Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    RAM issue

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:07 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I've recently noticed that my task manager is only using 8gb of my installed 16gbs, the ram is all correctly installed according to my gigabyte motherboard manual and should be working well, however, my task manager shows just 8gb being used.

I have a screenshot but its seemingly not allowed here, so idk. how to share it. Do you guys know what might be the issue?

EDIT: It seems that through vigorous background checking some notable members here have done, it appears that the ram is not fully supported by my Mobo, and I should buy a new one that is.

I can mark this as solved (for now, until I get new ram to test this), thank you everyone for your help!

    Better To Exhaust Or Intake?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 04:15 AM PDT

My motherboard only has one system fan header (LGA 775 board). Would it be better to have that fan as an intake at the front or exhaust out the back? I already have a tower cooler (Hyper 212x) so I'm thinking that would already be enough as an exhaust anyway.

How to tell in what direction a fan has to be installed?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:21 AM PDT

    Heya guys!

So I Recently upgraded my Mainboard & CPU for the first time without any friends help - yay!

Took some pictures of what cable gas to go where, all fine and dandy. However I couldn't remember in what way my fans were pointing. So is there a way to check what way a fan has to face / what direction it has to spin to tell if it's sucking in air or exhausting air?

    Thanks in advance!

    2060 & 3700x - Even worth getting a 3080?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:33 AM PDT

Been hearing that a 3080's vram at 10gb May very well be cutting it a little close, especially as we start going into the next gen games with 4K textures, ray tracing etc.

I basically build a whole new pc, with a 3700x, nvme, new mobo and case, and better ram, but am currently using my 2060.

While I am now playing only at 1080p 60hz I do move to at least 1440p higher refresh rate.

However as someone who doesn't like to upgrade gpu for at least 3 years (especially one that costs 1400 aud), I'm a little worried about the vram.

As such, would you guys suggest I just keep gaming with the 2060 and my new build for the next year until the super versions release with the 20gb Of vram?

10700K combo deal or wait for Zen 3?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 07:03 AM PDT

I'm not a die hard AMD or Intel guy so...

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4094808

This combo saves me $100 and is $18 less than if I went 3800X and comparable AM4 mobo.

Pull the trigger on that deal or do we expect significant enough gains with Zen 3 that I should wait until then?

Edit: PC will be strictly gaming and little to no workstation applications.

Decided to go with a white Corsair theme: ASUS ROG STRIX Z490-A gaming motherboard, I7-10700K, H100i CPU cooler, DDR4 16 GB 3200 memory (will be putting in another 16), 850W Corsair psu, Corsair 465X rgb case. Brought over my MSI GTX970 from my first pc, will be changing this out for a RTX 3000 series or AMD equivalent when revealed.

Few pictures in first link and Video of the RGBs syncing with audio in second link.

    How often is RAM mislabelled?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 07:31 AM PDT

I just put the finishing touches on a CAM Programming workstation for my work. It has 8 x 8GB sticks of Crucial 2666MHz ECC RAM.

When I first turned on the machine, the BIOS registered 2 of the 8 RAM sticks as 16GB each instead of 8GB. So total system memory showed as 80GB instead of the expected 64GB in Windows.

For the sake of consistency and best performance, I wanted all the RAM modules to be the same capacity and speed, so purchased the correct parts from Newegg and they came in a few days later. I got them installed this weekend.

However, upon removing the problem RAM modules and comparing them to the new ones (which did end up showing correctly in BIOS as 8GB), there was next to no differences between the labelling on the sticks themselves, or on the packaging for that matter.

Both have the part number CT8G4RFD8266. Both are labelled as "8GB DDR4-2666 RDIMM 1.2v CL19."

The ONLY difference between the two sticks that I could find is that the correct ones say "made in Taiwan" and the incorrectly labelled parts say "Product of China."

I unfortunately don't have a second system that supports ECC DDR4 memory, so I can't put the seemingly mislabeled sticks into a different rig to see if they still read as 16GB each, but both the BIOS and Windows in the original workstation showed that 2 of my 8 sticks were reading as 16GB, so I'm fairly confident that's what they are.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about being sent 32 gigs of memory when I only paid for 16, but this whole thing just had me curious: how often does RAM get mislabeled like this? I've built over 50 computers over the course of the last few years, and I've never seen this happen before. I was curious if anybody else has ever experienced something similar.

TL;DR: RAM is labelled as 8GB, but shows up in BIOS and Windows as 16GB. Does this happen often?

Making a new computer, don't know if the parts I picked are good.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:38 AM PDT

Hello, I was looking into building a new computer and I was wondering if any changes can be made to this build. The operating system will be a Windows 10 and my budget is around $1200-$1300 including the monitor, and I don't need any other peripherals.

I was specifically looking for help with a gpu, since I don't think the one I chose is the greatest bang for my buck.

What to do with fan hub?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:27 AM PDT

I'm currently building a new PC having not done so for 8 years. My case (fractal define 7) has a fan hub but I haven't used one before.

Do I plug all fans, including the cpu fan, into it, or just the case fans? Then where do I plug the fan hub into?

    Ryzen 3700x + RTX 2080ti, will a 650w psu be enough?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:40 AM PDT

I'm building a pc for a friend, my first plan was to go with a 3070 but I've never been closely involved in a new release of gpu's and all the hype that goes with it. Based on the overal discussions going on about it it will probably be impossible to get your hands on one so we're looking at a used 2080ti instead. I ordered all the other parts already and bought a 650w 80+ gold psu that was actually meant for the 3070. Will this psu also do for a 2080ti or should I get a 750w?

Temp issues on an quiet airflow build with RTX 3080

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 11:11 AM PDT

    hello :)

first off, my very first full own build. I was looking for something nice & quiet, but also handle all those temperatures a little better. However in reality, its mostly the opposite for me on GPU and MB chipset...

    quick parts list:

Case: be quiet! PURE BASE 500DX
Case Fans: 5x be quiet! Silent Wings 3 140mm PWM (2 front intake, 2 top intake, 1 rear exhaust)
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
Cooler: be quiet! DARK ROCK PRO 4
MB: MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI
    RAM: Crucial Ballistix RGB 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 (running at 3600 @ 16-19-19-38)
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio 10G
PSU: be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 11 Platinum 750W

    Picture of my build

now as I said I'm doing this the first time, and as I was looking for something cool&quiet I went with the x5 fan configuration.
Now as I understand the common configuration is to have top exhaust, but I came across this video, where they tested airflow & temps in this exact case, and at the 8:14 mark you can see that the config I went with actually came out the best of all the variants tested.

Some HWINFO64 numbers after a few runs of AC:Odyssey Benchmark

Now I do not think CPU temp is that high, right now under full load it maxes out at 72° with the CPU fans at 1200rpm. What worries me is chipset and GPU though. I might add that in idle, everything is fine, even when trying MSI's "ZERO FROZR" configuration (yes I tested out dragon center) where it stops all chassis fans under light load.

What I can see that the case fans do not adjust to the higher load=>temps (should they?). I did not fiddle with BIOS yet (and right now can't, since I am away from my pc for a few days), just tested with and w/o MSI dragon center.
Also, how hot is the X570 chipset supposed to get at max? I feel >2000rpm spinning is a little crazy, and both temperature & speed would have increased further if I kept testing.
Finally, I do not like where the GPU core temp is going. Various tests suggest that the 3080 Gaming X Trio reached 76° under full load at most, whereas I am currently at 81° and counting (was still increasing over time).

So as mentioned, I currently cannot test a few things off the bat myself since I am away (like switching top fans to exhaust). So my question would be what to improve? Is there a way that the bottom front fan is not positioned ideally? like it is mostly blowing against the RTX 3080 heatsink? I feel like based on the X570 chipset & GPU temperatures that there is a lot of heat accumulating above and below the 3080. Or maybe case fans are spinning too low after all? (you can see all the maximum rpm on the hwinfo screen - all fans adjust with increasing temps, except the case fans).

anyway, hints & suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    How toxic is thermal paste?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:43 AM PDT

Hi all! So my pc broke so I decided to tear my pc apart since i am about to get a whole new build soon. I placed the components on my desk. After I made a sandwhich and totally forgot to wash my hands before that. I was struggling with my cpu cooler and now Im worried I may had some thermal paste on my hands. If i did would it be dangerous?

Note: the paste was almost like all dried up since it was 6 years old.
