Concerned about privacy - is it safe to buy a Lenovo laptop? Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:45 PM PST Hi all The incident regarding spyware etc with lenovo laptops are quite popular. Laptop for college student for the long run Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:58 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Under 800 CAD excluding tax. Are you open to refurbs/used? Refurbs definitely, but used ones tend to look very used, probably no. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Sturdy, reliable, for the long run (so no consumer laptops I presume) How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just college work (office, browing etc.) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft. I don't care about high graphics settings, but it'd be nice to have them. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really. If it does its job, I'm fine. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have done some research and found that a T470 or T470s would be great for my budget in refurbished laptops on sale on Bestbuy, please let me know what the differences between the two are and if there is any other thinkpads I can consider. My mind is pretty much set on Thinkpads as I believe they are the most reliable, and even if they are from 2017 they will probably do better than consumer laptops nowadays and last longer than them (correct me if I'm wrong). Reliable laptop for mainly gaming that’ll run on good quality and last a couple years. +- $1400 Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:44 AM PST (Found something Im satisfied with, no worries) I want a computer for myself in order to be able to play games, though due to my current situation I would much rather prefer it to be a laptop so its portable. I dont need anything insane like some 2.5k dollar laptop that can run anything, I mainly just want something that will run a decent amount or most games on high quality at 60 fps. The games Ill likely be playing on there would be World of Tanks, War Thunder, Hearts of Iron 4, Stellaris, and other similar games, so I want to know what would be best to buy in a price range of 1,200 dollars to 1,500 dollars. Non-gaming laptop suitable for some gaming? Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:47 AM PST Hello all! A bit of a background here. I'm 17 years old and saved up lots of money (around 2K) for just a good laptop. Howevere my financials are controlled by my father. He refuses to buy anything with the "GAMING" computer tag. So I'd need a computer that works well for certain games but not have that tag. My spending range is 1500-2000 CAD and I'd like to run games like Destiny 2 in somewhat good graphics. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:49 AM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
PREFERABLY: UNDER 150 USD PROBABLY: UNDER 200 USD
Hell yea. Anything that decreases the price. I am also open to buying batteries/chargers if necessary.
I am looking for a durable laptop, one that I can use without tinkering with it a lot. I also want a big screen. Battery life is lower on my priority list, but anything above 3 hours of use is fine. I am okay with dipping a bit below 5 hours. I want 4gb ram. I won't be doing anything too intensive but to my understanding anything below 4gb bottlenecks the computer to hell and back. How important is weight and thinness to you? . As long as it can fit in a bookbag or backpack, I'm okay with it. 14-16 inches is my sweet spot. I care a lot about having multiple tabs and windows open on my laptop so I'm okay with a bulky piece of metal. Make it 20 pounds, make it 10, I don't really care. I lift weights. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A My only preference would be 1080p, but I can understand it being below that and in the x 768 range. If it can fit in the 14-16 sweet spot I'll be a happy man Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? No for the first three. I am going to be doing some gaming, but mostly low-end IT MUST BE GOOD FOR LIGHT GAME DEVELOPMENT! I am thinking I'll write some scripts and debugging scenes in Ursina and Godot. Maybe some HTML projects as well. For those unfamiliar with these programs - as long as it's good and works with what I listed in the below section it should work for everything else. I won't use an intensive engine like Unity or Unreal for this laptop. I'm okay with waiting for compiling and Integrated graphics are fine as well All the games I am going to be playing are pre-2010. Integrated graphics will serve me fine.
PREFERABLY: The most intensive games I would be running would be an RTS like Starcraft II. I like playing on the lowest settings (lowest visual clutter) and I am fine with not being able to do that. Playing STALKER would also be nice but even my current pc stumbles with it. You won't hear this often but minecraft is also negotiable. Tabletop simulator would also be really nice to play, but I don't know good it is to use as a benchmark. Some more intensive games from before 2010 like the first few Hitmans or Spellforce 1 and 2 are also games I'm okay with giving up on. PROBABLY: Realistically, as long as it can run a game like MANHUNT, maybe some emulated games from dreamcast era and before I'll be fine. Maybe some pick-up and play games from before 2006 (Pre-xbox 360) as well. I'm thinking of Quake 1, DOOM 1 +2, THEIF, Turok. For 2d games, I also like pixel games like deadcells and streets of rouge and wizard of legend. But mostly I am going to be using it for schoolwork, I have a gaming desktop at my house that I don't want to replace anytime soon.
Low settings are fine for everything. If a game doesn't work in at least 30 fps I'm going to ignore it and save it for my other PC. I want to run these pre 2006 games at medium-high. I can do without fancy shadows. For emulation, it doesn't matter to me, I can downscale as long as the FPS can be consistent. I'm okay with slowdowns when rendering intensive stuff like blood spurts in illbleed (dreamcast) and loading in levels in Silent Hill 1. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I only care about:
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As you can tell, I'm not a very demanding guy. A big screen and a low price are the two big features I care about. A decent processor for programming would be great as well, but for the near future I won't be running any programs that are too intensive. Everything else is negotiable. I care more about PRICE instead of the PREFERABLY. I've been looking at some chromebooks and I'm not convinced. All of them are really small. I'm open to using one that is in the 14-16 inch range. I'd love a used thinkpad but I can't find any laptops in my price range. [link] [comments] |

roughly up to £1k, will consider really good options for a little over that.
no, and also its preferable for it to be available from mainstream stores like john lewis, argos or currys - im afraid im not sure i have access to anything too obscure (im broke and this is gonna be a gift from an older relative so i want them to be familiar with the seller lol)
performance, build quality, battery life/form tie - id consider a 2 in 1.
not too important
will consider anything but prefer medium-large
fairly heavy duty stuff but minimal gaming. i program a lot and cant rule out working with databases or machine learning in future. I'd like to be able to dual boot linux. i use art software and blender too.
n/a
i wouldnt want a terrible keyboard or touchpad. having a few usb ports would be nice
i dont like apple products. i joined the discord server but mainly got confused since all easily available machines are apparently terrible. [link] [comments] |

Ryzen 5 4600h/GTX 1650 8gb ram Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:14 AM PST I was originally going to get one with Intel i5 9300h, but it sold out, so would you recommend this for emulation (Dolphin, Citra, Cemu, old PS games, etc.), general use, and maybe some gaming and video editing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:36 PM PST Not answering the questionnaire as it doesn't apply to me. [~£800 UK] 14" Laptop Video Editing and Sleek Design Posted: 30 Nov 2020 03:49 AM PST I am wondering what options there are at this price range? Currently I have a really old PC with a pentium chip, 4GB ram and its p'ing me off. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2020 08:49 PM PST Current Laptop: Late 2009 Macbook (upgraded to 8gb RAM). It's actually quite fine for my general use, and it can handle the light video editing I do occasionally (almost all <3min audition videos, I'm an actor). Music production is ok too since I'm not doing a ton outside of voice + guitar/bass.....yet. Obviously the exporting for music/videos is quite slow, but it gets the job done. Just this past year I've started running into programs not being able to update because of the age of my computer. All that being said, it's 11yrs old, so I know I need to update. A big issue is I understand Macs very well, so I know if the price is good when looking on used sites, and I'm very familiar with gaming specs too, but when it's not a Mac or gaming specific laptop I have to look up every single one in order to even see what year it was released. A lot of the laptops being sold on Craigslist e.t.c.... will include the specs, and in the range I'm looking at I see a lot of 4th/5th gen i5/i7 CPUs, so I know to skip over those usually, but any other CPU I'm kinda in the dark. And almost none of the listings include the year, because they're all 7yr old+ garbage. I've checked out some budget laptop youtube videos, but a lot of them end up using something like an 8yr old Thinkpad or 2011 Macbook Pro. And it is kinda impressive how good they can be, but I know those types of laptops are going to be even more out of date in just a year or two, like my current laptop. I'd prefer something that could be good for the next 4-5yrs. So yeah, I'll take any suggestions for a new laptop, but also what should I search for/how should I filter my search when looking at Craigslist e.t.c..... to get the type of laptop I want? Thanks! EDIT: 3 USB ports would be ideal, but 2 is ok. [link] [comments] |
The best budget laptop in the market Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:56 PM PST I am talking about Lenovo Ideapad 3, this laptop has become the most selling budget laptop of 2020! It offers 8GB of DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, AMD Ryzen 5 3500u processor, 14-inch FHD display, and AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics. All of this under $450 The performance of this laptop is exceptional when considering the price, it can run many high-end games at 40 to 45 FPS. It has also beaten Acer Aspire 5 and Dell Inspiron 14-inch in the graphical test! If you are looking forward to buying a budget laptop that will make the job done, then I think Lenovo Ideapad 3 is a way to go! Read my detailed review here before buying! (Trust me it will help) [link] [comments] |

MSI GL65 Leopard 10SFSK VS HP omen 15 Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:49 AM PST Hey guys, I'm getting my first gaming laptop. I was about to pull the trigger on the Omen 15 and I got really excited for it but found out that i can get the GL65 Leopard for about the same price. I'm really into how the Omen looks but if the difference is substantial I might need to reconsider. It should be said that I'm not gonna do any heavy gaming, but I am looking forward to use the laptop for the next 5 years or so. The difference would be that for the same price I would be getting the RTX 2070 Super with the MSI instead of the 2060 with the Omen. It sounds like a no brainer but for some reason I'm not sure. The MSI would take a month of waiting until I get it whereas the Omen I could have tomorrow. I think I prefer the Omen 15 maybe for aesthetics but I want to know if it would be a silly move not to take the upgrade, again, depends on how substantial it is. specs: MSI I7-10750H RTX 2070 Super 16GB RAM Omen I7-10750H RTX 2060 16GB RAM Thank you very much! Looking for business/productivity laptop with budget of SGD2k Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:36 AM PST Budget & Country of Purchase: Singapore $2000 (~USD1500) Open to Refurbs/Used?: No Prioritisation: It should be sturdy, reliable and last for at least 3-5 years. It should have enough performance to handle MS Office, video calls and web browsing comfortably. Weight & Thinness: Thin and light will definitely be a plus and given that I'm not doing anything heavy, I don't see why this should be much of a compromise. Preferred Screen Size: 14" seems to be a comfortable spot, 13" is probably the smallest I would go. Programs: MS Office, video conferencing and web browsing. Any specific requirements: I/O which allows me to connect to a mouse, external display and ethernet simultaneously. A minimum of 512GB SSD, 1TB will be ideal and more will be a bonus. - The new base model M1 MacBook Air seems to be a good choice but as I am more used to Windows, that would be preferable. This new laptop will replace a Dell Latitude with 1TB storage (not sure which specific model). Thanks all for your help! [link] [comments] |
