Hp omen 15 vs legion 5

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Hi guys I'm thinking between both laptops and they have ryzen 7 4800h and gtx 1660ti but the omen is $200 more and I hear that it has bad build quality because of the screen flex.

Please help me decide between these two laptops

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:03 AM PDT

I need a laptop for graphic design and 3ds max. Here are the configurations

    Acer laptop NH.Q9HEX.009 15,6"/AMD Ryzen 7/16 GB/512 GB/UEFI Shell

    vs

    Laptop Acer 15.6" NH.Q96EX.00M i5-9300H/RTX 2060/8 GB/512GB SSD

I don't know what's more important for photoshop/blender/3dsmax. A good CPU or a good GPU?

1st configuration has a great CPU, more RAM but a weaker GPU. 2nd configuration has a great GPU but a much weaker CPU and only 8GB RAM (but let's ignore that because I can add 8GB more).

So I'm thinking the 1st one is better for my needs. Thoughts?

What ThinkPad model for Ubuntu use?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 03:24 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Could reddit brains trust please recommend a good thinkpad laptop to purchase to install ubuntu on? I (have to) use a Windows Dell laptop for work which is very high spec so this one would be secondary and for personal use. Budget around $4-500AUD ($290-$360USD) maximum, Ideally less. I do like aesthetics, I like the slick look of X1 carbon but seems that's a bit higher price range.

I once had a refurbished x230 but it broke after couple of months. It was ok but would like something a bit slicker.

I'm also not a fan of touch screen - unnecessary and I never use it.

    Many thanks!

Please help me choose between the following laptops. I will need to run CAD software and Programming IDEs as well as some games.

    HP Pavilion Gaming 15.6-inch FHD Gaming Laptop (Ryzen 5-4600H/8GB/1TB HDD + 256GB SSD/Windows 10/144Hz/NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB/Shadow Black), 15-ec1052AX-(https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B08CYZDZVM/)

    HP 15-dk0269tx Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15.6 inch (9th Gen Intel Core i5-9300H/8GB/1TB HDD/4GB GTX 1650 Graphics/Windows 10/FHD) - Shadow Black-(https://www.amazon.in/HP-15-dk0269tx-Pavilion-i5-9300H-Graphics/dp/B08DXLZFPR)

Both of them are from the HP Pavilion series but one of them has a Ryzen 5 4600H and the other has i5-9300H . What is the difference and which one is better?

But it is entirely possible that other good choices exist. Please let me know. I have filled the form below:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. :

    • Rs. 75000 , India

    • Are you open to refurbs/used

    • No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not very important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

    • N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • CAD (Solidworks,AutoCAD) IDEs Games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Best as possible , but CAD higher requirement I think they overlap

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • no fingerprint reader will use mouse most of the time so its okay if the trackpad is clunky

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • 1TB with 256 GB SSD preferred. Please optimize for longevity.

Looking for a good laptop for school

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 06:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
(CAD) Around $1000 would be good. Can go about 100-200 over nothing too crazy
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
The touchscreen would be nice. Doesn't need to be 2-in-1 and build quality should feel good so no plastic build, please. Performance-wise I think an AMD Ryzen 5 or equivalent would be good. Around 6 hours of battery life on basic tasks like google docs and Spotify is important for me as it's mainly for school. I won't be gaming on this very much as I can use Parsec to stream my PC from home.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important. Shouldn't be too heavy or too thick either. But I'd rather have a thick laptop over a heavy laptop.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15 Inches is kind of big but I can make do. 11, 13, 14 should be okay. 13 is preferred.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No just basic computer stuff. Maybe some older/indie games which should be able to run fine. (GTA Vice City, Hotline Miami, etc..)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      nope nothing specific.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard is a must as I will typing A LOT. Good build quality is also important as it will be transported in my bag all day when its not being used. Touch screen, as stated above, would be a nice touch (pun not intended) and finger print reader is not needed as long as the optical drive. If possible a windows precision trackpad is nice but I doubt any laptops these days come without it.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad X13. Here's the config I made.
      • Ryzen 5 4650U, 8GB 3200mhz soldered ram, 128gb pciE ssd, 13.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, touchscreen, 300 nits, IR camera. It does total upto $1220 before taxes though. Might drop it down to a Ryzen 3.
    • Another option I had was the Lenovo Flex 5. Here's a link.

    Thanks Guys!

Teacher looking for daily use - Have had two duds so far

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 10:25 AM PDT

I'm looking for the most durable laptop possible. I recently bought an HP Envy and it overheated like crazy, hitting 111C from light web browsing. I returned it and bought a Dell Inspiron which turned out to have a broken fan and a broken webcam right out of the box. I'm at my wits' end and just desperate to find something that will work.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Max $1200
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality and battery life are very important to me. I'm interested in a 2-in-1, but it's not vital.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Moderately. It's not the most important thing, but I do need to lug it around a bit.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Under 17"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not really. Sometimes I play the Sims.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      The Sims...
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Really really reliable build quality. Need HDMI port, headphone jack, and built in webcam and mic.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Really having a hard time finding something without very loud and ineffective fans. Anything that has a good reputation for working thermal system would be great.

Laptop for Work, Data Science and light gaming : 1700 EUR in France.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:51 AM PDT

Hello people who know the intimate details of the hardware \o/

Hope all is well for you, care to share some wisdom?

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1700 EUR, France
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Life expectancy, Build quality, Performance, Display & keyboard quality, Battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Data Science, Machine Learning Python and Jupyter, (won't go C or Java).
Might need CUDA at some point, I want to leave that option open.
Plan on adding a UNIX OS, through either virtualisation or partition (Open to advices on that :) )
Work : (Freelance Product Owner) Daily transport and use of Mails, APIs, Jira, MS Office, Zoom, etc.
      Gaming : Roughly 7 hours / week
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mainly low requirements games (Hades, X-Com EW, Helldivers...)
      Civilization 5 & 6, Divinity OS
Would be a plus if laptop could run the upcoming CyberPunk at 60 FPS, but not willing to pay over 400 EUR on overall price for this, I'd rather have more RAM.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Nice Keyboard:
ThinkPad keyboard is my favorite, for coding especially, but atm ThinkPad prices in France for the specs I'm looking at, are well above budget.
      Experienced and loved XPS Keyboard.
Did not like MSI keyboard on a GT73VR 7RE, excellent for gaming but felt clunky for coding.
No touch screen. Good screen quality (not OLED is OK)
Solid overall, been used to Thinkpad T: have yet to accept that all laptops are not as indestructible.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
After first analysis and investigations around, min. requirements for my intended use seems to be :
      - i7, 9th or 10th Gen, 6 cores
      - 16 Go RAM
      - 512 Go SSD NVMe
      - 4 Go Nvidia Card (CUDA)

    • So far, I'm considering these laptops, but I'm open to new suggestions:
      - MSI GS66 Stealth
      - i7- 10750H
      - 16 Go RAM
      - 1To SSD
      - RTX 2060 (6 Go)
Amazing specs, bit afraid of keyboard and life expectancy otherwise first choice. Planning on upgrading to 32Go RAM.
      - DELL XPS 15
      - i7- 9750H
      - 16 Go RAM
      - 512Go SSD
      - GTX 1650 (4 Go)
Very nice but GTX 1650 not so great, attracted by build quality and work-oriented, specs lower than MSI for slightly higher price though.
      - DELL Vostro 7500
      - i7- 10750H
      - 16 Go RAM (16 Go, 8 Go integrated + 1 SODIMM module, 8 Go of DDR4 memory at 2 933 MHz)
      - 512Go SSD
      - GTX 1650Ti (4 Go)
Amazing value for money, terrified about overall build quality, especially screen.

    Some more info:
Looking at optimizing value with current budget.
I have a time constraint so I have to make this purchase in the coming week.
Don't know anything about the throttling process besides its existence.
Don't know how to find out what will be the laptop's bottlneck for performances.

    Main questions right now:
Overall is the XPS the one with the best build quality of all choices ?
XPS are known to heat a lot, will the seemingly better cooling solution of MSI ensure that the GS66 outlasts the XPS 15 ?
    Is Vostro a thing ?

ASUS TUF GAMING A15 - is there a better choice? (urgent)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:11 PM PDT

Yesterday I bought a TUF A15 for 1,000€ on impulse partially because of the frustration that choosing was taking too long, and partially because I couldn't compare their displays properly due to the strong ceiling lights.

Now I have 2 weeks to return it, but I'm gonna need it much sooner than that so I'm asking for help to decide quickly (within the next 24h would be best).

At the time I was torn between this and Asus Vivobook 15, which had similar specs: same CPU, memory and graphics card (GTX 1650). Actually, I don't need a graphics card this good, nor 144Hz refresh rate, nor backlit keys, so if there was a laptop with the same price lacking those things but having a better display, I'd way prefer the display.

Having a good screen is important for me, and yet all of the laptops there seemed equally terrible in terms of color, with just a few ultrabooks AMOLEDs here and there but most didn't have a graphics card. In the store, this screen looked like one of the best among the ones in the same price range, but reviews I've read ever since tell me the screen is actually it's worst point.

I havent yet had the chance to test it myself, but supposedly the color accuracy is way off and the response time is terrible. This is terrible news for me since I intend to use it for digital art more than for gaming.

tl;dr: Is there a laptop in the price range of Asus TUF Gaming A15 with a better display?

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
(CAD) Preferably a max of $1500 give or take
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance trumps all with battery life right behind that followed by build quality, the rest of the bells and whistles don't interest me as much. 4K as well would be nice.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      I'm a big boy, it ain't a problem.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I don't actually, I believe I would rather bigger than smaller though.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I want the flexibility to do what I want, to a degree, some gaming, maybe streaming down the road, modding some things, etc
Good keyboard is a must as well as a good track pad (I think thats what its called? lol the square you control pointer with using finger, wow I sound old)

Looking for a laptop for Post Graduation (college) and daily use (India)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:52 AM PDT

I'm an MBA student looking for a laptop for daily use. Major requirements: 1. Light weight and portable 2. Good battery life 3. Powerful CPU

Major use case: 1. Browsing the web - 20-30 chrome tabs at the same time 2. A hell lot of video calls and classes on Zoom/Teams/Cisco etc (so need it to be able to handle them easily) 3. Microsoft Office (ppt, excel, word mostly) 4. Little bit of Photoshop, Lightroom and Premier pro 5. Reading a lot of PDFs (less glossy/glary screen) 6. Good graphics for light/moderate gaming

I end up having a 14-15 hour screen on day and thus need a good quality display that won't be extremely hurtful to my eyes

I had HP Pavillion x360 or the Asus Zenbook 14/Vivobook 14 in mind.

But if you have better options feel free to suggest them. On another note I was also open to HP Omen 15 and Lenovo Legion 5. But they are heavier and bulkier and I might not get time to game at all to utilise them to their max potential.

If you have any good suggestions please do let me know? I can stretch my budget to max INR 90k but would be happier with something in the 60k-75k range.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US

    • well, I want to buy in Poland, so under 5000 zł, preferably around 4000, but IDK if anyone here's from my country, so I'm looking for something under 1000 euros or 1250 USD. I could also buy in Belgium, but I think there's a different keyboard layout here

      • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really, unless you convince me * How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, performance, battery is not important, don't want ultrabook * How important is weight and thinness to you?

-under 3 kg with battery and charger, under that it's not very important

      15'6 or maybe 17'3

-good quality, but doesn't have to be superb, I know I can't afford some ThinkPad or XPS, I'm going to do internship after graduating studied and I feel my old laptop isn't good enough, and it's old anyways, but IDK what I'm gonna be doing afterwards, so I need to have a decent laptop that will last in a good shape a few years -good color accuracy -not too much overheating of the processor and GPU -keybord lighting is a perk

    • I considered mostly Lenovo Legion Y530, MSI GL65, HP Omen, Asus TUF (but I read that screen isn't that great with this one) Asus ROG Strix, so I would appreciate od someone had experience with those concerning quality and reliability. I was looking at laptops with i5/i7/R 7 4800 H and GTX 1650/1660

What is the Chinese version of Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 ?

    Cheapest computer for 8gb ram?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:58 PM PDT

Hey guys I am wondering how much the cheapest 8gb ram laptop would be. I'm allready buying an expensive laptop for bulky programs, but I need something that can take notes and run programs for college. And the guidelines say 8gb ram is a requirement. If you guys also maybe know of anything that would go on sale on black friday for a cheap computer that would be great.

Thank you so much for all your help

Which of these 5 deals are a steal? For general use/browsing/streaming video.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 12:14 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $832.96

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No prioritization. Mostly stationary use so I don't care for form factor, 2-in-1, battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No. None of the aforementioned are needed/will be used.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Storage space is not a factor, 256GB vs 1TB doesn't matter for the purposes of this laptop. Will be used in the living room for general use (browsing and streaming video).

Looking for third party opinions on which of the 5 I've looked up is the most bang for buck. Which is why I included the Ideapad (openbox for $491) notably with 8GB of RAM but decent/good (?) audio/speaker system.

Android Developer seeking new laptop for software development with easy to upgrade storage and memory and good battery life. Budget $800 USD

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:19 PM PDT

Exactly what the title says. I need a new laptop for software development. My HP Pavilion is too complicated to disassemble and has zero online guides for upgrading ram so I'd have to remove the mobo and flip it over which is too much work. All suggestions are appreciated. To reiterate, here's a list of features:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $800

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No 2-in-1 just want a regular laptop suitable for running virtual devices and building apps.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      I'm open to most anything

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

As close to 13in as possible

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will do some video editing on this laptop

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      Not gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality so I don't have to worry about the case cracking or hinges loosening over time.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The following are must haves for the laptop

Webcam Backlit keys Max 32GB supported RAM Easy to open and upgrade storage/memory GOOD battery life of at least 6 hrs

    Thanks in advance!

LAPTOP SUGGESTIONS (<$2000 CAD, open to refurbs, primarily for writing and research)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:16 PM PDT

Hello Redditors! Thanks in advance for your help. I currently have a 2013 macbook pro, 8gb DDR3 ram 2.6 ghz i5. I tend to have many Chrome windows/PDF/music running at once. It works well but its old and the fan sometimes goes crazy. I think I am due for an upgrade.

I am looking for something under $2000 to replace it. I like macbooks but am not wedded to Mac. Any suggestions? I tried the new Macbook Air for a week and it was awful - crashed with Safari and Zoom open. Need to be able to have multiple PDF/Chrome windows and Zoom running without crashing.

    Thanks everyone!

I need a new thin and light ultrabook, budget <2k usd

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:54 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No more than $2,000 USD, would prefer closer to $1500 but am willing to put in some extra for something that will last me a long time.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes as long as it is a good refurb job ala Apple.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

It being super thin and light is the most important factor, with a good battery life (>9 hours of average use) and bright screen. Decent speakers would be nice but not essential.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Extremely. Most important factor.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14-15 inches, 13 would be fine but a bit small for watching movies and stuff.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, I have a gaming PC for that

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard would be amazing, but as long as it's not terrible i'll be fine. Finger print reader would be great but face unlock would be even better.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current laptop is a nearly maxed out 5th génération lenovo x1 carbon. It's nice, but the somewhat cheap plastic case, dim screen and terrible speakers + battery life (at this point) is really putting a downer on using it. Any recommendations?

Current ideas: LG Gram, XPS 13 (wish it was a bit bigger though, and the 15 might be too thick), and waiting for the ARM MBP. Thanks!!

    Which Laptop is Better?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm currently studying for board exams and my current laptop was on its last leg and gave up. I'm looking for a cheap replacement (Upto $500) - enough to watch lectures and general purpose use. I'm looking at two models:

ASUS VivoBook 15 Laptop, 15.6" Screen, 10th generation Intel Core i3, 8GB Memory, 256GB Solid State Drive, Windows 10, F512JA-OH36

    https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/8487843/ASUS-VivoBook-15-Laptop-156-Screen/

    OR

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15" Laptop, Intel Core i5-1035G1 Quad-Core Processor, 8GB Memory, 256GB Solid State Drive, Windows 10, Almond, 81WE00EPUS

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo-IdeaPad-3-15-Laptop-Intel-Core-i5-1035G1-Quad-Core-Processor-8GB-Memory-256GB-Solid-State-Drive-Windows-10-Almond-81WE00EPUS-Google-Classroom-/177176037

Which is the better/ more reliable option? I just want something sturdy (unlike HP) that doesn't freeze/overheat and can fulfill my school tasks. I don't care for an ultra-thin built, but not too heavy to transport. Battery life preferably at least 3-4 hours. Thanks in advance, guys.
