Getting wireless internet connection from one suburban home to another ~145 m away? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:49 PM PDT Hi there, been doing some research both on this sub and the internet in general but I'm quickly getting overwhelmed as while I'm good with tech I'm very new to wireless bridges, so I'm wondering if I could get some advice. My grandmother and my aunt live 145 meters away from me, and with covid and all this stay at home stuff they often come in my backyard to use my internet. I'm wondering if I could use a wireless bridge to connect them to my internet service, and if so, what type of connection would be suggested? Both homes have an old antenna tower I could use so there is only a single tree for obstruction*. I'm worried though about interference since this is an urban area. Thanks for any and all help! Product recommendations would be an incredible help as well, so far I have looked at ubiquiti, tp link and various Amazon knockoffs which I'm sure won't function too well. Edit*: Just went up to the roof and it looks like there is indeed the top of a single tree in the way [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:16 AM PDT When I enable my raspberry pi to connect to the VPN server on my router it gets a virtual address 10.8.0.2 and I can no longer access it locally on 192.168.0.x. How can I configure it to use 192.168.0.x regardless I am local or remote? Route info: and and [link] [comments] |
Any difference between 1 gigabit ethernet over twisted par fiber optic. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:02 PM PDT I have a co-worker claiming that 1 gigabit Ethernet will always be faster over fiber optic vs twister pair. Is there any truth to that? I assumed that given all other factors being equal it would be the same. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:14 PM PDT So I own a R710 with 48gb ram, 2x xeons sitting idle in my basement. I have the option to buy a Quadro P2000 for dirt cheap brand new (250$ cad, I also know and can confirm it is brand new). Wondering if I could rig the P2000 up in the R710, and use it as a remote work station PC, and if this is even a good idea, or if I should just throw it in my system with a 3700x and 5700xt and use it within that. Or if this is just a stupid idea overall. [link] [comments] |
Buyers Guide Matrix - Building the part list Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:26 AM PDT Based on the response from yesterday's post it looks like there's a good amount of interest in this. I'd imagine the matrix would end up living on the wiki for this subreddit, so the mods may need to turn on that feature. But I think the first thing we should to is compile an initial list of recommended devices, and from there we can get into the figuring out which device to recommend based on the situation (sq ft, budget,etc...). So here's how this will work. I'll have top level comments in the thread with the type of device. You guys will reply with what you feel is the best product for that category. We'll need the following information when you recommend a product.
If I leave out a type of product, let me know. There's the question of "staying in the ecosystem" of a particular vendor. I think when creating the buyers matrix, that would be something we'd take into account. For example, if more people recommend Vendor A over Vendor B for a standalone router, but everyone really really likes Vendor B's AP's, then the matrix may recommend pairing Vendor B's standalone router with their AP's if the cohesiveness of the vendor's ecosystem is a much better experience than mixing and matching. But again.... we'll get there. Quantifying technical ability
/u/NormanKnight brought up privacy concerns. I'm guessing this is based on whether or not a vendor pushes out security updates for their products? My opinion is we shouldn't even recommend products from vendors who don't do that, but I also don't see novice users upgrading their router to the latest firmware either... I'll let you guys figure out how we should handle that. [link] [comments] |
Upgrading my small apartment's wifi Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:12 PM PDT So I'm having frustrations with my current wi-fi setup. I live in Brooklyn in a small 1 bedroom apartment (900 sq. ft) in a 3-floor walkup with lots of neighbors and interference. Although it's a small space I'm still having issues with connectivity on one side of the apartment. Currently my setup is a 400mbps/20mpbs connection from Spectrum to my Synology RT2600ac. I have messed with channels. transmit power, etc.. and still on the further end of the apartment I am having issues where it's limited in its connection. I've been looking into other solutions, but haven't landed on a definite answer to what I'm looking for. I have looked into a Ubiquiti Unifi setup, but that seems a bit expensive (around $500 priced out), I have looked at the Amplifi Alien, but not sure that I necessarily need WiFi 6 since I only have one device that supports it. I've also looked into the Synology MR2200ac to possibly extend the range on my network. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a PoE powered switch I can put in an enclosure outside. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:38 PM PDT I have 5 cat5e lines coming out of the wall outside of my house that I need connected to my ONT inside. I originally planned on adding more cat5 to them in an enclosure and running the 5 lines in conduit to the crawlspace to ONT (The lines were ran through the walls before drywall was put up). Then I found out PoE powered switches exist and was wondering if this would be a viable route. So I'm looking for input on whether or not the PoE powered switch would work in my situation. If it would work, it would be nice since one of the lines is already in the same wall plate as the fiber. I'm guessing all I would need inside is a PoE injector? I've tried googling but I'm overwhelmed trying to find the right one. It would need to support gigabit speeds. 5 port will be perfect since one of the 5 would supply PoE. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:52 PM PDT When we bought our house, the cable guy had to put the cable modem in the attic, and there was a cat 5e run to the den for the router. We weren't getting the speeds we were paying for so I had them come out and move the modem and now I put a switch in the attic. If I connect directly to the modem, Im getting my 400m as advertised, if I connect the switch directly to the modem and connect my laptop, speed is great. If I go to the attic and connect the switch, Im getting 80m on the same speed test. Rather than put a punch block in the attic when whoever installed these cables was here (previous owners?), The cable installer spliced into the cable and put an RJ45 on a 1m cable they spliced into. I want to put a punch block in anyway because it looks like a crappy birds nest, but would they splice be causing it to drop down to 100m speeds? [link] [comments] |
Edgerouter X with UAP-AC-LITE dropping connection Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:37 PM PDT Hi all, I'm encountering a weird issue lately with my internet provider/ubiquity gear My wifi connection will drop and say no internet is available. But once I reset my modem and edgerouter x everything is fixed. It happens about once a day. This leads me to believe it's not my modem that's causing this but my ubiquity gear. I'm kinda stumped, any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Separate or common 2.4GHz WiFi for automation/cameras and devices? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:32 PM PDT I have many smart switches, smart bulbs, Wyze cams, Sonos speakers (6), and IoT devices (~20) all on 2.4GHz. I plan to install a Tp-Link EAP245 access point for better coverage as I'm moving in a bigger house (1700 sq. ft.) soon. Should I put all those smart IoT devices on the main router's 2.4GHz WiFi (RT-AC68U) using a separate SSID and have the rest of the devices (iPhones, iPad, Macbook, PC, Nvidia Shield...) on the 5GHz via the Access Point instead? Or should the access point (EAP245) manage all the WiFi (both 2.4 and 5GHz) and disable the main router's WiFi completely? Thanks for your advice! [link] [comments] |
Help with Asus RT-AC66U_B1 bandwidth is significantly throttled. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:05 PM PDT I have tried searching multiple forums and guides to help out with this one. So I applogize if i missed some amazing post that solved this. I have a RT-AC66U as well as a NetGear CM1000, My ISP is Comcast Xfinity and my current Plan is the 1000/40 Mbps plan I am connected via a CAT5e Eithernet cable directly. What is most frustrating is randomly for long periods of time my bandwidth is reduced to 33 Mbps tested via multiple sites and devices (both phone, tablet, and PC). I cant seem to figure out what is causing this. Sometimes after a router reboot I get the normal bandwidth again 850+. Usually less than 10 minuets later I am back down to 33. Things I have tried. Rebooting the router. Resetting back to factory defaults Updating the firmware downgrading the firmware Installing Merlin Cooling (Currently it has 4 fans keeping it below 50C) Disabling QOS Enabling NAT acceleration (auto with CTF) Aicloud is off Connected directly to the modem (I get the advertised speeds and no throttling) I am using CAT5e Ethernet and double checked (even tried a new cable) disabling the firewall (turned it back on after) disabling the Wireless radios Tested with multiple sites (Xfinity, fast.com, Ookla, etc) Pretty much the CPU load never gets above 18% when its in it's "Throttled" state and the ram is never more than 50% used. I am pretty sure I have tried most of the commonly suggested items. I know the AC66U is older but it has performed well and for months. But recently just decided to start bogging down. before i commit to buying a new router I just wanted to open it up to see if i missed anything. I appreciate your time helping. [link] [comments] |
Access point routers. Is there any point in buying an expensive router? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:11 PM PDT Still new to the networking game and trying to work out what to spend on an access point router. Is there any point in buying something like a Nighthawk X4S or Asus RT-AC88U just for an access point as I suspect I'm losing a lot of features that would only work if I was using these as the main router? The AP router for me, needs to have guest network capabilities and a very good WiFi range. Desirables would be: beam forming, mimo, QoS, a game boost mode, and work well with Ps4 (compatible NAT) and have Unpnp or easy to use port forwarding for Steam games. The latter should really be needs! Would most of these features be handled by the primary modem router? [link] [comments] |
Questions about my home network plan Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:05 PM PDT Hello everyone, after being bored in quarantine for many months I have decided that my file storage and network security isn't in the best place and I feel that I should upgrade. Because my experience in server software and configuration is very limited( I do enough of experience with pc hardware) I felt that I should get the answer to a few things before I actually make a move on any hardware/ software. Ill start by saying that I want to use the server for a Firewall, NAS setup, Plex Streaming, and possibly for a Minecraft server or Home security system. I also think it is important to mention that my ISP is Verizon. I also am not really focused on budget but all hardware and software aside from the components outside my case should cost upmost of like $600. Now that I got that out of the way here are my questions.
Thanks For all Your Help!! [link] [comments] |
Cheap modem and Router for medical school Posted: 02 Aug 2020 02:34 PM PDT I am looking for a modem and router for medical school to work with Comcast. Right now I'm looking at the TP-Link N450 and the Netgear CM500 as budget options. I'm only having one other roommate, so I don't have too worry about too many devices, but we are going to be using stuff like Netflix and Hulu as well as attending virtual classes. Ethernet port on cable modem and cable reduced to burnt, blackened mess Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:14 PM PDT Last week I bought a new cable modem, as my (Xfinity) internet connection has been completely unreliable but due to COVID19 they won't send a tech out unless I have no internet at all. Hoping it might just be a crappy modem, I bought a third party (Netgear) one that had good reviews. It seemed to be working well for the one or two days I used it, then I left for vacation. When I returned today, I found I no longer had internet - the wired ethernet connection that runs through the walls of my house up to my office (from the cable modem, which is downstairs in the basement where the cable enters the house) was no longer working. I went downstairs to investigate and found the ethernet port on the cable modem (which should be yellow) was now a blackened mess, as was the connector on the ethernet cable. The modem no longer seems to work at all; it was also very hot near where the burnt up ethernet port was. I swapped back to my old Xfinity-supplied cable modem / router and I can get (unreliable) wifi connectivity, but the wired ethernet of course no longer works since the cable (or at least the connector) is fried. What could have possibly caused this? I thought the ethernet cable would only carry very low power signals so how did it manage to burn to a crisp? [link] [comments] |
Need help with WiFi extender problem Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:59 PM PDT Today I bought a WiFi extender to boost my WiFi because the internet in one room was horrible. (It's a Linksys RE6300). And I set it up and tried using it and resetting it and everything I could but it wouldn't work. It just made the WiFi worse. So I just disconnected it. Now a couple hours later. Our main WiFi network has nearly no signal. Our WiFi hasn't been this bad until today when we started using this extender. What's the problem? How can I fix this? [link] [comments] |
Can I set up mesh system with coax wiring? Do we need MoCA adapter? Or is there a better option?? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:49 PM PDT After a few hours of research on mesh systems and home networking I'm still uncertain of what will work for us and what equipment we need. Currently have Fios service from Frontier. We only use internet. House is wired with coax, no Ethernet outlets. Current setup is Arris Router with MoCA Adapter. House is 2 stories with 2 home offices, 3700 sf. Router is located in downstairs home office with hardwired computer. Currently using a plugin Netgear extender in an outlet in upstairs office. It disconnects all the time and I've got to find another solution. Also have coverage issues on the far end of the downstairs from the router location. My goals:

Helping My Boss Set Up His Home Network, Any Advice Welcome! Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:49 PM PDT My boss came to me complaining that he pays for 250Mbps+ and is experiencing alot of lag. He currently has 8-14 devices connecting to his network. And devices such as the Xbox are unplayable, because of lag. After several questions, I figured out hes renting the xfinity modem and is paying for their signal extenders. I told him I would do some research and help get him set up with a proper modem/router combo. After plenty of research I've settled on: My only concern is compatibility, between the two, and their combined compatibility with xfinity. Also, this set up totals $235. Is that a fair price for a 3.1 modem and router both capable of supporting plenty of speed. I want to get him set up for potentially being able to support faster speeds in the future. Any tips or advice is appreciated.. [link] [comments] |
Wifi vs Ethernet into Router that connect wirelessly to modem. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:43 PM PDT Background: Moving to a different place soon and ethernet isn't an option. Since I game alot, an ultra stable connection is desired, so I want to do ethernet. But I don't think this qualifies as "ethernet". Question: Would a WIRED PC to Router and WIRELESS router to modem be faster/stable than Wifi pc to modem? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:03 PM PDT As the title suggests, my roommates and I are looking to upgrade our wireless network in our 3-floor, 3-bedroom townhome. We are currently using an Apple Airport Express as our base station with another Airport Express set up as an extender. As you can probably imagine, we've been having a lot of issues recently with reduced bandwidth to the point that games are practically unplayable and Netflix stops to buffer constantly (first world problems, I know). In our frustration, we've decided that we want to get the best available (within reason) and after doing a little searching I think I've narrowed it down to either the Eero Pro (with maybe 1 extender) or the Asus RT-AX88U. I guess I'm wondering if going with the mesh network is the move, even though the Eero Pro only supports Wifi5 - I should mention that only one of our phones (currently) supports Wifi6 and I am planning on building a pc soon that will support Wifi 6 as well. Also, my roommate talked about upgrading his Wifi card if we go the Asus AX route. Does anyone have experience with either/both of these products and would you guys recommend one over the other? Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Connect to VNC only through LAN/VPN Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:13 PM PDT Not stuck on any VNC option, but there doesn't seem to be much that works for android, linux, and windows. Currently have Anydesk installed and hoping for another layer of security. I do have OpenVPN on a Raspberry pi, with an edgerouter 4 and Windows Firewall right now. Would like to connect to LAN through OpenVPN, then connect to machine(s) with Anydesk (or other option). Should be a quick firewall or router setting to block WAN access? Or is this overkill with white list access, 2FA, 16 character random password already. I guess good things to think about before going live on a server build. [link] [comments] |
VPN 3x faster than ISP - could replacing the router (not modem) help? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:33 PM PDT We're currently using the ISP's modem/router/wireless AP combo, and are mostly connected through wifi. The ISP doesn't allow replacing their modem but we can put the unit in modem mode and replace the router and wireless ap. I consistently get speeds that are 3-4x faster when I'm connected to a VPN (using wifi). Some searching suggests it might be a routing issue on their end but I can't find much about it. Would getting a separate router even help in this case (other than allowing us to configure a VPN on the router level)? [link] [comments] |
NEED HELP!! Modem and wireless Router Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:29 PM PDT To many damn options out there. I have my internet through Suddenlink. I'm running 400mbps at moment but plan on upgrading to 1g. I want to buy my own modem and wireless router. I do gaming and Will hard wire my pc. Don't need anything special on wireless router, just want a decent one. Usually run iPad, Apple TV, wife PC, phones, and a few smart devices. What modem and router do you recommend? Like I said not trying to break the bank but want something quality. [link] [comments] |
Wi-Fi network not showing up, but roommate's is and works. possible need to reassign iP address?? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:13 PM PDT Hello kind strangers, I'm at my wit's end. My wi-fi isn't working and I have no idea what is going on. Please pardon my cluelessness with this stuff. Here's the deal: My roommates and I all used to be on the same network, but then after some drama they created a separate network for me and for them. The internet stopped working and neither of our networks would show up listed for wi-fi, but they fixed theirs and now their network shows up and their internet works fine. I have no idea how to get my network to show up or work again. They gave me some hints saying something about reassigning IP address and putting something into the command line, restarting a bunch of times, and entering the network IP manually? I'm not sure what any of that means, or how to acquire the IPv4 address, or how to do that without a wi-fi connection. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need help with my home networking Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:07 PM PDT Basically I am working, taking classes, and gaming from home. I just got a PC and it only uses ethernet and I'd like to use ethernet anyways to get the best download speeds. My office is secluded on the 2nd floor in my house. I have Verizon internet so the modem/ONT is in the basement. I have 2 Verizon routers connected through coax, 1 in the basement, 1 on the 2nd floor but the opposite side from my office. I then have a ethernet powerline adapter set, 1 plugged in to the 2nd floor router and the other plugged into my office to the computer. The issue with this is that I lose about 40% of my download speed this way. On top of that the wifi is shotty when connected to my phone from time to time. I have no option to wire through the wall bc my home is outdated and that would be time consuming and expensive. Is there any option you guys can think of where I could get better ethernet speeds in my office? I don't have any internet wan ports around the house so the only way to wire up a router would be with coax. [link] [comments] |
