Best Linux Version for a really old Laptop?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:37 AM PDT

    Hello Linux Reddit Community!

I recently found my earliest Laptop, an LG X120. Now, there's not much of importance on it and I don't really need it, but I would like to install a lightweight Linux version onto it, in the simplest way possible. Since I usually stick with Windows tough, I have absolutely no Idea what would fit. I'll leave the Stats down below, so feel free to let me know what I should use and why!

[Stats] Current OS: Windows XP (Home Edition K) Core: Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz) RAM: 0.99 GB

What's the problem with Ubuntu based distros?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:02 PM PDT

So, I was on a discord Linux server where someone asked if they should try Elementary OS. Many people told him that he should stay away from most Ubuntu-based distros because they're "risky"? I was just wondering what this means and what counts as a risky Ubuntu based distro.

[Kubuntu]-Understanding Users, consequences of installing through apt-get, awareness of what is happening where..

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:19 AM PDT

Hi! This is my firs-ever post on reddit! Thank you for your time reading :)

So im kinda a all or nothing guy so I just wanted to start understanding whatever was on the other side of the fence, so I just chose kubuntu as my first approach to linux since it was the most recommended to me by my friends (the main reasons were that being close to ubuntu and having a huge user base, Its likely to find solutions more easily.

Yesterday I was setting up my Intellij to keep on my journey learning Spring so, as a tutorial suggested me , I needed to install Yarn and after that set the global variable path... I ended with a broken bashrc (because I just followed the tutorial, not fully understanding what was I doing) and stuck on a login loop.. The same friend suggested me that I should do my stuff as a normal user and not as a root user, but the only account I know is the one prompted me to create during the installation of Kubuntu.

Can anyone help me to understand how to approach this Users/Super-user thing? I want to install stuff like nodejs, yarn, lombok and alike not screwing up things that I dont understand.

Also.. does looking for ubuntu threads/problems/solution equals to applying them on Kubuntu? I started thos whole thing 2 days ago after a whole life as a naive windows user...

Thank you for your time again!!

    USBs mounting as read-only

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:10 PM PDT

Hey all. So I have this issue with my USBs mounting as read-only. I've looked online and a lot of places suggest that the issue stems from using gparted to do my formatting. Regardless the sources online also recommend that I can do a chown to get full permissions back but it doesn't work. When I try to access the USB through CLI it works just fine, I can copy, move, create files no issues. Only problems happen through GUI. Plugging these USBs into my Windows machine doesn't seem to be a problem, they all work fine. Any ideas why chown isn't working or how to get ownership of the drive back?

Dell Latitude D630 Linux Mint 18.3 All drives are fat32 of varying sizes makes and models

    I've tried:

sudo chown martinid:martinid /media/martinid/usb_label which doesn't seem to work. I mean the command executes but doesn't have the desired effect.

But CLI works just fine for example: cp /Desktop/textfile.txt /media/martinid/usb_label

    So yeah any ideas?

Switching to Linux on an Acer

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:18 AM PDT

Good morning all! Quick question about switching from Windows 10 to Linux Ubuntu 20.04. I am on an Acer and they have a recovery partition in case something goes wrong with the alternative to have a recovery USB stick for $50.00 if said partition is erased. I HIGHLY doubt I will ever go back to windows however I am thinking in terms of what if I sell this laptop or someone else wants to use and wants windows. I am not crazy about dual booting but it is an option to restore back to factory. I have heard of Clonezilla. Has anyone used this to make a copy and restore the entire laptop back to factory? Any other options. Thanks for reading!!

Switched from W10 to Ubuntu 20.04

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:00 PM PDT

Hi, i am new to ubuntu. My device has An nVme and a Hdd alongside with it. It was configured as optane without raid by default in bios. So ubuntu prompted me to change it to AHCI. And so i did. Then after finished installing, i read threads about AHCI in ssd will make my Ssd life shorter. Any thoughts? Cause i dont wanna go back to billy g's OS anymore but i dont want my device life become shorter too. :(

And also, i found an option on nvdia prime profile Nvdia(Performance) Nvdia(On-demand) Intel(Power saving)

I selected "On-demand" thinking it is like on windows, when u are in desktop and doing light workloads, it uses intel gpu, and automatically switch to gpu when an app needs it. Is that correct?

Pls I need answers on these matters so that i can enjoy linux forever. Thank u.

How do I secure my shit, and stop a hostile third-party flodding my garden?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:51 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I've recently got into tinkering around with a Raspberry Pi. It allows me to practice my coding since I've been learning Python recently, and gives me an oh so practical way to scratch my techy itch.

I currently have a Raspberry Pi ZeroW sat in my garage, running Rasbian Light (a stripped down Debian with no desktop environment), connected to my home WiFi, and using various Python scripts collecting data from sensors (temperature, humidity, soil moisture etc.). At the moment it's just data-logging, but eventually I'd like to add on some outputs via relay boards to control things like a water-pump to water the plants, fans to maintain humidity, low voltage linear motor to open/close greenhouse ventilation slats etc..

Currently, I use SSH over my local network to connect to my Pi. The Pi logs everything as .csv files locally on the microSD card, and then periodically (via cron) runs a bash script that adds, commits, and pushes all the .csv logs to a private github repo. I also have a few other it repos on the device that contain the main "project" scripts, and a few usefule "general purpose" type scripts.

I set up a burner account on github for the Pi (with myemailaddress+1@gmail.com so mail comes back to my main email account), and then added my main github account as a contributor to all the repos so I can pull/push, and then set the Pi to store credentials to the burner account so it can push without requiring me to put in a password for verification.

I current pull these data logs to my laptop, and play about with the data in Jupyter and use it to test out my graphing and data-analysis skills (originally started with Python for scientific data analysis in my PhD).

    My concerns are:

    1. I'm using GitHub as an improptue drop-box to shunt csv's - it works, but I'm sure it's not the right tool for the job.
    2. GitHub credential storage results in username/passwd of the burner account being stored locally in a plaintext file.
    3. The Pi is on the local network, but for all intents and purpose remote - it has no keyboard/display attached, so I do all management over SSH.

So I guess, I'm looking for suggestions to do this all more securely?

If it matters, my future plans (in addition to adding output and control elements) include some sort of browser accesible dashboard for the data/graphs I'm producing, generated and hosted by the Pi.

    Question about distros.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:35 PM PDT

Hi, been using linux, mostly ubuntu as linux is free and does what I need. I know nothing but the simple basics and follow instructions in ubuntu help sites or youtube if I come across some issues. I use ubuntu because my assumption is most people use this distro and so ubuntu has some "herd immunity" to virus/malware/security issues as there are more coders/users to flag up malicious code. I know Ubuntu is created by a "company" but is that not better as its coding is more closed and with more team oversight. Would not a smaller linux distro created by a "few" in a "basement" be more risky as there is less oversight. I apologise if I offend but as a linuxnoob it just seems a large established distro like Ubuntu is much less risky because of this

How does adding to path by adding export PATH=$PATH:/exampleDir to bashrc work?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:33 PM PDT

Apparently you add directories to your path by putting a line in your bashrc file that reads

    PATH=$PATH:/exampleDirName

How does this work? I've looked up bash syntax (I think bashrc itself is written in bash) but wasn't able to figure it out

The only thing keeping me from using Linux as a daily driver is Audio.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Maybe I'm not educated enough but this is what I know.

I have a 2.1 Microlab speakers, I love them, but I only love them with an Equalizer.

Its shocking how better they sound after applying an equalizer on them, from pretty bad to amazing.

on Windows: I'm using Equalizer APO + Peace

on macOS (Hackintosh): I'm using Boom 3D Or eqMac

    on Linux (Fedora 32):

Yes, I'm aware of PulseEffects. But its not working well on my end, the equalizer doesn't produce the highs that i'm looking for, and if i'm adding an effect like a crystalizer or a bass enhancer, I get crackling sound immediately. I really need music in my workflow, and knowing how good my speakers can sound, I dodge the Fedora workspace.

How are you guys dealing with this? maybe theres a hardware equalizer I can buy? I dont mind at all. Thanks for any tips

I've had this issue both with Manjaro Plasma and now with Solus Plasma. After installing emoticon sets through System Settings>Emoticons and then launching Emoji Picker, the installed sets don't appear in the latter. Is there a separate picker app for installed emoticons, or am I missing something?

Why do you use linux and why should I switch to linux from Windows?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:57 AM PDT

I am a long time windows user, started with 3.1 and used most of them since. I used to work helpdesk/desktop support/desktop admin, currently in a BSA role. I dabbled with linux over a decade ago but felt it wasn't easy enough yet. Didn't feel like having to edit a text file to make my mouse work properly.

A friend of my recently switched to linux and gave me the itch to start looking into it again. I tried several live USB's of a few different popular user friendly distros and many I still had issues with mainly with dual monitor support, but I was usually able to fix it by reinstalling drivers. I kind of like the look of UbuntuDDE enough that i wanted to stick with it and try to see what issues it gave me and how easy they were to fix. Current issue I am working on is converting my windows storage space that houses my Plex movies to something linux can read. Regardless I will still maintain a dual boot with windows.

But all this got me back to wondering, why Linux? What does it offer me over linux? I know its going to have issues windows doesn't(RGB controls, doesn't work with my GoXLR mixer and some other peripherals). But its also more secure, I think. Is that one of the main reasons people use linux?

One thing I am curious about is the functionality. What cool features does it have that windows doesn't. Workflow and usability type stuff I may not be aware of as I learn it. I am a bit bored in this COVID world, so I have time to play with it. But at the same time wonder if I am just wasting my time and will soon find myself back on Windows alone. The other part that makes me wonder if its worth my time is that I mainly use it for web browsing and general type stuff and some gaming. But if Linux is more secure and has other benefits maybe its still worth the switch? Thoughts?

Do any pre-installed Linux computers exist without glitches?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:39 AM PDT

I'm interested in buying a computer with Ubuntu (seems to be the easiest to use) pre-installed. However, I'm concerned that even buying one with it pre-installed I'll still have issues with every day simple use (browsing, movies, typing etc). For example basic problems like the computer not coming out of standby mode, or not going into standby mode and the battery draining etc things like that.

The computers I'm most interested in right are the Star Labtop MK IV and Slimbook Pro x. Does anyone have any experience with those computers?

Edit: I've seen System76. They're more expensive and are Clevo computers. I've read a lot of bad things about their hardware that and System76 is more expensive than the others.

    Fixing Grub with EFI

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:07 AM PDT

I had my dual boot working then I got a little over my head trying to use an external drive to set up a stand alone imaging system, and now I can no longer access my OSes via GRUB2 like I used to.

I am using an Acer Aspire E5-573G. Its a 5 year old laptop with 8 GB of memory and a 1 TB HDD. It came with Windows 10 Home installed and that is the same install of Windows that I am still using though with updates it's up to build 18363.900.

A while ago I installed Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS on the same HDD and created a pretty big partition accessible from both OSes. This seemed to work well until a Windows update clobbered my dualboot a few months ago. I was eventually able to repair it but now I don't remember exactly what I did.

I decided that in addition to my other back ups I should use a spare external 1TB HDD to set up a bootable Ubuntu system to image the drive. I made a mistake installing Ubuntu onto the external drive and broke GRUB. My best guess is that uuid for the external drive was added into one or more of the configuration files needed to boot. Booting onto the external worked as did saving the backup but when I was done, removed the external and rebooted I got this prompt when I turned it on again

GNU GRUB version 2.02 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. grub>

if I give the command "exit" this message shows up

Boot succeed - Windows Boot Manager

Then a new screen with this text based menu

Boot Manager Boot Option Menu Windows Boot Manager (WDC WD10JPVX-22JC3T0) Unknown Device: (WDC WD10JPVX-22JC3T0) Windows Boot Manager (WDC WD10JPVX-22JC3T0)

Choosing "3" starts up Windows which seems to work correctly. The other options bring me back to the first prompt from which I can get to the text menu again.

I can access my Ubuntu system by booting off a USB drive with Super Grub on it. There are a lot of options in the menu it creates which seem to be redundant but it does work.

    The sequence of -> opens Ubuntu, I have not explored all the other options Super Grub2 v2.04 menu ->Detect and show boot methods —— Operating Systems —— Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-28-generic (hd1,gpt4) Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-28-generic (single) (hd1,gpt4) Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-53-generic (hd1,gpt4) Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-53-generic(single) (hd1,gpt4) Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-59-generic (hd1,gpt4) Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-59-generic (single) (hd1,gpt4) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/fwupx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/grubx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/shimx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/mmx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/Boot/bootx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/Boot/fbx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/Boot/mmx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgr.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/Microsoft/Boot/memtest.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/oem/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/oem/Boot/bootmgr.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/efi/oem/Boot/memtest.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/ubuntu/fwupx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/ubuntu/shimx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/ubuntu/mmx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/Boot/fbx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/Boot/mmx64.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgr.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/memtest.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/oem/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/oem/Boot/bootmgr.efi (hd1,gpt1) (hd1,gpt1)/EFI/oem/Boot/memtest.efi (hd1,gpt1) —— grub.cfg - Extract entries —— — Entries from… (hd1,gpt4)/boot/grub/grub.cfg — ->Ubuntu Advanced options for Ubuntu Windows Boot Manager (on /dev/sda1) System setup —— grub.cfg - (GRUB2 configuration files) —— (hd1,gpt4)/boot/grub/grub.cfg —— menu.lst - (GRUB legacy configuration files) —— (No menu.lst file detected) —— core.img - (GRUB2 installation) —— (No core.img file detected) —— Disks and Partitions (Chainload) —— Reboot SG2D in BIOS mode to Chainload disks and Partitioned (proc) (hd0) (hd0,msdos2) "SG2DISOS" (hd1) ""SG2DISOS"" (hd1,gpt6) """SG2DISOS""" (hd1,gpt5) "SharedData" (hd1,gpt4) (hd1,gpt3) "WindowsC" (hd1,gpt2) ""WindowsC"" (hd1,gpt1) "ESP" —- Bootable ISOs (in /boot-isos or /boot/boot-isos) ——

    Bluetooth headset pairing problems

The only complain and problem that when connecting a bluetooth headset via blueman the GUI interface it connects to the device but in the audio mixer pulseaudio volume control doesn't show up, any fix to that? the only devices that shows are the headphones 3.5 jack unplugged and the HDMI monitor that has speakers and don't work

EDIT: Now when trying to connect to the headset I can't Connection Failed: Resource Not Ready when I only use it with my PC.

Every time I put a GPU in my server I lost the internet connection. Anyone who knows what's happening?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:26 AM PDT

Basically I have a server with openmediavault 4 (debian 9). It has 4 GB RAM an Intel core2duo CPU and a 500W PSU. I want to put a GPU in it because I use it to transcode videos so I bought an Nvidia GT something (doesn't really matter) I've put it in the slot and when I started the server there were no internet. The UTP LEDs were on so I thought there's a connection. But I couldn't even ping computers on my LAN. Then I took off the GPU and magic happened, there was an internet connection again. I thought that the card was compromised or something so I've never put it back. Recently I've bought another card, a GTX 1650 and I did the same thing. Put in the card and wanted to install drivers, but I couldn't because again, there's no internet connection. Every time I try to put in a GPU my internet goes away. The LEDs on the UTP socket are bright and if I know right it means there's a connection. But in reality there isn't. I'm lost. I don't know what to do with this problem. If you think you could help me, I would be very grateful.

Linux Mint - weird things happening

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:12 AM PDT

A few days ago I installed some ancient Ubuntu on my computer (from 2016), and now when I am using Linux Mint 19.3 (my main OS) weird things are happening with the loading screen.

Instead of the normal logo, there is only an inscription: Linux Mint 19.3, and after some time green dots turn red. To the right of the red dots appears a "blinking terminal line" (idk how to call it)

Later a text-only startup screen appears asking me for my login (it always appeared, but now sometimes it has a red font), and after a while, a startup screen with a graphical interface appears asking me for my login.

Everything seemed good, but after I asked Mint to reboot (via UI) kernel panic appeared. Every time I turn off Mint it quickly switches to the "terminal mode" and writes "Failed to *do something* with a process" (the computer shuts down so quickly that I can't read it)

Probably the best way to fix it is just to reinstall the OS, but if you know how to fix it I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks for your time, and sorry for bad English.

Troubles compiling an older version of R from source

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:59 AM PDT

    Hello hello,

I am under Linux Manjaro xfce and I have an instance of R 4.0.1 installed already on my laptop, with all the needed dependencies working. I need to install an old version in parallel, to run some code (not mine) from 2017 that broke during the several updates in the meantime, to later switch it on RStudio. So, first of all: if anybody knows a faster/better way of doing what I am doing, that's also very very welcome.

I have been following this guide to install it and I ran on bash

    export R_VERSION=3.4.1 https://cran.rstudio.com/src/base/R-3/R-${R_VERSION}.tar.gz tar -xzvf R-${R_VERSION}.tar.gz cd R-${R_VERSION} ./configure \ --prefix=/opt/R/${R_VERSION} \ --enable-memory-profiling \ --enable-R-shlib \ --with-blas \ --with-lapack make

but before I can run sudo make install I get this error:

/usr/bin/ld: connections.o: relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against symbol `R_OutputCon' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC /usr/bin/ld: final link failed: bad value collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

Any idea on what might cause that or how to fix it? Thank you very much!
