Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:13 AM PDT Hello again. I'm attempting to install linux onto my hp Pavillion 14' but it doesn't matter what distro i try, the audio sounds muffled compared to the audio on Windows. The speakers are B&O speakers so idk if theres any drivers out there for linux. Any help would be appreciated as i wish to move to Linux, but the audio quality is the only thing holding me back. Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:28 PM PDT So for those like me, trying to find new things to learn. Today I discovered mkchromecast. It's an open source application that basically allows you to stream media to your Chromecast. It also works in the CLI. Being as happy as I am, I just wanted to share this. [link] [comments] |
Good Linux for old laptop used for Netflix and DVD movies? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:01 PM PDT The title says it, really. I've bought an old HP Pavilion dv6 notebook (AMD Phenom X2, 4GB RAM), and the plan is basically to use it to play DVDs and watch Netflix and some other browser-based TV streams. It came pre-installed with unregistered Windows 10, and while that works well enough, I'd rather use a less bloated OS plus not cheat on the licencing. So, what Linux distro would you recommend for this use case? Any lightweight Linux distro with Chrome and VLC? Or something more specific? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:29 AM PDT Hi Linux wizards, I would be very happy to receive any answer to this not-so-googleable question I have. I have recently discovered Linux, and are somewhat enthusiastic about the idea of reviving my friend's discarded iMac as my new workstation. However, I also need an external monitor for the Windows laptop I use for work. The dream would therefore be to install a Linux distro on the iMac and use this as my private computer, while also being able to plug the iMac to my work laptop as an external monitor when needed. I've found articles stating that the iMac with its native settings can work as a monitor for a PC, but can this still be possible if I install Linux on the machine? [link] [comments] |
How to get more information regarding linux installation, partitions during installation. Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:39 PM PDT I have been using ubuntu for last 5-6 months and I have learned quite a bit about GNU/Linux, just the topic i have almost no knowledge is the general installation process of a linux OS. I would like to run arch with ubuntu (dual boot) but I don't know where to start. Any tips, links, suggestions would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How do I automatically mount my laptop's secondary drive? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:31 PM PDT I have a laptop running Kubuntu as of yesterday, and it has a 256GB M.2, which is the boot drive, and a 2TB secondary SATA hard drive. How do I make Ubuntu automatically mount that secondary drive on startup? it has data on it, so I don't want to lose any of that data. [link] [comments] |

Question about timezone settings Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:33 PM PDT This might be a stupid question, but I can't figure this out. The correct local time is displayed on the panel, but is 2 hours incorrect in any browser (most noticeably on Reddit, where new posts show "Posted 2 hours ago"). Is there another place I'm supposed to change the time-zone settings? Manjaro XFCE 20.0.3 ___________________________________ Edit: Refreshing Reddit, it goes from "Just now" to "2 hours ago" as the page reloads [link] [comments] |

KDE (Dolphin) terrible file transfer speeds Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:02 AM PDT Hi, I'm in the process of "distro shopping" and trying out the current versions of the major DEs. I have to admit, I really love the new KDE and the fact that memory management is much improved has me leaning towards going with it. However, I did some file transfer tests and Dolphin had a terrible time with them. The speeds were great (amazing, really) when he files were smaller but when it got to a large file, the speeds would drop from 150mbps to between 2-9mbps. This means that a chore that should have taken a reasonable amount of time suddenly took 15-25 times that. Does anyone know why this is? Is it specific to Dolphin or KDE? I was running a live usb and couldn't download a different file manager but I've heard that Midnight and Krusader are both great. Being unable to try these yet, I'd love any help or thoughts on what's happening to my transfer speeds. I've tried the same distro with XFCE and Gnome and neither of these suffered these weird speeds drops on large file transfers. It's a shame, because I actually love a lot of how Dolphin handles files management and transfers. It has, by far, the most data about the transfer in progress. Thanks so much in advance! Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:59 AM PDT I have a 4 drive mdadm array set up as raid 6. It's getting to the point where I'd like to expand the array. I've read somewhere that adding drives to an array stresses all the hard drives in the array. Is it better for the health of the drives to add 2 drives at once, or does it not make much difference compared to adding one drive now and another in a few months? [link] [comments] |
Getting failed to mount and defend errors after shutting down and reboots Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:42 AM PDT I am getting defend and failed to mount errors on partitions I thought I had already removed with Gparted. I am running Ubuntu 20.04 I removed a partition and reformatted it as ext4 instead of NTFS. I am trying to get Star wars battlefront 2 working, its not installing the thinclient and now two games are not launching as it should. The two games that are not launching are not on the drive that has the new partition those are on a separate one. Games will process vulkan shaders then it'll go back to hit play. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:23 AM PDT I have a remote server that runs on Debian, I was wondering if it would matter much which distro I choose to install on my laptop. I'm trying to have the best ecosystem between the two machines, would e.g Linux Mint deal well with Debian? Or should I also install Debian on my laptop? [link] [comments] |
3 Monitors: Doublicate 2, Extend 1 Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:49 AM PDT I have 3 monitors: - my builtin laptop monitor - a hdmi monitor on my desk - a TV all are 1080p I want to show the same content on the builtin and the TV but have another (primary) monitor on my hdmi desk-monitor. Restarting the virtual machine makes it unable to boot [virt-manager] Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:20 AM PDT Recently, I have tried to set up some virtual machines. I went with QEMU/KVM and Libvirt. As a GUI, I chose virt-manager. Everything was going well until I restarted my virtual machine.
I have searched the issue. From what I could gather, the problem is about 'raw' to 'qcow2' formatting. The 'qcow2' image that virt-manager creates has 'format=raw' in its xml file. I have tried to import the file, then change it to 'qcow2'. Also, I exported it later. Still, it won't work. Afterwards, I set SATA option alongside VirtIO. The virtual machine can be spawned from that option (it points to the original ISO file), but not from the qcow2 image. How can I fix this issue? I have searched a lot about it and tried a lot of different things. But, I couldn't get it to work. [link] [comments] |
