Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

What kind of desktop speaker to buy?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:03 AM PDT

    Hey!

I hope you can help with my problem. So I would like to buy a new PC speaker mainly for gaming and a little bit of movies. It would be in a larger room and about 1-2 meters away from me. I don't really have any experience with quality speakers, but these 3 looks good to me, maybe I am wrong. Or if you could suggest anything.

Which one would you choose? Anyone have any experience with these 3?

    1. https://www.edifier.com/int/en/speakers/r1600-t3-2.0-powered-bookshelf

    3. https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-audio/g560-rgb-gaming-speakers.980-001300.html

    4. Thank you!

Did anyone else overestimate how many Triple-A titles they were going to play when they built their PC?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:59 PM PDT

I built a new PC last summer so that I could both upgrade and give my little brother an awesome birthday present in the form of my previous rig (i5-6500 & 1060 6GB). I really wanted to bump from 1080p and shaky 144 fps to 1440p consistent 144 fps; while selecting parts I think I really focused too much on the times that I wanted to play triple A games and my PC struggled. I ended up splurging on a top of the line system with a 2080 Ti alongside a 9700k. I don't really regret the purchase because I had really low expenses at the time so I could afford it, but looking back at the last year of gaming on this machine is a bit painful when I consider what a high percentage of my time has been spent in World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, CS:GO, and gamecube emulators for Smash Bros. I definitely achieved my goal of having top of the line performance on the occasions I play a triple A game and in VR, but man did I overbuild relative to most of my time I spend on my PC.

Do most of you running crazy "it's not much but it's mine" builds play demanding games a majority of the time or is mine a common experience? Those of you who are aware that you mostly play easy to run titles do you still feel a desire to upgrade your rig or are you happy with yours since it runs the games that are important to you well enough?

First Build I've ever done 100% on my own!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT

I built a computer with my Uncle back about 20 years ago (Windows XP just came out) and have been using laptops ever since then. I finally said "let's do this" and started putting my list together, saving up the $$, and re-tooling my budget about 100x.

I present to you all, for your judgment and enjoyment, my first ever gaming build. It's a dual-boot with Windows on the SSD and Ubuntu 20.04 on one of the HDDs. I am a voice actor and use it for both gaming and sound editing/mixing.

    Pic is here

Does 120hz and 144hz have a noticeable difference?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:46 AM PDT

I bought a 144hz monitor, and for some reason the highest available option is 120hz, I wanted to know whether it's worth investigating what's wrong

    Customizing a New Gaming PC

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:17 AM PDT

    Hello everyone;

I'm considering shelling out some bucks for a new rig. RGBs, water-cooling reservoir, all that stuff. But I keep running into a few things aesthetically that seem especially difficult to find reliable sources or information for. I have an average or slightly above average level of understanding of computers when it comes to selecting parts - this will be my 3rd gaming PC / 2nd build.

My current computer was bought three years ago from Best Buy in a rush to return to PC before a game's release. It's held up so far, but I'm planning to re-sell it for a fair price to absorb some of the cost of the new rig. I can play everything current on maximum settings, no real problem (runs a bit warm even after cleaning but I'm always cold anyway).

This 3rd one though, I really want to go all-out in customizing, and hope to have completed before the release of Cyberpunk 2077. Here are some of my questions:

    • I'm sure "money" isn't the beast measure of performance, so what graphics card would I need to get the absolute most out of Cyberpunk 2077 without excessive spending?
      • It seems with most custom rigs it's pretty consistent that a graphics card is almost half the complete rig cost (barring premium peripherals), but I don't want to 'waste' money on a ridiculously over-the-top card meant for things I'll never realistically do, like render the next Pixar title or mining cryptocurrency.
      • The game supposedly takes advantage of Ray-Tracing, which I feel like I don't fully understand beyond "more advanced lighting effects." Is it possible to accidentally purchase a "ray tracing / RTX" card that can't play or doesn't get the most out of Cyberpunk 2077?
    • I do want to play in 4k, so I'm also interested in suggestions for the best gaming monitor(s) for this. While I really enjoy triple monitors, I've also been looking into ultra-wides with customize-able input layouts. It seems like a huge potential for buyer's remorse with an Ultrawide, but a waste of outlets / power to be using triples.

Update 1: So I did a bit more research and realized: I definitely did not understand 4k. Like at all. Chucking roughly $1,000 at a monitor and EACH 2080, I would already reach or exceed my 'hard ceiling'. While willing to dump $5,000 the only benefit would be that the rest of my rig might only cost another $1,000-ish - So let's say FOR NOW 4k isn't a requirement. I'll definitely be waiting until about a week (or two) before release to finalize on a GPU, to see if 2x2080 or the 3000 series are more comfortable / proficient. But I will do what I can to make it happen.

    • Are curved monitors just gimmicky in gaming unless ultrawide? (And what games even support it?) or would triple-monitors be better for cockpits & dashboards?

Update 2: I've decided to go with triple-monitors (one ultrawide) per /u/mcchickenmcnugg's suggestion. After some digging the Super Ultrawides are way too costly and I feel in the end I'd have less issues and more versatility with a 3-monitor config, which also allows me to upgrade each at my own pace.

    • I intend to stream at 1080p which my current GeForce 1080 can probably manage, but it's three years old and currently goin for $350~$400. Would doubling on my current card be less effective than just buying a second one?
    • Can I play in 4k while streaming 1080 without stream quality issues? I currently have an external Elgato HD60s and was considering the internal card, but I'm not particularly fond of their software. Any better recommendations? (might be fore a different sub to answer this, idk)
    • I appreciate the aesthetic of water-cooling units, but hard or fixed tubing seems almost exclusive to wholly customized builds (making their own tubing) and I haven't been able to find a kit under $500 that isn't floppy hoses. I'm not sure how to address this.

Update 3: This is entirely for aesthetics. The reason I'm set on water-cooling is that I enjoy the silence immensely. If fans too many fans are running too high I always become very distracted by them. Any clear soft-tubing tricks to make them more angular than loopy without compromising them?

    • What would be the best type(s) of paints to apply to components? And would I be using different types of paint for different parts? In case colors matter due to brand or materials or something, I'll be looking for a lot of bright/neon yellow and black as primaries with perhaps some some neon red and minimal teal / sky blue accents to match the typical Cyberpunk 2077 theme (at least right now - I might be looking at other colors depending on later inspiration once finally getting around to it). Also creating custom stencils which I can imagine being done by hand with borrowed tools.

My hard ceiling would have to be $5,000 if I'm feeling reckless. The last time I filled an online cart with parts I found myself becoming more discerning as I passed $2,500 - if only because I don't feel like putting in overtime at a job I dislike to make it more comfortable, but accepting that I might end up closer to $3,500 before fancy peripherals. I'm a strong believe in "you get what you pay for" but there are also some things I know I can do myself and am willing to try, try again. Like engraving my own glowy plate or setting up a logo animation on a Raspberry Pi LCD.

That's all I can think of for the moment. There was some custom site I visited a while back that had a whole lot of options I'd never heard of and didn't understand with an even more ridiculous price-tag. Would just be nice to know wtf they're talking about and whether or not they actually make any perceptible difference for gaming, but I can't find it. Probably for the best.

I'm also interested in other visual modification not as specific to components themselves (though again I sincerely appreciate the info and recommendations). Thanks for any help!

    ---

Addendum: I don't really mind that cost for a single game. There will of course be other games I play, however, with mods for Skyrim I played that game almost exclusively for several years. I imagine Cyberpunk will be very much the same in terms of replay value, and building specs around a game I know I'll invest a serious chunk of time into - I really don't see why not. My first computer was built on a $1,000 budget with FFXIV (1.0) recommended requirements in mind, and held up for 5+ years playing everything max. I'm somewhat expecting this to do the same but without overzealous future-proofing.

Edited for updates: I'd like to thank everyone for their input so far!

What hdd should i get for my pc that only has a 1 tb ssd?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:57 PM PDT

Strictly gaming, and youtube and reddit. I plan on using this pc for a long time ive had it 2 months now. Long term probably gonna use strictly this instead of my xbox. I was looking at an 8tb but that seems like pure overkill right now.

    Just built my first PC!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:18 PM PDT

Hey guys! Just built my first PC... sorta. I put everything together plugged in all the wires needed (I believe) and it won't turn on. Here is a list of my components:

    CPU Ryzen 5 3600 $167
MOBO msi Tomahawk B450 Max ATX AM4 $119
    RAM G.Skill Ripjaw V Series 16GB (2x8) $65
    SSD Western Digital SN750 1TB $135
GPU GeForce RTX 2060 Super $399
    PSU Corsair Rm Series RM750 750W $135
    Total: ~$1,250

I'm not sure how helpful including the components are, but the more details the better.

So, onto my problem (PC not turning on). Every single wire I have plugged in are the:

20/24 pin (both into PSU and MOBO)
CPU 4+4 pin (both into CPU slot on MOBO and PSU)
Front panel connectors (all into mobo. Followed the mobo manual)

PCIe (into GPU and PSU, I have some extra PCIe that isn't needed dangling off the GPU)

I also tested the power supply by putting a paper clip into pins 3 & 4 and connecting it to an RGB fan that I have and it does indeed work. That's my spiel! I've been trying for hours to figure it out so anything helps at this point. Thanks! :)

Long Post , Alot Of Things went wrong with my build. I have some questions :(

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:16 PM PDT

    1. Trying to install amd GPU drivers again after I reset windows. I download it but windows says it will harm my device and it won't let me install it. Why?

    2. 240hz monitor saying I'm at 1hz but I'm at 64hz, which is the only one available when it should be 240hz. Also there are only 4 different resolutions to choose from. Also since this happened there is no option to put my PC into rest mode. This all started happening after using amd driver Cleanup and exiting safe mode.

    3. When I play graphically intense games, my PC goes black and it restarts. I get an error called "kernel power" in windows event log when it happens.

    4. Monitor is only saying generic PNP monitor (not sure if it's an issue)

    • Specs:

    • Ryzen 5 3600

    • RX 5700 XT

    • 550W Gold Corsair PSU 80+

    • 16GB RAM 3200mhz

    • B450 Aorus M

    • pls respond, I am very worried about this :(

    Help with build

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:08 PM PDT

Hi, I'm building a PC for the first time and would like to get your thoughts on it. Aiming for a budget around $1300 CAD, is there anything I can upgrade or downgrade in the parts I've picked out? I'm willing to change it to an Intel build if it makes optimizing easier.

Build will be used for games like LOL, Apex, Overwatch and R6 mostly, along with coding and general media consumption.

I'm not very sure on the motherboard and power supply the most. I prefer to also order parts from either Canada Computers or Amazon.

will be buying parts starting august. help me foolproof my 1st build. also, not able to find a "good" case, i think.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:29 PM PDT

i want a full tower. with nice air flow. and dust filters. is it just me or there isnt much choice?

i do a lot of "3d modeling" with fusion 360. but the PC is mostly to be able to play Cyberpunk2077 (and starcitizen, when it finally comes out).

    i'd love 1440p/144hz.

water cooling AIO cause i need something efficient at cooling and quiet, since my GF now works from home (caused by pandemic). and she has video meetings, her desk is just behind me.

i tried to keep the build simple.. didnt really try to match colors. altho it would be nice if it did match. black/red is probably what i'd go for if i had any knowledge of the proper parts to get.

dont hesitate with questions. i will update as i see them!

    thanks for your precious time

    EDIT1: canadian money*

EDIT2: should i worry about this --> **Note:**Fractal Design Define 7 XL Dark ATX Full Tower Case has a front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port that can connect to the MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard USB 3.2 Gen 1 header. A separate USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter will be required.

    BSODs do not go away

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:13 PM PDT

I tried enabling XMP on my system to get the best out of my 3700x. I had a 3600mhz cl18 kit from corsair. Ever since I tried that my pc has been constantly crashing. I have reset all clocks, reset the UEFI and CMOS, updated my BIOS, drivers, etc, and reinstalled/reset windows. None of that worked. I get BSODs ranging from Memory Management to IRQLs and to Kernels and Service exceptions. I ran memory tests and they all came back fine, so I thought the ram wasn't the issue. I later ran another test and got 1 error, so I decided to order a lower timed kit to see if my current ram was too powerful. This did not work either and I am now upset and confused as to why my computer doesn't stay on. I can boot into windows and open a few programs, but after a while, my pc will crash with no apparent reason to why. There is nothing I can do that can trigger it. I just reset windows (kept personal files) and it crashed again. Please help.

    My main system specs:
    Ryzen 3700x
    Asrock X570m Pro4
    Nvidia 2080 Super
Corsair Vengence RGB pro 3200mhz cl16 2x8 (currently installed)
Corsair Vengence RGB pro 3600mhz cl18 2x8 (previously installed)

Is there a tangible difference between G.Skill and Corsair RAM?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:05 PM PDT

I'm looking at upgrading my current ram to a high speed and lower CL. I'm stuck between the G.Skill Trident Z RGB and Corsair Vengeance RBG. Both are DDR4 3200mhz and CL14, but Corsair is over $100 more expensive.

Is there a tangible reason for such a huge price discrepancy?

Edit: Model number for the G.Skill is F4-3200C14D-16GTZR

And model number for Corsair is CMW16GX4M2C3200C14

G.Skill is $190.99 pre tax and Corsair is $307.99 pre tax. Prices in CAD.

    Gaming 1900$ Opportunity

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:14 PM PDT

I have an opportunity to buy a PC from the US which is significantly cheaper than in my country (~30% cheaper) my budget is : ~1900$ for gaming only

My friend is visiting California in a few weeks and is willing to bring me the parts

I'm aware I will not have warranty but it doesn't really matter since it's barely respected here by retailers anyways, also customs tax doesn't apply for computer components so I'm not worried about that

The thing is I'm having a hard time to decide about OCing, the way I see it is invest now to future proof or save and upgrade sooner down the road, right?

    Concerns I have

    • Would it be safer to carry the components separately in their packaging or as a complete assembled PC, the plan is to carry it in a trolly luggage either way
    • Could the PSU be an issue considering electric infrastructure differences? (230v 50hz here)

The build I came up with is

Best upgrade for my CPU cooler?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:53 PM PDT

So I want to upgrade my cooler for CPU. I probably don't really need an upgrade but I want to be able to play more intensive games now that I'm gaming a little more.

    My build here

I know there are a lot of good air-coolers that are just as good as their liquid counterparts in the same price range and I am open to a better air-cooler but I also want something quiet. Any recommendations?

Here is the parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/W2mgXL

Went RGB for fun because I knew my kids would be into it. We are already having great fun playing the Raytracing Beta of Minecraft.

    Feedback appreciated!

My NR400 case + B450M ProVDHMAX issue with fan connectors

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:39 PM PDT

So I have 2 fans in the case and it seems like they go through an adapter into 2x 2 pins. I have no idea how I plug those into the motherboard or if there's an adapter I can use? Can anyone help?
