Need a laptop for university and work

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 02:57 AM PDT

Hey guys, so I want a laptop for university and also I want to be doing some programming to finance my tuition fees. I will be studying physics if that's of any importance. I know a bit about laptops and I was thinking of the new dell xps 15 2020. My budget is around 2100$ but if I can buy a cheaper one that will do the job, I will be extremely happy. I want the laptop to have a nice screen, nice keyboard build quality to be good and not run hot, also i prefer 15inch laptops. I won't be gaming on it. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Gaming laptop for my brother. Price range: €600

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:16 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

€600, country is Netherlands but we can buy on sites like amazon as well.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? He doesn't prioritize any form factor

1st. Performance 2nd. Build quality 3rd. Battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    No

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, he plays games like Roblox and small games on steam but want to try bigger games too like borderlands 3 and gta 5

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Check up👆👆, no particular setting and no particular FPS as long as it runs good and smooth

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I think a good keyboard and reliable build quality are a must. The rest doesn't care a lot

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would be nice if it has a Ethernet port

What’s the best laptop to edit YouTube videos on?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:03 PM PDT

I'm interested in starting my own YouTube channel and I've been really passionate about the idea overall, I want to buy a nice camera set to vlog everyday life and shoot good quality videos(I'm still debating on which camera is perfect and Budgetable) I been looking into buying a Mac book and the 2020 models are a bit expensive especially the 16" and I'm very new to the specs and don't really know what I'll need but I want whatever is best so I can grow my channel and try to make something out of it, (also without breaking the bank.)

Laptop with pen for Mathematics student-teacher 400-700$ Canada

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:32 PM PDT

So, I am about to start my PhD in pure mathematics, and I am shopping for a 2-in-1 laptop to aid me in my quest. I also tend to teach and give conferences, so I will use it for that purpose also.My current laptop for that purpose is a lenovo thinkpad x201 tablet, which has been my trusted companion for the past 5 years (I had a thinkpad x61t before that). The battery is almost dead and it is quite heavy for my shoulders, plus the cpu shows its age and the speakers are acting out.

For the OS, if the preinstalled is Windows, I will be drawn to install Linux as I am more confortable there with software I already know (and I don't really need Microsoft Office). I am definitely open about Chrome OS, as its better linux compatibility than Windows allows me to use what I need seamlessly, the battery life is great, and from what I hear they are less expansive (?).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Between 400$ and 700$ Canada
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, as long as the deal is good and below ~500$ (and let's not forget battery life)
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 with pen support is a necessity, for handwritten homework and PDF annotation during class.
Then in order battery life, ruggedness (I don't care at all about fancy looks/feels), performance, form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I need to carry it in my backpack and maybe use it standing, so better if light, but it won't be a deal breaker as long as it is reasonable (as in much lighter than the thinkpad lol).
Thinness might actually be a minus if it stands in the way of good port selection, but it is not that important of a factor (though it better be the best deal ever if it does not have have a headphone jack).
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Screen size no, but I would much rather have a 1080p screen (though if impossible, I can live without)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nothing really demanding spec-wise, as I can offload it remotely on my rig at home or my university's servers. I want to run handwriting software for homework, and I need to write my thesis in latex, so a good latex editor (probably texstudio).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Nothing that can't be played with moonlight (so I guess about nothing).
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Again, 2-in-1 with stylus, ideally emr technology as I have plenty of wacom pens lying around.
If it is a Windows laptop, I need good Linux compatibility. Chromebooks are welcome too.
As I am gonna type a lot of documents, better if the keyboard is good but I am not that demanding.Preferable if it has hdmi-out, but I don't mind using usb-C to hdmi/VGA dongles as long as it can work with a projector for presentations/classes.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've seen the lenovo chromebook 500e 2nd gen, which seems to fit all my criterions (except for the fhd screen), but it is never in stock apparently. I wonder what else is there/will there be stock in the foreseable future.

Last, I am not particularly in a rush. As the pandemic rages, next fall semester will be online classes only at my university, so I can manage for now with my old thinkpad convertible. But I'd rather be ready by Winter 2021.

I'm looking for a laptop that can handle uni work and light gaming, budget 400-500€ :)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 03:37 AM PDT

Uni work would be some simple MS Office work and chrome browsing, the light gaming part is just playing a rather undemanding game, World Of Tanks, on the offtime. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

Country: Slovenia. Preferences: At least some SSD, 8gb ram, perhaps something else rather than integrated intel graphics. Otherwise, anything goes :)

I have one final dilemma before buying my new budget laptop. Please help.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:50 PM PDT

I do not have much of a budget but my laptop broke and now I have to replace it. After looking around for a while, these are the last two options. I only mention CPU and GPU as they both are HP Pavilion 15 hence all the rest is the same.

    1) Ryzen 7 - 3750H with Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 (4GB)

    Or

    2) Intel i7 - 9750H with Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 (4GB)

Which one should I buy? Should I go for the better CPU (i7) or the better GPU (GTX 1650)? I am definitely not a hardcore PC gamer, neverthess I would gladly exploit the opportunity to run some games on the machine. Nothing too recent, don't really care for ultra settings, just for some good single-player games to run smoothly. The primary use of the laptop will be some standard Web browsing, films and TV, literature research and writing.

Thanks for reading this, hope you have a nice day, wherever you are!

Laptop for Photo Editing to replace 2012 Macbook Pro

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $1000AUD at a push - Australia

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Durable enough to be shoved in bags every now and then

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 13-15inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Photo-editing - Lightroom CC & Photoshop CC
    • Sims 4

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

2-in-1 with a garaged stylus. At most 14". Screen at least 400 nits and 72% NTSC. Processor at least 4700u (no Intel please). At least 16GB ram. Standard laptop keyboard layout. USA, no budget limit. Willing to import.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 03:22 AM PDT

Pretty much said it all in the title. Previously I had the new HP Envy x360. It was great except the keyboard layout was stupid and no garaged pen and screen was too dim. The Yoga C940 would be PERFECT, but it's running a shitty Intel chip. Is there a laptop like it with Ryzen 4700u or better? Build quality doesn't have to be premium, but I kind of assume it would be with a laptop like I just described.

    Just Curious

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 02:48 AM PDT

If I'm buying a new gaming laptop, does it matter which GPU should I choose considering that the games I wanna play can be run at 60fps on any budget GPU while the screen has 60hz refresh rate?

To phrase it better: why should I care about gaming laptops that boast about their ability to run games at 60+fps while only having 60hz refresh rate screens??

    Is there something I'm missing?

[USA-UT, $650-750] Laptop for college, battery life primary concern

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:52 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Ideally around $650, maximum cap of $750

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm open to refurbished units but I'd like to avoid used products if at all possible.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life comes first, followed by performance, form factor (2-in-1), and build quality, respectively.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's a nice-to-have. If there are 2 otherwise-identical laptops, pick the lighter one.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll want to be able to run Visual Studio Community Edition.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Gaming won't be much of a concern as I have a decent gaming desktop. However, I'd prefer a Ryzen processor for its integrated vega graphics, just in case.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    4 cores required

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I prefer Ryzen processors if possible.

Best laptop under $1000? Standard Work Use

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:39 PM PDT

My current Dell 7373? has been acting pretty funky lately. Battery is weak, keyboard and battery gets incredibly hot, fan? is extremely loud. Just some stuff I didn't expect to deal with from a 3 year old laptop.

Regardless, I need a new laptop for standard work/web browsing. I read a lot of article, youtube, and real estate a lot. Basic MS office is required, but I do not game or use photoshop or anything like that.

Prefer on the cheaper side as I feel like I do not need an expensive laptop for what I do, but I prefer quality at the end of the day so I'm all ears.

    Thoughts? Thanks!

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Just to summarize, I am a college student looking for a laptop with more performance than your typical ultrabook. Doesn't need to be an 8 core Ryzen with an RTX gpu, but it does need to be able to handle intensive CADing (most laptops w/ iGPUs are very laggy for me).

However, I would like the laptop to be relatively thin w/ good build quality and battery life. Ideally able to last 6+ hours on casual web surfing.

I am willing to pay a premium for a nicer form factor, such as a Razor Blade or an XPS, but I can't find any that are currently in my price range. I am hoping others would be able to provide suggestions.

Edit: I also need the laptop to have a webcam, ideally one at the top of the screen, since I have a lot of online classes for school.
