    Who misses the Startup/Shutdown sounds?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:59 PM PDT

Every former version of Windows left it's legacy through its startup jingle. The startup/shutdown sounds gave each version of Windows its own personality. I know they slow down the startup, but not by much. Anyone else wish Windows 10 had its own unique jingle?

Help doing a factory reset for a novice

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Hi, all. I need some help trying to do a factory reset on my laptop. My laptop is probably 5 years old. It is only used for social media sites and occasional Googling. I know that it has a lot of memory but I don't really utilize that. It is a Dell Intel Core i5.

The past couple months my laptop has been super slow so I had just stopped using it so I am trying to do a factory reset on it but I can't even get to somewhere to do it and if anything is happening it is happening soooooooo slow.

I'm really at a loss of what to do and can't really afford to pay someone to do it.

This is what I have tried, from suggestions from google. *Holding down F8....nothing happens *Typing "cmd" in search bar near the start up then enter...nothing happens *Opening settings....the setting window opens but doesn't look to have loaded then it just disappears *opening settings from the pinned bar at the bottom....same as above

    Please help!

After updating to Windows 10 2004, My programs take a long time to open.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Hello all, I just recently upgraded my PC to Windows 10 2004 from the previous Windows 10 build.. I noticed instantly my programs take forever to launch after I click them. Most noticeably the web browsers, from the time I double click Chrome, it takes about 15 seconds to open... My pc is considered high end and was super fast before, any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you

Windows 8 vs 8.1 vs 10 for old Laptop (Atom Z2760, 2GB RAM)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 02:55 PM PDT

I need to revive an old laptop (Samsung Ativ 500t) for light usage (web browsing, email, occasional word processing).

Currently Windows 8 is installed (from when I was using the Laptop), and initially I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10. Having spent a few minutes going through other posts, there are diverging opinions that Windows 10 is more resource intensive than 8 or 8.1.

What would you recommend? Is there any balanced comparison on resource needs for these three Windows distributions, especially with old hardware and low RAM?

W10 doesn't recognise my SD Card.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I'm using a 128GB MicroSDXC card in an SD card adapter.

    This is my laptop: https://uk.dynabook.com/discontinued-products/portege-z30-a-1fd/

Checked Device Manager, no drivers seem to be missing.

Really need it to work as 128GB is not enough since I'm planning to play some older games and run virtual machines.

    Thanks.

Something similar to VideoPad (Trial) would be nice. Also, I'd like it to not be so CPU intensive.

Can a PC be used to decode dolby pro logic?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:13 PM PDT

I have a ton of 3.5mm speakers and a ton of 3.5mm ports on my PC. I also have a Wii that I want to set up surround sound with. I can plug the Wii audio into my PC with an RCA-3.5 adapter I have, but is there any program/mixer/decoder/software installable on Windows that can take a line-in audio signal and decode it if it's Dolby Pro Logic? And then send the different channels to different speakers connected to the PC?

Right now, I have the Wii plugged into my PC. In the realtek audio manager, I have it set to 7.1 surround sound. One set of speakers is the rear left and right, one set is front left and right, and one set is for the front center. Having a speaker pair set to front center audio makes only 1 of them emit sound for the center. This all works fine. Sound check works. All 5 speakers are independent and play the right channel via Windows audio. PC games work in surround now. But when I plug the Wii in, I have the Wii set to surround mode, but all I get is the same left/right signal out of all 3 pairs of speakers. So is there a program/mixer sound manager thing that can interpret the surround data from the Wii's L/R audio output and play it right? Otherwise I'd have to buy a dedicated sound system/receiver, and also a bunch more speakers or 3.5mm adapters if that sound system doesn't have a bunch of 3.5mm outputs.

WinSCP and new SSH key for transport and authentication?

WinSCP and new SSH key for transport and authentication?

    Hello,

I'm very new to WinSCP and configuring H-2-H keys. JP Morgan has updated their key on June 27 ( https://www.jpmorgan.com/tss/General/SSH_Support/1320572788114 ) and now our WinSCP client seems to be failing to connect to their server to retrieve the files.

It seems very straightforward but I was unable to find anything in the WinSCP documentation, on JPM's site, as well as their Connectivity Guide.

How can I update my WinSCP system so that it is compatible with the new JPM key? I've tried PuTTYgen but JPM advised that I would not need to create any new keys myself. Furthermore, JPM didn't offer any help as WinSCP is a 3rd party tool... Not sure where to go from here and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Audio driver output missing?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:50 PM PDT

    Audio driver output missing?

I can play audio off of Chrome and all my DAWs (music making software) perfectly fine, but playing audio/video files off my desktop or hard drive is where I run into issues. No error messages either, just audio files that stay at 0:00 when opened and videos that play on mute.

I looked at my Device Manager and noticed no output under the audio category? How would I be able to install that again?

    https://preview.redd.it/9tjjwpgslw751.png?width=309&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f57fec29ffbe512d9154af556d0421f6021ae3c

There is a Realtek Audio under the other Sound category though.

Overall very strange that I can play audio everywhere except natively on my device. I have a Dell XPS 13 9365 if that helps. Any way to reinstall the driver? Or any remedies to my issue are welcome. Thank you!

After 2004 update, I can no longer access my NAS

I have tried everything in this guide here https://www.thewindowsclub.com/cant-access-shared-folder-because-of-organizations-security-policies/ to no avail. I'm not sure what to do, but it seems like I may have to revert back to the old update. This was working before the 2004 update as well. Thanks.

Need a screen recorder to make small video clips.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 11:02 AM PDT

Hey guys, as the title suggested I want a screen recorder who can record around 5 minutes of videos. I used some softwares but the problem is subtitles get left out. For example, I want a 5 minute clip of an anime. The clip comes without subtitle.

I currently use Flashback Express recorder but the video feels weird, like it's not smooth after I record.

Any way to permanently disable windows defender on the home version?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Windows defender, as every other AV I've tried, sucks up my systems resources constantly while gaming and downloading. It can take up to 100% CPU and most of my disk usage while idle sometimes. I wish to PERMANENTLY disable it.

First off, don't scald me for making my computer less secure. I've had other computers with no AV before and had no issues. I know what the hell I'm doing when it comes to browsing the internet safely, so please don't try to school me on why disabling my AV is a bad idea. I don't care about your opinion. I want to disable my antivirus.

So, without any judgemental comments insulting my intelligence or suggesting I do something else that has nothing to do with what I'm asking (because I've seen that on all of the other posts asking the same thing),

how do I permanently remove windows defender on my computer so it can stop slowing everything down?

Edit: Thank you @Thotaz for the answer!
