Manjaro 20.04: How to reduce KDE Plasma's memory usage? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:18 AM PDT Switched to KDE Manjaro recently, having used XFCE and Gnome before. Neither one really did it for me, but this DE has got me settled. The only issue I'm facing is that its taking a little too much memory (~600M) on my already low memory laptop, so I was wondering if there was anything I could do to reduce, or lower this number. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:38 AM PDT Hi, I've recently switched my PC from Windows10 to PopOS. Everything is working as expected except for the wifi. Here are the things I've attempted: Re-install the OS, and update all of the drivers. Went to the official Intel website and downloaded the .tar.gz files from there. Copied the I've even updated the intel-firmware directory. Nothing has happened so far. What do I do? My wifi chip: Intel Centrino Advanced -n 6235 Here is my log of lspci Edit: I fixed it! I didn't know I had to manually turn on the Wi-fi chip in the BIOS! This is how I feel right now. Windows can fuck off with their uPdAteS now. [link] [comments] |

Did I just brick 2 of my USB drives? Read-only--no longer able to be formatted Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:34 AM PDT Update: TL;DR: Both my previously working flash drives are now read-only and I'm not able to format it (attempting to recover from failed Raspberry Pi server that ran for nearly a year with no issues and is now read-only). I've tried DDing my backed up Raspbian image to one of the USB drives and that ended up read-only and seemingly unable to be re-formatted. Then I manually partitioned another USB drive for the boot and rootfs partitions and attempted to copy over rsync'ed-backed up data from the two partitions respectively and that also resulted in the drive being read-only. Now I have 3 flash drives read-only with one of them being my read-only RPI server that is no longer bootable to tty.
I cannot see any information on the drive /dev/sde nor can I create a new partition table or re-format it. I have Raspberry Pi running on my USB drive for nearly a year. Today, I noticed I couldn't access the server and it on reboot, I see some messages regarding kernel panic and not fully booting up to tty. I shut it down and plugged it into my desktop system to back up all data and notice that both the boot and rootfs partitions are read-only. I backed up the system using both Anyway, I figured the problem might be the USB drive, so I decided to dd back to a working flash drive whose partitions and partition table were removed/wiped with Been a frustrating Sunday, trying to restore the server before the new week begins. Any advice is much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:42 AM PDT I had a decently powerful gaming laptop I was using for playing around with Linux and running an ark server (on windows because I knew how to do it). I decided to go full Ubuntu and run my server on Linux but after installing the os and updating/upgrading and installing NVIDIA drivers I noticed it took way to long to start up and the os was a bit slow. I'm running 20.04 LTS 64bit and my laptop has an Intel i7-7700hq, 16 gb ram and, a NVIDIA 1060 mobile. can anyone tell my why It might be running slow? [link] [comments] |
The switch on the gnome-extensions website is not working.. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:13 AM PDT Hi, to customize my freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04 I wanted to get some gnome extensions.I installed tweak-tools and chrome-gnome-shell, and added the gnome browser-extension to my browser (Vivaldi). However, when I want to use these on/off-switch to install a new extensions, the button just moves to 'on' but nothing happens. When I realod the page, the button is turned to off again and I don't find the extensions anywhere und installed extensions on the website or in tweak-tools. I have tried it in Firefox, but same there. Did anyone had the same problem? Am I missing a package of some kind? EDIT: its solved by just generally updating [link] [comments] |

Hey I want to switch to Linux from Windows 10! Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:38 AM PDT I use Windows 10 as my primary OS. It is good but I want to switch to Linux. I used Ubuntu a little bit but it is not that great. Here is some info about me: I am a programmer. I love minimalist and modern designs. I am a huge fan of a dock like in MacOS. My laptop's specs: 8gb DDR4 RAM, 256gb SSD, a 10th gen Intel Core i5 processor, Intel UHD graphics and Nvidia 230mx GPU Which distro do you recommend to me? [link] [comments] |
I want to have Arch but I am a bit scared having too much problems Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:32 PM PDT I have been on windows for my whole life (18) and never tried any linux distro. I want to have arch because I want to learn as much as possible and I don't have the time to do a LFS. But I am a bit worried to have too much problem with it... So I have some questions: does manjaro feels like arch but with an "autopilot" ? Does the desktop environment (I am planning on i3) on arch take care of things like multi monitorÃng etc or I'll have to configure it myself ? I have basics to indermediate skills in programming, how much will i be able to customise my application in arch ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:00 AM PDT I am using a Raspberry Pi Zero and after boot, I am presented with the login screen. The issue I have is that the cursor moves all the way to the left of the screen and then I am unable to type anything (image included). This means I cannot log in. Anyone know what is going wrong and how to fix this? Thank you!! [link] [comments] |
Window elements won’t update unless I move the window or change to another one and change back Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:46 AM PDT I first noticed it on Firefox. I would click a link or scroll and nothing would happen. After alt-tabbing the window would update to display the correct info. At first I thought this was a problem exclusive to Firefox (chromium worked fine), but the issue has since migrated to Thunderbird, Dolphin, and even Konsole I run Manjaro with KDE Plasma. The problem probably isn't a potato computer, as it can run last gem but still large games like Skyrim or Fallout NV with no trouble [link] [comments] |

Why aren't my partitions available when trying to install Pop!_OS? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:22 AM PDT I'm trying to dual boot Pop!_OS with my Windows 10 machine, but I don't see any available partitions. What I'd expect to see are two NTFS drives, both of which are 500GB in size - one for the SSD that came with my device and the second one (the one I want to install the distro into), which I installed myself. Why is this happening, and how can I remedy this issue? Picture below. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:19 AM PDT When I use POP OS, the laptop freezes for a quick second at regular intervals. When gaming I get huge frame time spikes every couple of seconds. I have problems with booting Linux. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 02:27 PM PDT I just installed Linux mint on my pc, with windows 10 on a different hard drive. But the GRUB menu thing where you select what os to boot doesn't show up and windows 10 automatically starts up. There weren't any errors during the installation, what could be the problem? (Its my first time with Linux, so don't hate please.) [link] [comments] |
Wine won't install because "Package dependencies cannot be resolved"? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 02:15 PM PDT I'm trying to install Wine-stable from the Software Manager, but I'm getting this error: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. [link] [comments] |
sudo apt list --upgradables vs apt list --upgradables Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:54 PM PDT When you type "sudo apt update" and have a few packages that could be updated, one gets prompted (in mint atleast) with an output stating that said packages can be listed with "apt list --upgradables". After reading up on what this command does, i stumbled onto a thread stating that one should not use this command with sudo, since it also lists kernel metapackages. However, no reason is given for this statement. Now, i understand that when one has the option to not use sudo, commands should mostley be entered without sudo. But i don't really unterstand why that would be important in this case and what the kernel packages might have to with this. Thus, any advice and pointers are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

huge unusual page padding in zathura Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:00 AM PDT The page padding is set to 1. Which works fine with most of my pdf files. But some pdf show huge gap between them. If I open them with a different pdf reader it looks fine. I don't know why zathura behaves this way with some of the pdf files. I want to solve this problem badly, because I am really enjoying zathura otherwise. Please tell me if you know how to fix this. A screenshot is added. [link] [comments] |
