Laptop for Prospective CS Major + Gaming ($1400), US

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
No higher than 1400, 1500 is OK if the price is likely to go down during Thanksgiving/Black Friday
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form Factor: No interest in 2 in 1, ultrabook etc
Build Quality: Very important, need a solid laptop with a good frame. Looking for the premium laptop feel to last me through college and further
Performance: Very important, the processor should stay viable for the next 4 years at the least (been eyeing Ryzen chips, if possible)
Battery Life: Important, would prefer around 5+ hours on light use (browsing, videos, text editing)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Definitely would prefer a lighter laptop (under 4-4.5 pounds MAX). Thinness isn't as important, but definitely a plus if possible. Portability is key
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14" is preferred, 15" is acceptable.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not necessarily cad or photo editing, but will be playing a decent amount of games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Skyrim, warzone, valorant, black ops, maybe assassins creed. I will be playing a decent amount of games for sure
FPS: I would say definitely above 60 on high settings. Around 90 or higher at mid
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I don't expect a touchscreen, but if there is one like that, I might be interested.
Definitely need good build quality and solid keyboard. Touchpad isn't as important because I have a mouse
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I will be using it (as previously mentioned) in Computer Science, but also gaming. I truly appreciate any suggestions I get, this subreddit seems very helpful for newbies who want a good laptop.

Help me choose between 3 Lenovo laptops

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:52 PM PDT

    1. Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14" Laptop, AMD Ryzen 7 4700U
    2. Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14.0" Laptop, Intel Core i5-1035G1
    3. Lenovo ideapad S540 14.0" Touch Laptop, Intel Core i5-10210U

I need a laptop under $600 with good screen quality (anti-glare), decent webcam, can perform basic tasks, and will last me at least 4 years. Basically it's AMD Ryzen 7 vs. Intel i5, but I have no idea which one is better. Also, I'm not sure of the differences between 2 and 3 other than the touchscreen.

Which one of these these are best? How would you rank them? Thanks!

Laptop mostly for gaming - $3000 USD

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:36 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$3,000 USD. Purchasing in USA
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Build quality is key - I do not want to have to replace it in a year because the hinge on the lid has snapped the frame. Performance is also important. I would like to give myself some room in case I want to start playing games that require more performance later, but it has to at least meet the requirements for what I currently play. Form factor is equally important - I want an ultrabook or a traditional; nothing that turns into a tablet. Battery life is not very important at all, because it will be plugged in most of the time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Not very important - it will mostly be stationary, so portability isn't a big issue. Preferably not crazy thick though.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.15"+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.No video/photo editing. For gaming, mostly Dota 2 and minecraft, some Skyrim. I also want to be able to run a VirtualBox virtual machine (Ubuntu) well enough to play video without performance issues, preferably while also playing video outside the machine.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Dota 2 (better or best video settings) - Minecraft (60fps with a reasonable amount of mods, nothing too over the top) - Skyrim (with medium setting and some mods)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Absolutely must be touch-screen and have a back-lit keyboard (rgb keyboard is a plus, but not essential). SSD would be nice (or hybrid) - preferably 1TB total storage, but I could live with 500GB, especially if SSD is part of that.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As mentioned above, I'm looking for a something that will last at least 2-3 years (assuming I take care of it). I'm willing to pay a lot to get good performance and high build quality. I'd like to get more performance than I currently need so I am not locked out of more performance intensive games, but at the same time, I don't want to waste a lot of money getting the absolute best performance possible.

    ryzen 4600h with 1650 or intel 10300h with 1650ti

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:48 AM PDT

Same laptop model and price but different configs. I plan to play some lightweight esports titles but otherwise use it for productivity. I know that the 4600h outperforms the 10300h but do you guys think its worth sacrificing the 1650ti for it? I should also mention that the ryzen one has a 120hz screen as well but I will plug in a 144hz monitor when I game so it doesn't matter as much.

Looking for a Convertible (Max around 1000€)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:42 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    ~1000€

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Not really

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Convertible - not detachable - with good overall performance, build quality and battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    1.5kg max

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Optimally 3:2 or 16:10. but fine with 16:9

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light photo editing srgb and if any gaming esports like cs or rocket league

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Dont really care

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch, good input devices, good build quality, battery life for a day

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would like an Zen 2 Chip. dGPU not needed. Ports would be nice, (or at least a good dongle that covers most ports all in one).

    Hello fellow redditors,

I am in need for a new Notebook (max around 1000€; lower=better). Since it is meant as an all rounder (private and work/study), a compact convertible (not detachable) seems like a good option due to the occasional scheme-drawing/note-taking. I will not game on it - and if I do, most likely esports titles.

I come from an hp probook 430 gen 2. and while the size is great, I definitely need a 1080p screen and more power. 16:10 would be a nice extra, however 16:9 is "fine" - especially if I can use it vertically as well as horizontally. I also would like to havegood build quality/longevity and useful ports, but these are also rare these days.

I heard praise about the envy x360 lineup with ryzen, but since my probook while in total lasting around 6 years - with two repairs in between and now 2 failing batteries - I am not very convinced of up and its quality.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Im having problems deciding a laptop for school

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:49 AM PDT

So recently I've been looking for a laptop that would last for a very long time (4+ years) (Maybe this is irrelevant). I've found 2 models that have caught my eye lately.

    1. HP laptop with the option of AMD Ryzen™ 3 3250U (2.6 GHz, up to 3.5 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, 2 cores) + AMD Radeon™ graphics

    2. HP laptop with the option of Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 (1.0 GHz, up to 3.6 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)+Intel® UHD graphics

I will upgrade both of them with 16gb of ram and a 2tb hdd + 500gb ssd

What matters to me is that, as dumb as it sounds, the Intel version doesn't have a ethernet port. I've always liked a wired internet connection since my wifi sucks. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the Intel Core i5-10135G1 is better than the AMD Ryzen 3 3250U.

The thing is, the Intel one doesn't have a ethernet port, while the AMD one does. So I dont know if to go with AMD and ethernet port, or Intel and buy an USB-C to ethernet adapter

P.S: I don't plan on doing gaming, it's just for college and university

I'll add things and upgrades especifications if asked.

Laptop for occassional gaming and programming (40 000 CZK ~ 1800 USD)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:38 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      40 000 CZK , Czech Republic
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      build quality, performance, battery
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not that much but I hate "gamer" design laptops. I prefer XPS, ASUS GA-502, Razer Blade designs
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
ocassional photoshop, sony vegas editing and not the most demanding games like CSGO, LOL, Fortnite, War Thunder
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
CSGO, LOL, Fortnite, War Thunder @ 1080p, best and 60 FPS+. of course I'd like some headroom there for possible other more demanding games
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
no HDD, preferably metal build, minimalistic design
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My current laptop is HP Pavilion Gaming 15-bc007nc (i7-6700HQ, GTX 960M) and it throttles so much that I cannot play any of those games above without it just underclocking so much that FPS drop from 60+ to 20 and its unplayable for a few seconds. Also the laptop is quite noisy just idle. I have changed the thermal paste on the CPU and there is no dust.So basically I would like a slick laptop that doesnt overheat but doesnt have to have the top specs.

    (Hopefully) back to school laptop

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:06 AM PDT

As I hopefully will go to university this year, I would like a better laptop. From experience, I would like it to be a Convertible/ 2 in 1. I will study IT, so some horsepower would be good (I would like AMD, but Intel also would be ok) Good laptops that are nearly perfect is the HP Envy x360 lineup, but the 13inch version is said to be uncomfartable for bigger hands, while the 15inch version seems to have a pretty dimm screen. My budget would be 800-1000€.

    The Form LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    ~£1,000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes but ideally I'd like something new and reliable

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

High build quality and performance. Decent battery life is nice but it would remain in my dorm room most of the time so not essential.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not particularly important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming. Would like to be able to run most Total War games on highest settings at a decent frame rate

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Total war series, ~60fps+ at highest if possible

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good input devices and high quality keyboard

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Budget flexible. Decent sized internal storage also desirable. Not sure I'd use RTX On for most games as it seems to decimate the frame rate on any game I've previously tried it on

Looking for a similar laptop to Zephyrus G15

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:50 AM PDT

Hi guys, so I was thinking about buying this model of ASUS Zephyrus G15, which is currently priced at ~1160 EUR. Why G15? Well first of all because it's much cheaper than its G14 counterpart on that website, plus there aren't many other options available. I also like that it's portable, pretty powerful for its size and price and it does come with options for upgrade (one more M2 slot, one RAM slot upgradable). The difference in weight does not bother me, and I'd like a bigger, 15in screen.

What I don't like at this model though is the screen (high response rate, low RGB levels, brightness, compared to the 240hz model), I also heard some bad things about its keyboard, high temps when gaming and no biometrics.

Would it be worth paying almost 300EUR more to get the 240hz model with a better display, or are there any other good laptop alternatives for Uni and Gaming?

I'm moving to university soon and I want to buy a laptop with both decent battery life and relatively future proof for gaming. I'm not sure if I'd bother using RTX On since it seems to absolutely decimate the frame rate of most games played on laptops within my price range

    Thanks in advance :)

    Gaming Laptop around $600

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 06:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600, in U.S.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery Life doesn't really matter to me, more concerned with specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not really, maybe 15"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some games, Path of Exile, Sea of Thieves, Total War titles, Wasteland 3.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above for games, graphic settings don't mean too much to me, I'm fine if I need to play on Medium settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Doesn't matter, a good keyboard would be a plus though

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I travel a lot more for work and need something while I'm on the road. Budget is $600 but if there's anything less than that even better! Thanks!

    Laptop for gaming and programming

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:05 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      2000 Usd
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Im hoping to get something that has a good build quality. In terms of performance, I'd of course expect it to get a low battery life, but I'd like to expect it to run for a long time when not gaming (youtube videos, visual studio code, none intensive stuffs)/
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I dont mind if it's heavy. I'd prefer it to be thin, but if I can get better cooling on thick ones, I'd go with that.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      At least 15 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Dota 2, Seige, Android studio ( and other programming stuffs),Unity, Adobe premier, Blender and whatever's used in Machine learning because in the future I'd like to study it.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
At least the level before Ultra Graphics. In terms of Fps, anything above 100 would be nice.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good build quality, I wanna make sure I can use it for at least 5 or 7 years. It should at least have a high refresh rate screen or a 4k screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've seen the MSI P65 Creator-1084, it looks nice but then I saw a laptop called sager in amazon. It has WAY better specs and lower price but I'm worried about it's build quality and thermals; and also it doesnt have a 4k or a high refresh rate screen. The sager one's thick but I dont mind it with the specs I'm getting. Maybe there's something else than I havent seen that might contest to this laptops?

The rog as premium feel where as the hp offers a normal hdd with a ssd. Rog only offers a single ssd. The thing thats annoying me is hp has a 80W 2070 whereas Rog has a 90W and its benchmarks show it close to a normal laptop 2070. Help which should i go for. Hp does come with gsync and thunderbolt. But rog has premium look and is slim with proper rgb logo and vent lightning plus its sleek with its bezzels. I am a programmer and a gamer. Help guys. Both cost same

Suggest a laptop for a traveling 3D modeler and render artist?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 12:24 AM PDT

Budget: 2000-3000 eu (perhaps slightly more if truly needed) Location: Europe

I am a cg artist and I need a very powerful laptop that will allow me to use vray, 3ds max and photoshop comfortably. However, I'd also like to use it for gaming purposes occasionally. (Triple A titles).

    My main requirements:

Very fast processing power A great screen with vivid colours and detail (stylus functionality would be a huge plus) A powerful gpu that will last for some years to come

I need a laptop specifically for its portability as my work requires me to travel from office to office or for me to work from home. I won't be working on the go though so a particularly lightweight model isn't a priority. I'd usually settle in one location with adequate power supplies and won't move for hours on end whilst working.

My main priority would be a powerful cpu followed by ram and gpu. I've been particularly interested in the ryzen 9 processors as they seem to be the most powerful and not too expensive. However, many models come with weaker gpus and that is a little off putting.

I would definitely need an Nvidia graphics card as Vray's hybrid rendering uses cuda. Many ryzen CPUs only come with rtx 2060 though whilst intel variants go up to rtx 2080 supers. I understand that rendering mainly requires raw cpu power but I don't particularly like the idea of having a non upgradeable weaker gpu as id still like to game with this laptop for some years to come. AMD laptops also don't have a thunderbolt or usb 4 output so an eGpu is also off the table. Perhaps it might be better to go for a high end intel processor for this reason.

However, I have been reading that usb 4 functionality will be coming to amd at some point in the near future, so maybe that would be worth me waiting?

RAM is also important and I require a minimum of 32gb. The possibility to upgrade would be ideal.

As for a screen, this needs to be bright and detailed. I'd eventually need to invest in a cintiq drawing tablet which is very pricey, so it would be nice if the screen also comes with a high quality stylus drawing function, however this isn't a priority.

I also understand intel will be releasing Tigerlake in the next few days. Would these processors be available in top of the line, high end laptops though? From my research they seem to be geared towards mid to low range units- but I could be wrong.

    Thank you for reading!

Hey guys, this is for a friend... He is looking for a decent Gaming Laptop, that doesn't weigh more than 2,5kg. The Laptop should have a RTX 2060 and the processor at least 6 cores. The budget: 1500€.

Too many options... Too little time (<$1000 USA)

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Under $1,000 perferable but willing to stretch to max $1200 if it's worth the upgrade

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes!

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    From most to least important:

Ultrabook form factor > battery life > build quality > performance

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinnes isn't a deal breaker but less than 4 pounds

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 or 14 inch. Again, portability is my main concern.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Would like to be able to edit photos with Adobe Lightroom but that is probably most intensive task. Won't be gaming at all.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Love me a good keyboard but I'm pretty non-opinionated about it so doesn't really matter. I do not want a touch screen but if it has it I won't be mad. Need at least a micro SD card reader or regular SD card reader and an HDMI output. Don't need 3.5mm/multiple usbs/special ports.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm mainly looking for a on the go laptop. My last laptop was a bulky gaming laptop that I got to be able to game and be portable. I now realize that doesn't fit my preferences so I am moving to a desktop for intensive needs and an ultraportable laptop for on the go. My main concern is portability and battery life, I want it to be easy to carry around and last me all day if need be. Most intensive task would be Adobe Lightroom for editing photos while away from home. Build quality and looks are important to me so I don't want to hyper focus on specs and completely lose visual appeal or quality of materials. I would enjoy it having a new AMD 4000 series chip but if an Intel build better suits my needs I am open to it.

Thanks in advance for y'alls help! There are so many new options with AMD vs Intel and then all the supply issues I just don't have enough time to keep up.

    Simple laptop for simple games

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:42 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm relatively clueless as far as laptops and their capabilities go. My wife really wants one so she can play the sims 2(specifically) and some sort of sim theme park game. Which I know steam has some theme park style games to choose from. My question is, do I need to buy a gaming laptop to support these games or is there something basic and with a smaller price tag that will work? Will anything still run sims 2 or is that a thing of the past? I'm positive she will find other games/uses for this laptop but I know she's not a diehard gamer looking for maxed out graphics in current and upcoming games. Also, REALLY do not wanna spend more the like 800.

    Any information helps,

    Laptop for University

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Sub $1000, but I'd consider options slightly above that margin. Will be buying Canada.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, battery life, build quality, form factor. (The last 2 seem to be on the same level for me)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Quite important, as I am looking for a portable, lighter laptop that will move around with me easily along with its charger. I find clunky laptops to be annoying, as they just aren't portable due to their weight. However, I am clumsy so something super-duper light may not be ideal - I think under/at 4 pounds for BOTH laptop and charger would work great. I say both because it's very likely I'll be spending hours on campus so I'd like to have my charger with me in case my battery dies.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
A 13" - 14" screen is ideal. I feel that 15" gets large, thus making it clunky while the sub 13" ones get a tiny screen.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
As of right now, I don't think so, but I don't mind having a little leeway in that area just in case I do need to do any of those things. I definitely won't be going hardcore, so I think a laptop that can handle those activities to some extent (even if it's minimal ) would be better.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd definitely like a good keyboard and touchpad that don't feel cramped up and feel good to type/swipe on. Reliable build quality is also important to me as I mentioned, I am clumsy. Great battery life and storage are also important, however, I do use OneDrive and Google Drive for storage so I don't need a crazy amount of it. I'd also like a good amount of USB/HDMI ports along with headphone jack. Some bonuses are definitely backlit keyboards, nice Bluetooth connection, and fingerprint recognition.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Thank you for the help in advance!
