is it possible to convert coaxial to cat5 to supply my modem?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Hopefully I am asking the right question, is it possible to move my modem to another room, but instead of getting a longer coaxial cable, utilize a 100-ft Cat5 I currently have by adapting them? Is there an adapter that can do:

    wall coax port -> adapter -> cat5 -> adapter -> modem

It's not the end of the world if I have to get a longer coax, but I wanted to see if there's something out there before I do. Appreciate any help, thanks.

    Mesh router suggestion

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT

Right now I'm using a Linksys WRT32x router (openWRT) and a E4200 router as extender (Tomato). The extender uses 5GHz to connect to main router and 2.4GHz for extended WiFi. It is usable but I don't get good speed at far end of the house from the main router. The extended WiFi from E4200 is very slow and unstable. I can still connect directly to WRT32x's 5Hz network but the signal is very weak, so although the speed is still is good, the latency is not good and unstable.

So I want a mesh system with the following requirement:

    Main router:

    1. Tri-band (1 band for dedicated backhaul)
    2. 4x LAN ports (for my TV, console, AV system etc.)
    3. 3rd party FW support or known good stock FW

    Extender:

    1. Tri-band
    2. 3rd party FW support or known good stock FW

Usually the mesh systems are small and don't have the LAN ports I prefer to have. So I'm looking for suggestions. I've only had Linksys in the past, but they don't seem to have mesh technology on their standard routers (like Asus), which limits the extend-ability, but maybe it's fine since I won't need more than 1 extender. I don't care about WiFi6 either, since it's new and very expensive.

New home buyer - 600mbps xfinity plan

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:07 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I am moving into a new home at the end of the month. Comcast xfinity is currently the only service available in that area. I would like to get the 600mbps plan. What router and modem or router/modem combo do you recommend? I have seen so many online an I am not sure what to buy. I will mostly be using WiFi and maybe hard wire my Xbox for gaming. The house is 2,000 sq ft. Thank you in advance everyone.

Simple Question regarding modem->switch->two separate routers (Mods can delete once answered if this is too simple of a topic)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:03 PM PDT

Is there any reason you cannot do this config? Every time I see someone's home network they have one router in front of everything.

My current Ethernet runs and router restrictions would prove best suited to do the above scenario as

    Modem->switch->(2) routers->other house stuff

    Feedback?

Virgin Internet Modem Router (Valerie) DMZ WAN (CANADA) no internet access

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:33 PM PDT

My setup works fine with the Teksavvy modem for my other internet connection.

The following is after an EdgeRouter reset; Starting from a clean slate with only Virgin fibre internet.

I have a combo modem router (Valerie) provided by Virgin internet which I can't get working with my EdgeRouter X SFP v2.08.

I have fibre with Virgin but I think that is incidental.

It has a setting that puts a network device identified by mac address outside the routers firewall giving it the WAN IP address from the ISP.

To test. When I place my Mac mini outside the modem's firewall it has an internet connection.

It gets the ISP WAN IP E.g. 143.118.11.41 mask 255.255.0.0

When I do the same with the Edgerouter however the internet does not work.

It gets the ISP WAN IP E.g. 143.118.11.41/0 (I noticed /0, should it not be /16 ?)

    I've tried

    • using the basic setup wizard with DHCP
    • using the basic setup wizard with static IP information taken from when the Mac mini was used in the test
    • using the basic setup wizard with DHCP but after that changing the eth0 to static with /16 mask

I would rather not take the SFP out of Valerie and put it into the Edgerouter if I don't have to.

    Please help :)

(I am not able to add images to this post for some reason.)

Did I get Cat6 cable or not?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:36 PM PDT

I bought Southwire 500 ft. Blue 23/4 Solid CU CAT6 CMR (Riser) Data Cable from home depot. When I was terminating it, it did not have the pair separator inside the cable. Did I actually buy CAT6 cable or is this a knock off? What makes CAT6....CAT6?

Thanks, and sorry for formatting, on mobile.

    Which router should I buy?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:10 PM PDT

I am not a master on networking.

So I moved to a new place who landlord said it had 150mbps internet. But the tests reach 20ish/20ish.

Connection is good though, the router is on the laundry room but its actually flawless. He said if we wanted faster speeds we would need to get a newer router since the one he has is old and wouldnt delivery the total internet speed.

He also said it uses 802.11ac.

I was looking online and apparently routers say they deliver 150mbps on 5ghz but they don't actually? Which one should I buy to try to have over 100mbps ? Is that doable?

The router on the laundry room is wired to his ISP modem on his house, we live on the laneway.

Thank for the advice and sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Using own Router on Top of ISP

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Hi there, I've got starry internet which forces you to use their own modem/router combo. Unfortunately, the router doesn't have a lot of settings I can adjust, so was looking to get my own router and then AP. From what I have read, I would need to put the modem/router combo in bridge mode to use my own router on top of that. However, there is no option for that anywhere in the settings.

Would adding a router on top of that still work? Or would that mess things up?

    Budget Access Point Recommendations

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:27 PM PDT

I'm looking for something that's has a few LAN ports on it and that has at least N band. I'm willing to buy something used. Any recommendations? Anything sub $30?

I'm running this from a powerline adapter(ethernet) and I need to hook a desktop PC and provide wireless. My router is an Archer C7.

    Travel router suggestions

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:09 PM PDT

I have alway thought about getting something but at the end of the day I just want to veg out on vacation and end up not caring. However, something about the hotel I am currently at made me reconsider. Their "private wifi" is in the same subnet as their open public wifi. How do I know you ask? I have a terrible signal in my room so while attempting to join either one I kept getting no IP failures. Finally my firestick got on the "secured" network and pulled a 192.168.3 address and my phone after a few hundred tries got the on the open network, also pulling a 192.168.3 address. Scanned the network on my phone and boom there was my firestick. Facepalm.

Needless to say my laptop is staying in my backpack. And I'm on the market for travel routers. Any suggestions?

How important is router's processor when it's connected to wireless access points?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:03 PM PDT

    Hello folks,

I previously used TP-Link Archer C7 v2 but my friend gave me his Netgear Nighthawk R8000. It provided good coverage until I moved to a new house.
So I went and hooked up 2x TP-Link EAP225v3 as AP and disabled WiFi on my R8000 which went much smoother than I anticipated.
I'm not a network savvy person so most I do is portfoward some ports and that's pretty much it. No fancy QoS or anything like that (all set to default). There's around 20 devices connected in our house (16 wireless, 4 wired)

Now my question is would that dual core processor on R8000 actually provide better overall connection than Archer C7 even when wireless portion is offloaded to APs? Or would it not matter to the point where I can unbridge the modem, disable WiFi and connect the AP thus less wire clutter?

The reason I ask is because it may sound silly but I would rather have smaller footprint device than a big one.

    4G Sim-card router?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:09 PM PDT

Hi all I'm currently live in Melbourne, Australia. I want to use a router with a simcard plan that will also allow port fowarding. Is this possible and if so what speeds I'm looking for at least 80 mpbs download, I don't care about the upload speeds. Also is this is even worth it or would it just be better to get a normal NBN router and a Telstra plan?

    Help improving wifi performance

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:54 PM PDT

So I need help figuring out what settings I can change to improve my wifi performance, not necessarily speed but more like reliability, yes I know I could simply go get a better wifi router but all the stores near me are closed bc of you know what... Anyway here's a SS of my Gateways wifi settings page lemme know what I can change here, https://imgur.com/gallery/G5ro3P7 I currently pay for 80 down 20 up, it's a fiber to home service and I probably should say that I'm not in the United States.

Edit: My main issues is signal strength, and overall speed, if I'm in my living room where the gateway wifi combo thing is located I get the speeds I pay for, but if I go into my bedroom that's only a few feet away that 80 Mbps speed drops to less then 20mbps sometimes dipping into 7/6 mbps but oddly enough the upload speeds stay consistent until I'm in my kitchen or on my back porch which is quite far away, here are some SS of the signal strength in my living room and bedroom For reddit https://imgur.com/gallery/pgZuVuJ the difference this not that big in my opinion to warrant the speed dropoff, if you need anymore into just ask and I'll provide it.

Edit once more: I'm currently on channel 11 the least crowded Wi-Fi channel for me right now I've tried channels 1 and 6 but the issue still remains and all my walls are wooden no concrete or metals from where my bed is the wifi Router/gateway is roughly 15 feet away with only one wall in the way.

    Bandwidth monitoring on uncustomizable router

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Sorry if I am misusing terms I am a newbie at this networking stuff. So, I have a vonage router and a arris sbg6700 ac modem. From what I've searched up, neither are supported by openwrt or ddwrt. I was wondering what other options I have to see exactly which devices are connected to the network and their bandwidth use. I saw a raspberry pi setup in an older post but it didn't have anything to see what devices are using my network. Something that could do this and is cheap would really help. Thanks!

    Cable Splitters (Question)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:50 PM PDT

Currently, in my house, I have 2 cable boxes on a coax splitter, I am looking to move the modem to the same spot using the CMC2003H 3-Way Splitter by Antronix. Currently there is a 2 way splitter made by the same company. Would changing it to this 3 way splitter worsen my internet? can someone recommend a cheap splitter that wouldn't degrade my internet speed?

Is IPS/IDS really necessary for a relatively simple home network?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 08:57 PM PDT

Say you have basic firewall rules/vlans/vpns set up on a router, does a basic home user with, say, a dozen wired/wireless IoT devices and a 4-5 other devices (phones, tablet, computers) connected to the network also really need IPS/IDS, or is that overkill?

I know opinions will differ, but let me know specifically why you feel it's either a somewhat pointless or a vital feature for the average home user (ie. nice to have vs. need to have). Up to now I've never even had the option of IPS/IDS on my routers and done just fine, but I'm in the market for a new one and am wondering if it's something worth having on my list of potential features.

    Network Split: Privacy vs. i-dont-care

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:46 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

i got couple of linux devices that i want to separate from my gaming setup. I am tending to start "cloacking" a part of my home network where as Windows users and Wifi guest should not be correlated to the other subnet. Any suggestions / Ideas how or where to start? Example: if my mate plays on his gaming laptop i dont want this to disturbe my linux privacy although we are on the same network.

    Thanks in advance

Help with Android MAC adresses and device names

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:51 AM PDT

Hello, i have a question regarding Android and routers.

I have some devices connected in my home via wifi, with the router

    CG7486E Wireless Gateway,

    https://imgur.com/a/emzPQ04

What happens is what is showed in the image, some devices have their name on the mac address, and some dont (shows tabular view of mac addresses connected)

The five from the bottom are all Android devices, but only 2 have their name on display.

How can i change that? I want to display all the names, or hide them all, and i was wondering why does this happen and how to change it.

    Thank you

how to get an IP address

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:21 PM PDT

My HOA is looking into getting a gigE connection into our small highrise. I don't mind sharing a gig connection with my 24 neighbors, but sharing the finite collection of port assignments gets my hackels up. We've got 2 bids in already, one for a /30 and one for a /29 solution for the building, I'm pushing to get bids for a /27 and enough addresses for each unit but I'm fighting an up hill battle - no one cares to have a public address.

If the building goes with the /29 big I can probably get one of the extra addresses assigned to me, I just know that at some point someone else will want one...and there's only a few , so I'd like keep that from becoming an issue, if possible.

where do I go to (rent?) a singular address???

Wired Router to Router Slow Speeds? Is it lack of gbit ports?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:20 PM PDT

I recently purchased an R6120 router that is hooked up to an Archer C7 router. Speeds are slow and I'm a dummy for attempting this. Apparently I should have looked into it more but I'm also not a home networking wizard.

So here's my question. Am I right in thinking that the speed difference is caused by the R6120 not having any Gbit ports? Which can be remedied by purchasing an additional router that supports Gbit ports or just the same router.

I currently have these two wired together; so I'm just looking for a little additional clarity. I currently use CAT7 cables across the entire network.

Help with coax to moca to new router (fios)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Hey. I've been having a week of plugging and unplugging, looking for ip address, getting the right wire and buying the hardware. But stubborn as I am I give up and I'm hoping I can get advice.

I have Fios Verizon. It comes out of the wall with a coax output. I bought a moca adapter ( Motorola MoCA Adapter Bonded 2.0 MoCA for Ethernet over Coax) and connected it, from there I got a Ethernet cable and connected to my own bought router (Nighthawk AC23 smart WIFI Router). I go to the app it finds it. I connect it to my phone. My phone finds it and it start checking for internet connection but nothing. I go to advanced setup and tells me for IP address, submask, gateway, and dns server, I put it all in and still nothing. Won't connect. Am I doing something wrong here. This has been on annoy week and nothing has work

Thank if the answer is found
