Learning Linux OS for Embedded Programmer Posted: 28 Sep 2020 08:08 AM PDT Hey guys, I am working on embedded systems projects and I feel like I need a better understanding of Linux OS and device drivers. The project is going to be built with the Nvidia Jetson Nano and I am trying to program the GPIO with the Tegra X1 on the module. But, as I was going through the reference manual I relieved I needed to know more about programming computers. I have a couple of books/resources to learn from and I'd like your opinions on which to use depending on my situation: - Linux Device Drivers, 3rd Edition by Jonathan Corbet, Alessandro Rubini, Greg Kroah-Hartman - How Linux Works, 2nd Edition: What Every Superuser Should Know - Linux system programming: talking directly to the kernel and C library [link] [comments] |
everything needs a password, the password is long and complex, it's very inconvenient Posted: 28 Sep 2020 01:31 PM PDT I am a noob of coursethe password has to be 8 characters and has entropy requirements, it's uncomfortable to type it in every time I need to download an app or modifie a setting, or when the screen is off. I am not sure if making it shorter is a good solution, because I saw many knowledgeable linux youtubers have a 4 characters password, but when I looked up password length manipulation, some articles and answers pointed that it might be dangerous, so I am looking for the best combination of settings in terms of convenience and also security, and how to execute them. or am I just a bad at typing I am using linux mint 20 [link] [comments] |

Is it alright to replace default .config to my own? Posted: 28 Sep 2020 07:05 AM PDT I want to reinstall my distro, but don't want to loose my config files. Is it alright to copy it somwhere and then replace the default one with my own? It will not mess up my system, right? [link] [comments] |

Is Unix still around and updated? Posted: 27 Sep 2020 11:54 PM PDT I think this might be a stupid question, but it's one I've been curious about I know Linux and BSD are derived from UNIX, at least in a sense, but is Unix still out there and used for anything? If it's still available, how do you get it? Is it something like RHEL that's meant for enterprise? [link] [comments] |
Question related to bleachbit software. Posted: 28 Sep 2020 12:38 PM PDT I want to wipe (overwrite) the free space in my home partition (i have different partitions for home and root file system), what are the correct steps to do so? I tried wiping the free space in my home partition but the software got stuck right at the end and i had to force quit. Here are the steps that i followed: 1) run the bleachbit command using sudo 2) select the "wipe free space" option from the menu and then select home partition and press ok button Then it started wiping the free space but got stuck right at the end. Also i found a temporary file with a really large name and size in my /home folder. As it turns out, bleachbit created that file but since i had to force quit it, it didn't delete that file so i had to manually delete it as well. [link] [comments] |
What is IOMMU and does the error I'm getting about it matter? Posted: 28 Sep 2020 12:35 PM PDT I recently installed Mint 20 Cinnamon on my PC. After GRUB, this message flashes briefly on my screen:
Other than that, it seems to boot fine and I can log in. I tried looking up what it means, but I found a bunch of complicated solutions that I didn't really understand and I couldn't find anything about what it actually means. If it matters, I have an AMD RX 470 GPU. I'm not sure if this is related, but I'm also having audio issues. When I'm listening to music, every few seconds, the audio skips and I hear a crackle. If I click on the audio icon on the panel, the volume slider jumps up and down in conjunction with the skips. Could this be related to the aforementioned issue? I'm not sure what role GPUs do/don't play in audio. Thanks in advance. Edit: I plugged my headphones into the front I/O panel and the stuttering went away... Odd. [link] [comments] |
Raspberry Pi Questions (Hope this is the right place) Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:43 AM PDT Hey guys i was wondering if someone could lend me a hand regarding some code on my RPi 3. In a nutshell im setting up a torrent box. These are the steps i have completed so far 1.Enabled SSH 2. Enabled VNC 3. Enabled SMB Shares 4. Mount USB HDD --Problem 1 - I can mount my USBHDD to a folder fine. However when it comes to mounting a network share to a folder, nothing i try seems to work. If i go to File Manager>Go>Network, i can see all my NAS files and access them but can not mount them. 5.Installed and configured OpenVPN 6.Installed - Deluge, Jackett,Sonarr,Radarr,Lidarrand NZBGet using this link: http://greenfrog.eu5.net/rpildsv3.php -Problem no2 - Everything Auto starts on boot, except Sonarr and i can not figure out why? Problem no3 - when Sonarr was running, i could not see my mounted drives. I know the info is rather vauge in this post, forgive me, the first time i started using anything linux based was about 4 days ago. If i can get these 3 problems sorted, i feel my setup will be working how i want it too. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help [link] [comments] |
Debian problems with mouse and display on new install. Posted: 28 Sep 2020 11:46 AM PDT I have Ubuntu 1804 and 2004 running on this same hardware with no issues, but for some reason, the mouse makes you click slightly below where you would normally click. For instance, I had to kill power to shut it down because it won't let me click on the power off icon because it wants you to click below the physical screen. Other issue is it doesn't support the screen resolutions i need to get a full screen. Debian is running gnome just like my 2 Ubuntu machines so not sure why it won't offer me the same screen res I need. Any ideas? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Shout out for help - ELAN touchscreen stops operating after short time of usage in tablet mode Posted: 28 Sep 2020 10:58 AM PDT Hello there, I'm using this beautiful shared script from github: https://gist.github.com/rubo77/daa262e0229f6e398766 what is extremely handy when I decide to use my 2 in 1 convertible laptop as a tablet. Script rotates my screen by 90 degree and disables touchpad each time it is activated and I call this "Tablet Mode". When I do use this script after few minutes my touchscreen stops reacting on any press - when I connect usb mouse, input works. I am a noob, and I am a beginner at troubleshooting such things. What log file should I start to read in order to try to understand the problem? I run Debian stable with XFCE. Many thanks for any help [link] [comments] |

Unable to launch certain apps? (Software Center and BitWarden specifically) Posted: 28 Sep 2020 10:11 AM PDT Hey guys, probably a noob issue here, but this morning I turned on my laptop and tried to go on my BitWarden app - but it did not load. So I tried to go on the Software Center to see if I could find some more info - the loading icon appears but no GUI appears (the app doesn't launch). Upon googling a bit, I tried running update/upgrade, uninstalling/reinstalling the apps via the terminal - same problem. I understand that there's a distinction between snaps and other apps, so I tried other apps and all those I tried seemed to work (solitaire game, libreoffice apps, system monitor, for example). Now, I had a backup built with Timeshift a couple days earlier, and I ran the "restore" option - but same problem, the Software Center and Bitwarden don't "turn on". As anyone else ran into this problem and if so, what did you do to resolve it? I have a second laptop where those apps work correctly, so I'm trying to figure out what I did different (the only notable thing I can think of is Timeshift). Thanks a lot in advance! Edit: On Ubuntu 20.04 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2020 09:59 AM PDT If I'm on my VPN, I can connect to the server via SSH or FTP. If I'm not on the VPN, I can connect via SSH but not FTP. So I assume that I set something up on the FTP server that's limiting access, but I don't know what it could be. If I connect on the VPN, I get the following output in the FileZilla UI: Without the VPN, I get: Any idea what I did here and how to fix it? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Sep 2020 09:33 AM PDT Hey there, i've been installing steam.exe on Linux with wine, which worked fine except for the blackscrees in the steam App. The SteamSetup.exe gave me the errors that it could not create firewall exceptions for steam.exe and steamwebhelper.exe which i guess is the reason for these blackscreens. Now to the question: does anyone know how i could add these exceptions manually? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2020 09:32 AM PDT have installed Mint on my SSD and set the Background to be an image from my HDD. However, whenever I start Mint it shows the default background. I also noticed that some folders from the HDD that I dragged to the desktop only show up after round about 15 sec. So my assumption is that the HDD isn't recognized as a drive in my PC, but as an external devices. Does anyone know what's wrong? May be important: When I installed Mint, the HDD wasn't plugged in.
