This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    Wonderful route of my motherboard

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:16 AM PDT

Hello, I'm sharing this story so nothing like this happens with any of you. the moral of the story, be patient. First post btw

After years of convincing and saving up money, I've decided to build a pc. I'm a console gamer but Ive wanted a pc for so long. And Ive been watching linus for 5 years now so I already know how everything works.

Its the middle of the pandemic, July to be exact. Everything (pc wise) is overpriced and out of stock. especially power supplies. anyway, this story is about my motherboard. I ordered a Ryzen 5 3600. which means I was looking for motherboards that support 3rd gen ryzen out of the box. because I dont have another system to flash the bios on. Popular motherboard choice wouldve been the b450 tomahawk max. Seen it in many videos, CPULESS bios, great platform. but out of stock on every site in the world. My impatient ass started looking for in-stock good alternatives. After 2 weeks of research and compatibility checking, I landed on the b450m steel legend from asrock. was out of stock as well, but in every US site. note, I do not live in the US, middle east to be precise. The site that had it was amazon UK. and it did not ship to where I live in the middle east. So I ordered it, turns out it was a back order, to the US to a family member. but thats not the interesting part. I ordered it on 18th of June. Waited till was in stock, for it to ship from Poland, to a Netherlands for some reason, To the UK. Then to ship out to the US. That entire process took about a month Its 22nd of July, It has arrived at my relative. Ships out from the US to where I live in the middle east, Bahrain. Meanwhile I get the news I'm moving to Egypt :) and according to fedex's estimation, there has been a huge delay and it wont be shipped out till Mid August. At the same time, I'm now in Egypt, and the motherboard shipped out, to arrive in Bahrain. Arrives 18th of August, a friend picks it up and I cant ship it to egypt directly or I'll pay customs fees. My friend gives it to a family member, whose friend will travel egypt in a couple of days. The Family member today arrives in Egypt and I'm on the way to pick up the last piece of the puzzle! I already have every other part and now i'm going to finally build it!

What I learned, be patient because a week after it was dispatched from the UK, the MSi motherboard was back in stock. Be patient guys, also wanted to share a story for you to laugh at.

Edit: Thank you for the wholesome award!

    Picking out a monitor?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:17 PM PDT

In the process of trying to build my first pc and I'm trying to decide on a Monitor. Preferably I would like a 1080p 144 monitor (heaven forbid it also be able to tilt) but I'm also on a budget. I thought I had one picked out through amazon and it was ~$150 (AOC C24G1 24" ) until a few days ago when I was alerted that the seller (AOC) no longer is offering the monitor. Any recommendations for monitors that are similar and cost around $150 (or less)?

Never built PC before. Saw Linus's first person vid on how to do it. Afraid I'll screw something up if I try to build my own PC with no experience. What's a good way to get some experience without spending much money?

    1. Question in OP

    2. Dunno, should I rip up an old computer and see what's inside to get familiar with its parts? There are some old/dusty/nasty computers with no GPUs in my parent's house

    3. What else might you try?

I am extremely proud of this build because I knew nothing about computers at the start of quarantine, and thanks to tech tubers like LTT, Jayztwocents, Bitwit, and Paul's hardware (just to name a few) I am a fluent in the language of cpu. I love the PCMR community, am proud member. Please give some feedback and critical criticism. Thank You.

There seems to be quite a lot of "first build"-posts here... but is it okay if I still share my excitement?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:20 PM PDT

I'm a 18-year-old student and I've been hoping to get a good computer for a long long time. My last computer was a sub-500€ laptop that could run VALORANT at 30-40 fps on the lowest settings and CS:GO at 20-50 fps on the lowest settings.

I finally got fed up with my shitty laptop and took a student loan.

I have no regrets. I am happier than I've been since who knows when. The little things feel the best, like alt+tabbing out of games at lightning speed and not having your computer freeze on you when browsing Chrome.

Before you call me out on a bad decision - I understand what I did. I just want to enjoy life. It's been rough for me.

Specs, because I know you care:

    Corsair 500GB Force MP600 SSD-levy, M.2 2280, PCIe 4.0 x4, 134,90€

    SilverStone 700W Strider Essential ST70F-ES230, ATX-virtalähde, 49,90€

Seagate 2TB BarraCuda, sisäinen 3.5" kiintolevy, SATA III, 69,90€

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600, AM4, 3.6 GHz, 6-core, 199,00€

Asus Radeon RX 5700 XT STRIX OC GAMING -näytönohjain, 8GB, 469,90€

    BitFenix Nova, ATX-miditornikotelo, valkoinen, 37,90€

    Kingston 32GB (2x16GB) HyperX Fury, DDR4 3200MHz, CL16, 1.3, 139,90€

    Asus PRIME B550-PLUS, ATX-emolevy, 159,90€

I am going to change the power supply and case when Black Friday or Christmas arrives. I wanted to shave some money off ofthe budget a, so I thought I'd manage with a worse case and PSU for the time being. I know I shouldn't cheap out on the power supply, but it'll work for a few months. Gotta believe :>

What is the difference between an expensive motherboard and a cheap one?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:37 AM PDT

I plan to use it for gaming and I plan to buy AMD Ryzen 5 3600, but as I am looking for reviews and suggestions, people seems to just give opinions on B450 or B550. But when I look at the PC online store around my place, the price difference is just high.

Anybody can explain to me what's the difference?
    Thanks in advance!

Client wants Fastest Computer Available with $7500 budget

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:27 PM PDT

My client of about 8 years called and said he's sick of running out of space, memory, and having to buy a new PC every 4 years-- he's always bought pre-built PCs from Frys or bestbuy and worried about the specs later. I told him he has always been limited by a budget. I built him a really great desktop PC for a budget of about $2700 5 years ago. He has since filled it up with his outlook data file, HQ pictures for his reports, and autocad and ACT database files.

It's been about 5 years since I built one, and I don't have the latest knoweldge on what he would need, so, here's the requirements that he gave me, hoping to see what you all would recommend.

    • Fastest processor available (no brand preference)
    • Maxed out memory (I'm assuming DDR5?)
    • 5tb of SSD hard drive space on a single drive (his requirement, doesn't want a D: drive)
    • Support 6 displays at high graphics settings, he does autocad and photos. 4k is not required, but might as well throw that in if he's ready to spend.
    • No peripherals like monitors or crazy cases with lights and crazy fans, just business use but powerful AF.

Can any of you recommend a build out that would work for this situation?

    Can I ask for help?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:26 AM PDT

I posted on a different subreddit asking for help doing diag on my PC - didn't get much of a response, thinking maybe I need to ask people who, like me, built their own PCs.

I'm capable of doing my own repairs but do not know how to diag this problem properly.

The main issue I'm experiencing is the computer is unable to hold a stable internet connection. There have been other performance issues that I think might be related to the network activity, such as hogging resources when I'm using an application thats trying to connect and failing, or sometimes (maybe once per power cycle) the computer will drastically speed up the fans for no apparent reason, while an error message noise plays several times in a row, but with no actual messages or indications what went wrong.

As far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with my ISP, Router, or even my Wireless USB Wifi adaptor. I think there is an issue with the USB controller, but again, I don't know how to diag that for certain.

Sorry this post is long, just looking for some direction from more experience people.

TL:DR - Home-built Computer can't maintain a stable network connection and its ruining my Fantasy Football drafts and zoom meetings!

Hardware: ASUSTek Motherboard Sabertooth 990FX/Gen3 R2.0

    AMD FX-8350

First build, looking to reuse my GTX 1050Ti and my 250GB SSD in an otherwise midrange build

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:11 AM PDT

Hey! I wanna build a PC mostly for gaming, maybe a little streaming to friends, and occasional video editing (nothing too heavy).

The only redeemable parts of my current PC are the GTX 1050Ti, and the Samsung SSD 750 EVO 250gb. My budget isn't the biggest currently, and I feel like I can get away with delaying the GPU upgrade until I need it more or until I find a really good deal. Right now I don't play any super graphics intensive games, so I'll probably make an upgrade down the line, within a year from now maybe.

My ballpark budget is max 600€, but cheaper is better. Buying my parts in Sweden. This is what I got so far:

    Slot Part Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 179€
    GPU reusing GTX 1050Ti -
RAM 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX High Performance 3200MHz 54€
MoBo MSI X470 GAMING PLUS MAX 104€
    PSU Seasonic FOCUS GX-650 80+ Gold 89€
    SSD 1 Intel 660p Series 512 GB 52€
    SSD 2 reusing Samsung 750 EVO 250 GB -
Case NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case 75€

    Plus 38€ VAT

    Total: 588€

    My main concerns are:

    • How well this will work with my current GPU as well as a future upgrade (I'll never get a super high-end card, I might get a GTX 1660 Super or some other affordable mid-range card)
    • What about the fans? I see some people buying additional 120mm fans. Are the fans that come with the case not enough? And similarly, should I buy a separate HSF or is the stock cooler from the Ryzen 5 3600 good enough? I don't mind spending some here if that's what's recommended.
    • And as a whole, I'm not 100% confident in my selection since this is my first build. I might need a reality check on whether it's reasonable to keep my 1050Ti. I also don't know if I'm overspending on the PSU, I saw a couple of cheaper options, but PCpartpicker noted that my motherboard has an extra 4-pin ATX power connector that I couldn't use with the cheaper PSUs, and I also read that if you're buying a new PSU it might be a good call to pay a little extra to get a modular one (this one was also a decent price and the cheaper one I was eyeing was out of stock). It's my first build and my budget's tight so the part selection is a little daunting haha

    Monitor recommendations - 1440p / 350€ (420$)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:48 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I already have a build ready but I'm not very well versed on monitors, so I'm looking for recommendations.

    Requirements:

    - Budget around 350€ (it can be a bit more if it is really worth it).

    - IPS 1440p monitor for gaming and photo editing. Color fidelity is somewhat important.

    - I don't need a super fast response time because I mostly play single player games.

    - Brightness above 300 cd/m²

    - Screen size from 24" to 27" is enough.

    -----

I actually found a very good candidate: the Acer XF270HU 27" 144Hz. But sadly, I was not able to find the monitor here in Germany.

Thank you in advance for the recommendations.

Air Cooled CPU, Liquid cooled GPU?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:00 PM PDT

So I have a Thermaltake P3 case where I'm basically not using the right side of the case.

I am going to upgrade my GPU in the near future, and was wondering about a rad setup on the right side of the case only for the GPU. This is my first build and I have no experience with liquid cooling, so not sure if this can be done.

It's an Aorus system so I was hoping to pair a higher end Aorus GPU with something like a RGB AIO Liquid Cooler, but not sure if it can be done?

I would probably just go liquid cooling all the way but bought a non-refundable Aorus ATC800 and can't mentally just replace it yet.

    Appreciate any ideas/advice/tips.

    Need help building a PC

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:54 PM PDT

Hi, after doing quite some research I've come to these following parts:

    Ryzen 5 3600
    Nvidia RTX 2060 Super
    2x8GB RAM(3000MHz)
    250GB M.2 Nvme Storage
    2TB WD Blue
    750W PSU
    Foxin FGC-9901 Titan (Black)

I need help figuring out a motherboard. Is it okay to use a 2nd Gen motherboard or would it be better if I get a 3rd Gen motherboard? Also is it worth getting the 3600x, I hope I can play most of the games with at least 80-90+fps on the highest settings. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks.

ps: I will be adding extra fans later on. Should I get a smaller PSU?

New builders, Semi modular power supplies are just as good as modular power supplies.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:18 AM PDT

I built a pc and decided to go for a modular power supply. All it had connected was the motherboard cable and the cpu cable, which all pc builds have! Unless you have a special build (which usually cost $3000+), buy a semi modular power supply. It's simpler, cheaper and the same for 99.9% of builds.

I haven't built a PC in years and I want to make sure my parts list is reasonable

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:37 PM PDT

I haven't picked PC parts in nearly 5 years and I wanted to make sure I wasn't making any big mistakes with my Ryzen 5 2600 build with a GTX 1070 in a Mini ITX case. Here is the parts list.

    Other info:

    • I already bought the GTX 1070.
    • The 4TB hard drive I am carrying over from my old PC.

Should I spend the extra $60 on a Ryzen 5 3600? I don't play any crazy games (I'm currently using a GTX 560 TI) but, I do run GPU intensive apps for password cracking.

Is now a bad time to buy a PC? I hear there are a lot of supply problems at the moment.

    Ram question.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:27 AM PDT

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right sub but I have a question about ram. I have an old build from 2012 that is low end potato tier with 4gb of ddr3. I have no money to upgrade right now but the thing I can upgrade is ram to 8gb total. Besides chrome not slowing my pc to a crawl will it help anything else? Any performance increase on WoW? Basically I have no idea what ram even does. I know that windows 10 takes a crapton by itself so i should see some difference. Just not sure what exactly besides the amount of programs I can have open at a time. Mostly interested in gaming. Thanks for any answers.

My specs just in case anyone wants to have a good laugh.

Question about getting a NVMe m.2 SSD

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:21 PM PDT

Will I see a performance increase if I upgrade from an 840 Evo SSD to a Black SN750 NVMe m.2 drive?

A few people told me that the performance different won't even be noticeable, but load times would be better. They said that the upgrade won't really change anything noticeably.

    What do you guys think?

Testing AMD GPU in a system with an Nvidia GPU

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:08 PM PDT

A friend of mine has an RX 480 that has been behaving strangely (screen flickering, games crashing with weird artifacts, blue screen a couple of times). We tried reinstalling drivers, games and practically everything we could on the software side. We also tried reseating the card multiple times with no changes. I lent him my old RX 470 to see if it works correctly, and it does, so the problem must be the card.

After that, he ended up buying my old card and giving me the broken RX 480 and I decided to open it up and check if I can see any obvious problems. It was VERY dirty, and there was almost no thermal paste on the die (it was around the die). I cleaned it up and applied new thermal paste and now I want to test it. If it works I can save my buddy some money so he can buy an upgrade instead of a downgrade.

Now, my system has an RTX 2060 installed and I'm not sure how to test the RX 480. Do I replace the 2060 with the RX 480, install AMD drivers and test is that way? Should I uninstall the Nvidia before installing the AMD card? I could go to his house and test it on his machine but I kinda want it to be a surprise.

    Building a PC

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:14 PM PDT

I'm just curious how much money would I actually save building my own versus custom building on a website and having them put it together. Roughly would spend 1500$. I looked up one custom PC's part list and was only 200$ cheaper for a 1500$ build. I guess if that's what the average savings (buying all new) I probably wouldn't bother doing it myself. But if I could save 300-500 then I might consider.
