Kids school laptop that they can also play games and record youtube gaming videos Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:39 PM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $800 - $900 Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Graphics decent enough to run games like fortnite, etc smoothly, durable, kids will use it for homework as well as gaming. How important is weight and thinness to you? 50/50. I don't want something that's 7 lbs, but I won't pay premium to get something super light either. Regular laptop size is good enough. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" to 16" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Basic video editing using windows movie maker, etc. Not priority. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft, but also would like to be able to run Fortnite as well as regular games on Steam at least on normal resolution smoothly. I am not familiar with fps requirements but I don't want it to be skippy or glitchy. Right now even Minecraft seems to run at low resolution on his laptop, especially when he is recording on OBS. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit Keyboard IPS screen Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. While this is mainly for homework, and remote learning, I also want kids to be able to play games without stressing the computer too much. We've been using Thinkpad X220 (hand me down) and overall it's a very nice laptop although screen is too small. It runs almost everything fine, except graphics. Graphics is horrible, but everything else works fine. He records his game plays on OBS with webcam on, and X220 struggles a lot, and resolution drops a lot, so ideally we would like to be able to play the game and record with camera at the same time, preferably at full resolution. We also like thinkpads because of the docking options to turn the laptop into full desktop-like set up with dual monitors. Costco has 2 i7 laptops on sale, one has MX250 4GB GPU, is this really good to run games? https://www.costco.com/.product.100511758.html?&EMID=B2C_2020_0829_StockUp $899 [link] [comments] |
[Estonia] Laptop for design work (budget 700-900EUR) Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:33 AM PDT Hello! I am looking for a laptop to do design work (Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD, Figma, maybe some After Effects but not necessary). Don't really game. maybe some occasional CSGO but also not necessary. I got suggested Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 which has a deal for 700 EUR atm. [link] [comments] |
Anything better than this laptop? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:42 AM PDT Hello, I'm planning to buy ASUS VivoBook X512 DA with Ryzen 3500U CPU for around 570 euros. Are there any better options in this price range? Help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Hi. Can any laptop's RAM get upgraded? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:12 AM PDT If I buy a laptop and hope to upgrade the ram what should I be wary of? [link] [comments] |
Laptops for school and light gaming Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:08 PM PDT I am a high school student with a 550 dollar budget and I need a laptop for school. I am hoping it can have at least 8gb of RAM so it can handle Rocket League and Minecraft. I don't really care about weight or screen size, but hopefully above 13". [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:22 AM PDT So, using a fairly old HP Pavilion Notebook that's now not charging, screens going, it's a good 5 years old. I'm a uni student doing economics so will hopefully be going into 'buisness' afterward and I really want to future-proof myself. I do some DJ mixing on the side so I need something with 8gb RAM at least, decent processor would help also. Got a decent budget but nothing silly, any ideas? I see so many conflicting reviews online I get lost. Cheers guys [link] [comments] |
Looking for a good high end laptop (PhD in astro physics). Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:13 AM PDT Hi! Thank you for your help. I'm going to start a PhD in astrophysics and I need a new laptop. My supervisor recommended me a MacBook Pro, which is a bit of a standard in the field, but I am inclined to use something more Open, with Linux in it. I also understand that MacBooks are overpriced, in the sense that you pay more for the brand than the specifications.
My interest to find an alternative to Apple is primarily because I always try to use open software (I believe in open and free science, and I also think it's better). Linux is pretty compatible with apple (unix-like) and a lot -a lot- of people in my field (physics and astrophysics) also use Linux. It feels a waste buying Mac and then putting Linux instead. BUT maybe the best option is really a MacBook, and I could just install Linux alongside MacOS, you tell me! I'm in Spain, Europe if it matters. Thanks you for your time! I know a bit about software but I'm totally ignorant when looking -and comparing- hardware. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:12 AM PDT I have two options, the e6440 and the e7450 (don't recommend others since the market here isn't very diverse). the e6440 comes at around 4.7 lbs which tbh is pretty clunky while the e7450 at 3.3 lbs but the e6440 has the presumably much faster 4300m cpu than the u series 5300u found in the e7450. Both are otherwise exactly the same to me, with great 1080p displays and decent upgradibility (ram and storage). I'll be using this laptop for web and android (android studio is notorious when it comes to perfomance) with linux mint as my main os and dual booting windows for softwares such as photoshop (which is what im mainly considered about, just some basic editing but alot of it - nothing professional stuff like drawing). This'll be my only machine since I don't intend on buying a desktop so portability is a significant factor which is why i'm considering on buying the lighter model. what would ya'll advise? £1200 Laptop for Gaming, Excel etc plus General Browsing & Streaming Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:53 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: £1200, might stretch another couple hundred if it is definitely worth it Are you open to refurbs/used? If its worth it, more than likely not though How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? No real preference, this is the first laptop I'll be buying so don't know what to look for etc. Nice looking screen would be ideal, battery life not too essential as will be plugged in 95% of the time. How important is weight and thinness to you? Nothing too heavy, although not a major issue. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" and above Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Basic Photoshop will be used. Games played will be nothing too taxing but would like the ability to if I wanted. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Football Manager will be the main game as well as things like Civ 6, CS GO etc. Nothing too demanding but wouldn't mind having the option to play more intense games if I wanted/needed. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need someone to steer me down the right path here, I've been looking at a bunch of Ryzen laptops such as the Ideapad 5 15" but was never in stock, so I switched to looking at something with a much better GPU in it like the Lenovo Legion 5 and the HP Omen but they are both out of stock as well. They had Ryzen 7 4800u IIRC and seemed good value. I've also heard a lot of people mention that the Ryzen 5 is better than even the new Intel I7s so I have been almost exclusively looking out for Ryzen laptops. I don't mind waiting too long for a good laptop that people would recommend really. The photoshop work I'll be doing will be extremely basic so don't put to much emphasise on that either. This is mainly for playing games while on the sofa as since I've moved house the PC has been moved upstairs now. Massive thanks for taking the time to look at this for me guys, I will answer any more questions you might have. [link] [comments] |
Computer Science - Macbook Pro vs Thinkpad Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:27 AM PDT Hey everyone! I'm kind of struggling to make a decision on buying a laptop for going back to college (especially with the state of the world right now, can't say it's helping!) I've pretty much narrowed my choices down to a Macbook Pro 13 base model (i5 10th gen, 8gb RAM, 256gb SSD) or a Thinkpad X1 Carbon. I got the new iPhone SE (sick) recently so I'm feeling the pull of the Apple ecosystem, however - upgrading the Macbook Pro 13 in any way makes the price unwarrantable in my opinion. All in, the base model and Applecare here in Ireland is about ~€1500, which is similarly priced to other premium devices and definitely bearable. However, I'm just worried that 8gb RAM isn't enough as many people online warn. The "4 port" Macbook Pro costs just over €2100 (with Applecare) here, which is honestly just pretty ridiculous. The other laptop I'm considering, the X1 Carbon, is for obvious reasons. As much as I unconditionally love the design of Apple laptops, the slimness of the Carbon and it's industrial finish (especially with a dbrand skin - mmmm) is pretty undeniably attractive. If I were to get the Carbon, I would end up getting a pretty high spec model since the price would be justified, unlike with the Mac. I'm not looking for crazy performance, but just concerned that I'd crash and burn with the Macbook's 8gb RAM while studying computer science. If I would, I think I'd settle for a spec'd out Thinkpad Carbon :) Also considering other Thinkpads like the X13, but want something extremely light - the closest to a Mac I could get really My college does say that 8gb RAM is the minimum recommended, and I do have a number of classmates with 8gb RAM, but I just don't want to be bottlenecked hard. Performance isn't a huge deal to me but if 8gb is near unusable as many have alluded to, I won't bother with the Mac Another thing pushing me towards Windows is the uncertainty of Macs with regards to ARM. I don't want to buy a Mac for the sake of it, just to have support dropped and to be left with an underpowered mac in comparison to new ARM based machines. Thanks for any advice! [link] [comments] |
future engineering student looking for a laptop! Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:41 PM PDT 1, 500NZD in New Zealand Nope Performance, build, battery and finally form Quite important as I will be taking this to class. N/A Yes I will be doing CAD. Autodesk inventor and the likes. N/A Good keyboard I am a high school student who is looking to do my bachelors in engineering next year. I am looking around for laptops for next year, and I wanted your opinions on gaming laptops. I looked into gaming laptops primarily for its GPU, this is due to the fact that engineering students do CAD work. I have also heard of horror stories of potential thermal problems, weight and battery life issues. Have any of ya'll had any problems/regrets due to a gaming laptop? [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Software-Engineering and dual-boot with Linux Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:19 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm currently looking for a Laptop with Ryzen 4800u (would go with 4700 or something if the price range doesn't fit) 500gb - 1TB of nvme drive and 16gb of ram. No GPU needed. Build quality should be at least good enough as I know I won't get a top of the line product. Budget is 600-900€ I'd love to go for something with weaker cpu or even Intel if it has a ok-ish touchscreen for notes at uni but kind of scrapped that cause of subpar Linux support in that regard, but I can live with dual-booting so that should be ok. Could you point me to something? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

[France] Laptop for an engineering student, 1100€ maximum Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:57 AM PDT Hello! My brother need a laptop this year. His school advises a laptop with a ryzen 4xxx, more than 8GB of RAM, at least 256GB of SSD and no discrete GPU. He also would like a screen smaller than 15 inches, and avoid HP. Can you help me to find one that suits all his needs? 1100€ is the maximum, with an absolute maximum of 1200€ (please avoid this). Thank you very much! Helpful form: Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1100€, at the very maximum 1200, in France Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? It needs to be strong enough to stay for at least 3 years How important is weight and thinness to you? Nothing important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches maximum Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I think some solidworks, but I don't know; no gaming planned If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't think either Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I think I said everything! [link] [comments] |

As NVIDIA promised finally an RTX 2060 for under a 1000$ Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:14 AM PDT It's not it's usual Price but the 2020 Acer Predator Helios 300 with a FULL RTX 2060, a 10th gen I7-10750H 6 core 12 thread CPU, 16GB of ram in Dual-Channel, 512GB NVMe SSD, WiFi 6, RGB Keyboard and 15.6" 144Hz screen is now under 1000$ . right now there is also the Acer Nitro 5 but this one has a 9th gen CPU and half the storage space . For gaming this will be a better choice than most AMD laptop's in the market right now as the highest GPU you can find in them is a GTX 1660Ti except a very few options with an RTX 2060 like the Eluktronics Matrix RP-15 or the CyberpowerPC Tracer IV R Slim but sadly they both cost much higher and I think we will have to wait for the next year to start seeing a higher end GPU in an AMD laptop . Looking for Uni Laptop advice please. Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:55 AM PDT So I'm heading to uni and I need a quality portable laptop that I can use as my daily driver. I'm a mechatronics and Robotics student so I do lots of heavy programming, use CAD software etc so a good CPU and GPU are a must. I've been looking at Razer Blade 15 2020 base model or the XPS 15 2020 as my primary options but if anyone has a better suggestion or any other advice thank you very much. Price isn't to much of an issue though under £2000 is probably best. Cheers [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:45 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1000 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? Probably not, but if the deal is absolutely insane I'm open to it How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 2-in-1 would be nice, but it's not the most important factor. I love the specs on the Ryzen 4500U Lenovo Flex 5, but I really care more about a better screen at this point. I've got a very good desktop, so this is mostly for working while traveling, so it would be nice for the machine to function as a media consumption device. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, but I would like it to look like a normal laptop. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.6, but I am open to anything from 13-17. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't plan on it. Very slim possibility I will play some dota on it, but that's not really a big deal to me. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. I guess better game performance is better, but again, the display is what I'm after here. I don't see a need for a discrete gpu but I wouldn't be bothered by having one. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ideally, I would really love for the laptop to either have 16 gb of RAM, or to be expandable. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Again, screen is most important to me here, but a tablet isn't feasible for my use cases. Thank you for the help! [link] [comments] |

Do I need a dedicated graphics card for my needs or will it do more bad than good (heating up battery drain)? HELP :( LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:04 AM PDT Hi there, I've been told I'd ideally need the following specs for my next laptop, and after reading the fake screen resolution admin note I'm a little concerned because graphics will be important. I'll need a laptop with the following: -i8. -16-32GB Ram. -Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or RTX 2070 with at least 4GB graphics. -It needs to be able to support 4K on an additional display. Is this something most laptops have? Where do I start? Any brands I should look at or avoid? Grateful for any input, I'm 100% unversed on this matter. Thanks so very much! [link] [comments] |
