Cooling and fan noise comparison between Razer Blade 15 Advanced (2020) and Dell XPS 15 9500 (2020)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:52 PM PDT

I'm talking about highest spec CPU in both laptops (i7-10875H -> Razer and i9-10885H -> Dell).

    Which one will you recommend?

I want laptop which will not burn my legs under load when sitting in my lap and which is quiet if possible.

Which one has lower temps in general?

Let's say that use case is doing CPU intensive work, not gaming.

    ** Extra question:

Is it possible to undervolt those two and if yes please give values after undervolting (temps, etc.).

    300 nit IPS displays

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:12 PM PDT

Question regarding Lenovo T14/14s or x13. How bad are the displays? Or rather, are the 300 nit displays acceptable? I'm not massively fussed about colour accuracy etc but it has to be bright enough.

Has anyone got a Thinkpad with a 300 nit display or anything similar. Any insight would be awesome

HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - ridiculous fan noise

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:58 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have a HP Pavilion Gaming laptop (https://www8.hp.com/us/en/laptops/product-details/34748826) and the fan noise is straight up ridiculous under LIGHT gaming load or installing applications. It sounds like I'm cracking the genome sequence for the cure for COVID-19. I tried turning on WhisperMode from the NVIDIA settings and it did nothing.

What can I do to quiet this thing to a reasonable level?

    Thanks!

Slight buzzing noise coming from laptop when plugged in?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:41 PM PDT

I just bought a new laptop last week and I've noticed a very slight buzzing noise that can almost be described as a high-pitched static sound when plugged into the power adapter. It fluctuates up and down slightly, so it's not constant in frequency. But it also doesn't seem to change with what I'm doing on the laptop. It could almost be described as sounding like an electric mosquito, but not so intense. It's only there when plugged into the power adapter, so I'm assuming it's related to that.

It's not very loud, and I can only hear it when putting my ear real close to the keyboard or when the room is completely silent. It is noticeable, though, and I just want to make sure this isn't something to be concerned about while I'm still in the return window for the laptop. It seems to originate on the opposite side of the laptop from the battery connector port. My laptop is an HP Envy 15 (2020 model) with a 200W power adapter.

I tried to take a video of the sound, but like I said, it's not very loud so I had to lay my phone directly on the keyboard when recording just to pick up the sound: https://youtu.be/5BtJAp5CTCs

    Any help is greatly appreciated

HP Pavilion Laptop Plugged in but not charging.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:37 AM PDT

Hey all. So my Pavilion Laptop for some reason is acting up. I'm not sure yet if its the charging cable or not, but let me explain whats going on.

For some reason, when its plugged in, the battery life stays at 92% and doesnt increase or decrease. However, unlike most other people with this issue, it doesnt say "Plugged in, not charging". It just says "Plugged in". But I know its not charging since it has been plugged in for over an hour and continues to stay on 94%, even when my laptop is off.

It almost seems like the cable is just stabilizing it instead of actually charging it. Does anyone know what exactly I should do in this situation? Should I take out the battery? Any help would be appreciated.

The asus zenbook 13/14/15? Need help

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Hello! Im about to go to college and i needed a good laptop. Now,i've come to the conclusion that the Asus zenbook is my best option. First of all, what do you say about my pick? Is it as good and as compact as they say it is? Second of all, whats the optimal size for it? 13"/14"/15"? I want it to be small and compact but i don't want it to look quite like an iPad with some random keyboard strapped to it. Already looking forward to seeing your answers!

Have an old laptop? Install chromeOS!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:13 PM PDT

In an era where people need fast, reliable and secure computers for work and education, many people want to achieve that for cheap.

A lot of people have older laptops that can't run the latest version of Windows 10. To reuse these laptops, I suggest installing Cloudready, or chromeOS. chromeOS speeds up older laptops and makes them reliable for use in 2020.

What do you think about cloudready?

How to install cloudready (and benchmarks) here

    Looking for 17' laptop

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:32 PM PDT

So my mother's laptop is dying and it is a Lenovo Flex 2 17' and now she wants another 17' but I have looked everywhere and there are no 17' anywhere except limited runs on QVC. We have narrowed the laptop down to an HP Envy x360 15z with a 512 NVME SSD, 16gb of RAM, and a Ryzen 5 4600U and is as I know reliable. The last AMD laptop I had lasted no problem for 10 years, and it continued working for 12 with my friends using it. It was also HP and they have really good warranties, take it from me after my HP Pavilion Power fried itself. We really are trying to stay around 800-900.

My 2019 dell inspiron 13 5391 dims brightness on darker screens and brightens on lighter screens. I went to the settings to turn off adaptive brightness, but as you can see from the photo, there’s no option. Does anyone know what I need to do?

Is a Macbook Air a good overall laptop for college?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:10 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop for school. My budget is roughly $1k. I've always had Apple products so I kind of assumed that this would be the right move but wanted some feedback just in case. For $974 I can get the most basic Macbook Air and it also comes with a set of free Airpods. I thought this was a pretty good deal. Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

What Can I Use To Prop Up My Laptop Screen In Place Of A Broken Hinge While Saving Up Money For Repairs?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:43 PM PDT

I am in college and my laptop hinge snapped off of the top cover while opening it in class today. My laptop still functions after removing the hinge, but HP doesn't have the parts nor compatible parts in stock at their parts store. I have contacted some pc repair shops nearby and they will charge around 300 dollars is there wasn't any more damage. Currently, I don't have the money for that and I have to use this laptop for college (programming, graphic design, etc).

If both the hinge and the laptop top cover were available, I would have just repaired the laptop myself, but seeing as that is not the case, what do you think I should use to prop my laptop up while it is on one hinge? Do you have any other alternatives?

Note: I have a 15in HP Pavilion, the model number is 15dq000t, and the warranty ran out three months ago.
