Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:05 PM PDT (But I have an unsolved question about network file moving, see below.) After decades of home/office networking in which I map drives across many computers on my LAN, I decided to finally tackle this bugaboo. The setup:
The problem that is decades old at this point is that this has extreme performance penalties for the typical LAN client. The clients are often low-end desktops with limited memory and CPU capabilities, not to mention graphics are minimal. Their connectivity may be 1 Gbps on the wire, or perhaps they connect with around 100 Mbps either on a wireless connection or they are really, really old clients with old Ethernet cards. Clients see this: Upon entering a typical directory containing 100 graphic images from a digital camera, they observe an extremely slow crawl of thumbnails as each file is apparently read by Windows Explorer
This nightmare is somewhere between a time waster and a toxic work environment in which a small/home businesses might have to pay people to watch thumbnails show up, barring a better system. Windows should just work. Our use case is simple. I need client PC operators to sort photos. They are 5 MB or larger. The videos are often 40+ MB. They need to move 7, 23, 53 or whatever pictures from one huge massive folder to the appropriate categorized folder. They have to see at least a thumbnail of each photo to see how to categorize it. Well, after a few more complaints about this issue recently around the home, I finally found a solution to the speed issue. It's actually a published solution by Microsoft, but they hedge everything with their typical overcautious attitudes about modifying any setting they don't want the "little people" to have. They literally say, "The settings are not optimal or appropriate on all computers." Ok, M$, thanks for your support. The settings I copy verbatim here are those that they deny will really work for most PCs. They are also the settings that they claim are useful "particularly over some high-latency networks." But I am using these over a LAN with no latency issues to workaround/fix M$'s poor networking defaults for file sharing. If anyone from Redmond ever reads this, please explain how these settings shouldn't be mainstream, especially since the modern computer has plenty of CPU and memory capacity to allow for these settings, even on my use case of 6,8,10,12-year-old PCs running Windows 10. Here is my solution. It's left as an exercise to the student to understand how to run a powershell script. There are tutorials around. You need administrator access to do this. And if you are more familiar with regedit scripts, one of those could be created to import into a registry, also. According to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/performance-tuning/role/file-server/ under "Client Tuning Example," you will see that 5 different Registry tweaks are The media images/pictures are even cached to such an extent that folder traversal can be accomplished in series and the system will remember the ones seen a few moments ago. Your Windows 7/8/10 client computers will not longer be senile: they will have memories sharpened by a huge and successful thumbnail cache that is fast and not slow. Save this file as "Thumbnail-Fix.ps1" and try it out. Do it on each client that maps network drives or shares. I am not sure what exactly does the actual fix, but here are the 6 registry entries we hack to improve thumbnail performance:
None of the above registry keys are found on a stock Windows client. If they are there, the above fix script may not work because it is trying to create them. This how-to uses the M$ source shown above for Windows Server 2016, and also by consulting these resources: https://wilkyit.com/2017/05/08/citrix-xendesktop-and-windows-10-optimisation-script-2/ (see SMB tuning) Note also that this link https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2168064-why-is-windows-10-very-slow-to-open-network-files says that you might need to force turn-on NetBIOS, an odd fix, as NetBIOS should be on for essentially everyone (it's usually auto-enabled), even in 2020 as I write this. There is a TechRadar article from 2011 that had some clues. And the script I got is courtesy a comment at https://superuser.com/questions/1154051/using-reg-add-in-powershell-to-add-registry-key-with-double-quotes My Google search of "slow windows mapped drive file moving onto the same drive" is still not answered, but it's where I began. I'd like to know if anyone knows how to rapidly move a file from a subfolder of networked/mapped X: drive to another folder on the same mapped drive. Move

This is instant on the local machine. It takes a while on the client PC. Is there a way to make SMB do the hard work on the server PC, or is this only available with a server OS? [link] [comments] |
How can I secure a hosted server on my home network? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:42 PM PDT I have a few spare computers in my home network that I'm using to host servers and etc, is there anyway I can secure it at least a tiny bit more? I have a SonicWall firewall from around 2008 that has DMZ on it, I'm currently not using any kind of tunneling software or stuff related to that. [link] [comments] |
Optimizing wifi channels and bands Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:12 AM PDT I'm at the last stage of optimizing my network and just trying to get my head round the channels and widths stuff. Home networking layout: https://imgur.com/a/F8R7kFn I'm in rural area with no other peoples wifis but I have my router and Unifi AP both emitting wifi zones. I know about keeping them separate but wondering if its worth turning the widths from auto to one of the specific bands? From what I'm reading the higher the width band the faster the speeds but its more prone to interference but without any other conflicting wifis, im not so worried about this. With only two devices emitting the 2.4 and 5ghz bands, I reckon i can increase the widths and still avoid an overlap. However does the 80mhz band struggle through thick walls? Or does increasing the width band help range? Probably this part i'm getting confused with the most. Regarding the channels, I'm keen to keep within the DFS range for the AP zone because my TV is not liking my 5ghz channel so will be aiming for channel 60 next. With the main router on 36. however these may need changed if increasing the widths causes overlaps. I'm reading the odd forum that suggests the lower the channel, the better the range? Wouldnt mind having this confirmed? [link] [comments] |
PoE with Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:26 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm looking at buying a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter for my house, and I want to plug my Ubiquiti access point into it and power it via the PoE port. Is plugging a sufficiently powerful adapter into the EdgeRouter enough to power the PoE out port, or do I need to plug in a PoE feed into the PoE in port to facilitate that? [link] [comments] |
Suggestions for a low-cost wireless bridge Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:11 PM PDT I have a friend who is trying to set up some smart-home/home automation stuff at their apartment. The main issue is that their landlord provides a wireless router with no ethernet ports, and no option to purchase service from anyone else. In addition, there is some sort of black magic that prevents devices on the wireless network from seeing each other. This makes setting up any smart devices or home automation nearly impossible. We talked and it seems what he needs is a wireless bridge. I built one out of a raspberry pi and a USB wireless card, but the throughput is awful. Like 15Mbps awful. That, and I can see several other solutions online that cost significantly less than a raspberry pi and all the assorted extras that make it work. I'm looking at this solution in particular. However, before we make the purchase, there's a couple of requirements.
The TP-Link travel router looks promising, but I have no experience with this sort of hardware. I want something different than a traditional wireless extender or AP, as we are going to need to have a subnetwork where all the smart devices can see each other. Are there any software solutions I'm missing that would be able to turn tri-band router into such a device? Any help here is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:59 PM PDT So I just got out of boot camp and I'm now in tech school for a couple months for the military. I've brought my gaming PC down and found out the "high speed internet" option for $50 a month is maximum 10mbps..... is there other ways to get my own provider or router that doesnt require a coax outlet or phone jack since there is none in my dorms. PC can't discover new network at all. Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:26 PM PDT Hi, we recently got a new network, and a new modem and router. Every device (phones, tablets and computers) are working great, except for one PC. I've tried every guide and video I've found. It doesn't discover the network at all. It worked fine with the old network. I've tried restarting both the network and the PC, updating my PC drivers and various methods of manually connecting. Even when manually connected and added to known networks, the network doesn't show up in available networks for the PC and it remains unconnected. The Tether app shows the PC connected when manually connected but the PC isn't connected. I have a Motorola modem, and an Archer AX50. [link] [comments] |

How do I get the best out of the network closet in my apartment? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:10 PM PDT Hi! I'm very new to home networking and I'm unable to understand the network closet enough to make use of the r/HomeNetworking wiki or implement the basics of home networking. I'm therefore seeking the community's help to understand the networking setup. Any inputs are hugely appreciated!
I have been unable to identify the other devices in the closet or the network layout/hierarchy, and this is where I'd love to get some help.

FileZilla to FTO server: can only use 'plain FTP' encryption. Can't use any other 3 encryption. Why? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:59 PM PDT Hello, i am a complete noob setting up a home FTP server. I can access my FTP server from 4G network outside my home network BUT i have to use 'plain FTP' in FileZilla for connection. I am worried it will be an issue if i access from a MacDonalds network. What am i doing wrong here? Why can't i choose, say, 'explicit FTP over TLS' w/o error popping up? Really appreciate your assistance. Pls point me to the right respurce or anything...i cant find anything to help me understand what is going on. I am using D-link DNS 323, and Gigabyte ac plus router. Thankyou! [link] [comments] |
6 Desktop PC's on the same network configuration/setup tips? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:54 PM PDT So me and my friends plan on all going to the same house for this Gaming Raid/Launch. We all have Desktop PC's and plan to hook a It's a comcast router you get from Comcast, through ethernet to a Netgear 8 port switch in the basement than hook them up through 6 Cat 5e/6 cables to the desktop PCs. (We didn't buy cables yet) Our friend has about 400 Mbps download. Any Tips or preparation that we would have to do to prevent issues? I was reading that we would have to get a better router with good QOS policies to prevent issues but not really sure what I'm looking for with that. [link] [comments] |
Internet issue with piHole/router Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:48 PM PDT I have a Netgear Nighthawk X6 which is few years old that is having issue with internet issue. I have flashed it with DDWRT and has piHole(Installed in a raspberry pi 4b connected with lan) DNS setup. internet drops every few hours and only fixed if I restart the router. Not sure if it is pihole issue or the router issue. My AV receiver and few other iot devices are not getting connected to the WIFI with and without piHole DNS set. I was thinking about upgrading the router to a tplink Archer VR400 with built in VPN and set DNS to Adguard DNS instead of pihole. I live in a 1600sqft bi level townhouse with a lot of houses nearby so interference is high. Please suggest any router under $200 if my choice is not optimal. Current Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6 Internet speed: Gigabit.(Comcast) Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Port 80 and 443 open on ATT router and question about ports Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:40 PM PDT I am new to the computer networking world so bear with me please. Let me start with this, does a device need to have a port open to use a certain protocol, or does it need to be open if it plans to receive traffic using that protocol? For example, does port 443 need to be open on my computer for me to access a https website? Now, I connected my laptop to my phones hotspot and used nmap to port scan my router from the WAN side. It returned that Port 80 and port 443 were open. Is this a normal and secure setup? Why would those ports need to be open on the WAN side of my router? [link] [comments] |
ubiquiti Mesh System or Access Points for 2000sq foot home 9000 sq foot lot Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:34 PM PDT I'm planning on setting up a smarthome rental, its about 2000 sq foot. I have only setup apartments before obviously that were quite smaller. My question is which is best for a 2000sq foot home (single level, no basement) and a 9000sq foot lot. The whole lot doesn't have to be covered. I plan on having a wifi system for the pool system but besides cameras that would be the only thing that is outdoors. Has to reach the garage and cameras all around the parameter of the house. The hardware I've picked up are the ubiquiti systems is just a Long Range Access point and I have a POE router already, however should I just get additional access points as needed or think I should invest in one of their mesh systems? Ive never setup a mesh system before just access points so trying to go over my options. Ideally 802.11ac coverage [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to convert Arris Tg1672G62 into a wireless bridge? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:07 PM PDT I have my own Motorola MG7540 modem/router but I have my old Arris modem provided by Spectrum that I was hoping could be converted into a wireless bridge. I can see under the NAT I can switch this to "Bridged" mode but I'm not getting internet access. Is there something I need to do on my Motorola modem/router? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:01 PM PDT Hello, I am currently living in an apartment that provides internet/WiFi with the unit. I figured it was going to be pretty bad service going into it but everything else was worth it. Unfortunately, the situation is worse than I expected. Lots of dead zones, frequently dropping service and high ping. I am able to access the router (but not the online controls) and have a single Ethernet port in the unit. The router is located in the basement of the building but it is relatively new (Netgear Orbi). The landlord had provided meshing nodes (not attached to Ethernet) but they are unsurprisingly not helping much. I am looking for suggestions on the best way to speed things up, would adding a wired access point be the best option? [link] [comments] |
TP-Link Deco M9 Plus vs EAP225 Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:58 PM PDT I'm currently running an Edgerouter X with an old router as an access point. Now that our whole family will be working/learning from home this year, I'd like to upgrade my access point(s) to provide better coverage and reliability throughout the house. I want to make sure our Wifi network isn't the cause of frustration for my wife and kids. I have Ethernet jacks around the house, so I'm going to hardwire my access points. I've narrowed my my choices down to the Deco M9 Plus (which can be wired in AP mode) and the EAP225. The M9 is a set of three for $200 and the EAP225 is $60 a pop, so they are comparable in price. And while I'm confident in my ability to set up either system, I don't need all the configuration options of a prosumer system. Can anyone here comment on the range and reliability of the two systems? Thanks!! 🙏 Edit: I'd consider the EAP245 too if it improves signal strength or some other aspect. [link] [comments] |
Sites blocked even tho im using a public dns? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:38 PM PDT Okay so my country has block a lot of nsfw sites and since proxy slows the internet down.I used to use google's public dns, for the most part atleast.Been doing that for the past couple of years, but a couple of months back.It just stopped working.I tried other dns's but neither of them unblocked the sites.Infact some of the nsfw subreddits also seem to be blocked.Every thing else work but for some reason the nsfw sites or subreddits dont. There ARE however a few sites that would somehow bypass this and work. But the number keeps decreasing day by day.I was wondering if there was a way around it and to somehow fool my isp or something like that.Other than using a vpn ofcourse [link] [comments] |
What Does each IPV6 setting do? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:49 PM PDT I was checking out my Routers settings and found that IPV6 was disabled, but there were lots of different options for turning it on. Which one is best for the average user? I know that 4to6 Tunneling introduces high latency, but I am not able to find information on the other options. Here is a screenshot of my settings page. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
AT&T BGW210-700 Modem/Router as failover on a Linksys LRT224 Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:26 PM PDT Not a networking guy so I apologize for any misunderstanding on my part. What I am trying to do is use my new LRT224 Dual WAN router to take in my two internet connections (one from a cable company and the other from AT&T DSL) and have that one connection supply internet for my network. Below the LRT224 I have a WRT3200ACM wifi router that I want to serve as my main router. The cable company connection was plug and play. The AT&T one I am tearing my hair out over. The network path is both Cable connection and AT&T connection feed into WAN 1 & 2 of my LRT224. The only output on the LRT224 goes to my WRT3200ACM. I see an issue in the LRT portal as the Cable WAN connection has an external IP but the AT&T one shows up as 0.0.0.0. I have tried to set the AT&T Modem/Router (BGW210-700) to IP Passthrough mode and disable the DHCP on it. I then have tried setting the LRT224 connection settings as obtain the IP automatically (which didn't work) and setting it manually to the last IP information that connected through the AT&T modem. The issue is that it WILL connect and you can see the IP addresses initially on the LRT224. However, when you refresh the screen, it dumps to all zeros. So I think it's getting the external IP (as it's not a local IP assigned from the AT&T device) but for some reason it dumps it after just seconds. I've set my AT&T device to the IP of 192.168.3.1 and the LRT224 to 192.168.2.1. My WRT3200ACM then is 192.168.1.1. I would think these wouldn't conflict. I'm not even sure if the AT&T device is even used since I turn off the DHCP and set it to IP Passthrough. BTW, I did find this article and followed the advice for setting up the passthrough but I get the same result: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/b1x5l6/how_to_properly_configure_the_arris_bgw210_for/ [link] [comments] |

Weird IP address and internet issues Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:17 PM PDT I lost internet at my home on Saturday. I went to get groceries and when I came back, it wasn't working. I have a network, but no internet. My IP address is really bizarre. My computer is hooked up to my own router via Ethernet, which is hooked to my wall socket via Ethernet. I don't have a modem in my apartment, and I've been told that it is outside locked in the service box. My router's indicator lights show that it has a connection. When I plug my computer in directly to the wall socket/modem, it has the sam result. Network, but no internet. It also has an IP address that shouldn't be assigned. For some reason my computer's IP address is 10.0.1.8(preferred). This is definitely not an IP address within my network's range. When the ISP technician came out, he was able to get internet when he assigned it a static IP. But since the network is supposed to use DHCP, I can't keep it static. He said that the fix would be to get a new router and replace my NIC in my computer. Rather than believe that two different pieces of hardware developed a problem at the exact same time, which I doubt, I was wondering if any of you guys might have any ideas? UPDATE / RESOLVED: My ISP moved me from VLAN 310 to 311, and suddenly I had internet again. [link] [comments] |
Modem router connection question Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:01 PM PDT Currently I am in an apartment that does not support internet through a coax connection to my modem router (Netgear ac1900, C6300). But the IT company that services the apartment said that I just need to connect it to the Ethernet port and that should work. So I connected from the LAN port on the modem router to the Ethernet port on the wall and I got odd results: my roommate and I are getting internet from the router to our phones(iPhones), but when we connect to it with our laptops(Windows 10 PCs) and firestick, no internet. The WiFi signal works great, just no connection from there. I'm able to use the Netgear genie on my laptop, but I don't really know what I'm doing from there. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks Edit: I've tried resetting the router many times to no avail [link] [comments] |
