    Laptop or Raspberry PI

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 04:55 AM PDT

    Hi. I have recently purchased a Raspberry PI 4 and am wondering if it's worth purchasing a laptop or sticking with my PI to get a real experience of Linux. Everything is a lot slower on the Pi 4 and im just wondering if it's worth getting a laptop as well for Linux.

    Thank You!

    EDIT: Thank you all so much for the upvotes!

    New ubuntu user here, probably downloaded some stuff wrong, not really sure where to start fixing it.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:10 PM PDT

    So, in my haze of trying to figure out Nvidia drivers, and system monitoring tools and the like, I heard about a handy program named Wine that can be important to run certain programs, so I thought 'yeah, I should probably get this' and I downloaded it via the Software and Update program.

    It didn't show up when I searched my computer for it, nor in the contextual right click menu when I click on a .exe

    I then tried to install wineHQ via terminal, and it didn't work, saying the "software pack can't be found" or something to that effect.

    I think went for a basic 'sudo install wine' I think was what I typed, and it said wine was already installed.

    As one can imagine, I'm not really frustrated because I knew there would be a few quirks in getting used to linux, but I'm definitely very confused. A few more notes

    Honestly, I think I did the installations wrong; is there somewhere I can look at to uninstall stuff and retry? I don't want to redo steam and discord and all that atm, but I guess I'm only 2 days into this so if I have to reformat everything that's not the worst case scenario, but is obviously not preferable.

    i started using Linux or pop os

    every time i plug in my second monitor the sounds gets scratchy, and it has this crackling sound when sound is playing. when i unplug the monitor from my graphics card the sound goes back to normal.

    if i plug in my speakers to my motherboard the sound also comes out scratchy.

    The only time it works correctly is when i have one monitor connected and the speakers are connected to the monitor directly.

    Mint or Ubuntu for web dev in older laptop?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:37 AM PDT

    I'm currently on Windows 7 and learning web development and want to switch to Linux. From what I've read around, Ubuntu is better for development, but Mint is "lighter" and faster on older laptops. How true are these? My specs are i7-2760qm, 8gb ram, nvidia 1000m. Would Ubuntu be a problem? Would I miss out on anything if I went with Mint? Are old nvidia drivers supported? Any insight is welcome.

    What's the most Windows-like experience I can get on Linux?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:59 AM PDT

    I'm changing my daily driver OS from Windows 10 to Linux for a multitude of reasons, but I find myself distro-hopping and I still can't find something similar to the Windows desktop environment.

    In short, I would like suggestions for distros or desktop environments that are the most similar to Windows.

I installed manjaro but in the installation i added a passcode that was giving me problems ( it asked for the password in the very beggining but when i put it nothing would happen), when i turned my computer off a couple of times it gave me the option to boot windows, so i did. Once i got into windows i cleared the partition linux was in in order to get a fresh start, but when i reset it to install manjaro im stuck in grub rescue, and now when i turn the computer off no matter how many times it doesnt exit grub rescue. Can anyone help me out?

    Is there a way to automate the process of updating the hosts file on Ubuntu?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:20 PM PDT

    I want to keep a hosts file and want to keep it updated always. I use this website for getting hosts file. Is there a way so that I don't have to go to this website every month and update my hosts file manually?

    Directory still writing after setting read only?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:24 PM PDT

    I am trying to set my origin directory for my game to read only because its constantly creating local.xml files causing stuttering. I have tried the recommended command on the proton github issue forums. The command recommended is chmod -R 555 then the path.

    I tried

    sudo chmod -R 555 "/mnt/New Volume/Steam-Linux/steamapps/compatdata/1237950/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application Data/Origin"

    Yet as soon as the game starts I see like 10 local files being created and deleted rapidly and it does match whenever it stutters.

    Does anyone have any idea why its not setting to read only?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:55 AM PDT

    I have read that it is also a problem on WIndows, where it might be a problem with antivirus software or admin rights. How could such thing be done on linux? Do I give rights to Fallout76.exe? Has anybody experienced the same issue?

    I am using Manjaro XFCE

    How to get back to Windows 10???Please

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:15 AM PDT

    I have to say linux is great and I like it because it looks cool and it makes me feel "smart" when I use the terminal, but I want to go back to Windows 10 because I can't play my favourite games with my friends. I downloaded the ISO windows 10 file from the official website but when I copy it on my bootable usb flash drive it says the file install.wim is too large. What do I do now? I don't have a DVD or any of that stuff? Please help

    I didn't know this... unless I'm wrong. I'm using Arch. Do you automatically start running the new Kernel when you update without rebooting?

    Star Labs MK IV vs Dell XPS vs Others? For Ubuntu noob!

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 06:51 AM PDT

    I'm completely new to Linux and I'm not very knowledgeable about computers in general, however I'd like to switch from Windows to Linux. I'm thinking Ubuntu would be a good place to begin. I need a new laptop. After doing some reading I think I would be best suited to get a computer with Ubuntu pre-installed. I've been searching at a lot of different companies, Systems76, Slimbook, Juno, Star Labs, Dell, and some others. What I'm leaning towards right now is the new Star Labs MK IV https://starlabs.systems/pages/labtop-mk-iv and the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition. However I have a couple questions and concerns.

    Essentially what I'll be using my computer for is: browsing, email, writing, watching videos, maybe playing a really old game, potentially light video video editing.

    I've seen a lot of negative reviews of the new XPS 9300. Like all sorts of problems, bad battery, battery draining on suspend, problems with coming in and out of suspend, bluetooth issues, mouse issues, overheating, and one thing I keep seeing is Dell support is quite shitty.

    I haven't found a lot of reviews of Star Labs, and of course no reviews of the new MK IV that is coming out.

    1. Which do you think would have a better battery life? Star Labs says they get about 7 hours, which makes me wonder if the actual battery time is less, or maybe they are posting the actual accurate battery time? Whereas Dell they don't say the estimated time but I've seen mixed reviews on this with Linux getting less battery life than Windows. Also I can't tell if either of the batteries can be replaced.

    1. Which has a better screen? The Dell goes up to I think 500 nits (this is all new to me) and the MK IV I don't know, I haven't been able to find that information. The Dell is 1920x1200 and the mkiv is 1920x1080, so the Dell screen is better right? I do want a good screen I can use outdoors and one that is just as comfortable as possible to read on and use. I read they both have IPS, which I guess is a good thing. I'm still not clear on what that does.

    2. Are the trackpad functions the same? IDK how to quite phrase this question. But I like a big trackpad whereby you can scroll with it and you can click on something and open a new tab etc. Maybe all trackpads can do that? It's a simple thing but without being able to test the computers out it's difficult for me to know.

    3. The MK IV gives two choices for the processor. One is the dual core 2.1GHz 10th gen intel turbo boost to 4.1 GHz and the other is the 1.1 GHz hexa-core 10th gen i7 turbo to 4.7 but cost $209 more. I often have a crazy amount of tabs open in Firefox, like 50-200. Would the 2.1 be able to handle that? I have no frame of reference.

    4. It seems like Star Labs actually offers support whereas Dell says they offer support but from what I read they don't actually offer any support for Ubuntu. This is a factor for me as well. I also read other places like Slimbook and Systems76 offer support as well (although I did come across an angry post on Reddit about their support that even included a recording on Dropbox of their customer support).

    Whichever laptop I get I'd like it to last me a long time, at least ten years, so I want something well built and that can be serviced. I also would prefer to support a small company like Star Labs (or some other company) over Dell. But I'm concerned about there not being many reviews of Star Labs or others like Slimbook.

    Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    'Firmware not found' and refuses to install Pop!_OS on old Macbook

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 05:46 AM PDT

    Hello,Ive been trying to install Pop!_OS on my old 2009 macbook pro, but so far have only been able to boot the software from the USB stick, and not install it. Everything works when i have the USB plugged in except for the install button (the internet/wifi also doesn't work, but i understand I have to install drivers for that) When i click on the install button it, the thinking-ball triggers for about 20 seconds and it looks like it's about to open the install prompts, but then nothing happens and the thinking-ball disappears. The image below is one of the last pages of the pre-install code view that I see before it boots to the 'trial' of Pop!_OS and it says

    ERROR: Firmware file .. not found

    Could this be what is causing me issues? and if so, how do i install this particular firmware on my mac? (ive only ever update BIOS's in the past, but never for this mac)

    how to resolve "read: Connection reset by peer" when using sshfs?

    So I am trying to use sshfs but when I run the command Immediately receive `read: Connection reset by peer`. I expect a password to be prompted so I changed the command to be `sshfs -o ssh_command="sshpass -p passed ssh" root@host:/ ~/mnt/host` but it still says the same. Any idea how I can discover where the issue lies|?

    edit: I can normally ssh to this hose by doing "ssh root@host"

    Onscreen keyboard with Fn key

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:25 AM PDT

    I have an old laptop on which I'm running ubuntu budgie. My keyboard doesn't work so I'm using an external keyboard. The problem is my.wifi is not working and when I checked it shows wifi is hard key disabled. To enable it I need to press fn key and f4 but fn key doesn't work. So I thought an onscreen keyboard would suffice but the onscreen keyboard native to ubuntu does not have that. Any suggestions?

    How to add printer drivers to Raspbian headless home server?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:11 AM PDT

    I'm trying to connect an old Xerox Phaser 3121 laser printer to Raspberry Pi 3b+, running on the latest command line only Raspbian.

    I installed CUPS, configured it. But it doesn't print the text page. I experimented with different settings to no avail. CUPS can see drivers for XeroxFuji but doesn't show any specific model, just installs some generic FujiXerox driver. I guess this is the problem. I used to Linux drivers from Xerox site, but they are from 2005 and didn't work at all.

    last year I installed the printer on Raspberian with desktop and package manager had specific driver package for this model. But without the pack manager I don't know how to find, install these drivers from command line.

    Do more experience users have any ideas, or solutions?

    Adding Text Before Closing </body> Tag in a Script

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:05 AM PDT

    I will do my best not to create an XY Problem

    Here is my situation. I have a minified html file called file.html that looks like this

    <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en"><head><meta charset="UTF-8"><title></title></head><body></body></html>

    I need to insert contents of file2.html before the closing body tag. If the contents of file2 look like

    <h1>hello</h1>

    I need the output final ouput to be <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en"><head><meta charset="UTF-8"><title></title></head><body><h1>hello</h1></body></html>

    The script I wrote looks like this

    ```
    !/bin/sh -e
    file2=$(cat file2.html) sed "s/</body>/$file2&/" file1.html ```
    I receive the error below due to the fact that the html in the variable $file2 is not escaped, and therefore messes with sed sed: -e expression #1, char 23: unknown option to `s`
    I am by no means set on using sed. If there is a better tool for the job I will happily use it. I just am familiar with sed so that is what I tried.
    Just started using Ubuntu, installed steam, can’t make shortcut on desktop.
    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:02 AM PDT
    So I installed steam, but I noticed there was no icon on the desktop. I like to keep things organized, so I went into
    Files => Other Locations => Computer => usr => share => applications Which is where I found steam, and the rest of my applications.
    I right clicked steam and hit "copy to" and copied it to the desktop; however, when trying to open that shortcut I'm getting an error: "the link steam.desktop is broken, move it to trash? This link cannot be used because it's target '../../lib/steam/steam.desktop' doesn't exist"
