    Simple Questions - October 31, 2020

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

It’s almost 3am and I just finsihed my first ever build

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 03:00 AM PDT

It's almost 3am and I just finsihed my first ever build. Pushing the power button and seeing the bios screen come up for the first time was indeed very satisfying experience.

Here is the spec I ended up with - parts

Overall, spent $1080 so far. I have a mix of used and new stuff in there: Used 3900xt for $300 Used DRP4 $50 Used GPU $35 (burner for a month or two, waiting for RDNA2 reviews) Prime day deals on PSU and MB.

Overall experience: Much easier than I thought its going to be. Plugging in all cables was the most time consuming part. The next hardest thing was keying in Windows 10 product key using virtual keyboard. Why? I totally forgot about getting a keyboard. The last time I had a PC with keyboard was 2002. Being used to laptop, never realized I'd need keyboard 😂. Luckily mouse came to rescue.

By the way, thanks to all the helpful posts around here. I too got help last week and I have been lurking for a while. Time to get some sleep.

    Pic

Edit: thanks for all the comments, awards and feedback, very much appreciated. Regarding windows, I needed an activated copy for office 365. I got it for a discounted price though $40, part of work perks. Also forgot to mention, I started build primarily for editing/workstation. Now I'm thinking of skipping Xbox refresh and invest in a good GPU instead. The one I have now is used R9 270X bought from FB market place

Flipping PC's: My experience selling computers this year.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:21 AM PDT

I had a lot of people commenting whenever I mention that I flip PC's, so I'm making a top post here about my journey this year and for anyone else who has thought about it. This is going to be long and maybe rambling, so I'll try to cut it into sections.

    Background.

I had flipped PC's in the past as a small side hobby (we're talking maybe 2-3 a year) whenever I'd see some good deals on either new or used parts. I have been lucky that it hasn't been a headache that others have reported, but I also try to be 100% transparent in every sale I make. My golden rule is that if I'm not comfortable using it, then I'm not selling it.

That said, at the beginning of the year I had decided I wanted to build a new pc by years end and saved about $1900~ to do so. I figured that was a good amount for a machine, but then I had an idea. What if I took that $1900, invested it in PC parts and then tried to increase my PC budget, maybe even allowing me a nice HTPC/couch gaming machine? So that's exactly what I did. Not all at once, but whenever I saw some parts that were affordable on used sites like hardwareswap, ebay or even marketplace, I would check out benchmarks (Oftentimes youtube PART NAME 2020 benchmarks) and watch the framerates, frametime etc.

    Getting started

My goal wasn't a set profit, but more of set price ranges. I'd make 1080p entry level machines for $350~ out the door, or maybe something more capable for $500~. Most common parts I would use for these were i5-2400,2500,3570 or i7 2600-3770 in used builds, and the super surprising 9100f or 10100 in the more expensive ones. These are all rather affordable and being patient on resale sites can net you a decent 1151 board for a good price. I even got lucky on a sale and nabbed a 3570/motherboard/8GB DDR3 for $47 on ebay once. 8GB of RAM was the bare minimum I would go with, but if I could I would boost it to 12-16GB (yes I'm aware of dual channel lost with a 4x8, but with the testing I did having 12GB out of dual channel was way better than just 8GB, and was the difference between playability and not for some systems).

For GPU's GTX 960s, 1050's, and RX 470's were the sweet spot for this range, a lot of times they can be found for $40-60. I did use a GTX 760 once, but that was for an ultra budget machine and I would not recommend them at this time to anyone, unless you're trying to spend less than $200.

For cases, I would almost always wait for cases to hit $30 or lower with free shipping and buy ones that interested me (Cougar MG110, Rosewill cases, DIYPC etc) because I also like to know what low cost options are out there for builders on this subreddit. I haven't gotten to use the deepcool mattrex, but I plan to eventually as another flipper I know swears by them.

90% of my builds always used a new PSU, Case and always a new SSD. I do not sell computers that don't have a new SSD in them, and generally try not to use used storage at all. That said, finding some good deals on 500-1TB drives ($5-10) and verifying their health with crystal disk was a good way to boost the storage, and therefore the value. PSU's were almost always 80+ Bronze EVGA's, except I did have a person who wanted a computer ASAP and agreed to a thermaltake 500w 80+ white. Since his system was an i5, gtx 1050 I was ok with it.

Motherboards I wasn't too picky on, seeing as the tech was old it was more about getting a good deal, verifying functionality and then testing it. This was the one that gave me the most headaches however, as multiple boards were DOA and I even had one that had an admin password that there was just no way to get around. I had to eat the loss on that one as I took to long to get to using it and was out of the return window. Lesson learned. Windows, let's just say that the flipping community is split on how to handle this and that some supporters have a grey mindset.

Whenever I was done building a system, I would install windows without activating, install some games, benchmark the hardware and then do a 24-48 hour burn in (time permitting). I would also capture gameplay footage to upload to youtube because hey, that helped me decide so maybe I can help others too!

If there were any parts that I particularly liked and I saw on sale (especially during the height of covid) I would buy 1-2 to have on hand to streamline the next build.

    The sales

Most of my success was on marketplace on facebook. I had a good reputation already built from my previous sales, so I think that helped make me trustworthy. After that, offerup was my next best resource, but I will say the clientele on that app is generally more apt to lowball or be straight up rude. When it came time to sell my personal PC (i7 4770k, 16GB DDR3 2133, NZXT H500, EVGA 600w 80+, RX 570 4GB STRIX, 1tB total SSD storage) I had it listed at $500 and had many offers for $200-250 "Right now" from offerup. Many weren't too keen to be told no. This did help my negotiation skills though, as I learned that many people did respect blunt answers instead of trying to be overly "customer service" oriented. After I had made a good amount of sales, I had a few referrals, which was pretty cool because hey people liked my work and suggested me to others! This lead to a few more sales and my first all-new build for someone. I have to say that doing an all new build was a bit more stressful for me as usually I was just putting my own money on the line and then tinkering, but to be using someone else's made me much more cautious than I already am.

During these COVID times I stopped having people in the house to see the computer boot etc, but instead would record videos of it functioning, showcasing todays date, time and saying the potential buyers name. This almost always worked out except the one time the buyer (on offerup) turned out to be a teenage kid who showed up with his parents and did NOT like that they didn't see the computer in action. Got a 5 star review though and haven't heard from them, so I assume they were pleased.

    Staying organized

If you're going to do this, I would strongly STRONGLY suggest you have a dedicated building area. This may not be a full fledged business, but you should still treat it as one. I bought a nice desk to work with and set up a dedicated computer building area in my office. What I would suggest for anyone who wants to do the same, here are the basics that I used the most:

    • Dedicated monitor
    • Extra mouse, keyboard, headset
    • Precision screwdrivers
    • Regular screwdrivers *Clip on light or headlamp
    • Zip ties
    • Computer Case screw sets (can be found on amazon for $7)
    • Toolbox
    • Set of different sized tweezers

Some of the above may seem weird, but my office doesn't have the best lighting so being able to move a light around to see inside of these smaller cases was nice. The tweezers were handy if a screw fell AND when I needed to do some cable management through very tight holes in the cases. Who would have thought that cheap cases wouldn't have the best management…

I created a google doc spreadsheet with headers for all the components where I would name the build (i5 2400 Rosewill FBM X2 etc) and then list out my price of the components, had the total cost to me, what I listed it at in another column, what it sold for, and then the profile of the person who I sold it to. Also any additional notes (This case was easy to work in, look for this motherboard again, provided email to this person as they said their brother may want a PC, follow up etc).

While I was actually building the PC's, when they were ready I just used the tried-and-true method of post it notes for computers that may have the same case etc. Labeling which one was which was nice because at one point I had 3 of the same cases/PSU/CPU/GPU and looking from the outside alone you could mix them up.

    Conclusion

So where did I end up? I started with $1900, and ended with a total revenue of $3820, however some parts I did lose money on. That motherboard I didn't return in time was $40, and there was about a build and a half that I wasn't satisfied with (Athlon x4 760's just don't cut it anymore) that I sold parts for a loss to tinkerers in the community, so the total profit is around $1800. The highest profit I had on one build was $182, the lowest was around $100. I would estimate that I spent no less than 100 hours working on all the PC's, and that includes sourcing parts, the build, taking pictures, writing the posts, listing on all marketplace apps (letgo, offerup, marketplace), negotiating and finally closing. there are other factors to consider as well, such as additional electricity usage, and gas if I had to locally pick up the parts, but those costs I'm not looking to quantify.

Regardless, I almost doubled my money for the PC that I wanted to build, while also trying out a load of components, building up a youtube channel, networking, and improving my entrepreneurial spirit. I even reconnected with a high school friend who I used to tinker computers with who is flipping PC's the next county over. We bounced some advice off each other and he's miles ahead of where I am, but it was fun to run into his posts and recognize the name.

Now would I suggest you do this? Maybe. I've been building for 15 years, and doing 15+ builds this year doesn't sound like a lot, but I also have a full time job, a wife and kids. This was a lot of extra work, albeit for a hobby I enjoy, but not every build was perfect and using my free time to troubleshoot something, that I used my own money on, to maybe make $100 could be tedious. If I truly didn't love building computers, I would have stopped shortly into doing this. Also, people skills are important, but as I said I was able to develop even more doing this. Patience is also another virtue, some computers I sold within hours of listing, but the exact same build may have taken 3 weeks and a price reduction to move. I wouldn't suggest someone who just built their first computer to jump into doing this, I'm not a perfect builder but I consider myself to be pretty good, have built around 100 computers in my time and try to keep up on the current PC trends. If you are a new builder and want to get into this, start by volunteering to help build friends PC's, grab some cheapos on craigslist and take them apart, put them back together, and do it again. Practice your cable management, taking pictures of your computer (good pictures sell computers faster), and read in this community a lot. Also be receptive to feedback!!! Like I said, I'm not a perfect builder myself and always am trying to learn.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability. Like I said, I'm no pro but I hope this at least helps someone!

I’m starting my build in approximately five minutes...wish me luck

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:41 PM PDT

    EDIT: Hey everyone...

Just wanted to pop in real quick to say that I didn't expect this post to blow like this, and that I am incredibly touched by the well wishes, and the kind words re: the family situation. You guys have really made for a fun and rewarding experience for me.

The build is going well. I've been trying to take some pictures as I go. I initially wanted to do the whole "epic DIY-style Reddit photo album that chronicles every little step along the way" thing, but I've admittedly missed a few.

Anyway....I'm going to hop in the shower and clear my head a little bit and then get back to the build. Thus far, things are going well. It's taken me longer than I anticipated, due to a few late-night phone calls (those are somewhat common these days....emotions running high and whatnot).

I promise I'll report back in a bit!

I have a feeling this build may be a bit of a pain at times...but I hope to report back with a pretty picture soon enough!

Been in I.T. for 3 years now and this will be my first build.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:31 AM PDT

This will be used for gaming, up to 4k video editing but mostly 2k, and some animation. I wanted to put the build in a position to where it was "more powerful" than an average build but still very much upgradable. I know words like "powerful" when speaking on a build is very subjective. But wat do you guys and gals think?

RTX 3080 Incoming... Upgrade current PC, or build new one?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:47 AM PDT

    Hi!

I finally have my RTX 3080 coming from EVGA, they have a nice Que system btw...

Should I be fine with upgrading my current PC with my new RTX 3080 (and PSU I just bought for it), or would I be better off going with a fresh build for the performance I am looking for?

My current PC I built in summer of 2017 and here is what I am working with:

    CPU: i7-7700k

    Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty Z270

    PSU: EVGA 550W => EVGA 850W GA*

    RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance (2X8 configuration) DDR4 3000

    GPU: GTX 1080 => RTX 3080*

    Monitor: AOC AGON 35" Ultrawide 3440x1440 @ 100Hz

I really like my monitor, so I'm not really looking to upgrade it anytime soon. My goal is just to max out frame rates at ultra on any game I play at ultrawide 1440p.

Right now, mostly playing a combination of the following:

    Star Wars: Squadron

    Battlefront II

    WoW: Shadowlands (when released)

    Overwatch

    Battlefield V

    CoD: MW

    Cyberpunk (when released)

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond and any suggestions are appreciated!

    Ryzen 5600x - Builds

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:20 AM PDT

Anyone looking forward to create a budget gaming rigg with the 5600x capable of running whatever fits your needs?

Me myself will build a combination between gaming & workstation to suit my competitive gaming in games such as LoL, CsGo and Call of duty. Whilst still be able to run auditor software and streaming.

I'm wondering if the B550, 1070, 16gb ddr4 With the 5600x will be able to run as for mentioned games at high settings, at least 144-240fps. Or what do you think it will be capable of?

System Turned off and GPU Sparked.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:40 PM PDT

Just had my system turn off all of a sudden and power button not responsive, turned off PSU and turned it back on, GPU sparked a few seconds after the power button was pressed. GPU was a Radeon single fan 480 8GB. When I looked at the card the middle pin on the 78M05GRPH17 chip was missing.

Card usually fairly cool, my case allows my CPU to keep at a constant temp of 45C or less with a top blowing cooling. I have it connected directly to the wall and a friend of mine told me that a Brown out protector would help with random surges. Apparently they are inside of APS UPS systems. Anyone know of a brand or way I could avoid this in the future? I had a spare GPU on hand so the system is running, and waiting on a new GPU to come in the mail.

    Forgot to add the specs

Should I be getting higher fps? (3090)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT

Should I be getting more fps? (3090)

    • MSI 3090
    • 32GB RAM
    • I9-10850K
    • 3440 x 1440
    • 850 PSU
    • my temperatures are fine

Basically what the title says, I have an MSI 3090 and I feel like I should be getting higher fps in the games I'm playing. I only get around 70fps (sometimes 60) when playing Red Dead 2 on ultra settings. With Legion I'm almost never over 65 fps, sometimes dipping to 45. Even on a game like 2K, I only get 70. Is their something I'm doing wrong, I'm even overclocking.

Cases to keep noise as low as possible while gaming ? (Fractal Design ?)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:18 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm currently looking for a case (ATX or mATX) to build my first PC but I seem to have a fairly unpopular opinion if I believe what the brands are selling :

    • I don't like tempered glass/window
    • I don't like RGB

I was looking for a case that would be a dark shade of grey (think about Apple's Space Grey) or black.
I had interest for the Fractal Design cases (Define 7, Define R6 USB-C) because I think they look great and they fit the bill but then I saw some reviews like Gamers Nexus one that tend to advice to avoid those cases when you are going for a air cooled build.

As this is my first build, I really can't go for an AIO or a custom loop, I will have to go for the classic air cooling and thus I wonder if Fractal Design Define cases are a good idea or not..?

I also saw the Meshify C that seems to be fairly recommended by airflow enthusiast but I am just wondering whether or not it might be noisy during gaming sessions ?

I am going to install my setup right next to the living room and thus have to keep the thermals okayish for the system to perform as expected and the noise down to avoid getting people mad :)

Thank you for your help !

Can someone help me understand brightness vs constraint and what I need to look for in a monitor for a bright room?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:18 PM PDT

EDIT: s/constraint/contrast in the title. Bloody autocorrect...

I originally posted this in /r/monitors, but it got auto-deleted with a bot response that I should post in the weekly help thread or another subreddit like this one. I tried the weekly thread and got 0 replies, so here's hoping I have more luck here...

I've seen a lot of people being down on the LG27GL850 because of its poor (< 1000:1) contrast. I was thinking that would mean it wouldn't work for me, as I have my office/PC gaming room in the conservatory, which in the day (particularly in the summer) is quite bright. One of the reasons I want a new monitor is that with my current one reading text is fine, if sometimes a bit washed out, but gaming or watching videos can be really hard when the sun is bright, even with all the blinds closed (I just don't have room anywhere else in the house for my setup).

But when I was looking up specs of my current monitor (Dell 2408WFP), I noticed also the brightness value (400 cd/m2). I have the brightness set to 60/100 in the OSD because it just looks crap at higher than that. I was quite surprised that the LG and various other IPS monitors I looked at didn't have higher brightness values.

If I want to get a monitor that I can see more easily in my office, is it brightness I need to pay attention to more than contrast ratio? Is it even possible to get monitors with significantly higher brightness values? I had a look at the Samsung Odyssey G7, and various other monitors, and they all seemed to list 2 values in the specs, brightness and peak brightness. Most were the same or worse than my current, e.g. the GL850 is brightness 350, peak 400, and the G7 is 350/600 (I guess it's likely the 400 for my 2408 is peak, but I can't find anything that lists any other value).

I've no real idea how colour reproduction will compare between my current monitor and a modern one of any specific type (IPS/VA/TN). If I do need better brightness, it looks like maybe VA is the way to go? But I really don't want a curved monitor and most of the VAs seem to be curved. My thoughts for spec were 27", 1440p, 120+Hz, but beyond that I just want to try and find the one that'll work best for my setup and won't look obviously like it has much worse colours than my existing monitor or anything.

    Rate My Build?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:09 PM PDT

First attempt at building a gaming PC since I'm lowkey sick of console gaming lmfao.

Main reason the 3000 series isn't the video card is because I can't be bothered to buy from the 5 second window they're available. Maybe in a year or so when they're more available, I'll buy a 3080 or something. But for right now, here's my build.

    Can i use a rtx 3070 with a 500 w psu?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 01:56 PM PDT

    Hello, i have:

ryzen 5 3600, 2x8 gb 2666mhz ram, tuf b450m plus gaming motherboard, cooler master 500w elite v3 psu, and gtx 1650 super.

I want to upgrade to the rtx 3070 but i don't know if it is enough. i calculated the psu usage with the rtx 3070 and it told me that they recommended 440w of psu wattage. I checked my psu +12v and it said 456w. I am not gonna do any overclocking. will i be able to run use it?

Ps: i saw a video of someone using a 3950X and RTX 2080 Ti on a 450w psu. heres the video: https://youtu.be/wg6pz7YTxyA

I built it and it ran perfectly. I then did cable management and the problem started.

I did cable management for my CPU fan cords. It's a CORSAIR H100i RGB. I then plugged my PC back in and a loud noise started coming from the CPU and the monitor said CPU FAN ERROR. What is happening here?

Edit: the loud noise was a twist tie I forgot to cut that was hitting the fan blade. The fan issue was the fan connector plugged into CPU_OPT on accident instead of CPU_FAN

RTX 3070 or 2070 Super with EVGA "Step-Up" Program?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:32 AM PDT

So I currently have a GTX 1070, and I wanted to buy myself the RTX 3070. However I was unable to buy it from Best Buy online no matter how many times I refreshed the page or tried to get into my cart, and sold out within seconds. Or hours, I think. Anyway, does anyone think I should just give up on the 3070 and just buy an RTX 2070 Super from EVGA using their step up program or just hold onto my gtx 1070 and wait until the RTX 3070 or any of the 3000 series are back in stock? I'd like to hear your guys' feedback. Thanks.

    Aptx-LL pci-e card?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:19 PM PDT

Does anyone know about an aptx-ll compatible pci-e card? I don't need wifi, or anything else. I'm currently using a 5 year old bluetooth 4.2 card, and the delay is almost half a second. This didn't bother me in most things, as video playback adjusts for it, and I don't play any competitive games. However, I just tried some atpx-ll headphones on my phone, and just like I can't go back to wires, I can't go back to the half second delay anymore. I've been scouring the web for a solution that's more permanent than a usb dongle, but I just can't find anything that promises aptx-ll. That's why i came here, to the genius masterminds, the allknowing redditors, in hope of a solution. Anything helps! Thanks!

    Power Supply for new GPUs

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:32 AM PDT

I have a 650w PSU. From my understanding, Nvidia's 3070, and AMD's 6800 are good to go. Will the 6800 XT perform fine on a 650w PSU?

Talk me out of a non-G-sync compatible monitor

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Hey, sorry for posting another G-sync question, but I just need a sanity check. I recently built a system and to save money purchased a 24" 1080p 144Hz monitor. I specifically made a point to purchase the AOC G2590FX because it was G-sync compatible.

I'm now in a position to buy a better monitor and hand down this one to my son. I would like to bump up to a 32" 1440p with 120-144Hz, but all G-sync compatible options (per nVidia's site) are $500-600+. Sales on monitors that are not listed as G-sync compatible are much less ($350-400).

Will I regret going back to a non-G-sync monitor? I don't have any gaming experience without one, so I just don't know... and I'd rather not make a $400 mistake. Thanks for the feedback.

(Other consideration: I have an RTX 2060, which might not be able to run 1440p at a high enough frame rate to justify a higher refresh rate monitor. I've been advised to not go with a 32" 1080p.)

    Gaming PC build recommendations

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:15 PM PDT

Hey guys - been sent here by my brother who found this community very helpful when building his PC last year!

I play on Xbox currently, mainly FPS (COD Warzone at the moment) and have been toying with the following build:

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/f7TgJf

I have an LG Ultragear 27-GL850-B monitor already so unless there's grounds for upgrading that, I'd rather focus on the processing etc.

    Budget is £1.5-2k

My brother mentioned perhaps looking at a larger SSD than the 250gb as games now (especially WZ) are huge and it's preferable putting them in the SSD..

Overall, what do you guys think of the build and is there anything I've not thought of?

Thanks in advance for the help!
