Upgrading RAM on an ASUS G751J

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:34 PM PDT

    Hello!

To preface, I have very little knowledge of computer hardware. I scooped up an ASUS G751J a few years back for very cheap and am interested in upgrading the RAM, as the new game Grounded is dropping a lot of frames no matter how low I put the graphics. I am pretty confident I can struggle my way through the installation with a youtube video, given it seems pretty easy on this model, however I have no idea what to purchase in order to increase my laptop's performance.

I'm located in Canada and could really use some help figuring out what is an upgrade that is good value without breaking the bank and will be compatible with the rest of the machine.

    Thanks!

[HELP] SCREEN PANEL UPGRADE Asus TUF A17 FA706II-H7019R

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:31 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

While I was looking for a laptop to purchase for general photography and editing, I came across a pretty well specd machine - Asus TUF A17 FA706II-H7019R. However, it's screen panel has really terrible (68 per cent) adobe srgb reproduction for the type of work I do and I would like to find an upgrade for it.

That's why I went on Google and Ebay hunt to find at least some info on what screen panel is being used or even better, find myself a replacement one with the right pin out and a bit more decent color reproduction even with 60Hz, since the original refresh rate of 120Hz isn't something I am after or concerned about.

Maybe there is someone knowledgeable about this matter and could give me an advice where I could find a schematic or more details about this whole ordeal?

    Thanks in advance,Ray

I'm looking for a laptop for my study. I'm going to study Mechanical Engineering, so I need a pretty powerful laptop that is capable of running SOLIDWORKS. I want something that looks nice, and not a heavy gamer with rainbow colours all over. What do you guys think is my best choice?

    Legion 5 vs Nitro 5 (2020)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:20 AM PDT

Tried checking ASUS TUF A15 but decide not to buy it due to thermal issues. So I am here again, by the way I am not a heavy gamer (Dota 2, LOL, DN, Minecraft are games that I would love to play) and I will use it most of the time for engineering school.

Which is the better the deal? In terms of price in my country: Legion 5 $996.34 while Nitro 5 $935.24. I used CAD (2D most of the time), Adobe premier and photoshop.

FYI: Legion 5 is on Ryzen 5 - 4600H with 120 hertz while Nitro 5 is on Intel 5 - 10300H with 144 hertz. Error: It should be HHD and SSD.

Why I am considering Nitro? It's cheaper and there might be a possible upgrade so I can maximize my budget which is $1000. However legion 5 has great reviews based from my research, like the thermals are good and lesser issues.

    Nitro 5 or Lenovo L340?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:04 PM PDT

Hello, I'd like to buy a laptom from these two: Lenovo: i5 10300h, Gtx 1650, 8gb Ram, 256Gb SSD and 120 hz. And Nitro 5: i5 9300h, Gtx 1650, 8gb Ram, 1Tb HDD and 60 hz. I've read about the pros in Lenovo : Beter refresh rate, the aesthetics, beter CPU. And cons: Thermal throttling, single channel (Ram) and technical assistance for an expansión in the memory. Also the Nitro 5 comes with mouse and headset. These two laptos are in the same price (800$), so what laptop should I choose? Thanks

Acer Nitro 5 Broken Screen Frame

Acer Nitro 5 Broken Screen Frame

    Hello,

I purchased an Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-51-55WL) from Amazon back in November 2017. Recently, the left screen frame hinge broke as in the following picture. There are 2 plastic pieces that hold the front and back frames together. One of them broke.

    https://preview.redd.it/o4kxkycr8ne51.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76f67bf006d599cad3384feaf0078783c79c3e1d

I have no problem with it personally, but I want to sell it, and something like that would drop the price by quite a lot. This seems to be a common issue and is usually fixed by warranty, but I was out of it when it broke.

The best I could find is to purchase the whole front frame (the one contains Acer logo from outside) since it's the one that contains the plastic pieces, but that will cost ~$70 including shipping. Is there another way to fix it? It seems ridiculous to spend $70 just for a piece of plastic.

If there is no other way, would the $70 prevent the price from dropping by a respective amount, or I am just wasting money?

    Here are the laptop specs:

    CPU: i5-7300HQ
    GPU: GTX 1050 Ti
    RAM: 16GB (Originally 8GB, I added another 8GB)
    Storage: 256GB SSD

What is a good price to sell it at with both situations (hinge fixed or not fixed)?

    Helios 300 (2020) or MSI GP65 Leopard 10SEK

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:40 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am in the market for a laptop and I am currently deciding between the Helios 300 (2020 version) and MSI GP65 Leopard 10SEK. Located in Europe, so prices suck anyway..

    Both have i7 10750H 2.6GHz, RTX 2060, 512GB SSD, 144Hz, 15.6", 16GB DDR4.

GP65 also has a 1TB HDD and a slightly better battery. Also it's slightly lighter as I am planning on carrying it with me from time to time. Helios is about 200 euros cheaper.

I've read conflicting arguments on both sides. Help be decide!

Should I wait for a 'Back to school sale'? I doubt these laptops will go on sale where I live..

Is my method of cleaning laptops safe?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:06 PM PDT

I cleaned my old laptop by getting a face cloth, making the cloth wet, then squeezing as much water as I could out of it, before going over all the surfaces that needed cleaned - generally the palmrest, keyboard, trackpad and lid. I always avoid vents and ports to prevent water getting in them. Afterwards, I leave the laptop for for at least 5 or 10 minutes to ensure all the water is evaporated.

Now I have a new laptop. My new laptop was pretty expensive, I want to keep it for 6-7 years, and I don't want to damage it.

I'm now questioning - is this safe? Is there any problems likely to arise from cleaning my laptop in this way? Excluding alcohol, what other methods are there if it is bad?

Laptop heating up while turned off

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:26 AM PDT

I bought Asus's laptop with R5 4500U cpu a week ago. I've been using it just fine but today it just heated up super hot while turned OFF. I turned on the laptop and turned it off again, which seemed to solve the heat up. I'm curious why this happened and worried it could happen again. Does anyone have similar experience? The specific model is Asus vivobook M433

Wanna get one of these today. For college work, illustration and light-med 3d modeling / UE4

I want something thin and solid with an accurate screen. It won't be put under super heavy loads often I don't think, I play a game less than once a year lol. Most of the time is sketching, typing, and modeling. (I use a separate wacom tablet so it doesn't matter if the screen has touch or not)

    Removable processor on a laptop.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:22 AM PDT

I have an old Acer Aspire 4750g lying around and i eventually took it apart to get some parts mainly get the 500 gb hard drive and put it on an enclosure, however there are many broken parts on the laptop like keyboard, trackpad, webcam, power button, and some ports so it wasnt very cost effective to repair it and while i was disassembling it i found out the processor was removable like on desktop. Note that i shorted the mother board while i was booting it up and i didnt notice the keyboard (with a metal back) was touching the motherboard so some sparks flew and it never booted up again. The processor was a i3 2nd gen. Do i have any use for this? Can i put it on desktop motherboard?

AUX mic issue in ASUS GA-502DU

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:56 AM PDT

My in-line mic won't work when I plug in my earphones, I have tried 3 different earphones (Razer Hammerhead, AKG, Apple one's) this is very frustating. Bluetooth headphones with mic works fine, in-line mic is neither visible in device manager or in sounds settings or control panel.
