIOS router no longer lets me make a static ARP entry, is there no way to WOL my PC? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:04 PM PST I have previously had to make an ARP entry in order to use a WOL packet to my PC, but I have since got a new Verizon FIOS router. On this new router I am unable to access it via SSH and add a static ARP entry for my PC. Is there no other way I can interface with my LAN card to trigger a Wake on LAN? [link] [comments] |
Router recommendation for around $100 Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:50 PM PST I need a router for my new apartment. The apartment is about 650 sq ft. I'll have 1Gig. I wanted to get an ASUS RT-ACRH17, I watched a review saying it good. But should I get something like TP-Link AX1800. Is it better? Do I need wifi 6? I don't think so. Ill have like 6 device connected to it, max. The ASUS has MU-MIMO. Only getting a gig because my only other real option is comcast 200mb/s for the same price. I just want a good router for around $100. Please explain why your recommendation is better than the ASUS. Like it's faster, more Ram, or whatever. Anything would help. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Cat 3 from fiber ONT to router? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:39 PM PST Weird, I know. New (to me) house, built in 2010, and it looks like a cat 3 cable fron ONT runs 15' before being spliced to cat 6. The cat 6 runs to the other side of the house and speedtests show 500/500, as I pay for. I didnt think this possible. If it works, keep using it? The cable is labeled "berk-tek lan grade 24 awg cmp 568-b.2 cat 3 4607 0666 ft" and is 4 pair. [link] [comments] |
Specific type of ethernet cable needed to connect AT&T ONT to Gateway? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:21 PM PST Recently got AT&T's Fiber Internet for my city brownstone apartment, problem is they could only put the ONT in my bedroom (along with the install guy's 1 ft cat6 patch cable to the Arris BGW210 gateway that AT&T forces you to rent from them but that's another issue), and my laptop on my desk 2 rooms over can only get 3 Mbps. Tried to move the gateway to the middle of apartment and connect it to the ONT with my 50 ft 5e ethernet cable, which is a bit old and has several bends but works fine between a modem and a PC, but it won't work--the light on the gateway that says "Broadband" is solid red, where with the short cat6 cable from AT&T it is green and WiFi is active. Anyone know if ONT connections only work with cat6 cables or something or why that is? [link] [comments] |
[Help!] First time with a dead spot Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:03 PM PST Hi all, a little in over my head and looking for support to remove a dead spot in my apartment. the space/issue: We just moved into a new apartment with a basement where I'll be working remotely full time. WiFi is weakest in that room (60-90Mbps down vs 300 everywhere else generally). I have no way to run Ethernet down there especially since it's a rented apartment. 1750 sqft space. the equipment Currently running an Asus RT-AC66U B1 and tried it as a standard router and with AiMesh (Asus proprietary Mesh network). Results are the same Purchased a year ago and didn't realize it's limitations then (was in a 850sqft apartment). Tried an Asus RP-AC55 with AiMesh and it didn't do much. Would like to stay within the Asus ecosystem but it's not required. my budget: Ideally hoping to solve this for $200-300 USD. the questions:
