Dell g5 SE or Asus tuf A15? Posted: 30 Sep 2020 01:33 AM PDT I'm a 1st year college student and I'm into gaming. Me and my friends play call of duty warzone and valorant. I also need it for a few presentations and projects. which would be the better choice? OBS performance on ryzen 4500u laptop Posted: 30 Sep 2020 05:07 AM PDT I am looking for a laptop without discrete GPU because I already have a PC for heavy lifting. I have zeroed in on hp x360 ryzen 4500u + 8gb ram because it also has a pen/touch input. Primary use: Record video presentations using OBS. OBS will record the screen + dslr camera feed via capture card. Adobe audition for capturing audio. Apart from these two, I might be running a small PowerPoint presentation simultaneously. Will the 4500u be able to handle it or should I look for something more powerful. I want to avoid discrete GPU because that would mean more fans and more fan noise in my recordings. PS. OBS will save to disk, not stream online. submitted by /u/gosatyaaa [link] [comments] |

Refurbish my acer aspire v5 573g or buy the new uni discounted hp zbook studio g5 Posted: 30 Sep 2020 04:35 AM PDT Hello all, I don't know if this is the right sub for this question. I've got 2.5 years of uni left and my laptop is starting to show it's age. I have got the option to buy a hp at a discounted rate, but it is still more than €1200. I'm a tech savvy guy and have added a ssd to this laptop already so I thought I might be able to refurbish my current laptop. It needs a new battery ( short live span), Fan replacement (one of them is making a noise that resembles that it is hitting the plastic air spiral thingy), 1tb ssd instead of the current 500gb HDD (slow write/read), Optional screen replacement (got some small yellow heat induced clouding at the bottom of the screen) ──────── This all could be done for €230-280 (without the screen, or 290-340 with) My question is, what would your suggestion be, as the specs of the hp are not that extremely much better than the Acer. submitted by /u/MountainOfTwigs [link] [comments] |
Suggestions? (Obviously) Posted: 30 Sep 2020 04:24 AM PDT I am looking for a half decent laptop at around 700-800 AUD, I know, I know, I'm being cheap about it but I am a Child and I can't work. All I really need it for is very light "gaming" ( which is really just playing Minecraft, not even competitively) and school stuff, sick of playing on a school issued chromebook at 0.5 fps so any suggestions are welcome submitted by /u/realitytrain [link] [comments] |
How to prepare for prime day Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:45 AM PDT How to prepare for prime day: Hi guys, so Amazon finally confirmed that prime day is going to be on 13-14 Oct. and usually there is some great laptop deals on prime day, which usually doesn't last long, so here is how to increase your chances of landing a good laptop for a great price or a great laptop for a good price. Follow me, this is not self promotion (well yes but not a big one), but I will post list of the best deals and update it regularly throughout the two days, I will post it on my profile so you will need to be following me to see it, or at least remember to go to my profile. (here is my profile Find few laptops that you want to get now, that are suitable for you and set up deal alerts either through Amazon or 3rd party apps. Know the prices of the laptops you want to buy either now or what they used to be before corona, because as you know some sellers increased their prices with the increased demands (here are some of them). Plan ahead regarding the rest of the deals, don't buy something you don't need or won't need in a while just because it is on sale. This is new for Amazon Prime, but you can now support your local business more info here and they will give you 10$ in exchange for your support. Join Amazon Prime here free trial if you didn't get one before which you will need to take advantage of the prime day deals. Please, please, don't overspend on your credit card and get in debit just because there is a good price on something (unless owning it will make you more money, or that you can pay off in full before interest are charged) . Good luck and may the odds be forever in your favor. Also stay safe, stay inside if you can. by /u/IronAvocado I suggest using an Amazon price tracker for this such as https://camelcamelcamel.com/ Any more tips for prime day deals are welcomed and will be edited into the post with credits of course, so if you have them, say them. submitted by /u/LonerIM2 [link] [comments] |
New laptop computer engineering Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:07 AM PDT Hello everyone, i am looking to purchase a new laptop and I need it to run smooth when it comes to using heavy programs such as solidworks or any cad software. Along with cad I'll be running a Linux virtual machine most of the time as well as any hardware coding software. Anyone have any suggestions of a laptop that maybe has no less than 16gb ram as well as processor that runs faster than 2.3ghz? And maybe what brands to steer away from? Laptop for college. Posted: 30 Sep 2020 03:32 AM PDT Hi, I've started my degree and I need to buy a laptop so I can do my course work. My course is 3 years so it needs to last that long. The whole use of the laptop is just for work and nothing else, and all my work is done on Microsoft word so it needs to be able to use Microsoft word. Battery life is not important as I'd use it at home or when I'm in college I sit right next to an outlet so I can charge it no problem. Memory does not need to be large like I said it's just for college work. Lastly I don't really want to spend over £400 or maybe up to £500. Thank you to anyone that replies I just don't want to go into a store and them be like "Oh you should get this! And this is great too!" And try to upsell me lol If you need to ask me anymore questions I will try my best to be helpful. :) submitted by /u/Im-From-England [link] [comments] |
High spec laptop with a large screen and battery, but not necessarily for gaming? Posted: 30 Sep 2020 03:16 AM PDT - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
R10,000-R25,000 in South African rand (About $800-1500) - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Large screen size > battery life > performance > > > gaming - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Doesn't matter as long as it's portable - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17+ inches - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I do a lot of browser-intensive stuff. I need to have as many browser tabs open running as smoothly as possible. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not a triple-Ayyyy gamer but I'd like to be able to run some indie games and PS4-era console ports if I can. I'm willing to sacrifice GPU/gaming for other specs, though. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Minimum i5 chip or equivalent, i7 or equivalent if you think I need it At least 1x HDMI slot Preferably no pre-installed OS so I can do it myself and save money or put the saved money toward better specs Definitely want some kind of newer GPU in the laptop but don't need much - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I spotted this laptop (at the absolute top of my price range) and would be willing to shell out for it if I have no other option ... but I don't really need a gaming laptop. I need a high-spec not-gaming laptop that I won't have to abandon for many many years, that also has a big screen / battery. submitted by /u/makemestraight [link] [comments] |
2 in 1 with US ANSI keyboard that can be bought from Europe Posted: 30 Sep 2020 03:02 AM PDT This might be a bit of a long shot but I am looking to buy a 2 in 1 laptop that has US ANSI layout. I am specifically looking for a 13 inch HP Envy X360 but I am also interested in the just announced Dell XPS 2 in 1. However, I live in Finland and laptops here are sold with nordic layout and the only store that actually carries that HP model cannot order it with a different layout (additionally, they're out of stock and new ones are coming in November). Are there any stores either worldwide or in the US that would ship to Europe? It seems that Amazon only has the 15 inch model (and I believe it's the one with only 250 nits, too?) but without local knowledge I couldn't find any other stores that offer international shipping. I am also open to refurbs. submitted by /u/OneMillionKnives [link] [comments] |

Laptop For College ($500 - 700) (US) Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:56 PM PDT Looking for a laptop for my senior year of college since my current one is having some issues. Haven't bought a laptop since I got my current macbook 6 years ago, but through a tiny bit of research I have heard good things about the Lenovo Thinkpad and Dell Latitude, so I've been looking into those but I'm curious as to what people here would suggest. - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
- $500 - 700 US (I could do over $700 if need be but I'd rather not, I'm hoping to stick closer to the $500 range if possible)
- Are you open to refurbs/used?
- No
- How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
- Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor
- How important is weight and thinness to you?
- Not super important, would prefer to not have a behemoth of a laptop, but I'm not against something on the heavier side
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
- Around 15.4 - 15.6 inches
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
- I need to do some 3d graphics processing for a class, but it is fairly low performance stuff. I'd like something that can run stuff like Altium, Matlab, etc, but doesn't need to run it super well or anything. I'd like to be able to do some gaming on it, but I don't need something for running the latest and greatest games. If it could run games like Overwatch, Rocket League, stuff around that range that would be good.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
- Games like Overwatch, Rocket League, Minecraft, hopefully be able to run at 60fps.
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
- No
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
- My current laptop is a Macbook Pro 2014 with 2.5GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 16GB RAM, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB Graphics Card, 250ish GB storage. I have storage issues cause of my Windows partition, but I have a spare 2T external hard drive. I'm able to run the games I listed on this laptop at close to 60fps with some drops every now and then, but I'm not able to run any recent somewhat intensive games (Can't run Witcher 3 for instance).

help me select a laptop from these choices Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:38 AM PDT Hello, I am quite unfamiliar with the laptop specifications so I would like to ask for your opinion. Listed below are my own situation/conditions: I will mainly use this for schoolwork, streaming, and browsing; I doubt I'll be playing multiplayer games e.g. Valorant/CSGO (might play fall guys), but I might try some single player RPG games (e.g. Genshin Impact, Skyrim, etc.) I am expecting to run some programs (Matlab, engineering programs); nothing about model rendering or game development as far as I know I am expecting to travel in the near future; hopefully nothing too heavy I would like to avoid colorful keyboards/chroma/design; hopefully something that looks more professional The store mainly sells gaming laptops like Helios 300 but they also have Acer Aspire, Lenovo Thinkpad, etc. But I have made a short list of choices based from my friends' recommendations: Acer Nitro 5 Intel Core i7 10750H; 2.60GHz to 5.0GHz 8GB DDR4 RAM 2933MHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD Storage (there's also a 256GB version) 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz Display 4-Zone RGB Keyboard Lenovo Legion 5 Intel Core i5 10300H; 2.50GHz to 4.50GHz 8GB DDR4 RAM 2933MHz NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 512GB SSD Storage 15.6" FHD IPS 120Hz Display 4-Zone RGB Keyboard Acer Predator Triton 300 Intel Core i5-9300H; 2.40GHz to 4.10GHz 16GB DDR4 RAM 2666MHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD Storage 15.6" FHD IPS Display RGB Keyboard Lenovo Legion Y540 Intel Core i7-9750H; 2.60GHz to 4.50GHz 8GB DDR4 RAM 2666MHz NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 512GB SSD Storage 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz Display White Backlit Keyboard Lenovo Thinkbook 15 Please assume that I can pay for all those listed above. Laptop with possible upgrades to make it more future proof Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:36 AM PDT I have a laptop now, which has everything soldered to the motherboard with only 2 USB-C ports. I'm noticing it becoming slow and I want to upgrade. I prefer a laptop that has options to upgrade the RAM and SSD. I prefer a Windows laptop, if possible a large SSD capacity and 16GB Ram or more. Less is okay, only if it's possible to upgrade it. Size should be 14inch. I don't really care about the price. submitted by /u/throwaway_selfcare [link] [comments] |
Great performing gaming laptop. ($1,200 – 2,600 USD) (VN) Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:29 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2,600 á´œsá´… or 60,270,600 á´ É´á´… (Vietnam Dong) Are you open to refurbs/used? No. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, build quality, battery, noise, heat How important is weight and thinness to you? My current laptop is 5.6 lb. I prefer my next laptop to be around the same weight as I don't like thin laptops that are too light. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I intend to use this computer for gaming, coding, video, audio, photo editing. (WSL, Sublime Text, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/Lightroom/Premiere/Audition. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Relatively new to PC gaming, but just to mention a few: Death Stranding, Yakuza Kiwami; emulators like PCSX2, RPCS3, Citra, Dolphin . . . Not sure about the FPS, but I would like something that runs smoothly without any buffering or graphical issues. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? This will be the successor to my previous laptop that I've owned for 7 years, so reliable build quality is important to me. I also need a good quality keyboard, since I will be using this laptop for both persona/work usage. Touch pad isn't so important as I usually use an external Logitech mouse. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was so close to buying the Lenovo Legion 7i, but after YouTuber Dave Lee condemned it for its poor thermal support and throttling, I am seeking alternative recommendations. I really need an HDMI, USB 3.0 ports. I also would prefer an Ethernet port and a numpad, if feasible. Lastly, most of the gaming laptops I have been seeing have (what I consider) low hard drive space. I need bare minimum 1TB, but I would love to be able to upgrade to 2TB. The laptop I currently have my eye on is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 GA502IV-AZ033T. Unfortunately, it only has a 512GB hard drive, but I'm not sure if this is upgradable or how the system performance with heat/noise. submitted by /u/MuyGalan [link] [comments] |
